Monday night dinner. It was great. First thing I will stress is that this is a modern take or Indian fusion. Great place to come if you are ok with that. Hugo stepped in and helped since our primary server was busy. He did an amazing job and made sure our experience was top notch. I started with the wicket looking for a spicy and sweet cocktail. It was ok, the garlic chili oil was a bit strong and took over the rest of the flavors. I wanted wine with the meal and Hugo went above and beyond. He brought out 3 recommendations with healthy sampler pours as well as the bottle to take pictures if I liked one of them. His choice of the riesling was spot on. It was not too sweet as I asked and had some earthy notes to it. He had the lamb kati and curry and chips for an appetizer. The lamb kati was outstanding. The ground lamb was cooked perfect with a hint of spice and flavored very well. We got chicken on the curry and chips. That was also very good, my only feedback was the chicken although flavored well was just a touch dry (would probably do the ground lamb next time). For diner we both had the lamb entree with a side of basmati rice and naan. The entree was outstanding, the lamb had a nice salt and pepper crust with great flavors. The naan was soo good, I called them elephant ears because of the size. They were flavored so good. We did not let a drop of the rogan josh sauce got to waste. Even though full we tried a bite of their deconstructed cheesecake type dessert. It was refreshing and lightly sweet. A tasty bite. Great experience, great food and even better service. read more

When I was in Calgary to check out Banff, we decided to stop by Calcutta Cricket Club to try out the Indian cuisine within the city. We came during lunch time and there was quite a bit of space, so we were able to be seated quickly. The interior of the restaurant is nicely decorated, with an ambience that would be good for hosting events. For the food we decided to order the Chili Chicken, a Kati Roll with Lamb Keema, and chicken. I think that the food here was flavored well and I especially enjoyed the Kati Roll as the paratha was really crispy. The portions are a bit on the smaller side though, especially for the price of each dish. Overall, I think it's a nice restaurant to have Indian food at if you're visiting Calgary. read more

On our last evening of a short trip to Calgary, we decided to indulge in the city's Indian cuisine. Not naan and chicken tikka masala; a full-on Indian feast. The Calcutta Cricket Club, which offers a tasting menu called the "Taste of Calcutta," was just what we were after! The restaurant moved to its current location at 1213 1st St. SW in December 2023 from its previous location on Calgary's 17th Avenue. This new - and larger - location is just about a half-kilometer from the Calgary Tower and the many hotels that surround it, making it an easy walk to the restaurant and, importantly, gave us the opportunity to walk off some of what was sure to be a filling dinner afterward. We arrived a few minutes before the7:15 reservation we'd made on OpenTable and were shown to our seat immediately. The 100-seat restaurant was moderately busy and would get busier very shortly. Our server brought water and menus within moments of our being seated, made recommendations when we told him we were going to have the tasting menu, then took our drink orders. With our solid food choices already made, the only thing left for us to decide were the wines to go with it. My wife chose an off-dry Riesling while I opted for a Pinot Gris. Both complemented the spicy fare we were going to have quite well. The first items brought to our table were a bowl of chaat (a potato salad) and a plate with three different chutneys: mango, pineapple, and a green chutney called "hari." It's made of coriander and mint leaves, garlic, ginger and chilis. Modest heat, despite the chilis. Once we'd tucked into the potato salad, our server brought the other items on the first course: a tomato salad, achari paneer and chili chicken. We thoroughly enjoyed the chaat, tomato salad and chicken but felt the paneer was a bit on the bland side. Even generous portions of the curries didn't help much. The second course consisted of our choice of curry served with naan, basmati riche and lasooni raita. Intending to "compare and contrast," my wife chose the lamb curry while I went with butter paneer. Other options included eggplant, mussels, prawns, and chickpeas. Given my comment about the achari paneer, it's important to note that we chose our main courses before sampling the appetizers. Otherwise, we'd likely have chosen something other than the paneer curry. The lamb curry was our favorite. Lots of flavor from a variety of spices, but none too hot. The paneer had the same sauce used on butter chicken so had a bit more flavor than the paneer appetizer, but still wasn't as flavorful as we'd have preferred. The naan was hot and tasty, the basmati rice fluffy and light, and the lasooni raita provided a nice, cooling note (if one needed it). Dessert was the "Chef's Choice." Unfortunately, we didn't note the name but it tasted very much like the best cheesecake you've ever eaten, but with a much creamier texture. Throughout the evening, the service was excellent. A variety of servers, expediters and even the manager would bring the new dishes to our table and clear the empty plates, keep the water filled, and offer to refresh our beverages. By the time we