Amazing assortment of high end amps and guitars. But, a very cold and unwelcoming environment. Every guitar has a tag saying "Do not touch without assistance". Multiple signs on the wall insisting that customers wash their hands before touching anything. There are a few instruments that I would have liked to check out. But I don't feel welcome to even strum them without my credit card out. No one spoke to me during my visit. I was the only customer. I did overhear another customer being told as I left that they would charge $50 plus the price of a set of string to re-string her nylon string guitar. What a bargain! They must like some folks. But, clearly I didn't make the cut. read more

Beautiful guitars. Terrible salesperson's. I am professional guitarist with 35 years of experience. I am a touring Broadway musician. Austin Guitar House needs a new front of house person or people. I asked politely to try out a SUHR guitar and the sale's person asked "Are you serious about purchasing the guitar?" I could not believe I was asked this question. I am always shopping for instruments but I won't buy one if I am restricted from trying them out. I was honest and said I had no plans to purchase. He then told me I was not allowed to touch the guitar. If I had been allowed to try the guitar perhaps I would have fallen in love with the instrument and purchased it. But we will never know. If we are not allowed to try out the guitars that peek our interest why have them on display? I was not allowed to play the guitars of my choice. The gentleman that assisted me treated me as if I was 14 years old and assumed incorrectly at just about every turn. Great guitars, poor sales representation. I highly recommend NOT stopping by. I give them 2 years before they close permanently and good riddance. Hopefully my next trip to Austin will be met with friendlier hosts. read more

Worst guitar store experience I've ever had. Arrogant, even antagonistic. Wouldn't pull down a guitar to try 'unless I was ready to buy today.' Are you kidding me? Was I profiled? Went in the store actually looking to buy a Shur, I asked the bald sales guy if I could pull something off the wall, He didn't even look up from his Instagram feed when he told me "well, we only pull guitars down if you're actually looking to buy something, and we ask that you wash your hands. I've been playing guitar for a long long time professionally and have a moderate but high quality vintage collection. I have been going into guitar shops for decades now, and it usually takes an instant for whoever's working there to see that I'm proficient and experienced, know how to handle an instrument with care, and a possible customer. Not with these clowns! After spending about 20 minutes looking at all of the instruments they had in stock and observing the 'please ask first' tags on each guitar I asked if I could check out one of the acoustic guitars displayed. The clerk asked me if I was planning on buying any of them today, to which I said " I don't know, cant tell till I've played them." ....to which this jerkoff said "well we try to keep the mileage low on our guitars so unless you're planning to buy one today we'd rather you didn't play it. " I asked about a few others I was interested in, same answer. Fortunately there are several other nicer places to shop for guitars in Austin. Never had worse customer service in my entire life. I came in looking for electro acoustic guitars and was received by a an extremely apathetic young man who had absolutely ZERO interest in making a sale. I wanted to try one of the ONLY two electro acoustic guitars they had and they stopped me after approximately 3 minutes of playing saying they don't want people playing the guitars because they lose value... they never asked what my budget was or even who I was and why i wanted a guitar. It is IMPOSSIBLE to sell a guitar if the buyer can't try it out. Other men were in the building. One of them was supposed to be the boss of the young kid. Nobody provided any level of proper attention. It felt like they wanted me out of the place without even trying to get a sale and THEY DIDNT EVEN ASK WHAT MY BUDGET WAS OR WHO I WAS. Austin Guitar House is my favorite guitar shop in Austin. Actually, it may be my favorite anywhere. And, I'm surprised it took me so long to write up a review. I started going to AGH because I got tired of GC. At first I was intimidated by prices and boutique gear. I would walk in and right out. But, the guitars were cool and interesting. I finally got the nerve to play one of the ones that really caught my eye, and not once did they pressure me into a sale. They just let me alone to play, checked in to see if I wanted to try different amps, or answer questions. It was very chill. Not at all what I expected. One of my favorite things about going to AGH is the staff; they know their customers. When I walk in Oz and Diego greet me by name, and, if they have something new that matches my tastes, they'll ask if they can show it to me. Oz and Diego know just about everything about everything they sell. If they don't, they don't hesitate to break out the manuals, sit down with you and play around. When you go in to a Guitar Center or Sam Ash, Strait Music, or most other shops, finding someone on the floor to help you is rare. And finding anyone that knows anything about the stuff they sell is rarer. In the past year or so, Diego and Oz helped me transition from digital rack gear to an assortment of analog and digital pedal replacements. We just talked about music and what I'm trying to do, and they pulled the right stuff for me to try. Yes, AGH specializes in high-end, boutique, guitars and amps. They've got lots of cool, pricey gear. Not everything is priced out of reach, but there is lot that I can't afford. They'll let you play anything, just ask. And when you bring in your mid-range Les Paul or Strat, or Ibanez for repair or setup, they don't make fun or discriminate. They actually dig some of that. Like the guys at Guitar Resurrection once told me, it makes no sense to compete with the giants and stock gear that GC and Sam Ash carry. If it works for them, great. read more

