This was such a fun experience walking through the park and seeing all the holiday lights and displays! We even got to enjoy the cocktail samples at Dottie May's - my favorite was the Holiday Hot Cocoa! I wish there was a way to circle back (from the end of the trail to the food trucks at the beginning) after seeing all the lights/displays. We didn't want to walk the trail with food so we waited until the end then realized we had to walk the entire way back in reverse because there was no pathway across. We had so much fun at the trail of lights. It was such a pleasant experience in the midst of the holiday season. It's family friendly with hot coco and cookies, as well of some adult beverages for the adults. Food trucks are available to grab snacks and food from which is a huge plus. There's such a variety of things to see and things to interact with. I loved the music and photo opps, as well as the fact it was wildly spacious. Parking is tricky and can be superrrr expensive. We parked far away and walked which I don't mind, but I definitely considered folks who may not have the ability to do so. The Trail of Lights celebrates the unique spirit and people that make Austin special. It features an amazing more than 2 million lights illuminating the park, 90 lighted holiday trees, and more than 70 other holiday displays. The dazzling lights make a beautiful backdrop against the city skyline. Featured are beautiful holiday scenes, including Candy Cane Lane and displays with beloved characters such Cinderella, Snow White and the 7 Dwarves, SpongeBob Square Pants, Humpty Dumpty, Dr. Seuss, Winnie the Pooh to name a few.. We visited the Austin Trail of Lights on a free admission night and overall had a really nice experience. We chose to park at a nearby church that was offering parking for $20. There were quite a few lane closures, so getting parked took some time. All lanes merged so people didn't have a choice but to cut you in line. After parking we walked about 15 minutes to the trail. From what we could tell, the main parking line at the park itself looked even longer, so this felt like a solid option. Once inside, it was definitely crowded, but that's to be expected (especially on a free night). The lights were beautiful and well done, and there were plenty of food and drink options throughout. We got the refillable hot cocoa for $10, which was a great choice since there were multiple refill stations along the trail. Restrooms were the hard porta potties, which is typical for an outdoor event. Overall, it was festive, fun, and worth experiencing, especially if you're okay with crowds and plan ahead for parking. read more

The trail of lights takes over Zilker park each year to bring all the Christmas twinkle and amazement. It can be super busy and parking isn't fun so I recommend ride share. There are displays that repeat year after year but there is always something new depending on the sponsor. There are plenty of food truck options as well as smores stations set up and hot chocolate and alcohol for sale too! It's popular which means there could be long lines to get in especially if you purchase general admission. We moved to Austin in 94 and there have been significant changes. I paid for zip and holiday passes for the first time this year. Previously would go on free nights or general admission or just didn't even go. The wait times have gotten longer and if you go with kids, it could be a challenge. We spent ~300 and went on a Saturday night during early entry. It's worth it if you have never been but I probably won't do this every year. There additional costs once you get in rides like Ferris wheel and carousel. But it is still very enjoyable for the fam. There are still moments that feel the same as before like some of the displays. We had fun but it has gotten expensive. read more

