This is a little hole in a wall. I'd call it a blue collar diner/cafe with a bunch of options for breakfast and lunch. You're definitely going to see the locals here and this is No frills breakfast tables are clean. Bathroom is clean. I did three eggs over easy with raisin toast and bacon and the triple Berry muffin. The bill for cash came to about $17 with coffee. The coffee was surprisingly good. I'm kind of a coffee snob but I need to wake up so I took the cup of coffee and realized I didn't have to add cream and sugar like I usually have to in a diner. The one waiter was busy but very friendly. Okay food came out in a ample amount of time and I was in and out in under a half hour. You're not looking for thrills and frills here. This is food on the road that it's good and will keep you full all day but you ain't looking fancy in this place. I enjoyed it and thought it was well worth this drop in but I would say it was on the lower end as far as breakfast joints in appearance. For me that doesn't matter. First off this is a diner that most people probably don't understand that is informal and inexpensive. The coffee was good and without a chew. I ordered the sausage gravy and eggs. The eggs were scrambled with cheddar and silky smooth. The gravy was firm and had a great peppery flavor. The biscuit tasted like an english muffin with extra yeast. The home fries were absolutely perfect, cut small and crispy. I grabbed a blueberry muffin to go. The service was provided by the owner who is rather eccentric but very friendly. I was hankering biscuits and gravy with eggs and the Auto Mile hit the mark! Fantastic food, reasonably priced. Old Orchard Beach is a 5 minute drive away and this place is worth the trip. The dining room is on the smaller side and the waiter/owner clearly enjoys his job, at times serenading his customers along with the radio in the kitchen. An unassuming exterior turns out to be a wonderful local diner! We came on a Sunday and there was a line, didn't end up waiting too long. The woman working the front was also taking orders in an exceptionally friendly and efficient way! She seemed to know many of the customers by name and maintained positivity no matter how slammed she was! Once seated, I ordered a asparagus, ham and cheese scramble and my husband went for steak and eggs. There was an option of hash browns, home fries or beans with our orders. Coffee came quickly and was hot and solid, seemed to be a medium roast, and there were creamers on the table. Our order turned around quickly. My scramble was wonderful, lots of perfectly cooked asparagus. My order came with toast (I picked rye) and hash browns. If I have any constructive feedback, it would be to brown the hash browns a little bit more. My husband LOVED his steak, said it was perfectly cooked. As I know he is hard to please, I took a bite, and it was excellent. There seemed to be all kinds of delicious menu options posted on the walls. I think (?) that these postings are the menu, which works, and provides plenty to look at while waiting. I noticed a bunch of great looking pancake, french toast and waffle options. There was also a pan of HUGE chocolate chip muffins out to cool when we arrived, which looked fantastic. It was busy, and turn around was quick, but we thoroughly enjoyed our meal. I will absolutely return. If possible, I would recommend a weekday morning for a more leisurely pace as there is a lot to take in! read more

My annual pilgrimage to Maine starts with breakfast the Saturday morning our rental begins -- and there's no place else I'd rather have it than at the Auto Mile Diner. For anyone who had just an "ok" meal, I encourage you to give it a second chance -- it may have been particularly busy at this tiny place, or simply an off day. Because every time I've gone, the breakfast has been perfect. We've had various egg dishes, pancakes, waffles, etc. -- everything is made fresh and to order. If you add fruit to pancakes, just know they are usually the ones that come in syrup -- so if you're looking for something healthier, be sure to ask for fresh berries. Coffee is excellent; service is welcoming and reliable. This is a local place, and we go in very humble that we are "from away" and are guests, not only in the state, but also in this town. The staff and regulars know each other well and banter about each others' lives, and so we often feel like we are eating in someone's home rather than at a typical diner. It's been four years, and we haven't missed a summer yet. Encourage you to come, and come back to, this wonderful example of why Maine is my favorite state to visit! read more

