Such an incredible experience. Let's be honest, plenty of us musicians go into music stores just to play instruments. Which is not ideal for owners anywhere, however up North they are very rude and short about it. But the people here were incredibly nice, and encouraged you to try out as many guitars/basses as possible. They understand not everyone is willing to drop $7,000 on a Les Paul Custom from the 70's, and they have a mind-blowing collection. I live a couple hours from Austin and called ahead before bringing my Dr. Z in for repairs. I spoke to Jesse and we talked through some possible issues that he had seen before with this particular amp. He was very sensitive to my proximity to their store and said he would try and get it fixed that day if possible. Sure enough, he was correct with his "over the phone" diagnosis and he had the work completed that day. Never expected that quick of a turnaround and the level of service I received. About 15 years ago it became vogue to start collecting old guitars. As a result, the supply dried up as dealers and resellers scarfed up the good stuff and the prices reached the stratosphere. The pleasure of perusing guitars in an intimate shop are vanishing. Its hard to find a place where the moment you walk in the front door the smell of aging instrument hits you. If you play guitar or any instrument, you know what I mean when I say, shopping for an instrument is one of life's joys. Here at Austin vintage Guitars you can still find a musician friendly environment and a nice selection of potential acquisitions. There is a great little dog roaming around to help you relax also! Spotted a 1982 Takamine C-128 Classical acoustic online, at this shop. Went and played it and bought it. Great guitar, plays like new. LOVE it. Not sure about all the negativity on service, I was greeted walking in, looked for the C-128 and didn't see it. Asked for help and got it. Played it and bought it. Asked if I needed anything else, friendly at check out. It's a chill guitar shop for musicians, not a retail Guitar Center. Great selection of guitars and gear. I would think most people coming in here were musicians who, like me, know what they are looking for. Or would prefer to browse without a salesperson over their shoulder. The city of Austin is synonymous with music. And visiting this musical mecca also meant taking in one of it's finest and best known guitar shops. This place is difficult to find as the Fender Telecaster sign outside is only about 20 feet tall, it's a beautiful thing. Only eclipsed by the large selection of Fenders and others inside this cavernous cacophony of musical instruments. Our traveling companions picked up a cool Fender Ukulele but I was pushing hard for a new Tele-lost that battle. Wide range of new and used guitars, both electric and acoustic, drum kits, and all kinds of pedals to dial in your tone. Guitar shops can be like Bike Shops, lots of egos. Not here (and not surprising in Austin-everyone is so nice!). I wish I lived closer, I would be here weekly. Great shop! read more

Visiting from out of town. Idk what all the bad reviews are other than people who probably were rude themselves or expected a crazy deal on something they wanted to sell or buy. They guys in the store let me play a ton of guitars including pricy vintage stuff. Was able to play through old vintage amp as well and crank it to my hearts delight. The staff was polite and courteous to me. Great selection of used Gibson and fenders as well as some custom shop and non custom shop guitars. Also had some lower end Squires. Great selection or new and used fender amps, as well as some supro, Marshall, etc. didn't play any pedals but they also have a nice selection of those as well. Wasn't looking for acoustics or semi hollow bodies but looked like an interesting selection. Overall I thought this was a great place for an out of town guitar excursion and would go back. read more