I'm really torn about this one. I believe it's fully possible to have a marvelously fun, magical time, but it'll cost you. Even for the "zip" pass, your upgrades include access to essentially a play pen with hot cocoa made from a powdered mix and dry ass grocery store shortbread cookies. Oh, but wait, there are more port-a-potties with equally long lines as those for the lowly general admission, and tables that are all completely full, too! You need to pay more for each and every activity. Photos with santa? Ferris wheel ride? It costs you both time and money; lines will be the bulk of your experience if you opt in. The lights are lovely and it's a wonderful nighttime walk, especially when the weather is good. Perfect for family time and of course, that means you need to watch your step, because there are small children barreling blindly through the night. Am I glad I went? Yeah, I enjoyed myself overall! Sad to read quite a few negative reviews about the Trail of Lights. I grew up in Austin, and I remember going to the Trail of Lights as early as 2008 as a kid. Yes, Austin has changed over the years. I don't go to the Trail of Lights every year, but it is one of those fun activities that I always looked forward to during the Christmas season. It's lovely to see the big tree lit up in the distance as you drive along Mopac. It's even more fun to spin underneath it with your friends and family. Most of the people complaining seem to be mentioning the parking situation. Parking is really not that bad if you know not to park directly at Zilker. Park under Mopac or near Austin High School and walk. It's free and it takes only 10-15 min to get to the entrance. Or buy a shuttle pass which doesn't cost extra. IYKYK. I would agree that depending on the night, it can be overcrowded. If you don't like big crowds, then it might not be for you. They have plenty of options in food trucks in different sections of the trail. The food and hot cocoa is definitely overpriced, but you are not obligated to eat or drink there. The light displays have mostly been the same over the last several decades, but I really don't get tired of seeing them. They have added several more activities along the trail including a free children's book stand, a leather keychain crafting station, and more. If you're a local, Trail of Lights is worth checking out at least once for the holidays. read more

Trail of Lights was very fun as always. The lights are consistently beautiful, and the entire area was very clean and well lit, which made walking through it really enjoyable. The food trucks were great, and it's always nice having JABs there. The Zip Pass was convenient, but I do wish it came with more features or at least more goodies in the lounge. I loved that it shows how many steps you've walked--that was a fun touch. Huge shoutout to the cleaning crew too, they were absolutely on point. Overall, a great experience! read more

We got the zip passes to arrive an hour early and it's still like a 40 min wait to get in! We went the year before, parking nearish Austin high for free and walking... Better experience that way. The lights themselves are beautiful and the displays are entertaining/pretty. I think it's still a fun experience and would think bringing kids would be fun, too. Overall though, there are plenty if nearby towns that do trail of lights type things that, while not as extravagant, get the job done without all the headache. I think it's cute. The GA line opened at 7PM and we got to the line at 5 till and walked into the park at 7:30pm. I honestly would pay for the upgrade per person if you can afford i if you want to be shuttled in and not wait in line and get in early. The decorations were not impressive to me but the trees were pretty and if you eat a heart dinner before, it's a nice way to walk off some calories. I'm curious what people who bought VIP thought because the lounge is literally at the exit and I was trying to see what they got that would make it worth it and I'm still not sure. I will say if we had more time we would have spent more money doing some of the food stuff but the lines bro. Two things I can't do at my age: find parking and wait in lines. I didn't buy parking with the tickets so if you didn't than you can't buy day of which means I parked at Whole Foods market and paid uber to drop us off and that worked out. It was cold, you are walking in the dirt, so dress appropriately and wear sneakers. We did buy a crepe there and it was mediocre but if you are going with friends and/or family, there are plenty of jokes to crack and things to see and steps to take and food to eat. I won't go back but now Incan say I went. My family made this a fun time, we laughed a lot. This seems very on par for Austin type of things to do. The little kids seem to love it. read more

Went during free general admission and it was great! It was my first time and I was impressed with all the lights on display. I'm also a huge fan of art so everything fascinated me and I took a lot of pics and vids. Parking can be difficult but we were lucky and found parking across from Umlauf. If you go around nighttime 8:30 PM, some people are leaving then and you can take their parking spots. We just needed to walk a little to get to the entrance of Trail of Lights. Tip: if you are going somewhere darker and darker, that's not the right direction. They say the lights shut off at 10:10 but we were there until 10:30 and the lights were still going. Hey it's Christmas time and who wants to read negative comments... I will try to keep this constructive... Great idea of community holiday celebrations.. parking is a challenge and requires between a 1 mile and 2 mile walk depending on where you buy your parking pass. You need to pre purchase a parking pass.. trust me on this one. The lines to get in are poorly managed and kinda ruin the tone before you actually get inside.. this is down to the folks running the lines changing which line is for no bags at all and then opening up new lines with no lanes or ropes to keep people from switching lines (cutting) . Once inside you are caught up in a wave of People walking through the displays most of which are advertising for local shops or products. The kids liked it so I guess that's all that counts... read more

