Our house was several years past needing paint. In fact, we'd resorted to stop-gap solutions to the wood that was starting to get exposed! The previous painter 15 or so years ago had also done a goofy/lackluster job, which added to the complexities of our current paint project. Steve and Authority Painting were prompt and organized when meeting us for a quote/evaluation, and replying with the itemized estimate. Since materials for every house improvement project are backordered forever, we got on the schedule for a couple months out. Right on time for the estimated time frame to start, they were able to begin this week. Our buildings are a bit difficult as my in-laws, who owned the home prior, built TWO extra garages, so essentially it's like painting a large 2-story house, or more. There is also a ton of detail in the exterior, so this made masking/painting a real pain. Steve's team arrived on time, was courteous, and asked questions when they weren't sure about an aspect of our house. They left each day by cleaning and tidying their work area as well. The work itself was super-duper, and completed within the estimated amount of time. The paint went on very tidy and nicely coated and refreshed our house. It looks very high-quality and like it will last for years and years, which is awesome. Hard to explain unless you see it: the paint "pops" and the lines are very clean! Steve addressed all the concerns I had about the previous shabby state of the house and paint, and my concerns that he would need several coats, etc. His and his team's experience in dealing with a variety of problems proved a real asset, as they could anticipate and prevent problems that would have blindsided me if I chose to DIY (trust me, don't DIY exterior paint, get a professional!). read more

ETA: I emailed Steve for a quote to get him to address the workmanship issues not because I thought the cabinet work was outstanding. It was also before he confirmed UtraSpec 500 use. My 1st post I'm careful with my words. It was good before I did some research which I regret not doing before hiring him. 6 mos later there are issues Steve won't address. He didn't ask me to send the pictures, I sent them proactively. The pics I posted were preexisting none of which were touched up. Re: Steve's comment that he didn't use ProMar, he used Fleur de Sel 200 in my living areas. 400 he bought for any touch ups to ceiling or trim (to match my builder). Please see the pic with all the paint cans for proof of the cheap paint he used for the job. The color switch happened. However, the 1st time I saw Sea Salt it didn't cover well in 1 coat. Steve said he could apply another coat but that would cost me extra. After looking at it, I hated the color and changed it to Iceberg which still cost me extra. Please look at the pic with white streaks. It is an example of 1 coat of paint. If white is bleeding through, then 1 coat wasn't enough. Steve didn't offer a second coat as part of the original job unless I paid more money. While there are 5 star reviews, my experience was not. Steve doesn't mention the messy kitchen blue paint line, the white parts of the blue toe kick, or the white streaks bleeding through. Those are clearly from Authority's workmanship. The other marks in the guest and master I stand by my original comment that I didn't touch them up. And unfortunately, Authority Painting will not touch them up either despite only being 6 months. The customer service is lacking. I'm obviously unhappy with the work but rather than collaborate/help, Steve does nothing. To sum it up, I think Steve uses the worst quality products and does the least amount of work (1 coat) to make the biggest profit. ___ Unfortunately, I have to update my review to 1 star for several reasons. On the 1st day of the job, Steve's crew tried parking in my garage and the ladder on his truck damaged the drywall of my garage. He fixed it but it was a sign of things to come. Paint spills and bleeds on floor. Some of it was cleaned up while some still remain e.g. bleeding where island kitchen cabinets were painted. One I told him about in Dec was never fixed becoming permanent now. Kitchen cabinet toe kick wasn't fully sprayed. Still showing white. Flashes/dark spots in master and guest which I did not touch up. 1 coat of paint initially. I did not know it was standard to use 2 coats of paint. Steve thought my bath would be fully covered in 1 coat but when it didn't, he charged me extra for it. That's when I started calling other painters and Googling. Turns out 2 coats is the norm. I had to debate with Steve about it and ended up paying 300-400 extra to get the majority of my walls painted in 2 coats. I didn't do the master bath because it was gonna be another 100. Bad decision as the old white color is now bleeding through. So don't expect 2 coats. He painted living and bedrooms flat and bathrooms semi gloss. I wish he did more of a consult with me