were finished, the restaurant had gone from modestly busy to completely full and had started to empty out again. Understandable, as one does not rush dinner with such an extensive tasting menu. As we were getting ready to leave, the manager came by to make sure everything was to our liking, which indeed it was. Obviously, we enjoyed some items more than others but there wasn't a thing I'd call disappointing. And we thought the price was very reasonable: CAN$55 per person for the meal, plus beverages and tips. With three glasses of wine between the two of us, a gratuity for our server and an additional $10 tip directly to the kitchen, our evening out was about $220. We also tried the lamb biryani which was nothing I've ever had in North America before - IMO it's a must try! The malai chicken was so juicy and flavorful and tender. Can't contain except for the intentional and manipulative over priced soft drinks from speciality brands as opposed to a normal. Everyone knows that owners drool over a 1000% mark up, it'd just be nice if they didn't also think that everyone is stupid enough to think it's reasonable. And what is it with people not putting ice in drinks, seriously stop being cheap or lazy and put some ice in your lukewarm water. The deserts are insanely sweet and kinda gross. Ran into this spot after leaving the Calgary tower and we absolutely loved it! It was my very first time trying out Indian food and it was an absolute success! Very aesthetically pleasing spot. The service was phenomenal and waiters gave great recommendations! Drinks were super unique and delicious! Definitely check them out and try out different ones. Great and varied selection. Started off with chicken curry which was very rich and flavorful served over fries. Then ate Murgh Makani and chicken Malai with basmati rice and naan. Those are some of the top dishes in this restaurant and we truly enjoyed it. The murgh makani was very well seasoned and a bit spicy. The chicken malai was a very comforting dish, creamy, light and delicious! We took some naan with us as a snack on the plane as we travel back home. Be aware of bill: Happy Hour CAD$ calculations: Read mixed reviews and decided to give a try. Sat down quickly in an empty restaurant at 2pm at the start of happy hour. Decor is very nice and waiter was nice and we confirmed again that happy hour is "buy one get one free". So we ordered 2 x Puri, 2x Lamb Empanada, and 2x Beef Tartar. Food: Puri $8 each was good with 4 decent size. Everything is there, but the flavor of the sauce is little too mild and lack some acidity. Lamb $9 each: Flavorful, but the pocket was more like a filo dough as oppose to bread dough Tartar $17 each: Two small Indian bread with tartar on top. The sauce covered the meat so much that it was hard to judge the freshness of the beef, which was a bit fibrous at times Billing: When the bill came, instead of taking one tartar, lamb and puri off, and essentially 50% off, they charged for 2 x lamb, and one lamb, and took of 3 cheapest items. Service: Asked the manager to correct the bill, she refused. I told her that our waiter told us "buy one get one free", manager stated that it was getting 3 cheapest free. I told that this is false advertising, she disagreed. Outcome: We paid for what was charged to us, and will be contesting these charges from my credit card dispute service. read more

Came here for our anniversary dinner tonight, was over 2 hours. The value is just not there, the food is barely ok and the service wasn't great...but at least the atmosphere is nice. We went with the Taste of Calcutta which gives a wide variety, our second course wasn't entered so the food came out extremely late and came out wrong. Had to wait to get the right order. The Murgh Makhani only had 2 pieces of chicken but at least it tastes good, the butter paneer was bland and boring... Whatever the dessert was, well it was inedible. FAR TOO much cardomon and salt. Just awful. So for $200, there were only 2 things that I actually enjoyed. There are many other places I would suggest going to as this place is overcharging for substandard dishes with lacklustre service. Save yourself the disappointment. read more

Absolutely gorgeous restaurant with an interesting modern Indian menu. We had a party of six and everybody liked everything we tried. My favorite was the cabbage dish, which maybe isn't for everybody, but it was spectacular. I was underwhelmed by the yellow daal it was thin and a little meh... But I spent lots of time in South India, and have lofty daal expectations. Attentive service. Portions could be a little larger, but that seems to be how it goes in high end restaurants and this one is worth it for the fantastic menu and absolutely beautiful ambience. The restaurant has wonderful vibes inside with their super cool and thoughtful design and decor. We sat at the bar, which has these vintage lamps that make it perfect to see and eat food up there. Ordering one main dish, one side of rice, and naan was enough to feed two people. If you're extra hungry, you can definitely get away with ordering a second dish. Food: Spicy Shortrib (5/5) - This was definitely spicy but not overwhelming. So good! Basmati (5/5) - Cooked perfectly. Garlic Naan (5/5) - I could have a whole meal just of the naan! I was apprehensive making a reservation for this place for my dad's birthday, but we left pleasantly surprised with the service, food, and ambiance. The outside of the place