The only thing missing from the sordid state of these poor animals is the Sara McGlaughlin song that you hear when visiting this overgrown weed infested junkyard of a zoo. Read on please, this is a serious and sad review that I wish I wasn't writing. I love visiting zoos in every city I go to. I've probably been to 30 or so, and that's not a lot, but enough to rank Austin Zoo as the worst in this country - surpassing Sacramento's zoo! 20 years ago, Austin was much smaller and the zoo was just getting started. The lack of paved sidewalks and unique animals was forgivable. Now, after 20 years, the zoo has done little to improve. The place was dirty. The run-down exhibits and stark and unmanicured landscape made it impossible to move around in. Forget bringing a stroller to this zoo as most of it is unpaved, treacherous, slippery and not at all kid-friendly. There was no refreshments other than a vending machine, and probably the worst of all. The restrooms weren't kid friendly, with no soap, no step stool for a four year old to reach the faucet and obvious details overlooked. (The signs inside the restroom notifying people of the bird flu had slipped behind the mirror and based on the discoloration was probable that way for weeks.) The reptile exhibit is very problematical. The sliding doors that open and close them are easily accessible to kids. In fact it is the first thing a curious toddler will touch. The doors may be latched, but the fact that they can be opened from the outside is a glaring oversight. (Specifically for the beaded lizards) The lack of shade, zoo staff, and the absentee animals only added to the atmosphere, as if the entire zoo were sponsored by Ambien. Little things like cold water fountains are uninviting and there is no music, and outside of a parrot outburst there is nothing to create a "flow" within the zoo. While stumbling around the zoo grounds, I fell while trying to keep my four year old from slipping as well. The staff I did meet were exceedingly nice but inexperienced. The zoo is a non- profit but you either make a go of it or get these animals into a healthier environment and shut it down. The principle failure in this zoo is in their PR department. We support several primate sanctuaries and they are holding galas and events and are out driving donations. The Austin Zoo, to my awareness, had little to no community outreach and overall this looks lazy. You need caring animal people, you need logistics and inventory management. You need staff that take an interest in the customers. But must of all, you need animals that are full of life, not lifeforms. The cages were in very rough shape and needed desperate cleaning. Some of the metal is rusted, chipped and just upsetting to see. Who speaks for the zoo? Does anyone in management even read these reviews? I notice that very few are ever answered. Any thinking person would see that for a place that claims to be animal stewards, they are negligent. How come no one among the staff picks up trash on the grounds? Why did I have to find empty hand washing jugs at multiple different places in these zoo? (ESPECIALLY in the petting zoo!) I would send a great many of these animals to other zoos and restrict the size to a paved concourse. The zoo lacks an aesthetic look that other zoos have and simply is not easy to walk around in. It is completely unfriendly to handicapped people! Many of the exhibits failed to have animals, which was a blessing in a way, because it expedited our desire to abandon the park before every wasp, hornet, fire ants, flies, and vermin stung us too. (My grandsons legs look terrible) I didn't even get to the steep price for entrance. Normally I support these places but the San Antonio Zoo was competitive in price and would have been far more enjoyable. Not worth even a free admission to be quite blunt about it. My daughter went to the zoo for her field trip which I had tagged along. My daughter and her classmates really enjoyed their time here at the zoo and I did as well. The zoo is a bit small and can all be seen within the hour but bring proper walking shoes as the paths are dirt and there are some small inclines here and there. It was a very hot day and some parts had shade but many do not. There is an indoor reptile exhibit and I would make a pit stop there when you need to cool down in the A/C. I didn't see any food booths or trucks, just a snack booth by the train and vending machine. To be fair, I wasn't looking because we brought our lunches but I would bring food just in case. The animals were lazing around but were very clear to see. My 5 year old didn't have any issues seeing the animals behind the rail. Workers were very nice and our visit was memorable. To those who are posting negative reviews, based on your other experiences of government funded Zoos, shame. The Austin zoo is a RESCUE ZOO, its a private, non-profit zoo, with over 300 animals across a 100 different species. For what it is, and what their mission is, it's a great place to bring your kids to get out and walk on the trails and look at all of the animals that were rescued. They have a train that runs on the half hour, you can buy tickets at the train depot that is by the alligator cage. Wear walking shoes, and do not bring a stroller. read more

