I visited Auttarote Thai Cuisine while on a business trip. I was told that this Thai restaurant has some truly authentic Thai food so I was excited to try it out. When I walked in, I was both skeptical and kind of in awe at the same time. It felt like I walked into a movie set or a Christmas themed museum or something. There are so many decorations up but it also kind of just works. The first thing I'll bring up is the spice level. The spice levels are pretty similar to the true Thai spice levels. A hot level was giving me a good sweat while medium was just enough to burn the tongue a bit. The food itself was adequately described as authentic and delicious. The papaya salad in particular was very similar to the ones I've tried in Thailand. Great portion size and ratio between papaya and the other vegetables. It was absolutely delicious. The other reason why this restaurant is awesome is the customer service. From when I walked in to when I left, the server and who seemed like the manager or owner made sure everyone there was taken care of and didn't have to wait long for anything. Honestly, the outside (and even the street) looked a little sketchy, but stepping inside was such a surprise--it felt almost like a speakeasy. The colorful décor gave the whole place a lively vibe. We didn't have a reservation, but since it was a Monday night, we were seated right away. As vegetarians who don't eat eggs or fish sauce, we were a little unsure about what we could order. When we asked, our waiter kindly brought out an entirely separate vegetarian menu, which was amazing. The spring rolls were absolutely delicious, but the massaman curry was a bit disappointing--it was watery and lacked flavor, though the portion size was generous. What a beautifully decorated restaurant, from the time you enter, through the stairs and the actual restaurant. The most enjoyable dish for me was the Papaya Salad. It was flavorful with hints of lime and just the perfect amount of fish sauce. The Crying Tiger Beef dish was also a winner. Pad Sew was delicious but lacked the smokey flavor I'm used to. We had a great experience at Auttarote and happy to have found our new go-to Thia restaurant. It's located in the heart of downtown in a building that looks like it should have a massage parlour on the top floor. However, it houses three interesting looking restaurants, including Auttarote. My first reaction to the decor was that it was a bit tacky. However, once you're there for a while, experiencing the great food and service, you'll realize that it's perfect. Food was delicious, with lots of gluten free options. We shared the Panang Curry, Chicken Satay, and Signature Crying Tiger beef, all delicious and gluten free. My wife also had the spring rolls, which she said were excellent. Service was gracious, attentive and professional. It also has a pretty good drink menu. Maybe my only criticism is that it's getting a bit tired, bathrooms especially could us a sprucing up. Nonetheless, we'll be back to try more wonderful food. read more

It was a Wednesday evening so we didn't make a reservation, but we were able to be seated quite quickly. However, there were a lot of patrons dining. The staff were incredibly nice and attentive. We ordered the Pad See Ew with pork and the Penang curry with chicken. Everything came out pretty fresh and hot. The noodles had a sweetness to them, they weren't my favorite of all time, but they also weren't the worst and hardly any good pork. I really enjoyed the curry because it was full of fresh vegetables and lots of chicken. If you do want any rice for your curry, though it is an extra charge. The Thai tea presentation was fun but extremely sweet. Overall, it's a really fun spot, but it is quite pricey for Thai food! read more

This was my first visit to Calgary and the only place we ate at since it was just a stop through but wow! What a little gem. A beautifully decorated space, with lovely staff. We were seated immediately, even though it was a busy Saturday night. We ordered the flower dumplings which are both beautiful and delicious! My friend and I both ordered pad see euw- hers with tofu, mine with chicken. Generous portions; I did notice mine didn't have any carrots though. We started out with Signha (beer) and Shrrey Temple (mocktail) and Toong Thong (fried dumplings). The dumplings were hot, tasty, and were paired with a yummy dipping sauce. Our entrees were Seafood Pad Kii Mao and Panang Curry with a side of coconut rice. For spice level, we asked for Thai spicy and they delivered! The flavors of each meal were delicious, fresh, plentiful, and addictive. If we lived closer, we'd be here often. We may have to vacation in the area again just to enjoy Auttarote again. After scouring through the number of restaurants in the area I settled on Auttarote. Last time I was in Calgary I dined at Termeh (Persian) which is on the lower level and I wanted to try Auttarote since I saw it before. The restaurant itself is very aesthetically pleasing so that set the standard off the bat. Service and hospitality was absolutely wonderful and you can tell the waitresses take pride in their job. I started off with the tom-kha soup with chicken; I have to be honest it wasn't like soup I have had elsewhere. There is a distinct flavor to tom-kha and this seemed a little watered down. In truth there was some disappointment. Next came the spring rolls; crispy and they were tasty so full marks there. For the main course I went for Panang curry. Once again the flavor wasn't bad but something was lacking. As I cook I want to say it lacked that coconut flavor and some salt. In truth it was okay and nothing to brag about. I will give them marks for portion sizes and price point as they are very fair. I really want to try this place again but having been there already, I have some apprehension when I compare this food to Thai food in Toronto or around the US (where I live in the DC area boasts some great Thai food). Perhaps I may decide to try Auttarote again on my next layover in Calgary. read more

So good! Highly recommend. We were in Calgary for just one night prior to heading to Banff. We were here during the stampede and the restaurants along 8th Ave are packed, Auttarote is just a few blocks away from the craziness. It is a bright second floor location and has a great, vibrant atmosphere. Service is excellent. The food was super. We had the papaya salad, basil stir fry, ginger stir fry, and two curries. We ordered some plates to enjoy family style (there was a cheaper lunch menu but we wanted to try more things.) The service was excellent, the owners were keen for us to enjoy the whole experience! Incredibly good experience. This place is really new and replaces what had been a dim sum restaurant, on the second floor of this rather dumpy building on the south edge of Chinatown. Inside, it's very spacious, cavernous even, with lots of space between tables. I got one of the lunch specials, pad ka pow and I chose chicken as my protein and requested traditional Thai level spice. This special includes two very good spring rolls and perfectly cooked jasmine rice. I should've taken a photo because the plate was gorgeous, with a mess of minced chicken in a rich brown spicy sauce and, be still my heart, a fried egg on top, just as it's supposed to be served. Flavour was DEEP, the chicken.was minced thigh, every bit was as good as Thai I've had anywhere. This is authentic stuff- no white meat chicken, no chopsticks (chopsticks are not used to consume Thai food, except, sometimes, for noodle dishes- USE THE SPOON!), lots of pork and fish on the menu.