Terrible place if you planning to drive there!!! Hours in a line to get access to parking and then find out that there is no lots!!! If you'll be lucky - you will park your car somehow and then you'll be necessary to go through the dirt and paddles on a parking to reach attraction. There is NO direction SIGNS AT ALL!!! You have no idea where to go, and how far is the entrance (and where the entrance itself)... you just keep following the other people with the hope, they going same way as you... And then, when you finnaly getting inside.. You just see an overcrowded place, with super old cardboard christmas decorated, and a huge amount of lines for everything like WC, food, entertainment, shows.... Been coming here for over a decade now and it's still fun to experience every single time. We usually go as a group to save on gas/parking, and it's worth it to see the lights and enjoy the festivities with those you love. I do have some bits of advice to keep in mind for those who haven't been here before or are from another city: 1. Come early but don't get the Fast Pass. It only lets you in earlier (6 PM) than everyone else (7 PM). It's not necessary in my opinion. 2. Parking is insane but you really don't have to park at Zilker to get a spot. Wife and I usually find spots nearby via street parking and then walk from there. Depending on where you park, you may be walking for a bit, but it's better than paying tons of money at Zilker. 3. If you look online, you can see that about half of the month is full of days that have free admission. Come during those days and you can save a bunch of money. 4. You don't have to stop at the opening for food. There's many spots along the trail, and even some located within the giant Christmas tree at the end. Also, there are tons of areas that are for hot chocolate in case you were wondering. 5. You will have to walk. 6. The trail of lights is usually over around the 10 PM time range. If you think you'll arrive around or after 9:30 PM, then do another day. The Trail can take about an hour to experience so keep this in mind. read more

I've been coming to the Austin Trail of Lights darn near my entire life (I'm almost 30 years old). My dance group used to dance there at the end of one of the trails, and it was so much fun! What I can say that has changed a LOT in the last 20 years (since I just went this last year) is it is WAYYYYYYY more crowded that it ever used to be. I was seriously shocked -- it was almost shoulder to shoulder! Back in my dance days 10-15 years ago, it was busy, but not like this. Nevertheless, they do a pretty good job keeping things organized to get people in and make sure the experience is nice and safe (including during COVID, when they did it as a car drive-through experience given social distancing). They do have food, but it consists of a handful of food trucks at the end of the trail, and they often have lines so plan for that. Last year they had some little picnic tables where you could sit too, and I remember we got hot chocolate so that was fun/festive. They also always put up a giant "light Christmas tree" (basically long strings of lights that connect to the central flood light post, which is very tall -- you can see it from downtown). Overall, the Austin TOL is iconic; it's gotten more expensive and more crowded over the years which is why I stopped going for a while but I went last year for nostalgia and still had quite a good time despite the hustle/bustle and cost (which I think was like $10 per person?). I would go again this year if someone wanted me to go with them, but otherwise I don't see it out since it's quite "been there, done that" to me. Hope it's around for a long time though, it keeps Austin festive! read more

I am incredibly shocked at the low reviews for this event! I knocked a star off because many a stall had run out of hot cocoa, but that's all I could complain about. I've seen and heard lots of folks talk about enjoying the fun run, but I just did a regular walk through. My group and I went on the final free night of this experience and it was PACKED. Still the line to get in was incredibly fast. And there was still plenty of room to maneuver and get in to the see the sights. I might try a paid night next year to see if that is less crowded. Some folks in my group said they do this every year. After my first experience, I get it. It is gorgeous, y'all. There's more than just lights here! A lot of the visuals are actually focused on various sculptures. These had a wide range of themes from Spongebob and Sandy to a large Jackalope. There's big gingerbread arch, and that had to be my favorite. It was beautiful, impressive, and whimsical. As for food I got a vegetarian corndog and loved it. Delicious. I'm told the regular ones are good as well. There were also crepe vendors if that's more your speed. I'll definitely be coming back to the Trail of Lights next year. Hope to see y'all! read more