I will never visit this shop again. Hands down, the rudest staff (I was assisted by the owner) I have ever experienced, and that includes used car dealerships. He insulted me, calling out the car I drove all because I was trying to negotiate a lower price on a guitar that was thousands of dollars. I bought a guitar from them last year for nearly $5k and was ready to spend a couple thousand but they chose to be rude, even insulting my 12 year old daughter's shoes. I have a 1964 Fender Deluxe Reverb that I bought for $300 cash in 1987 from a kid in Maryland who modded it and added a master volume in the back. I thought I had it wired back to original specs by an old German guy in Maryland in 1988 and have had it checked and maintained by a reputable amp guy in San Diego for the last 20+ years. I was proud to own an original serial number 1964 Deluxe Reverb and always thought it sounded great. I moved to Texas and the amp started making some noise. I took it to Austin Vintage because I knew they were the real deal and would know what the amp was. I dropped it off and when they said "one week", I did not have a lot of confidence. I got a call from Jesse after six days and he immediately told me that he had found that, yes I had a 1964 Deluxe Reverb, but there where a lot of parts that had been changed over the last 30+ years (capacitors, resisters, tubes) and parts that needed to be changed (cables, optical sensors (?)) to make it back to spec as a 1964 Deluxe Reverb. Not only did Jesse give me a list of those parts (and a great verbal description of what they did) and an itemized list of the material cost, but he did it all for only $150 labor, total. The reason Jesse can do that is because Jesse has been doing it for 23 (?) years and knows what the problems are right away and has the experience and technique to fix it. He's not researching it on YouTube, he's picking up a solder iron and making it new again. I've had this 1964 Deluxe Reverb for over 37 years. It has NEVER sounded this good. I really like Austin Vintage, they have a sweet set up in the store and so many great guitars and amps to look at and play. Their pedal case is very impressive as well, they are helpful, but never in your face or pushy, after the initial greeting, they go back to what they are doing, but ready to drop everything to help you at any time. I love that about them, they don't stare you down and watch your every move, they don't say anything when you pull a guitar from the rack or plug into an amp. Great selection of Electrics and Acoustics to play, the amp section is in another room and there's cables there to plug into which ever amp you want to try out. Total snobs who size people up the moment they walk in the door, not realizing that a lot of players these days know as much or more than they do at this point, so they're probably over compensating. Supper cool guitar shop. Nice selection of vintage guitars and they're not snobs about allowing people to try them out. My son was torn between a Danelectro and a Rickenbacker and this place had both to try out. Their prices I would say are competitive. They have some amps that are in the sub $100 range all the way up to the many thousand dollar range. Their bass selection is also pretty cool too. I was able to try out a Gretsch semi hollow body bass which I had never played before. Made me rethink my Ibanez or at least want to add the Gretsch to my arsenal. I will certainly come back when I'm ready to acquire my next vintage guitar! read more

Purchased a 1950s Vintage Fender Amplifier from Austin Vintage Guitars. Very poor way of dealing with a customer on a large ticket item - with the potential for further business. I was honest and professional the entire transaction process. Here are the facts.... Facts: - Paid $8,663.05 (no rounding up here). - Told it works/sounds incredible. - Received amp, did not work. (These are old and shipping can be hard). - Called Stephen. Accepted the option of trying new tubes. - Inserted the tubes as he instructed - several times and methods - did not work. - Stephen said take it to a local tech, and we will cover the repair. - As agreed upon, took it in for service (AND ASKED FOR NOTHING MORE - than for the amp to work). - Offered to return the tubes back to Stephen. He declined. - Repair shop told me "could be loose socket, broken solder, bad tubes'. - Upon pick up - told "Cleaned the sockets and found/replaced bad tube". Total bill = $120 Total bill = $120 (on an $8,663.05 amp) - Not that big of a deal. When it came time for reimbursement. Immediately, Stephen needed to talk to me. I was in no rush for the refund so I called about six days later. Here's where it gets weird.... He called the shop and it was a faulty tube. Okay? I sent you the receipt. It then became about what I was trying to get out of this.... as if I was manipulating the situation... All I wanted was an amp that had sound (without driving around to technicians to service). Keep the $120 - but be respectful of your customer's integrity.....Please. Or at least let me talk without interrupting. Very disrespectful. $50k+ in purchases - vintage amps/guitar retailers - never had an experience such as this. For the sake of $120 - provided a horrific customer experience. I hope that $120 kept in pocket goes a long way vs. repeat business or positive word of mouth to other potential customers. Recommend avoiding Austin Vintage Guitars. read more

