    1st show of Summa 2014!
    Benigno A.

Truly one of my favorite things about Austin Summa! Encapsulates everything that Austin, TX is supposed to be. Yes it will be hot, sticky, humid, parking sucks, dogs will be everywhere (Dog Lover here so it's cool with me), college kids, kids, hippies, families, and that good ol Austin kind spirit. The crowd is generally kind and fun. There will be wacky tabaccy, cigs, wine, beers, liqueur, picnic foods, flag poles, glowing hola hoops, drones, rugby players, and a bunch of folks having a great time. I love me some ACL and SXSW, but they aren't about us locals anymore. BOTG still feels like it is ours. Although, I admit it feels like it is also slipping away. I have been going since about 2002, and I have seen a ton of changes in that time. Like everything, BOTG is becoming more commercial and less about Blues, Jazz, or local Texas acts. We joke each year, that next year will be the year they start charging for this BOTG Summer Series. Tell a man he can make a $, and he will try to make $$. BOTG seemed to play a lot of DJ music and advertisements, with less less live music this year. I hope the guys that run BOTG read this and go back to the Blues, Jazz, Country, and BlueGrass that made it what it is. Understand I am only critical because I love it and want to see it continue to be a pleasure for our locals and summer visitors. I bring this up, not to be facetious, but to urged you to go out and enjoy it before it is gone or they start charging. Nonetheless, you will see incredibly talented artists, no matter what type of music you like. I personally love me some Blues and Jazz. I would love to see Gary Clark Jr, Black Joe Lewis, Jimmie Vaughan, Marsha Ball, Seth Walker, or Los Lonely Boys play again. If you really are getting Cra Cra some WILLIE would be awesome!!! Pretty Please!!!

This is a truly authentic Austin experience! Everyone out in the grass hanging out, drinking and being friendly! You can feel the Austin neighbor vibe! I didn't care much for the music but loved the atmosphere and vibe! I didn't even care that it was super hot and I was sweating buckets. If you haven't had a chance to go, I would make time! Definitely get dropped off and picked up though to avoid the cluster of traffic! I also think the flag idea is a must to find your friends! I will go again and again!

Bring the dog and a blanket! Always a fun time and usually a beautiful sunset. You can hear from anywhere, but if you love the band get there at least an hour early to be close enough to see.

With the VIP pass there is a backstage viewing area.

Enjoy some summer music in the park, but bring big spray, a cooler and a blanket or chair. No complaining because it's hot! It's Texas in the summer. Lots of vendors and freebies. Also, this time we sat in the VIP section. It's pricey but fun for a change. Fans really help. Also, 2 drinks and dinner is included. The comfy Adirondack chairs are great and there is a backstage viewing area.

It's begun! Every Wednesday take off work a lil early, pack a cooler, snacks, blanket, your dog and roll out to Zilker for live music and good company. One of Austin's best summer events to relax and enjoy the sky line.

This place is an Austin institution and one of the best places in the city to experience live music. This historic venue has been a local hangout for great music since the 1950s. The club was dimly lit with lots of stickers, graffiti, neon signage, paintings and interesting artifacts. While it has been a long time since I have been to the Continental club, it still felt truly Austin and very unpretentious. In the Continental Club you are literally I feet away from the live music. A dog was sleeping on stage, which made the place feel homey. The club is small and intimate, exuding a super personal persona. In addition, the sound quality is excellent for such a small venue. Tonight we listened to Hot Club Cowtown...they sounded folksy and a bit country western yet enjoyable to listen to. Folks were boot scooting, so maybe more country western. Mike the doorman was super personable and helpful. He happily provided the WIFI password and was super engaging. In addition, it is important to note the cover was free until 9 pm. The crowd was a mix bag...locals, tourists, and musicians who love live music. Austin is affectionately known as the "Live Music Capitol of the World". Great music...great time!

So let me make sure to give ACL its due props! I was encouraged by my ex to put my name on the RSVP list for this exclusive experience and I hesitated at first. I tend to avoid all things in downtown. But I'm glad I didn't ignore this. Jon Batiste is not just hype. He is the real thing. Pure talent, fully present and full of joy, he is poetry in motion. Being able to experience a performance like that at ACL, free of charge, felt special in a way that's hard to explain. As my baby used to say, it was COSMIC. Austin City Limits ran the event flawlessly. The staff was kind, organized, and they clearly knew what they were doing. Our seats were super high up, but the view of the stage below was very good. We missed part of the intimate opening set down below right in front of the VIP section (an intentional special treat for them), but it was easy to appreciate why special donors were treated to that moment up close. What really stood out was the second half of the show. Jon Batiste and his band turned the venue into a New Orleans style second line, moving through the crowd, singing/dancing/playing music, eventually making their way up to the upper levels by us. It was thoughtful, inclusive, and joyful. No one was left out of the experience. The night itself was bittersweet in hindsight, but the music and talent was undeniable. The memory stands on its own. Thank you, Austin City Limits, for a night I'll always remember.
