The suite room we had was very clean and quite spacious. The bedroom bed was quite comfortable and our adult relative found the sofa bed to be fine. Two huge TVs with cable and smart TV streaming apps. Nice sized and very clean bathroom. Breakfast room and adjoining lounge space was clean, well appointed and well lit. Breakfast options were typical Continental offerings, along with a waffle maker. We didn't use the pool, but it looked nice. If you are going to hike the St. Croix Falls segment of the Ice Age Trail, we highly recommend staying here. Perfect location. Tippy Canoe Restaurant next door was handy, and good, and the Dalles House Restaurant and Lounge six miles to the north was an above average and classic Wisconsin Supper Club.

We literally got yelled at when bringing in our expensive bikes and were told they were not allowed. I had to tell him to lower his voice. There was nowhere to chain them outside so we backed up to the light pole in the parking lot thinking that was the safest place because it would be lit - there was no light in the parking lot. There were pest boxes hidden in the room. Could make a waffle for breakfast but the waffle batter and syrup were watered down. There are other hotels in town - stay at one of them - have to be better than this place. No one with that attitude should be in the hospitality business.

We stayed at Rittenhouse Inn last year for her birthday and it was nice. But, this place feels like home away from home with the nice touches of a warm welcome. We left our house after work so got here around 5:30PM on a Friday. Elaine had Sandy greet us and she was most welcoming with pamphlets of things to do. She prepared a local wine and cheese/grape platter while we decided for dinner. Plus, there was a bubbly mango sparkling bottle drink too for my birthday. In our room, she had some of Elaine's chocolate brownies ready for us as well. We ended up going to Swensons' Lake House restaurant only a couple blocks away. It was the best decision and recommendation from Sandy. Afterwards, we got the wine and cheese/grape platter from the fridge to relax in the gazebo. It was a nice a private area which we could enjoy the sunset. It was only the 2 of us in the house so it was nice to have some privacy with the house to ourselves. We woke up in the middle of the night and decided to enjoy some treats in the common area upstairs. We helped ourselves to some crackers and hot cider from Kuerig that Sandy showed us earlier. In the morning, we woke up and Sandy prepared our breakfast. We took a short walk around the lake and then to the church and back. Sandy was ready and served us a 3-4 meal breakfast. It started with a vanilla Greek yogurt parfait with cantaloupe, strawberries, and banana. Next, we had sausage with Havarti eggs and dill which was fantastic with some English muffins and homemade jam. Last, we had a bread pudding with whipped cream and chocolate chips. We finally got some great recommendations for hiking and checked out with Sandy. We enjoyed the wine so much that we visited WineHaven to pick up another bottle of the Stinger honey wine. Also, we picked up some of that local cheese down the road at Eichen that Sandy had for us when we arrived.

Balsam Lake Lodge - Great views of the lake! Only empty because breakfast diners were in another room.

"I Carried a Watermelon."…read more I expected to see a Swayze-esque instructor performing the Pachanga across the dining room floor during my first visit here years ago, but alas, I was mistaken. This sprawling lodge on the south side of Balsam Lake offers a welcome respite from the summer heat with the same breezy atmosphere of 1963 Kellerman's in the Catskills. If "Dirty Dancing" had been filmed here, Baby would have carried a giant pretzel instead of a watermelon, a minnow-drinking contest would have replaced the talent show, and Lisa Houseman would have worn a "Here, fishy, fishy, fishy" t-shirt along with her beige, iridescent lipstick. Boaters and pontooners arrive to a huge patio stretching the length of the lodge where they can enjoy outdoor seating, a fire pit, and weekend musical entertainment. Lake viewing adds amusement in the form of pirate ships, party boats, giant floating flamingos, and boat parades. Indoors you'll find multiple dining areas, a bar, arcade games, and blurred sightings of "The Jetson's" Rosie making deliveries. The food scene here is also "shore" to float your boat between the Friday cod or perch fish fry, walleye sandwich, and delicious Mahi Mahi. Come back in the morning to delight the kiddos with the colorful Fruity-Pebbles waffles breakfast! While the food here has been consistently good during my visits, they are a bit overpriced, and wait times can take as long as it took Baby to learn the lift. Still, I suspect the mixed ratings are partially due to old Sylvia and Sydney Schumacker opening fake Yelp accounts to post negative reviews, along with stealing wallets over at Kellerman's. If the food and service were really that bad, the restaurant and patio wouldn't be packed all summer. I can't comment on the hotel side as I have never booked a room here. Bye-bye now...gone fishing! I'd choose Thirsty Otter in a heartbeat. It was a quiet Monday at lunch time, it would have been nice to be out on the lakefront patio, but there wasn't service out there. Inside at the bar, most tvs were turned off, to be honestly it barely felt like they were open. Our one wrap took 20 minutes, fries were cold. Ambiance was like zero. Could use some music or something. With such potential near the lake, it's really quite sad.