I've taken 2 guitar amps to get some work done, Marshall JCM 900 4102 and a Mesa Boogie Nomad 55. I also introduced my father to AVG to get his Bassman 50 watt repaired. We were both happy with the results. Met with professional courtesy and good customer service. Bill does great work. All work was done that same day. We traveled from Laredo Tx and will continue to do so. Just purchased a Fender Super Reverb and will be calling AVG to take it in. read more

I gave this shop about 10 tries. I have walked in 4 times with $2k burning in my pocket, but never leave with anything. A totally new experience for me. There is something strange, a weird negativity about this shop other than the prices, it's a vibe, an atmosphere. I do believe this is because the older employees "size you up" at the door, which people who have worked certain jobs can easily pick up on. Older, lonely retiree types get top notch service (and probably better deals). Something always tells me I'm not going to find the guitars I am looking for, because I have come to look for places with good people, so that I have a good vibe from my guitars, a story, or recommendation at least. This does something for my playing, the guitar kind of becomes my good friend. If I bought a wonderful guitar from this shop, it would just feel dead, partially because it will be overpriced, but also because I bought from a dead shop with tons of inventory they don't seem to be proud of or recommend to customers (unless you can somehow visibly show you have money to spend). read more

I purchased a used Firebird from Austin Vintage Guitars as a gift to my Fiance! Let's be honest... I know nothing about guitars. It is super intimidating to walk into a guitar shop when you have no idea what you are doing!!! I do know that when my Fiance and I visited this shop, he picked up that Firebird and his eyes LIT up. He mentioned that he had always wanted one. Flash forward 6 months later, thankful I had written "gibson firebird" down in my notes as to not forget which guitar he wanted.... I stroll into Austin Vintage Guitars and ask the nice gentleman (I believe it was the owner, named Steven?) if they have any Gibson Firebirds in my price range. Sadly, they didn't. But, I told him I may be willing to spend a little more, if they could work on the price on their end.... he worked with me and we came to a price that we both agreed upon. I was seriously ecstatic and couldn't believe I walked out of there with a guitar that I know would make my Fiance FLIP. I had to hide the guitar at my neighbors house. On the night of our rehearsal dinner I presented him with it. He was so surprised and he wouldn't put it down! Come to find out, this EXACT guitar was the same Firebird he picked up in the store 6 months prior. (we have the photo to prove it!). The next day (our wedding day!) he surprised ME using that same guitar....I didn't notice that my new husband was nowhere to be found at the reception for a few minutes....he left the ballroom and changed into a swanky ivory dinner coat, got up on stage with the band (The Copa Kings), and serenaded me (while playing his brand new Gibson Firebird) to the song "Love Is Here To Stay" by Frank Sinatra. Thats the kind of stuff for you only see in movies!!! I can't thank Austin Vintage Guitars enough for helping to make my Husbands guitar dreams a reality. And for talking to a girl who has no idea what she is doing in a guitar shop, and not laughing at her face when she asked dumb questions, over and over and over again. You guys are awesome and we will most definitely be back in to buy more guitars in the future! read more

Funny how this place gets a bunch of five star reviews punctuated with one-star slams. For heaven's sake, it's a guitar shop with employees who act like... well... guitarists. They may be more passionate about guitars than they are about impeccable customer service, but I wouldn't want it otherwise. I've used AVG primarily for repair services and the work has been solid. I've had a fret crown/level job take twice the time they estimated, but the work was impeccable. I've had them expedite a repair during the busy SXSW weeks and they really pulled through to have my instrument ready in time for a showcase gig. As the Rolling Stones might say, this is a place where you may not be able to get what you want, but sometimes... you just might find... you get what you need... read more

