Enough time has passed to have the accounting dept. mail the check that is supposedly on someone's desk since Oct. 21, 2022. Arise/Westlake kept our $8,000 hostage for 19 months!…read more Billing, billing, billing. Notice that almost all the bad reviews about Arise are about billing. When you go to Arise or Westlake Hospital, please never pay anything up front! They will tell you that they will bill insurance and if you overpaid, you will get a refund. But, that seems to never be true, based on reading the reviews here and based on our experience. (Arise handles billing and insurance for Westlake Hospital, we found out a year after a surgical procedure at Westlake). If insurance ever gets billed, and if you ever get a refund, it will only be after many calls and much work and nagging on your part. And, since you won't receive a bill from Arise/Westlake (because you pre-paid and nothing is owed), you will be in the dark about what the charges are, and you won't even know if insurance was billed or not because you don't know what the charges are! Did we get a refund? Yes, after 19 months of calls, emails, frustration, and visiting the Arise billing office in person, we finally got our overpayment of $8,000+ refunded to us. What went wrong? 1) Arise never even billed our insurance for the wrist surgery. They were not motivated to bill insurance because we had already paid them for the procedure. We finally got them to bill the insurance after a year of calling, and finally visiting the Arise office in person. We were extremely lucky that the insurance paid the bill even though it was filed slightly more than 12 months after the procedure. 2) Arise had to "approve" the billing of insurance for the procedure! What? Why? I don't know. Thankfully, they "approved" it, but I've never even heard of such. Billing insurance for a procedure should be automatic, right?? 3) When I called Westlake about billing the insurance, the person I talked to couldn't actually send a bill to insurance, and couldn't tell us if the bill had been sent. Why? Because she worked for Westlake. And, Arise handles the billing. This problem seemed completely insurmountable. We didn't know that Arise handled the billing. We didn't understand the problem. Finally, we drove to Westlake to talk to someone in person about billing, and we were told that we had to drive over to Arise instead. After talking to folks at Arise, we finally understood why it was useless to call the billing department at Westlake. 4) After Arise finally billed insurance, and our insurance fully paid for the procedure, we were then told "Your money is not refundable". Nobody ever wants to hear that. The person was wrong and they never should have said something like that. It would have been insurance fraud to not refund our money after they received payment for the same procedure twice (once from us; once from insurance). 5) After Westlake/Arise agreed to refund our money, it took almost 60 days to receive a refund check in the mail. This is in violation of the law in Texas which requires the patient be refunded their money within 30 days of recognizing that the patient is due a refund. 6) Fundamentally, there is a BIG BIG problem here. The billing of the insurance should happen automatically, and should not have required any phone calls or in-person visits. And, refunding a customer over-payment should occur automatically. Nothing ever happened without our interference. It is as though I was their unpaid employee working for countless hours on my own behalf. Without my intervention and numerous hours spent they would have done nothing at all. I can't possibly write about all the aggravation, frustration, and time spent on this problem. If we had taken no action, we would never see our $8,000 refunded for sure.

We had an excellent experience with Ralph Hadley in August of 2025. The care, concern and rapid…read moreresponse he showed when we brought our son in last summer made a huge difference in getting a (relatively) quick diagnosis. Our son came into the office last August with a limp (that I was assuming was scoliosis.) Ralph & his assistant/ nurse took everything very seriously from the get-go and managed to pull some strings to get him scheduled at 5 pm that same evening for an MRI to rule out tumors on the spine or brain. It was frightening to have everything scheduled so quickly, but we appreciated how seriously they took what was going on. I'll fast forward through the next three months of visits to various specialists; our son was poked, prodded, needled, shocked, etc. By early November, after a genetic test, we had a diagnosis of FHL-1, a neuropathy in the muscular dystrophy family. It's not an ideal diagnosis for a young man of 21... he will most likely lose his mobility over time. But, knowing what we're dealing with is helpful and allowed us to gather a care team for him; and looking at related myopathies, we know it could be worse. I myself have shown signs of FHL-1 for the last 15 years, as weakness in my left arm. But instead of the quick diagnosis that our son received, I was told in 2015 that I had ALS. Thank God that specialist was wrong! Yet even in the intervening years, I still had no clue what was going on. At no point did anyone consider a genetic test... until our son's test came back positive. Suddenly my symptoms made perfect sense. All of this to say... the seriousness with which Ralph Hadley and his team took our son's issue is much appreciated. You set us on a path to figure out exactly what was causing his limp- in 3 months instead of 15 years. We are grateful for the professional expertise and compassion shown us in the office. Would highly recommend Ralph Hadley & his team.

But I work with kids and they like to cough and sneeze in my face- so occasionally I feel like I'm going to lose a lung and I find myself at the minute clinic. Here's why they're my go to urgent care. 1. Location, it's right down the road from me and I can get to them quickly, 2. Easy to book. You can do it on the cvs app, fill out all the info including your insurance and it's all taken care of before you get there. You can also check in from your phone so you can just walk up when you're expected. 3. The space for the clinic is clean and has plenty of seating that is spaced out. You don't have to be on top of other sick patients. 4. The nurses and doctors here are all friendly. And patient. So patient. This last round of illness made my gag reflex very reactive so my strep test was dramatic. The nurse was super kind and didn't laugh- she should have. I did. 5. Your script can be sent to the pharmacy located 10 feet outside the clinics door. Honestly, the biggest wait was the pharmacy getting my meds ready- and that's a different review!

This is all the more astounding because nutrition was her undergraduate degree. She also doesn't appear to practice evidence-based medicine. After her asking me what I eat in a typical day, she asked, "Where do you get your protein?" (Ugh. The idea that protein is hard to come by is flatly wrong and severely outdated. As Dr. Nestle, chair of the NY University nutrition dept. said, *26* years ago "We never talk about protein anymore, because it's absolutely not an issue, even among children. If anything, we talk about the dangers of high-protein diets. Getting enough is simply a matter of getting enough calories." The DV/RDA is ~8% of calories from protein, while grains are ~13% protein, vegetables 23%, etc.) She then tried to tell me that I had to combine plants foods to get a complete protein. (That was an urban legend promoted by a popular 1971 book, whose author recanted ten years later. The USDA nutrient database shows that individual vegetables, grains, and beans have all essential amino acids, in higher amounts than what we need.) Finally, she said I should eat more fat. I asked if there were science to support the idea that an addition of fat to an otherwise healthy diet improves health outcomes. Her reply was like, "I've been a doctor for 20 years...." Meaning, no science. By the way, she asked why I chose her, and I said that one of her patients wrote in a review about how he was able to get off all his meds for Crohn's Disease. Dr. Ikbal replied that the patient took himself off the meds, it wasn't her doing. Anyway, after hearing so much misinformation in just a brief, limited interaction, I have to wonder what other misinformation Dr. Ikbal is operating on. If you want a physician who practices evidence-based medicine, you'll probably want to look elsewhere. UPDATE: After I left the above review, suddenly DOZENS of glowing 5-star reviews appeared within a few days, about 1/3 of which are from people not even in the Austin area, many not even in the same state, and many of whom have zero other reviews on Yelp. Yelp has understandably moved most of these to the "Reviews Not Recommended" section. Is Dr. Ikbal buying fake reviews? Draw your own conclusions.
