My dear mom finally made the decision to place my dad here after caring for him for years. His dementia had gotten to the point that my mom's quality of life was really awful and she was exhausted. Mom did a great job of keeping him safe at home even with stairs. He never had an accident. First night at Brookdale he "fell"and gashed his head. Several days later he "fell" again and broke his hip. This began the most horrific hospital stay where he almost was starved to death and ultimately hospice at home. We were led to believe they were able to handle all levels of dementia. They cannot. If your loved one is still really with it maybe this place would be ok. But otherwise do not send them there. The communication is horrendous, they are woefully understaffed and they do not watch them nor care for them the way you would at home... not even close. We thought he'd be safer, turns out mom was way more capable than a whole facility of "trained" staff. Dad suffered for weeks in hospice not understanding that he couldn't get out of bed with his broken hip. He fought so hard trying the whole time to regain his independence and dignity. But ultimately I think he realized he wasn't going to get better and gave up. He died after a long and extremely sad deterioration. We are heartbroken as it didn't have to be like this. Please keep your parents home with help if you can. I wouldn't wish this nightmare on anyone.

BEWARE BEFORE YOU MOVE YOUR LOVE ONE TO ARDEN COURTS IN PALOS HEIGHTS .....WORST DECISION I EVER…read moreMADE!!!!!!! This was one of the hardest decisions I've ever made as an only child. I had to come to the realization that I can no longer care for my mom. She needed to move into a memory care facility. I needed to find a community that she will be well taken care of and safe. Arden Courts is it. Ingrid was the first person I met at Arden Court. She's very informative and understanding. The front staff are always welcoming and friendly. The caregivers are nice and patient with the residents. The nurses are extremely helpful and will address questions/concerns immediately. The entire staff treats my mom as well my family and friends like we are all family. I'm very happy with my choice in choosing Arden Court..... UPDATE 05/2025 I'm very heartbroken that I left my mom in when things began to look different. My mom has been a resident of Arden Court for approximately 7 months. The last few months there has been significant changes that were not communicated with families. As of May 2025 I moved my mom out immediately due to in unexplained issue and her safety became questionable. Arden Court is not what it has become when I moved her in October 2024. Attached pictures of the unexplained lump my mom received while at Arden Court of Palos Heights Illinois. She was immobile as well as a recipient of a double mastectomy. That "lump" is not her breast. No one contacted me once I moved her out or explained the hematoma she received, which was caused by "blunt force" according to the emergency room doctor. This was unacceptable.