I seldom leave reviews, good, bad, or otherwise since it is very hard to discern truth from tale on the internet. Below is my account of dealing with AVG and the facts surrounding my purchase. My experience with AVG was absolutely one of the best experiences I have had with an out of state, sight unseen purchase. I have an unusually large guitar collection and wanted something cool that I could add to it. I found exactly what I was looking for on AVG website, made the purchase and paid them immediately. Again, all of this sight unseen only based on their online description. Well...I received the guitar three days later (TX to NC), a special Custom Shop model, and it did not meet the description the store put online. It was at minimum, 100 times better! This guitar was more perfect than they described. Good business in my opinion, especially when I received something better than I was expecting. First rule of business - under promise, over deliver, and over deliver AVG did! I was so happy, I reached out to Steve at AVG and spoke to him on the phone, explaining how unbelievable my experience was. What a great guy. So much so, I gave him a list of high dollar 'holy grail' guitars I am looking for in the event he bumps into one of them one day. In this day of people trying to find someone doing something wrong, it is important we let people know when someone is caught doing something right! Steve and his team did right by me! The selection here is amazing. If you're looking for a higher end guitar, theres really nowhere better. The staff is also super helpful. I went in there last week and gave Nick a long, meandering description of what I was looking for in an acoustic guitar. I've been passively looking for a few years, mind you. Every time I've been in this store, not once have I been greeted or even approached. You'd think with how much money the average piece of gear in this store costs you'd get a little "what's up, what are you looking for?" Or at least some kind of acknowledgment. And when you approach the staff it seems like you're bothering them, or they assume you can't afford something so they're wasting their time talking to you. Just flipping through Austin Vintage Guitars website and seeing the range and selection and prices versus comparable gear online should show you the depth of inventory and reasonable pricing at AVG. I just ordered and received a really wonderful fender deluxe reverb from AVG - needed a little tweaking, which they did extremely quickly. The very great Kevin handled the transaction wonderfully, but everyone involved - sales, staff, everyone on the phone - was really nice and helpful. Really tried to like this place as its close to my house. Everyone who works here is arrogant and unhelpful. Asked about a certain pedal that I would have gladly shelled out upwards of 200 for and rather than help me the clerk just ask "what I would ever need it for" and trailed of playing some paisley-clad dad-rock on a "vintage" acoustic. Good luck getting to play SXSW in ten years in your throwback vest, bros! And good luck trying to sell midrange Marshall heads for $1300. Never coming here again read more

I come in the door, I'm only looked at and not greeted. Weird but whatever. I look around for a few minutes and nobody asks me if I need anything or if I'd like to play something. I go to get the strings I was in search of, I buy them. The guy doesn't even tell me when the transaction is done and just sort of goes back to whatever he was doing before. I tell them thank you, for some reason, and he doesn't even give a "your welcome" or a "have a good day", just a vague nod with his head down. Weird vibe and weird people at this store. I don't recommend it to anyone because it I don't even know what kind of person they would treat with kindness or hospitality. There are PLENTY of other guitar stores in town to spend your money at, for much less too! And they'll be sure to treat you like a customer and not a bother. I recommend a place like South Austin Music over this store any day. read more

I love Austin Vintage Guitars. The owner, Steve, is an incredibly nice guy, staff is laid back, and this shop has a selection that puts to shame even the best of shops. Wall to wall of every guitar you can think of. The Fender and Gibson greats, plus Gretsch, Rickenbacker, and even a few Doozeys. The amp selection is off the chain. High end, mostly hardwired amplifiers here. Vintage tones and quality builds. I love that this shop doesn't carry the same old cheap, terrible amps that you see in every shop. It's also nice to walk into a shop where the metal heads don't frequent. If anyone is in there noodling, they are 9 out of 10 great players. This is a laid back shop, with amazing prices. People who complain about the prices make me wonder what they walked in there expecting. If you expect low end guitar center solid state amps and low end guitars, then you're in the wrong store. The guitars and amps here are VERY high end. It's not supposed to be cheap. I play for a living, these prices rule for a retail store and the quality of equipment kept in stock here. Of course Reverb and eBay can be cheaper, it's a completely different business model to a retail store. The staff is amazing. I can shop in peace, or I can get their attention and ask them a question. If you're a high maintenance shopper, this is not the place for you. If you like the prices of low end gear, this is not the place for you. But if you're a professional musician, audiophile, gear nerd, and lover of all things cool, this is the shop for you. read more