so that eggshell was chosen. I just agreed to his recommendations. Turns out flat is also a lot cheaper than eggshell too. Steve used ProMar 200, Promar 400, and Ultra Spec 500 paint. They are poor quality contractor grade paints and cheaper for him vs Regal Select or SuperPaint. Ultra Spec 500 was even used on my kitchen cabinets instead of paint formulated specifically for cabinets e.g. BM Advance or INSL-X Cabinet Coat. Feel totally tricked and ripped off. Not surprisingly, the paint is already in bad shape. Another bad sign was no official contract before the job started. It was over email. It was only after discussion about the 2 coats that we signed a contract in the middle of the job. The contract itself was lacking details. No proof of liability insurance, workers comp were offered (though I never asked). Once Steve got paid he only answered emails. I wanted help to address issues. He wrote to touch things up myself because he was busy. When I asked again, he suggested that all the problem areas were my fault, that I caused them all. While I tried touching up 1-2 areas, it was only because I noticed defects in the workmanship before I even attempted any. The remaining areas I didn't touch despite Steve being convinced I did. He doesn't want to honor his warranty despite telling my mom that he would guarantee his work for 1 year. Guess not. Very disappointed and I do not recommend Authority Painting at all. It is my worst decision ever. Sloppy work, don't do 2 coats, chose cheap/improper paint, and don't care about you once done. Steve claimed "any marks, scuffs,blemishes,etc..Were caused AFTER we completed the job and were paid in full." You be the judge based on my review and pics I submitted. read more

If you don't look too closely, the work they do looks good. But if you are keen on details and good quality work, you may be disappointed like we were. Steve was very confident when he toured our home that he would do a far superior job than whoever had last painted our home and assured us his team wouldn't be sloppy or careless with their work. We were quoted about $5,000 for our living/dining combined room, master bedroom, bath, closet and stairwell. I should have been tipped off when they said they do not do any prep work like washing/sanding the walls/baseboards as those are very important steps in the quality of the final product and durability of the paint job. However, we proceeded to hire them. They did get the work done according to schedule and were prompt and reliable. We were put off that after the first day they called us to tell us that they thought they would need a second coat for the trim and baseboards, and that the cost of that was not factored into the price, so doing an extra coat would cost more and require an extra day of work. I was very surprised that they didn't clarify that 2 coats were only to be applied to the walls, not for the baseboards/trim. I'm not even confident they did two coats on the ceilings. We did have one wall that was painted the wrong color, which they corrected. And they also broke a shelf on our master closet organization system. They asked us what we wanted to do about it. I wanted it to be fixed or replaced, but it wasn't. I believe they gave us a small amount of money ($100 or less) for the damage, which doesn't resolve the issue. In the end, we have what looks from afar like a nicely painted room, but there are sloppy lines and edges and dripping paint everywhere. I painted the rest of the house myself, including proper wall prep prior to painting, and the other rooms do not have any of these issues. Because of this, I would not hire them again. read more

We had our small condo painted in November after patiently waiting for a couple of months for a spot to open up with Steve. But he and his team are definitely worth the wait. Steve was helpful in providing feedback in some of the color choices I had for the walls and trim. The color wasn't a drastic change but I just wanted to get rid of the yellow tint from the previous wall color in all the rooms except the bedrooms. Steve & his crew painted the interior of our house (walls, ceilings, trims), and we're really happy with the end result. I called more than 5 different painters, got quotes and decided to wait for Steve and his team because: (1) Steve was responsive throughout the entire process, and he is very detail oriented; (2) the project was expected to take ~7 business days (other painters were quoting 10+ business days), and it ended up being done faster; (3) the pricing was competitive; (4) he used Benjamin Moore paint, which was better rated than other paint brands; Steve was responsive via email/phone/ text msg (which is really important to me). He came out and gave a quote on short notice, provided us with color wheels so we could choose a few options, and painted samples on the wall so we could make a decision on paint colors. He also suggested