When it comes to parking, if you didn't pay, it can be but tough depending on the time you go. Hint go at a later time. The trail of lights has many outdated setups, you can tell the old vs the new ones. I feel like if you like walk back in time in Austin. The trail of lights is your goto. I'd say it's more of a "nostalgic " vibe. I can appreciate the mile and half walk. But sometimes with everyone stopping to take pictures. It can be a bit much. The reason I gave it so many stars, is because I just simply enjoy Christmas lights and walking in the park. And being an Austinite, it's great to see things I've seen since growing up. No signs leading to the entrance of this. Such a hassle to find. Unbelievably underwhelming experience. We were only able to find the darn place when we stopped by random traffic workers to ask for directions (which were completely different from those on the ticket- we took Rollingway-Riley-Stratford). Ultimately took us 30 minutes to go the right way (luckily we left early; 8:50 for a 9:45 entry) The instructions given to us on the ticket were difficult to follow and the GPS kept taking us to entrances that were blocked off. When we queued at 9:25PM and finally had our tickets scanned, no instructions were given by the workers. Thankfully, there's a TINY banner under the front screen (which we only saw bc we were lucky enough to be in the front row) to "tune into 88.3 FM" where some guy on screen told us what to expect/rules followed by christmas music recordings lol. After another 30min of waiting in queues, we were told to tune in to 87.9 FM (all xmas music) and we finally began at 10:15PM. All the workers seem like they were over it as much as we were at this point. It was over by 10:30pm. For $41 for a 15 minute drive through mediocre lights and subtle advertisements... No thanks (though I appreciate all the work that was put into putting up the physical decorations and lights). At least the kid squealing in the car behind us was excited. read more

This is for the 2022 trail of lights . This years trail was actually pretty cool . They have tons of rest areas food trucks galore and not to mention bars at every eat area . They also have live music and tons of gift vendors . You can take as long as you want so slow down grab some snacks and have a few drinks in between each section . I'd recommend the Zip pass but if you don't feel like spending the money there are plenty of accommodations for you to still enjoy the place . Zip passes include special rest areas and covered seating free hot chocolate and cookies but best of all indoor lit restrooms which come in handy with babies and toddlers for diaper changing scenarios , porta potties are the last place you want to have to change your baby. The attractions are a bit pricy but at the very least get some Ferris wheel tickets for the view and some photos of the Austin skyline . Remember to take your walking shoes don't show up in fancy footwear or you will be in a world of pain by the end of the trail and the walk all the way back to your vehicle . Take a stroller if you have small children because they will inevitably get tired and make you carry them and don't forget to pay for a parking pass online before you arrive or you won't be allowed in the designated event parking . We love this Austin tradition wandering through Zilker to see all the Christmas exhibits and lights (and also to visit Santa's village for treats and sending wishes to the North Pole). The Ferris wheel and carousel were big hits too. Santa is also available to take pictures if you want to sit in line. Crowds vary with the time and day - it can get quite crowded - if you've got little ones you may consider a stroller since the evening will run close to bed time (if not past) and they'll be tired. There are local food vendors providing bites and drinks and live entertainers as well (nothing like a little caroling!). For me, this event isn't complete without some kettle corn and hot chocolate. Wander across after your done and see the Zilker "tree" strung on one of the moon towers (these are actual historical sites all over town). Note - parking is a bit of a pain and takes a little time - so plan accordingly. read more