Brought my Sewell amp to Austin Guitar House to be sold on consignment, I agreed on the outrageous fee of 25% commission only because of the way they said it would be marketed, it was a joke, it never got posted on their website, or any platform...I made several calls asking why it wasn't posted all I got was lies and fake promises...then on my final call they said the amp had issues like a dirty pod or something of the sort...all I know is that I brought the amp in, in perfect working order and as per their testing of the amp the day I brought it in then 2 months later while in their store the amp all of a sudden developed issues....I couldn't get my amp out of that store fast enough..A total disrespect for my property..Ill never ever do business with that establishment ever and I will make it known.. read more

I made my second visit to Austin Guitar house today. Let me explains why only 2 stars. They get 5 stars for selection! Great stuff would be happy to own just about anything they sell, but 0 for customer service. I went in today money in had looking at a beautiful selection of National Guitars and ready to seal the deal in an near empty shop, but I wasn't approached. Guy sitting at the counter. No "hello" or "how are you""can I help you" nothing. I walked around patiently waiting cause maybe their busy. Made eye contact a few times, but nothing. I'm an old fashioned guy and rule one to selling a $2000+ item is say hello. Easy as that. I always buy local and they made it too easy to go elsewhere. read more

This is my favorite guitar shop in Austin (or anywhere I've been). They are the most helpful, most knowledgeable and friendliest guitar shop I've been to. If you want someone to help you find exactly what you need to be the best you can be with your own style, I suggest giving them a go. They don't pressure you to buy anything either. They will help you out whether you buy something or not. They are good at listening, and they don't come across as arrogant (you know that type lol). I really can't go on enough about how awesome this store is. I bought a Fano from these guys, and a fuzz pedal. Prices are in the elevated range, but right where they should be on the products they sell. This is not a store for cheap gear. read more