I want to remind everyone that this is a NONPROFIT RESCUE zoo. This means that all the money made goes back into the zoo and it's animals. As a keeper here I want to encourage people to remember that! We try our best with the money we make to give the animals the care they deserve. People complain about construction but that means improvements are being made for the animals so.. is that really a bad thing? I understand from an outside perspective how the animal enclosures seem small and they are cagey, but the more people that come to the zoo the more we can change that (so spread the word!) For anyone concerned about not seeing animals, I recommend coming in the morning. Our animals are most active then, when the day has just started and they are being fed! Normally after feeding time comes nap time to stay out of the Texas heat, so definitely think about that! We love our animals. We would not spend all day every day caring for them if we didn't. We provide constant fun enrichment and ways to keep them entertained. After reading some Yelp reviews and the zoos website before visiting, I had a better understanding of what to do expect. Yes, it's a sanctuary so it's much smaller. However they do keep a wide variety of well taken care of animals and I love supporting their mission and purpose. Zoo keepers are doing their best and it shows in details. Man, those tortoises were having fresher salad than I normally offer to my kid. I could hear the crunch from feets away. Just writing about it makes me hungry...for the salad not the tortoise, obviously. Our favorite part definitely was the choo choo train, it was a long ride and well worth the price ticket. The feeding zone is fun as well. Another great thing is although they do sell food and drinks, guests are allowed to bring their own. An excellent example of how a small zoo can shine! The Austin Zoo is a relatively small establishment that bills itself as a 'rescue zoo'. As I was informed, this is the forever home for many animals who've been removed from unfortunate situations. It's especially nice that many of the signs outside the enclosures will detail the situation that the given animal came from - escapee from an exotic animal collection, purchased when an owner couldn't care for them, et cetera. There's a nice selection of exotic animals for a small zoo, and a fair number of the 'exciting' photogenic ones: cougars, tigers, bears, emus, and a bunch of llamas and alpacas with 'boy band' haircuts. While I didn't get to ride it, there's a cute kiddieland-style train that circled the property and can be boarded every hour on the hour. There's also a cool gift shop at the beginning/end of the park where you can get a stuffed toy version of your favorite animal. But all that pales in comparison to what I liked best, which was to see how well-kept this zoo is. Clean, well-maintained, and the animals are sleek, fat, and happy. If this is their forever home, then they've ended up in a good spot. A couple of Pro Tips: 1) Wear real shoes, not flip-flops or sandals. The paths through the zoo are dirt and rock, along with some slopes. There are some trip hazards for the little ones or for the mobility impaired. 2) Go on a moderately cool day, as we did. IMO, April or October would be the best. The animals will be more active and you'll get more out of your time there! Zoos are meant to provide a healthy habitat for exotic animals to live healthily in an area where they can be viewed by people. Austin Zoo does not provide habitats for their animals, their lions, tiger (they advertise tigers, but 3 died last year... how and why?), bears, alligators, and other large animals. It provides them barely more than a cage considering their size. The score this zoo has on Yelp is bizarre, it was a depressing experience and I've been to a fair amount of zoos, my only thought is these reviewers have not been to another zoo. This isn't a zoo, don't bother as it is more depressing than entertaining or instructive. If you can't provide adequate habitats, you shouldn't keep these animals. Side note, check your car for dents when you leave, their peacocks like to escape and peck cars to death. I will not be going back, I was astonished how poor this one was. As someone who works in animal rescue this zoo is incredible . Love how each enclosure has how the animal arrived there and get to know more about them . I see many people in the reviews complaining about the foliage and other plants growing in the enclosures . I think that's amazing compared to most city funded zoos with sterile enclosures. It gives a sense of a more natural feel to the enclosure and helps some of the animals hide if they'd like instead of being on full display even when they don't want to . I took my wife for a surprise trip on her birthday and she had a really great time. This place is bigger than how the reviews say, super clean, and the animals are great. She really went for the capybaras, of which there are