Penicillin
Teresa G.

We were pleasantly surprised to find this place with great food and service not too far from our hotel. We visited twice during our vacation in Calgary and we loved the vibrant feel and tried several items on their expansive menu. Wide array of cocktails to choose from. My husband enjoyed Penicillin which is a mix of Johnnie Walker black, honey, ginger, lemon, lagavulin peated whiskey. My daughter savored her Brazilian Lemonade which is a mix of rum, whole lime, and sweetened condensed milk. I had a Virgin Mojito which was refreshing. Another time I tried another zero-proof drink. I believe it was called Hey Hibiscus. Delicious appetizers that we enjoyed were: *Creole Crab & Spinach Dip served with corn tortilla chips. *Chili Citrus Calamari is crispy fried, sprinkled with chilis, szechuan peppercorn, and served with a citrus dip. *Truffle Fries freshly fried seasoned with truffle, herbs, grana padano, and served with garlic aioli. The main entrees were shareable too and we were delighted with the Peppercorn Ribeye which is this 45 day aged 14oz CAB® ribeye in brandy peppercorn sauce and served with buttered mashed potatoes and green beans. The healthier choices did not disappoint either: *Avocado Kale Salad with Salmon was delicious with crispy chickpeas, grilled avocado, pickled red cabbage, fennel chili crumb, grana padano, and lemon garlic dressing. *Szechuan Lettuce Wraps was this generous portion of chicken (our choice) in sweet and spicy szechuan glaze, sprinkled with a good amount of peanuts, wontons, korean chili sauce, and spicy yogurt. *Tuna Temaki was new on the menu and described as ocean wise™ ahi, toasted sesame, cucumber, serrano pepper, nori, green onion. We all wish we had a Cactus Club Cafe in the US. Google says they have one in Miami. Come to the San Francisco Bay Area with your solid 5 quality food, service and your upbeat, energetic and welcoming vibe!

Walked 20 minutes from our hotel on a cool Calgary evening to try this place and was not disappointed. We were greeted by the friendliest hostess, who guided us through the softly lit ambience to our table. We opted for indoor dining but the patio was tempting. Our entrees, Baja fish tacos and the med bowl with falafel were both excellent. The Canadian IPA was a great accompaniment. Our server was not only friendly, but personable. It was a great dining experience, except for the guy behind me who couldn't complete a sentence without using at least one f-bomb. But not everyone can be a Shakespeare.

A great option for groups. Varied menu with options for every type of eater. The szechuan lettuce wraps with tofu were well seasoned and a large portion, enough to share or order as your entree. The crispy tofu bowl was also good. It has great toppings and was a filling entree option too. The service was lacking a bit for our group, as the servers were talking more with each other than helping guests.

Great food, excellent service and classy atmosphere. The inside and patio were equally appealing. Husbands got the peppercorn ribeye and loved it. I got the blackened chicken with broccoli as I have a legume allergy and it comes with green beans. The staff easily made the switch and I loved it. They even threw in a free anniversary dessert! Yum!!!! The crème brûlée is very good...if ur curious, do iiit.

first timer at cactus club cafe! i remember trying to go in vancouver but now :D i would describe this spot as like yard house very comparable to the quality of food and vibes. we ordered calamari and it was so soft and tender; not as chewy as your usual kind. also ordered the scallop and shrimp ceviche -- and the sauce was very lemon-like and the avocado was smooth and creamy YOM my bf got this chicken salad and it was ~different~ from your usual salad lol the cocktails were okay imo

Even the water is well iced!

very popular casual dining in the N.E. In my view this is a consistent top tier location that presents the Cactus Club brand well. The reason this place is popular is consistent high quality food, cool vibe and variety of flavours from Feenie burger, famous squash ravioli, sushi aburi, steak frites and even vegan friendly dishes like the med bowl - yes I have family who are vegans so our venues sometimes are challenged As a west coaster, Would I feel ok ordering sushi or the poke bowl from a casual non Japanese restaurant in Albert? If it is at Cactus Club with high turns on fresh food, heck yah! I can also get awesome chicken wings and other dishes so something for everyone's palette I went here for the second time this week as I was originally going to compare the "earls/cactus club/joeys" family but did that before and returned to CC as it is in my view the best of the 3 in NE Calgary No surprises here, awesome food served properly seasoned tuna poke bowl and aburi salmon sushi with blue moon wheat beer Sitting at the bar to avoid the wait for a table. I had the Steak frites that was cooked perfectly to med rare with fresh fries (not oily) and peanut butter bar with top tier hagan da premium ice cream for dessert The parking lot was full on a Thursday nite at 7 pm If I had the foresight, I would have planned my evenings for happy hour as prices are much better for my favourite items This is my go to whenever I am in N.E. Another spot that the "locals" highly recommended, so of course I found myself here... Interesting menu, cool vibes and super friendly servers made my experience great! Chicken lettuce wraps and butternut squash with grilled shrimp seemed to be the go to, so I gave them both a try. Both were great and either could have made for a full meal!