If you play guitar and are a serious gear hound then you should really check out this place. While I am not thrilled at the location of the shop now, I can attest that AGH carries the absolute top of the line gear. This is not a Guitar Center. Not going to find LTD, Ibanez, etc in here. Oz and his staff have always treated me very well regardless if I was browsing, picking up a $8 set of strings or a $2000 piece of gear. IMHO this is what a great guitar shop should be modeled after. AGH has consistently been the best guitar shop experience I could ask for. Especially when I'm looking for something specific. They give rock star treatment to mere rock mortal such as myself, and they're not pushy about sales. Like the other reviews have said, this is a boutique guitar/pedal/amp shop so don't expect to find Fenders or Gibsons or very much at all that you can find at MegaloGuitar. My latest visit was as follows. I walked in, they asked me what I was looking for, my style of playing, how much I wanted to spend, and they grabbed five pedals out of the cases that would be near my tastes. They plugged them all up together so I could really compare and be confident that I got what I was looking for. I tried about more than a few pedals, none of which I had any previous experience with and got to hear them with nice amps and guitars as opposed to the laughable "pedal station" at Guitarbucks. It was also kinda nice not having heard any of the hype around the pedals. After I picked one, I researched it and found out why it was so great after the fact. The difference between this place and any other music shop I've been to is similar to that between fine dining and sitting at the bar. Most shops you stand around the display waiting for someone to notice, then you can usually only (with pedals) try one at a time, forgetting what each one sounded like while you're waiting for someone to noticed you at the display again. But at AGH, it's almost like you're being waited on. They're ready for you when you walk in, and they pride themselves in what they're selling. Decent selection but you definitely pay the price. Went to look for a new hollow body today and was told only "customers who can buy" are allowed to play the guitars and that they "try and keep the mileage off them" when I asked to play a Heritage hollow body which wasn't even that expensive. They definitely assumed because I was 22 I couldn't purchase a 4K guitar. Maybe next time I'll come with printed pictures of my vintage guitar collection to prove I'm "able to buy" a mid range guitar. Great place to go look at guitars as if it's a museum, not so much if you're looking to play a few and pick a new one to take home. Make sure to wear your favorite Gucci shirt and rent a sports car to park outside if you're a young adult and want a fighting shot at playing anything. This is a fantastic guitar shop. Probably my favorite in Austin. The employees are super knowledgeable and obviously care very deeply about the needs and preferences of their customers. They carry only high-end boutique makers, many of which are from Austin themselves. They provide a level of personalized service that is unparalleled among local guitar shops. They do not just leave you to fend for yourself when demoing gear. They will stick with you and listen to your requirements and recommend equipment--drawing from a deep well of love and appreciation for fine guitars amps, and effects. You will walk away impressed with the level of service you receive. That's a lot more than I can say for the big box chain guitar superstore which shall remain nameless that is located mere blocks away from Austin Guitar House! If you are looking for typical stock of low to medium priced Fender, Gibson, Ibanez, this store is definitely not for you. They don't carry any of those lower end production instruments anyway. Hand-made is the rule here. If you are looking for high end boutique electric guitars, amplifiers, effects and accessories, and unbeatable attention to detail combined with fantastic hospitality, this is the store for you. read more

Best high-end guitar shop in Austin. Period. Austin Guitar House (AGH) has a great ambience, excellent (and growing) selection of carefully chosen boutique guitars, pedals and amps and more that you are highly unlikely to find anywhere else in town. But, equally important is Oz, the owner. Just the nicest guy you could possibly expect to encounter. Also happens to be a guitar builder and a player. As a result, he is extremely knowledgeable about the boutique world - and ever willing to patiently share his knowledge and insights without an ounce of pressure to buy anything. I have now bought two killer guitars, an amp and a super cable. I could not be happier with my purchases. But what i really feel is that I've joined into a family of guitar lovers, not just become a customer. And, that is because of the environment Oz has created. As an example, Oz takes the time to introduce his visitors to one another. Everyone there feels special and appreciated, regardless of skill level. All you need to feel at home in Oz's shop is an appreciation for finely-crafted equipment and a willingness to be enveloped by his easy going style. Now, the guitars and amps are not cheap. Considering some of the negative reviews on this site I can say that I was a bit put off going to this store at first, but I decided to give them a chance, since I planned to see them due to some boutique items that they had at the store. Those negative reviews were so wrong that I also had to chime in and offer my experience. The day before I went to the Guitar Center that was close to this store, expecting that since Austin is the "Music Capital" of Texas that I'd get better selection than Houston. Boy, was I wrong...non-existent customer service - I wasn't greeted until I spent maybe over 30 minutes in the store, fishing for my own speaker and guitar cables to plug in, half of the amplifiers were in unusable condition, due to speakers jacks or power cables missing. The selection was non-existent. There was maybe one Orange and one 6505 head and everything else was pretty much digital junk, minus maybe one or two small heads that were OK. So after the Guitar Center experience, I figured rude salesmen were par for the course... Well, upon entry I was greeted by two of the nicest guys you can ever meet. Not only were they courteous, but they also jumped right away at the chance to help me plug into anything at the store. Now, this store, unlike Guitar Center, had plenty of beautiful Mesa amps, including the new John Petrucci signature Mark V. Some of the other amps - Soldano, Carr, Carol-Ann, Fuchs, Metroupoulos, Suhr, etc. The sales guys were perfectly ok to let me try any of these and they even dialed in some of their preferred settings, even suggested guitars to try out with. Some of the guitars they carry are also worthy of notice as they had some amazing US-made models in stock, especially some of the Suhr guitars...all maintained at the proper humidity and setup, again unlike Guitar Center. The employees were actually discussing how to ensure the guitars were at the proper temperature and humidity at the current weather, while checking humidity meters around the store. Try and see that at Guitar Center! The list of pedals was also long, but to be honest, I was short on time so didn't want to start pulling pedals for test as I would've stayed all day. Another thing of note is that the store carries V-Picks, which are usually hard to find and definitely worth trying. This is a store that I will definitely return to and the care to detail inspires. If you want the right boutique amp or guitar, properly maintained and stored at optimal conditions, this is the place. A+ for great service, amazing selection and attention to detail! read more