paint models (?) within Benjamin Moore but didn't pressure us to purchase the more expensive one. Throughout the process, I did not feel pressured to add additional work to the project (i.e. paint closets, etc.) or make decisions. In the middle of the project, I wasn't sure if I wanted the bathroom painted the color I originally chose. I called Steve in a panic and he was very understanding. I needed to get my house painted, but was putting it off because I didn't want to hire the wrong contractor and get a paint job I would regret or worse. I decided to check out Yelp and found Authority Painting and Steve Clem. At the same time, I had another quote from a contractor who was recommended by a friend, but Steve struck me as more knowledgable and technical about preparation and painting. Steve and his worker spent a week doing my house. About half of that time was preparation work, which is as important, if not more, than the painting itself. The final job shows great detail, as in clean lines, even color and no slop. I am extremely happy with the results If I had another house to paint, I would have Steve do it. As it is, I am having him stain my deck and paint most of the interior in the coming weeks, so that should count for something. Steve pressure washed my house, did all prep work, painted my house and cleaned up every bit of mess in less than a week - like a month ago. I've been promising to leave a review, because they really were (are? i assume they're all still with us) great, but what can i say that hasn't already been said 80+ times? Steve went over all the details of paint colors and where each color would go, even tho i told him that i don't care! He still made me look. I think other people like that kinda thing. The guys were all super nice and accommodating. When i got home at lunch to let my dogs out for pee breaks, without hesitation they got out the way. I told them they were welcome to express themselves artistically - and they did. I was in search for a reputable and quality painter to repaint the interior of my home. I asked friends for referrals and scoured Yelp, where I came across Authority Painting. Several reviewers mentioned that Steve was a busy man and customers had to wait for spots to open up. I needed to repaint my house asap before I moved in. I suspected timing wouldn't work out but I thought it was worth a shot to contact Steve. I gave him a ring and left him a voicemail. It's up to the painting gods now. Steve returned my call shortly and we discussed logistics. Since it was a very wet February, he actually had availability to take on an interior job the following week. We scheduled a time for him to drop by my house for an estimate. A really great and convenient aspect about working with Steve is that he is available on Saturdays so I didn't have to take time off of work to meet with him. During the walk-through, he was generous with his time and guidance. I wanted a light cream/white color but the current paint was a bluish grey. I wasn't sure one coat would cover the original color but Steve shared helpful recommendations. After receiving his quote (quick turnaround time), his pricing was very competitive and lower than what I received from other folks. So we settled on the colors and got to work. When it came to the actual painting, Steve is not present for the jobs. His crew does the painting but he instructs them and provides all the details. Steve might be the star but his painters are the real SUPERstars. They are incredibly professional and thorough. They did a wonderful job repainting my walls, baseboards, and ceilings (and my living room has a very high ceiling). Cut lines along the ceilings where the color changed were straight. I wanted to remodel my master bathroom but that was going to take several weeks. I asked Steve if he could paint the entire house except the master bathroom, and then return once the bathroom was complete. It wasn't ideal, but Steve was accommodating. About 3 weeks later when my bathroom was close to finished, Steve returned with one of his guys to paint the vanity area. I also asked him to do some touch ups because my movers were not so gentle on our walls. Again, not a problem. I'm extremely satisfied with the quality of work and the interactions I had with Steve and his team. I can't stress enough how terrific his team is. The damage to a hallway wall corner was severe.....but when they finished patching, sanding and painting it looked like new! They did a terrific job of matching original paint colors in our 15 year old home......and used the very highest quality paints. The crew was friendly, neat and punctual.....arriving right at 8am each morning. They happily touched up and painted a few additional spots we found......and did not need to increase the quote. They're a busy crew so I would suggest to anyone painting large exteriors to start planning months ahead since there are a few great months