doesn't look like much, but the interior is beautiful and well thought out. The food was great! We are an Indian family and are used to having Indian food routinely. It is important to understand that places like this have to accommodate to a large number of customers from a variety of backgrounds excluding desis, thus the flavor intensities may be slightly muted. We felt that the fish and malai chicken could've used a little more flavor. The daal was great and the naan was fresh. Loved the drinks and the staff was extremely friendly! However, deliciousness does come with a price and this deliciousness was a little more expensive then I like to pay. However, the reason this place is getting such a good rating is because of the decor. If anywhere gets an award for best decor or 5 stars only for decor it is only this place! I was reading the spring/summer 2018 edition of dote magazine today and I finally found out where the decor came from that I had to share: " Designed and conceptualizer by artist Maya Gohill, Calcutta Cricket Club has presented authentic Bengali cuisine to Calgary in a fresh and innovative way. The vibrant interior evokes a nostalgic feeling reminiscent of a Wee Anderson film, with soft pinks, unique textures, and a ferocious leopard hung over the awe-inspiring bar." Came here for dinner on a Friday. It's on the most happening street of Calgary which is the 17th Street. It has a beautiful decor although they can do better in their music playlist choices. Their servers are wonderful people. We got some unique cocktails from their menu which lived up to the mark. We also had kathi rolls - lamb and chicken..both were so flavorful and juicy. My husband and I decided to check out something different in Calgary since we were just visiting for a weekend. We walked in and the place was packed, we were glad we got a table or we assumed that the food would be great. We weren't that impressed unfortunately. The decor was super was different, a south indian vibe with leafy green wallpaper. We ordered the beef lolipops which were so amazing, they came off the bone like butter and the flavour was out of this world. We ordered the biryani that was cover in a dough which they opened at the table for us to allow the aroma to take over the sense, smart move, however the flavour was a total let down. We didn't end up finishing it or packing it up. The yogurt and the salad were decent but at par with any other Indian restaurant. I checked out the menu on the website and seems like it has changed. The new location is wonderful, 4 of us ordered $55 per person dinner, let me tell you the small 4 bowls of appetizers were really good and flavorful. Dinner curries in small bowls did not taste good at all, the prawn curry had two pieces of prawn lol. Same with other curries like 3 small pieces of chicken or lamb and the cauliflower was so salty. The desert of the day was gajrela we were told is on sweeter side, oh my goodness, it tasted like it had 2 lbs sugar bag dumped in the small bowls. We've eaten Indian foods so often and made us wonder how is this restaurant on the top list in Calgary. The menu says you get daal and raita, it was a joke, 4 people got the littlest bowl (which could be used for sauce for 4 ppl) of daal with even another joke which was Raita that probably was 1 oz little plastic thingy. We died laughing. That for 4 people who are paying $55 dollars per person. We received two bowls of rice which was satisfactory none of us is a big eater but 4 of us received 2 naans. Anyways before I had tasted the daal and raita I asked, is that all we are getting, so he brought another bowl of daal and raita. Then I had to ask if that's all we were getting only 2 naans. So he brought 2 more. After having half spoon of the desert which was supposed to be gajrela who knows what it was though we paid our $300 dollars bill for 4 which had two beers and a coke, and tip, as we were putting our jackets on, I mentioned to the waiter about the sugar bomb desert and he now at this time gave a substitute, something called misty dough, but why that choice wasn't offered when I asked what was for desert, why did we have to ask for daal or naan. They should mention that on the menu that you pay $55 dollars per person and will get half naan. I'm not only complaining about the quantity here I'm also saying only the appetizers tasted good that's all. I wanted to dine here because I thought the dining room was very stylish. However, it is a destination dining experience. Everything was perfect. The room in fact is beautiful and exotic. The service was impressively attentive and friendly. But the food was so tasty. I had the "Taste of India" tasting menu. The portions were ridiculously large for one person (but that is not a complaint). Even though the food is spicy, everything had a distinctive flavour. I have given this place many chances with the hope that food will be great next time but there is definitely something missing in the quality of food. The decor and the vibe is great and the service is great as well, which is why I wish the food was just as great, but it wasn't. We got Papri Chaat, Paneer Kathi Roll for appetizer and Aubergine, Naan, House Daal and Rice for main course. The food presentation was excellent. Paneer in Kathi Roll was a big cube and that texture of a big cube didn't work as well to bring out the flavors that a crumbled or smaller piece of Paneer could. It doesn't come with a chutney, we had to order it on the side. Aubergine was good. House Daal was cold but flavorful. Their Daals are my favorite thing on the menu and they have a different one each day. The Naan was too soft but almost made me feel like it's not cooked properly. I like my Naan a little crunchy. The quality and freshness of ingredients and/or preparation is questionable given that I didn't feel good after and the next morning. This is a good date night spot but the food is okay. I would go back only for rice and daal. It seems like they put a lot of thought in decor and presentation but fell short in quality of food. read more