NIGHTMARE AT PORTER PLACE As a nurse for 20 years, I must…read moreadmit that Porter Place is the most poorly ran facility I have ever encountered. I refuse to allow another family to go through what my mother and I experienced at Porter Place without A WARNING. My mother WENT THROUGH HELL and dealing with the staff took up so much of my time and effort as a nurse and her Advocate that I felt as if I worked at the facility. ADMINISTRATORS AND LACK OF OVERSIGHT: The top administrators, the executive director, Yosanne W.; the director of nursing, Kathyrn P.; and the ADON, Charli M. are not committed to providing quality care, nor do they have the experience and knowledge of what that actually looks like. I know this because after numerous complaints on the lack of quality care my mother was receiving, the subpar care continued over a period of months. After I placed a camera into my mother's room, I found out that the lack of care was worse than I thought. The caregivers were not even providing basic care to my mom. They were not cueing or assisting her with her morning ADLs - washing her face or brushing her teeth. Oftentimes she was not receiving her showers or even asked if she wanted one. I was nice enough to label my mother's dresser drawers to make it easy for the staff to help Mom get dressed in the morning. Yet, some caregivers omitted her bra, wig and some days her socks. When I repeatedly mentioned this to the DON, her response to me was, "Well, I have relayed this information to the staff, it is on them to follow through!" Say what?!? You mean to tell me that a person can come here, and get paid for not doing their job? Of course, I received no response. I have also witnessed the caregiver staff walk around with ear pods in their ear, listening to music, talking on the phone, arguing and cursing to whomever is on the phone while working. I have had to tell one young lady to turn her music off as she had it blaring on her phone while trying to help get my mother dressed. HIGH TURNOVER ALERT: The staff turnover rate is extremely high. As a nurse who has managed a facility myself, huge staff turnover is a telltale sign that something is wrong with the administration. My mother lived at Porter Place for 14 months and 90% of the staff has changed multiple times, including the top administrators mentioned above. Yosanne and Kathyrn are new and Charli recently left the facility. This very expensive facility will hire anyone off the street to work as a caregiver, mostly "unqualified and with no experience." In fact, Porter Place does not require their caregivers to be Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) which is ridiculous. Families pay a premium for their loved one's care and they hire high school grads and other young people with no experience and provide them with 3 days of "on computer" training to take care of our loved ones. Dementia/Alzheimer's residents require specialized care from employees who are specifically trained to handle different types of behaviors; and, who are capable of patience and professionalism. Most of the nurses are new LPN grads and PRN or as needed nurses. The few good nurses they had when we first moved in, left. When asked why did they leave, their response was they could not take it anymore. The top administrators' haphazard way of running a facility is bound to run the best employees away. PLEASE BE ADVISED: Porter is very expensive as they have multiple levels of care. If families are paying $8,000 - $10,000 a month, we deserve to have qualified and vetted personnel working with our loved ones. I found out through another nurse that Porter Place doesn't even bother to check references of their newly hired staff. She was hired on the same day as her interview. This is one of the reasons for the huge staff turnover. They will hire anyone who needs a job and when that person finds something better, they quit. LACK OF CONTINUITY: Every morning, my mother had a different caregiver in her room. There is no continuity of care and to make it worse, the regional manager, Nick T. told me it doesn't matter because they have dementia. LEVELS OF CARE OR A HOLE IN YOUR POCKET? Porter will accept your loved one at a lower level of care to get you moved in, and in a few months, they will go up on the level of care claiming that your loved one is requiring more of their staffs' time. They use a point system. The more points the more money and it is all subjective as the ADON or DON decides how many points to give your loved one. It does not mean more staff is on the schedule, only that your loved one requires more attention or redirection. For example, your loved one may have to be told to come and eat dinner 3-4 times as opposed to one time. They will use any excuse to charge more money. The point system is designed to nickel and dime you into the poor house. I will try to continue my review.

Below you will see my previous review of Porter Place before Tamika, Laporsha and Charli left…read more Since their departure, this place has turned to garbage. I loved this place for my mom before. She had exceptional care from so many and all management and staff knew her and me. Now you walk in and it's like night and day. There are still some phenomenal staff who should not go unappreciated (Bre, Porcha, Dell, Mercedes, Alexis, Dawn, Tamika, Mariah, Kiana, Keesha, Aneidra, Jomiece, Brittany, John - spelling could be wrong and I apologize). These people will go above and beyond. As far as the others - it's a paycheck and their behavior shows that. They don't care about the residents or the family members. My Mom was on hospice and her final days there were miserable for her and me. I spent day and night to be with her. The lack of compassion and humanity is overwhelming. The lack of professionalism is mind blowing. "Attitude reflects leadership" and let me tell you from personal experience, it shows! I would never recommend this place to anyone and it's heartbreaking because this place used to be a place of peace for me, knowing my Mom was so well taken care of. It changed. It showed. I hope they learn from this and make the appropriate changes for the resident's sake and their families. Original post...how things changed..... Where do I begin on how incredible this place is. My Mom started to decline and I had to make a tough decision on what to do next. I met with Kelly to go over options and tour the facility and attended a free support group for families at the facility. It was a perfect match from day one with Kelly, Brittany up front (now promoted), and meeting with Tamika during our in home assessment. I cannot say enough about Nurses Bri, Keesha and Aneidra. Porsha is a gold star who is always there; whether on a unit or up front. Dawn up front is my son's favorite person to see and she always has a special treat for him. Tori has gone out of her way to make my Mom comfortable on numerous occasions and Danielle (god love her) always ensures my Mom's room is clean and picked up. Those not named are such as special as the others but I'd be writing all day. If you're looking for a place where staff truly care - this is it. Also, Laporsha - thank you for stepping up into your head role. You're killin it!