Level set your expectations and if possible, try going on a weekday. Crowds will be more manageable at that time. The ideal time to go is about 30 mins to an hour after it opens. Pro tip: If crowds aren't your thing, go across the street to the Zilker Holiday tree instead. There's no entrance fee to the tree and they've got food and merchant vendors . This could be a great trail if they actually had lights lighting the way to the trail. You have to go from the tree, down a rocky hill, across a busy street and through a field with little to no lighting. It's hard to navigate as most people who are attending this have children and strollers. BEWARE OF THE GOLF CARTS! They do not stop. They don't care if you a pregnant woman in the middle of crossing the street with your stroller. They will hit you. Had my stroller been a sticking out an inch more my 16 month old and me would have been fully run over and not just clipped. If you are going to attend this I highly recommend bringing flashlights. Not only to see the trail to the entrance and back out to the parking but to use the restrooms as there are no lights around them. Would also be great to shine in the golf cart drivers faces so they see you clearly in the middle of the road. A lot of older decorations and really no attempts to repair them. The food from vendors was really high. $5 for hot chocolate or $10 for a pretzel is just wrong. We had an adventure getting to the entrance - we biked what would have been a twenty minute walk and if there is a next time, I definitely would not be carrying a crossbody. Yup, as others have noted it's a cluster fluck trying to access the area on a weeknight. But once in the park, it's truly a wonderful experience. I had the opportunity to be the Plus 1 for a change for a corporate Christmas party so we had close-in parking, a tent with food, and adult beverages. It's busy on the trail and you have the usual bungholes who decide that it's great to take a group photo or 10 and end up blocking the path. But ho ho ho it Christmas so chill and enjoy beautiful displays. We did check out the food trucks and there was quite a variety and of course, prices were jacked as you are a captive audience. My advice eat & drink beforehand. Parking was a breeze and there were plenty of attendants available to direct you. When we left around 9:30 PM people were still pouring in. Lots of traffic. Expensive. I miss the walking days, and while I haven't been in 3 years, maybe 4, it's still roughly the same light display. We paid close to $80 for the early bird access which allows you 5:45PM access. It also includes a bag goodies. The goodies are a few bottles of H-E-B water and some cookies. The cookies were actually good! So here's the thing. We waited in line much longer than it took to drive very slowly through the lights. I think we waited close to 25 minutes to drive through the lights and once we started moving it took us about 15 minutes to drive through. I think they did a good job keeping the show running with COVID. It's better than nothing and they came up with a creative solution to allow the lights to continue. It's just that the walking experience is so much more fun and if your little one happens to be super interested in something you could stop for 5 or 10 or even more minutes to let them look. With the driving, you are expected to keep moving. I'll be back if they open it back up to walking, but I won't do the driving again. We live NW and took us about an hour with traffic to get there, 40 minutes to get home and 40 minutes at the light ( most of it was waiting). For us it was a ~2.5 hour adventure for 15 minutes of lights. The kids themselves liked the lights but quickly lost interest after 5 minutes. They were more interested in eating the cookies or sticking their head through the sunroof. read more

I've been going for years and years but my kids and I decided this was our last year. Horrible customer service and planning. We bought the zip tickets. We got in line for parking at 5:30 like we always do. It took us until 7:20 to get to the front of the line to be told the mud caused them to close the lot and had us scan a QR code showing other parking around the city. There were four workers there all standing together chatting at the end of the line. No one in the 2 hour line to tell anyone it was closed and therefore you're wasting your time and so enter mopac. No one. It was almost like they thought it was funny? By the time we got in, it was shoulder to shoulder crowded. And just not fun. All the sets are looking old. we were just miserable. Light shows in smaller cities that I have visited were an order of magnitude better than this one in Austin. Also, there are no maps nor parking info associated at the website. Thank you so much to everyone involved with making this year's event happen. I know it wasn't easy turning it into a drive-thru due to COVID, but it was great. My daughter loved it. They have everything organized really well, so we weren't waiting in line too long. Also, you can tune your radio to the station provided and they have celebrities readings stories and singing songs.