I ended up getting the VL Effects "Tone Invader" after playing many of the excellent fuzz pedals they have to offer. I am always amazed with the selection of quality gear AGH has available as well as how knowledgable the staff is regarding all of the gear they offer. Oz, Ray and Diego have spent many hours with me over the past few years answering my questions and letting me try out various amps, guitars and pedals to ensure I get exactly what I am looking for. Do not use this music store. I purchased a ciokolate powersupply on their Reverb website for 369.00. When I received it I noticed one of the powerslots were for AC power instead of DC. I reached back out to them and asked if I could return it for this reason. That stated that they do not take returns on there reverb website. But that if I wanted to purchase something of equal or greater value that they would make this exception. So I went to there actual website and I found my same power supply selling for 299.00 I asked what was the deal with that. No response. They take there merchandise and put it on their Reverb web site and mark it way up. And make sure to put no returns polices on them. Crappy way of doing business in America. Went into the shop with a friend to try out Collings acoustics which are sometimes hard to find even though they are not cheap. People were great, they let us try whatever we wanted, even though it's obvious I am not a good player. I had no interest in electrics until I saw what was in stock. The quality and uniqueness of their guitars is very impressive. I know you should not buy on looks and style ... but ... it was tempting. Unfortunately no time to plug in and really try the selection but next visit I will. Can't wait to go back. read more

Oz and all @ Austin Guitar House are very knowledgeable and personable folks. The stock is the best in town (unless you are looking for that Ibanez or Schecter). These people will take the time to actually talk to you, unlike others who are trying to use poorly developed high pressure sales tactics. If you suffer acute G.A.S., this place will require massive bank transfusions. Thank goodness they don't take AMX! I would be divorced if they did. I have only been to AGH once, but this is one of my 2 favorite stores in the world PRO'S : 1. Wonderful place to sit and strum. One of the most important questions of any guitar store - "Can I really get comfortable with the instrument I am looking at"? Sit on the couch at Austin Guitar House, and enjoy your test drive! You may not want to leave. 2. Great selection of guitars, as well as amps and effects. There are many hard-to-find boutique brands under one roof here. I have never walked into a store that had so many things that held my interest. 3. Owner Oz Hofstader is a great guy. Talk to Oz and you will quickly see that he loves guitars, guitar music, guitar makers, and other guitar players. He really KNOWS this stuff, and will give good advice with absolutely zero sales pressure. Most stores - even if ethical and friendly - exist for the purpose of moving merchandise. There is a wonderful selection of higher-end guitars and amps in the store, most of which would be difficult or impossible to find elsewhere in Austin.