three, and loved seeing them. They are located in the middle of the facility and is surrounded by free roaming peacocks. She really enjoyed the feeding area as well, full of alpaca and goats. There are lions, tigers, and bears(oh my) there as well and are very well cared for. Oh Austin Zoo how I love you so.... I've been here well over 20 times throughout the years and it always feels like a homecoming. It's quirky and earthy just like Austin. Most of the animals are rescues of one sort or another. And I dig that. They have recently added some new animals and are constantly in transition growing and expanding. Every animal trainer and employee we saw today were very pleasant and informative. I personally suggest you pack a lunch if you plan staying there for more than a few hours. They do only have vending machines as food options at this time. The petting zoo is hilarious and I will never ever never get tired of petting/feeding the llamas and alpacas. Fun fun fabulous family fun. All money spent there goes towards the massive upkeep so don't be stingy and take your kids to this special sacred Austin treasure. You can even sponsor animals and habitats. So if you got the cash to help them I highly recommend doing so. Oh.... Lower your expectations...okay, now lower them again. Keep in mind, this is a non-profit rescue zoo. It's not necessarily meant to be entertaining or flashy. Overall, it's not a terrible zoo. Surprisingly, there are a wide variety of animals to see, some you can even "pet" (i.e. harmless goats). Good things to know - the walking paths are natural, as in mostly dirt and rocks. Wear comfortable, closed-toed shoes and be prepared for a SERIOUS leg workout if you bring a stroller. Lots of hills & rough terrain. I'd advise against going right after it rains because it will be a muddy mess. Also, there's little to no food options available for purchase, but you can bring your own drinks/snacks, and there are plenty of picnic tables to take a rest / snack break. We visited for the 1st time with our 4 year old grandchild. The train ride was fun and well thought out. We were able to see many of the animals up close and personal and of course my grand daughter laughed with delight at feeding the goats, deer, lamas and the goats again. I finally made it out to the Austin Zoo on a Friday afternoon after living here over a year now. I knew very little about this zoo besides that it was smaller, I could buy discount tickets via Groupon and it was an animal sancutary. It was easy to find off the main road leading back to rawhide trail. Once there you park in a stone parking lot for free. Once parked you will need to go inside to the gift shop where you pay to enter the zoo. It was a simple process. We were given a few quick pieces of information like where the restrooms were located, that the peacocks could be feisty since they are in mating season, and a map of the zoo for our viewing pleasure. Some word of advice before entering, you will want to bring your camera/phone for pictures, you are allowed to bring your own water and snacks (there are a few places to purchase drinks throughout the park), and wear SPF and bring extra for reapplication. While in the park my husband and I saw: tigers, lions, bear (oh my), lizards, snakes, peacocks, turtles, monkeys, wolves, goats, llamas, etc. No elephants which was sad for me since they are my favorite animal. You can actually get pretty close to the animals safely which I loved and great for children. I also liked some random facts about if you ever considered owning an exotic bird and how it wasn't a good idea. It's definitely a smaller zoo but I enjoyed every bit of it. The tickets aren't expensive at all. The staff is amazing. All the animals are well maintained. They are fed well and the water in their environment is very clean. Loved seeing the bears and farm animals in action when it was time to eat. Everybody is allowed to feed the goats and it's a very fun activity to enjoy with your kids. It'll bring a sense of joy and smile to their face. You're allowed to take as many pictures a you want. Although the place is under construction in some areas, I liked how the animals are kept in their cage, with a fence around it. The zoo shop has amazing accessories to take home. We took a short family vacation to Austin and in my research to find things to do that would keep my children entertained, I came across Austin Zoo. We are a family of animal lovers so of course we were immediately excited. I was definitely intrigued by the fact that it was more a sanctuary than a traditional zoo but it did make me nervous that the kids might not like it. Thankfully the kids absolutely loved it! They were excited by the variety of animals. My daughter was sad about the lack of giraffes but that's mostly because she's used to the Dallas Zoo. Feed can be purchased in the gift shop upon entry and there are goats, sheep, and llamas that the kids will have a blast feeding. The only complaints they had were about the heat but of course that's not the zoos fault. Overall it made for a great family outing and we definitely recommend. Sure