It started out to be just a two-week respite period, but upon consulting with people in my life who I hold in high regard, it was recommended to make it permanent. This did not bode well with her, but we proceeded and moved her in July of 2022. Best decision EVER. It took a while for her to acclimate, but within a short period, she adapted and became quite popular with residents and staff. I affectionally call it "the Resort", because if they had a pool, I'd have moved in! The grounds are lovely and well maintained, as is the interior. Clean public restrooms, no odor, well-furnished and esthetically appealing. The dining room is very inviting and well-kempt and staff is very accommodating The staff is personable, caring, attentive and kind. There are a multitude of activities every day and weekly outings outside of the Resort, including dining out, shopping and the casino! My mom had to check her calendar to see if she was "available" for me to visit. They also have a salon for haircuts, styles, etc. as well as offering manicures on a weekly basis. There is transportation available every Tuesday and Thursday for residents to attend medical, dental and eye appointments. They also host events for families a couple times a year (summer picnic and Holiday luncheon) and they're very well attended. I'd be remiss not to mention "Happy Hour" every Friday at 3:30. :-) Green Tree is their pharmacy and can supply all of your loved one's medications pre-portioned, packaged and covered by Medicare. The meds can be self-administered or by the nursing staff, depending on the resident's capability and family preference. The use of Green Tree is not a requirement. ESL also has in-house PT/OT staff and equipment on the premise (also available to Legacy residents). They are wonderful and patient. They want to see the residents be comfortable, strong and thrive and will do all they can to make that happen. The nursing staff is on-point, as I received calls late at night if my mom was having an issue. My mom was hospitalized on January 8, 2026 and diagnosed with Flu A virus. She remained there for 10 days and sent to a skilled nursing facility (SNF), from which she was discharged on February 20. We moved her back to her own apartment at ESL under hospice care. She passed away on March 8 at the age of 90 1/2. Between residents and staff, it was like a parade in her apartment. Everyone was so incredibly supportive, it left me speechless. I have been back a couple of times and plan to do so at least once a month to visit with the friends we made there, both residents and staff. I have and will recommend Evergreen to anyone looking for an assisted living or memory care facility for their loved ones. Thank you ALL for what you do. Susan

During my elderly mother's stay at the Sunrise Senior Living Community in Palos Hills, IL., we encountered repeated instances of neglect, unsanitary conditions, and gross mismanagement. She was found multiple times in the middle of the night unattended -- once placed on a urine-soaked couch with furniture positioned around her, and another time sitting stiffly upright in a chair, without socks or shoes, as if she were a display. When questioned, staff gave conflicting and inadequate explanations. We also witnessed a persistent ant infestation in her room, which staff failed to address despite multiple reports. The situation grew so bad that we had to demand a room change after three weeks of inaction. Even then, the Executive Director initially resisted our request, only to later offer another room at the same rate -- raising serious concerns about honesty and integrity. My mother was confined to a wheelchair for nearly four weeks due to an undiagnosed urinary tract infection -- something the Director of Nursing completely overlooked. Despite visible signs of physical decline, it was our family -- not the staff -- who suggested that she be tested. She tested positive immediately. Within 36 hours of leaving this facility, my mother was walking again. This level of incompetence and indifference is inexcusable. She also sustained an injury that went untreated. When asked about it, the staff simply said "she fell," without offering any further explanation or medical follow-up. The wound worsened over time and scabbed without care. The facility itself is not secure -- I was able to enter after hours on multiple occasions without being stopped, questioned, or asked for ID. This lack of oversight puts all residents at risk. To make matters worse, several of my mother's personal belongings -- including clothing -- were stolen during her time at the facility. Despite repeated requests, these items were never returned, and we've received no accountability or reimbursement to date. Sunrise personnel also stole her mattresses and bedspring. We were forced to file a police report to have this matter addressed. SMH Throughout this ordeal, communication was inconsistent and unprofessional. I requested all contact be conducted via email or certified letter, but staff -- including the Executive Director -- repeatedly disregarded this, continuing to call me directly despite clear boundaries being set. She was actually calling me from 3-4 different phone numbers. Very immature as you can see. We have filed formal complaints with state authorities and law enforcement. I strongly urge families to conduct extensive research and consider this experience before entrusting your loved one to this facility. What we endured has taken a heavy emotional toll -- one no family should ever have to go through. I included a pic of my mom. unattended, laying on a urine saturated couch, restricted by two chars serving as barriers at 12 am. Made a surprise visit and this is where I found her....trust me, you never want to experience anything like this. Came back the following night and found the same.