After traveling by the Auto Mile Diner for years, my husband and I decided to stop for breakfast this morning. After being seated by who I assume was the owner, we ordered a large OJ (very good) and decaf coffee (not so good as it was instant coffee). When it was time to order my husband was going to order a 3 egg omelet for us to share and I was going to order something sweet to share (a muffin/french toast). I was informed quite rudely that we could not share a plate and he showed where it was stated on the menu. As much as I disagree with this policy, our plan at that point was to each order something and share as we chose but he was adamant that we could not share a plate! He brought take out cups over to us and stated, "The drinks are on me, this place is obviously not for you guys." My husband and I are in our late 60's and eating breakfast out is one of our favorite past times. We have never experienced anyone as rude and disrespectful in a restaurant situation as this man was. We will definitely never go back! Side note: We drove down the road and ate at St. Joe's Cafe in Scarborough which was incredibly good and extremely friendly staff. A great experience! This was a lucky find off the beaten track of a blessedly non-touristy area of Maine. It was a recent early Saturday morning and we were hungry. We stumbled upon Auto Mile Diner and were glad we did. When we first arrived there was only one other table filled but this small, quaint place quickly filled up very soon thereafter with what seemed like locals and regulars. The lone waitress was extremely friendly and welcoming. I ordered a swiss cheese and bacon omelette with shredded potatoes. My husband ordered an omelette with what seemed like everything in it...all kinds of meats and cheese. He ordered this with a side of home fries. Nice to have a choice between shredded potatoes or home fries. Breakfasts come with a side of toast or English muffin. Our omelettes were large, filling and very good. The coffee was delicious. Our waitperson told us that everything here is homemade. There is a menu but where you want to look is on the wall where there are colorful hand drawn breakfast menu specials. We were tempted by some fresh out of the oven triple blueberry muffins but we already had more food on our plates than we could finish. This place also serves lunch and dinner and the menu options for those meals looked good. At one point when it got quite busy, one of the kitchen staff came out and helped serve. At another point, the chef came out and was mingling with a couple of tables. At certain points there was singing coming from the kitchen in tune with the music that was playing in the background. Clearly the staff likes what they do and have a good time doing it. It was a rainy, raw Maine morning but the warm vibes in the Auto Mile Diner were just what we needed. read more

The Auto Mile Diner is little diner/sub shop, which serves up breakfast and lunch, located along Route 1 in Saco for lunch takeout very recently. The atmosphere inside is not fancy and pretty cozy with a homey full service dining room and a takeout counter. The menu offerings include egg dishes, 3 egg omelets, home fries, pancakes, French toast, burgers, subs, sandwiches, seafood, and comfort dishes (ham steak, spaghetti & meatballs, NY sirloin & meatloaf to name a few). For those with an appetite, the Auto Mile Pile Up (3 eggs, 1 pancake, bacon, ham, sausage, homefries, & toast) should do the trick. The prices here are pretty fair, most entrees priced $4.75-$12.95. I took a lunch break very recently and stopped in at the Auto Mile Diner for some takeout. The solo waitress was handling the dining room, running the takeout counter and making subs, so it took a few moments to order. I ordered a Large Italian Ham & Cheese Sub ($4.29). The sub itself was pretty decent and messy to eat which had sliced deli ham (semi thick and slightly salty), provolone, onions, tomatoes, green peppers, pickles, and black olives with an oily Italian dressing on a soft white sub roll. She is a regular at this establishment, was there one day. She was waiting for a table because 2 members of their party had not arrived. My mother told my sister they could have sat at a table for 4 where people were just being seated because they were beginning to think the others weren't going to show. George, the owner heard this. Came out to where my mom was and literally screamed at her about telling him how to run his restaurant. REALLY? 1. Who screams at a regular?. 2. WHO screams at an 89 yr old woman?? 3. They have the BEST hash browns! While we waited a bit for a table, this place is well worth it. The staff could not have been more pleasant or accommodating, and the food was fantastic! They have only 8 tables, but if you get the chance, go there. We would have gone back our second day in town except they are closed on Mondays. While small, the atmosphere is casual and friendly. I looked online for good breakfast restaurants to take my family to while vacationing in OOB. When we walked in, we were "greeted" by an older gentleman who said "just so you know, it's going to be very slow service because we're understaffed". I said in an accepting tone, "that's ok, we understand" to which he laughed and said "oh, I was hoping I discouraged you". Then I heard the tone he was using with the minimal customers that had actually stayed. I decided to take my family elsewhere. I understand being short staffed, but there's a right way and a wrong way to handle it...this was completely wrong. I'm guessing he won't care about a negative review because he clearly didn't care about people choosing to leave the establishment. But hopefully I can save someone the time/energy of going to this establishment that allows a bully mentality. read more

Best breakfast in the State of Maine that I've discovered so far. The coffee was rich. full-bodied and delicious. I love coffee and am hard to please but Auto Mile far exceeded my expectations. And why not? They are located along Route 1, set back slightly from the road in a nondescript building, half of which was available for rent. The building is nearly surrounded by an old macadam parking lot. When we first pulled into the parking lot we were just a little unsure. What did we learn yet again? Don't judge a book by its cover. The restaurant was bright, fun, and our table (and all the rest) felt very much like a chef's kitchen table. We loved the handwritten and illustrated menu on the wall- helpful for those travelling South from Quebec who may struggle with English. The help staff was cheerful and helpful. The breakfast was divine. I had the best hash of my life, with nice large eggs and thick, tasty bacon. The orange juice was ice cold and sweet- I swear it was fresh squeezed. I ordered the large hash and eggs and wish I had ordered the small- too much food for this big boy from Pennsylvania. This is a must for breakfast lovers travelling through Southern Maine. I went here while visiting the Scarborough area on vacation. There are surprisingly few breakfast options in the area (aside from the hotel continental breakfasts) and this was a great surprise.