I wasn't expecting a grand palace of animals, but it definitely was a underwhelming venture. All the art on the walls is faded and looks rather dull and not well kept. And the zoo itself lacks a lot of joy with no sound/music in the air rather than the gravel under your feet than can easily be used to throw at the animals( very poor infrastructure trait.). All outdoors and open almost every single day of the year. We love getting up close and personal with the lions, but my daughters favorite (since she could walk, now 5) is always feeding the goats/deer/alpacas and the train. Get a train pass if you think your little will want to ride more than once, otherwise it adds up: $5 per person, but kids under 2 ride free. Just remind yourself its a non-profit. In addition to every day operations they often have special events (cheetah birthday party!), camps, etc. The earlier you can get there the better, at least in the summer - they open at 9:30. Wear closed-toe shoes (gravel), and bring snacks/lunch to have a picnic. (Right now, you must also wear a mask.) If you don't end up snacking there, I recommend stopping at Graceland on your way home for BBQ and playtime. We get a membership every year as a Christmas present for our family and it's well worth it if you go over and again. A membership makes it guilt free to just pop in for an hour when you need to get out of the house! We also get early access to Boo at the Zoo which is a bit hit. read more

Things have changed since Covid but as members we can go whenever we want without having to make a reservation. We've gone for quick trips but also spent more than 2 hours there- it just depends on how we feel that day. I'm excited to see the enhancements they are making and love seeing the updates they make for the animals on their care. This place is tucked away in the very back of a neighborhood and you may feel like your going the wrong way but trust me it's there. Due to covid you do have to pre-buy your tickets online. I missed that memo but luckily I was able to purchase tickets from the parking lot. I went at the end of August. I do not recommend this due to the heat but I had family in town and they really wanted to go. We check-in at the front wearing our masks (required) and head into the zoo, it is currently one way and they have orange fencing guiding you around. I saw previous comments of people hating on this zoo. It is smaller and not paved but at 11am all the cages were cleaned and they had food and the animals that were with caretakers we're enjoying being with their handlers. This place is a rescue zoo so my favorite part was reading how the animals ended up at the zoo whether they were owner surrendered, orphaned, or rescued from pharmaceutical companies. If you do decide to go in the middle of summer, go in the morning while the animals are still active and the gift shop has popsicles for $1! read more

I love the entire concept of the Austin Zoo and Animal Sanctuary!!! Yes, you can view animals; however, it is certainly more Sanctuary than Zoo. Almost all of the animals, including the reptiles, are rescues, adopted, under a doctor's care, or born at the facility. People have mixed feelings about animals in captivity...well, the animals at AZ&AS are getting the best treatment possible and are definitely not exploited. They all have outdoor and indoor enclosures - the A/C is turned on during days above 90 degrees. It seems like the place is run mostly by volunteers - all of the staff express their love for animals and all of the enclosures and cages are kept super clean. Really impressive. Ticket prices are very reasonable - or I prefer to state it as "donation amount for entrance": $9 for adults and $6 for children, especially given the fact that the zoo allows you to bring in outside food and beverage. AZ&AS is not on a mission to "make money" like other large "zoos" (a trip for 4 to world class San Diego can cost well over $100 for a visit!) - they simply want to earn enough money to keep the facility running. They are indeed a non-profit org. Onto the FUN STUFF: While the facility is fairly small, there is a lot to see! You can take about an hour and a half to look at everything or really take your time and spend several hours. There are lions, tigers, bears, reptiles, birds, tortoises, monkeys, lemurs, prairie dogs, baby porcupines, more...and goats, deer, and sheep to feed ($2 for a large bag of food). So cute! Each enclosure provides information about the species, the particular animals history and how it ended up at the Sanctuary, and the name given to the animal (some are very creative = witty; love the way its "personalizes" them). TIPS: 1. Wear comfortable shoes. The trails are uneven and covered with crushed granite. Flip flops are not such a great idea because the granite get between the soles of your feet and the top of the flop and can cause abrasions - yep, it happened. 2. If you want to be sure to see all of the animals, especially the larger mammals, arrive early in summer months before it gets too hot outside - the animals will seek shelter from the heat and will be hidden. 3.