Perfect place with great restaurants/ cocktail bars and things to do. Not to mention the Rivertown Inn! It's been a few years since we've stayed here and we opted for the Oscar Wilde room. We will be back to stay here again! The others rooms we've stayed at in the past have also been beautiful, but this one takes the cake! Another perk to this place is the breakfast made by their phenomenal vegan chef. I don't eat pork and she whips up an awesome meal that makes me wish she could cook for me daily. I could easily be vegan with her help! The staff or caregivers that help us each time or super helpful and make our stay even better. Thanks again for another visit and we will be back!

Unbelievable! This place is well worth the price. The private bathrooms are spectacular. Between the eucalyptus steam shower with a myriad of water features and the jacuzzi type soaking tub, we could barely tear ourselves away from our personal spa time to go to dinner. We love the fact they have no tv's in the rooms but an awesome speaker/disc system for music of your choice and a refrigerator full of drinks. They had snacks available upon our check in and I would highly recommend the freshly baked chocolate chip cookies for an additional $5 - YUM! The best part of our moring was the delicious breakfast served right to your room. OH My! We loved our breakfast (see picture) and the homemade scones were SO good. We came here to celebrate our 29th Anniversary in February and we weill be back for a summer visit and of course, many more anniversaries. This place made our anniversary special. Thank you Tom and Sandy.

I only need to say one five star thing. THEY SERVE ICE CREAM with breakfast!…read more Well, we've only stayed in five or six bed and breakfasts (mostly in Maine or New Hampshire) but this is (without a doubt) our favorite. The Mansion is beautiful, a real mix of old and new.. so you get history.. but still really nice bathrooms and big bedrooms It's about three blocks further than the other highly rated one in town and well worth the extra travel. We were greeted by our gracious hosts, Tom and Sandy. We made it just in time for the afternoon snack.. you know.. wine, cheese etc... with time to enjoy the large veranda. In fact, we were there for three nights and made extensive use of the veranda.. at breakfast, in the afternoon and in the evening. Tom and Sandy are good about seating you with people that are a good match.. or if you prefer.. alone.. there is plenty of space. You can even have food delivered to your room. We played croquet on the grounds (yes, they have ample parking, gorgeous landscaping, a fountain and a place to play croquet) it was fun, but when my wife kept beating me I decided it was time to try something else. (I grew up in the city, what do I know about croquet?) Back to the breakfast thing.. one day the whole area suffered a power outage so they fired up the grill and cooked us our breakfast. No big deal, it was excellent. We stayed in the Joseph room, but were able to view all except one and they were all very nice. We had a King sized bed (super comfortable) and an oversized bathroom.. a big tub with jets and a shower that I needed the instructions (laminated) to use.. so many sprayers. As we spoke with the other guests.. we were all in agreement that this is a really remarkable Bed and Breakfast. Tom and Sandy's labor of love really shines. A great value.

The let down part was all staff related. The check in (even though I did the "pre-check in" before I got there) took way longer than I expected. Wasn't the biggest deal, except I had just driven for hours and in needed to pee! The breakfast was a huge let down. I don't actually expect great food at a free breakfast in hotels.... But I do expect something! This morning, right around 8am I walked in to find an empty pan that I'm assuming at one time had some kind of meat and possibly a potato? They did have a waffle maker, but I'm not a sugar eater, so didn't want that. There was some muffins etc., but nothing hot available. Looked around, nobody behind the check in desk. A cleaning cart was parked pretty much right in front of the elevator, but no sign of life! There was a door that was open that had a break room or an office area, that's where I found a few employees sitting at a table. I asked if anyone was going to replenish the breakfast and the cleaning lady (assuming from the hallway cart) said to the manager "the breakfast must be empty". The manger quickly walked into the breakfast area, looked at the empty tray and said "it's going to be a while for breakfast". Needless to say, coffee and a hard boiled egg today! Hotel... Not bad. Staff.... Needs improvement!