in the Bay area for outdoor painting while others are more rainy/ windy, etc. Aside from our painting, we had some issues with needing wood repairs on our chimneys. Steve worked with us to find a time to coordinate the two projects and kept in touch with me through months of the process. When we had difficulty finding someone to replace/ repair the wood, he found someone on his crew to help and we were able to get things done appropriately. They came to work when they promised, completed the job as estimated time/ cost-wise, and cleaned up after themselves. After looking for a while and calling various places, I was most impressed with Steve at Authority Painting. A few tips: when you're looking for a painter, you should ask about their contractor's license, insurance (if they'll put you on theirs while the project is being done), and if they provide worker's comp for their painters. Many other painters in the area will quote you lower, but will NOT do the above. BE WARY. Lawsuits abound. If a painter falls off a ladder and you have to use YOUR homeowner's insurance, you're screwed. Pay a little more for protection. After interviewing Steve, he was the only one who checked out on all above requirements. I was flexible on time, but he was excellent at getting back to me quickly. Other posters say he doesn't return calls, and I NEVER had that problem. The team that works with Steve are EXTREMELY professional and prompt. Start time was 8:00am and there wasn't a day they weren't here early. The prep work was phenomenal and the painting was fantastic. My old house posed a few issues, but they carefully and quickly resolved. I really felt like I was listened to, and that I could trust Steve and his team. I feel very confident that I chose well and the quality and comments show. I highly recommend Authority Painting for your exterior painting needs (though I hear they do interior, too!) read more

Steve spent a long time going over what we wanted done. He had a cancellation so we actually had the work done a few weeks ahead of time. We picked out the colors we wanted and Steve had some suggestions. He gave reasons why he thought those colors might work better for us and he was right! I completely remodeled a 26 year old 2br, 2ba townhouse in Foster City. I removed acoustical (popcorn), wall paper, replaced interior doors, installed new cabinets, trim & baseboards throughout. Steve, the owner of Authority Painting, scheduled an appointment came out and quickly earned my trust (not an easy task). Steve was careful to ask questions about my needs & desires. He also pointed out areas needing attention I hadn't thought of. We discussed colors, textures, finishes, etc. I was pleased to find Authority's quote the most comprehensive and competitive. We scheduled a date to begin and Steve came out with his crew who immediately went to work meticulously preparing the place. They were careful, conscientious and seemed content. One guy on Steve's crew has been with him for over 20 years and another over 12 years. They were all awesome trades people who take pride in their work. As the president of a small HOA, I am tasked with finding and working with contractors for the community property. Out of 4 bids, Steve was the only one to bring up potential dry rot areas that should be fixed prior to painting and a product that can be applied to the full sun side of the building to reduce peeling. Steve is personable, observant, thorough and asks all the pertinent questions he needed to do the job. He also listened very well in response to our vision, preferences and concerns. His quote was competitive and reasonable, and we set up the job. Steve is very accessible through phone and emails, and our communication was perfect. The Job: Steve and his crew showed up promptly, on time and each day he reviewed the day's work to be done with them and also reviewed the work they had completed. The guys worked hard, paid attention to detail and cleaned up every day. This was estimated as a 5 day job, and they actually finished a day earlier than estimated. They were also very nice guys! The house looks brand new, and the paint work is clean, edges are sharp and body and trim colors are even and straight without overlapping each other unevenly. Nice job! Steve and his crew did an amazing job on my house in San Leandro. I never thought that my house could look so good. I hardly recognized it when I saw it. There was no overspray. The attention to detail was unbelievable. They even touched up some damaged areas of the gutters while they were prepping them for paint. I can't say enough good things about Authority Painting. I recently engaged Steve to paint the outside of our house. Steve made several visits to talk about logistics, review paint selection, and best of all, he worked with us to figure out a challenging schedule since we needed to get into the neighbors side yard to do some of the painting.