A VERY special and LOUD shout out to hostess Phoebe for making my birthday EXTRA happy this past…read moreSaturday. Kind, well-spoken, gentle, efficient, always a smile on her face and she went above and beyond. I had a 12:15 pm reservation. Unfortunately a group was taking much longer than expected. I waited over 30+ mins to be seated and so yes, I could've made a scene, but that wouldn't be me. Phoebe could've just let things be ... you know? Because "it is what it is". But she didn't. Once she seated me and my friend, she offered to take photos for me and of me. SO thoughtful! She also brought me a beautiful ice cream with a sparkling candle in it. SO sweet! She smiled at me every time she walked by almost as a way to make sure I was doing OK and feeling good. She was WAY more attentive than our female server who looked, sounded and acted like she couldn't leave work soon enough. Wasn't going to let her dampen my birthday though... Food tasted good. Presentation was beautiful. The male server who took over was SUPERB. Genuinely happy to "close out" our transaction with him. He was super attentive and willing to make everything go well. Thank you, Phoebe and male server for making my birthday memorable. XO

You only have about 5 or 6 spaces since it seems like the rest of the spaces have a "no parking" sign in front of each space... wtf... The place was nicely decorated and quaint. Loved the vibe. We walked in at 8am, opening time, and there were two parties sitting already. We got seated and looked at the menu. Our waitress was very friendly and mentioned that the Queens Breakfast, and the Montreal Smoked Brisket were the popular dishes. I decided on the Omelette Al Tartufo and my wife decided on the Montreal Smoked Brisket with Poached Egg. The Omelette Al Tartufo was good. Had a good earthy taste of the truffle. They had truffle paste so a hint of real truffle was there. There was a bit of melted cheese in there but there was a good balance. My wife had the Montreal Smoked meat with poached egg, which was also good. Pastrami-like protein with a poached egg, presented in a croissant. Very good, but very filling. Eat this, and you won't be having lunch! All in all, good food, and good service.

For the owner, I can't say the same He has asked me "so, how can we can we improve at Betty Lou's". No matter what you say, it doesn't really matter. The owner seems to weaponize feedback, which is completely toxic. Sure, you're the owner, absolute respect to you for making this fair in this industry, it's accomplishment. However、please do not ask serving or bartending staff if you don't want genuine feedback. The owner will act against you. We requested one time that Blaine (the owner) does not come on floor if he's had more than two drinks and if he's not dressed in proper uniform. As an owner, sure, to some extent that's fine. But when you threaten a server, who is still new, you will fire them based off how long you're doing menu tours is not acceptable. If you didn't know, menu tours are just running through the drinks and food, which can take a considerable amount of time when you are busy. Now imagine the owner is so disconnected from the reality of the service, is also five drinks deep in the office. The owner will award you back off a few good days, but if you have one review where a customer believes you didn't believe you delivered "a personable experience" you're done. Now, that seems rough, but imagine an owner who values complete bullshit over actual truth. But I mean hey, would I work an environment where the owner can flip a switch, absolutely. It doesn't matter So hey, if you get hired at Betty Lou's, got bless you You can have a good few days, but ultimately, it doesn't matter. There is no HR, no general manger, you know why? They've left, to better and more complete opportunities that Betty Lou's cannot offer. If you're looking for any place to work, please, reconsider Betty Lou's. We saw they were going to open at 11am, and decided to try our luck by getting there right at opening since we didn't have a reservation. We got lucky and got seated right away! - PARKING - Street parking, make sure you take note of how long you paid for! - SERVICE/ENVIRONMENT - The ambiance inside is so nice and airy, with greenery and natural light shining through. There's also a super cute swing area next to the bar area that you can sit. I really liked the overall interior design! The staff was very attentive for our large party throughout our meal. There are bathrooms downstairs as well. - FOOD - Bacon Jam Benedict ($20.00): Loved the flavor combination in this! The sweet savory maple bacon jam worked so well! We upgraded to the fried potatoes ($4.00) and they were pretty tasty. Carrot Cake French Toast ($24.00): We got one to share with the table, and I'm glad we didn't commit because it was just OK to me. I wish there was more mascarpone filling, and also a different sauce than chocolate because it didn't pair well for me. Winter Nights ($19.00): We wanted to get some greens in and chose this salad. I enjoyed the mix of greens and also the fennel salami which gave a salty bite! Truffle Parm Fries ($13.00): We also got this to share with the table and you can't go wrong with these! - OVERALL - Great brunch option if you have a small or large group! I did a comparison of earls and cactus club to compare food quality, service and ambiance in Calgary North west as several establishments are within 5 minutes drive of one another and a Joeys next door to this Earls Took awhile for my server to attend and it was not very busy I ordered the same dish (Steak frites) at each establishment and here is my feedback taking into consideration variances in cuts of meat as I'm going to assume the suppliers may be the same I prefer Cactus Club as although it is more expensive at $34 vs the $28 here at Earls noting that the Cactus club version is 7 oz vs the 6 oz are Earls. I like the greens at CC better than the Earls kale mix. Fries were freshly made at both but CC beat out Earls on this front as well. So my take is this I love Earls as the gold standard for best Happy Hour meals for this category but this location seems lacking Case in point i asked my server if I may order the Wings but rather than Hot, I asked if they still did Salt and Pepper. I was told yes they offered it I got them but they were very poorly seasoned and lacked flavour. Not the case at other Earls As a regular at top tier Earls such as Vancouvers Yaletown and Burnabys Metrotown and Amazing Brentwood, this location needs an management review as they have fallen behind on the other "family" standards This review was done on a Wed night at 6ish non happy hour and it was only moderately busy whereas CC was jam packed last night at same time which echoes my sentiment that CC is much better and more popular than Earls in the NW All 3 facilities are "related" but I would go to CC given the proximity for quality of food, service and ambiance