This place is seriously fab! The decor is modern and the service was welcoming, attentive, and friendly. I came with my Indian partner who raved about the food as well. I particularly loved the Kati rolls, which I had never had before. Highly recommend adding an egg to your roll! I also really liked the Paneer and Saag. I was visiting Calgary for a couple days and Calcutta Cricket Club had such an amazing vibe I came back both nights I was there! The overall feel I got from the decor was my grandmother's pink bedroom meets Indian tribal chic. (If that's even a thing.) You walk in and instantly feel a little bit cooler and chicer sitting down at the pink-chaired, rattan tables. I came without a reservation both nights and was able to sit at the bar (there seemed to be a good amount of room at the bar for walk ins). The bartenders were all REALLY good looking and were also very helpful in recommending brunch spots, places for cocktails following dinner, and then some. In addition to being good looking and informative they also made delicious cocktails! The menu is very tongue-and-cheek with funny, punny names for food and drink items. The food itself is good, but not great. On the yelp scale I would give it a 3.5/5. The first night I dined here, I got the beef curry and it was very low on spice/flavor. The second time I came here, I spit 4-5 dishes with my girlfriends--We shared the beef curry, the masala curry, and the peneer curry and MAN did they crank up the spice. At one point I had to take a break from eating to let my mouth cool down for 5 minutes. It seems like the recipe varies slightly depending on who is in the kitchen, which is OK. It kind of gives the food more of a, "My grandma is in the kitchen and has been making these dishes for 50 years, it's never the same." type of feel. It's obvious when you step into the restaurant that the food is just one part of the overall dining experience. With Calcutta Cricket Club, there is so much more. It's the beautifully designed restaurant, the delicious cocktails, the attentive (and good looking) waitstaff, and being a part of the lively scene they've created. Great spot! Worth checking out for sure - especially during happy hour. Went with a group of six people and arrived just before 6:00 pm, in time for happy hour. Generally, I shy away from places that are less than four stars, but I'm glad we didn't this time. Our waitress was engaging, funny, witty, and hospitable. She encouraged us to get our happy hour order in quickly. So we orders a total of eight plates, doubling up on most of them. Here's what we recommend: - Papri Chaat - YES. A sweet and spicy mix of seasoned potatoes, chutney, chickpeas, yogurt and a dash of spices. Really good - medium heat. - Paneer & Honey - Personally, I really enjoyed it. Perhaps the best paneer I've had, the touch of honey and pistachios are Calcutta inspired and unlike typical Indian food fare. If you like some sweetness, go for it. At our table, it's was not a favourite but again I really liked it. One of my top 2 favourite starters that we had. - Chips & Curry - YES. It's basically fries (not potato chips) and curry - but the curry sauce is creamy and delicious. We had two and they went fast. - Chili Chicken YES YES! So good! Spicy - fried in a Sesame, Soy and Chili glaze. Wow, so good. Again two orders and were devoured! - Gunpowdered Vegetables - we only ordered one to get our fix of veggies. Save your stomach room for the other dishes. Mains were a mix of Kati Rolls and Entrees. - we split three Kati Rolls - two chicken and one lamb, all with an extra egg included. The roll itself was soft, tasty, and delicious. The size of the roll was a little smaller than expected and the contents (chicken and lamb) were good - but nothing exceptional. Worth trying - Trout Malai - YES. This was a favourite amongst the group. I personally had a lot of curry items already, so was a little carried out. But the ladies in our group said that this dish was their favourite. The trout skin was seasoned well - salty and light spices- and a perfectly thin and snappy texture. The trout itself was beautifully cooked - soft, tender, light - and picked up on the curry coconut flavour so well. - We also had the TFC. After two orders of the Chili Chicken, it was a lot of Fried chicken. It was yummy, but most of our group tapped out by then. To drink, we had an assortment of cocktails and colas. The bartenders are entertaining and take pride in their work. We sat close to the bar and enjoyed the overall energy level of sitting there. Great spot. Deserves to be four stars at least. I would definitely come back here with a large group. At happy hour, with plenty of food ordered and a few drinks, our bill was less than $200. That's insane - and way better value than an Earl's or Cactus Club for the quality of food and experience you get.
