We ordered Arancini balls & Bruschetta for an app and we're dissapointed. the Arancini balls came 4, but were so small (the size of 2 toonies put together) and the bruschetta was on extremely small pieces of bread. This place is great, I can't say anything bad about it! I came with a group of friends for dinner and the place was packed. Thankfully we had a reservation and were seated quickly. The waitress let me taste two of the wines so I could choose which to order and then the drinks were flowing. It's such a lively place! I ordered the veal parmesean because I was very hungry and cheese on deep fried meat sounded like the perfect meal. As authentic Italian as you'll get, right from the décor, the menu and the food. Pasta is freshly handmade and pizzas are cooked to order in a brick oven in the kitchen. I have only tried the pizzas and tiramisu at this place. I admit I not the biggest fan of traditional Italian pizzas but the quality and taste of the pizza is here. I really enjoyed my sausage, olive and garlic pizza. The tiramisu isn't the best that I've had but its not bad. I would def. come back to this restaurant if I was in the area. read more

Came here for dinner before a concert nearby. We had made a reservation, which was a good thing, the place was packed. We started with splitting a Caesar salad. It was tasty but nothing special. I had the pollo alla griglia which honestly was awful. It was a dried sliver of chicken (sorry that is not a breast) with thin mushroom sauce, watery veggies and a couple of potatoes. All for the ridiculous price of 18 bucks. Hubby had the pasta special which was shrimp and asparagus pasta. It wasn't bad but like the Caesar salad, nothing special. I don't think I'll be back. Benissimo! My mom loves this restaurant so my brother and I decided to take her for dinner. It is a quaint restaurant on king street with a spacious dining area, homey decor, and an excellent bar. They also have the option to sit outside on the patio. The staff is very friendly and attentive, with prompt bread and water refills. They have a wide selection of Italian cuisine with your pizza and pasta staples. For this trip, my mom got the daily special, my brother got a pasta, and myself the meat lover pizza (I forgot all the names because they were in Italian!). Both pastas were very well done; the cream based sauce on the daily special was rich in flavour and coated the pasta, chicken, and vegetables without being too repetitive. The other pasta was oil based and although lacking in punch, delivered in the nuance of the flavour. Although I was expecting a pizza more akin to those in Italy, the pizza was well cooked and the meats tasted better than those found at your standard pizza joint. I haven't had good Italian cuisine other than this and Corrado's in the Durham region, so give it a shot! read more

I've been wanting to try Avanti for quite a while now. Finally had a chance to check it out. The restaurant itself is very nice. Has a somewhat small and cramped outdoor patio, but at least they have a patio. Was not impressed with the service. The waitress was obviously not happy to be there and it showed. But let's get to the food. Overall the food was pretty good. They start you out with really great fresh crusty bread, with olive oil and balsamic vinegar for dipping. We ordered a pizza and meatball sandwich. If you like the thin crust wood oven style pizza then you'll enjoy this. The meatball sandwich was also good, served again on a large fresh crusty bun. Overall I found the experience lacking in terms of the atmosphere. Again the food was pretty good, but not spectacular. Prices were reasonable as well. For me, there are much better places to go to for Italian food and pizza. But if you're in downtown Oshawa it's a good place to go if you're in the mood for Italian. (Note: I would have preferred to give a 3.5 star rating. The place is better than 3, not quite good enough for 4) read more

We went t to there as soon as we were able to get back to restaurant this year. It was perfect timing for my partner's birthday. This place was on our list since we spot it due to our deserving love for Italian foodWe were not disappointed at all. The food was rich and delicious. I ordered Fettuccine A La Vodka because it sounded interesting and it was one of the best fettuccine I've had. My brother who is on a pasta diet didn't mess with his lasagna and my partner also enjoyed her Fettucini Alfredo meal. The only thing by the time you add a drink your order you'll be right about $50 per person. I don't mind the price but I was left thinking what was so special and unique that I couldn't get somewhere else that's at a lower price point? I struggled to find the differentiator. Anyways we decided afterwards that we'll continue to support them because they are local but only maybe go once a year. Also this was one of the rare Italian restaurant we visited that didn't serve you bread with the meal. I wish we had some good garlic or Parmesan French bread with some seasoned kosher salt and olive oil dipping. That would have maybe tipped them closer to a 5 stars. I had the veal with a side of pasta, flavours were great but the presentation of the food was the only downside. The worst service we have ever experienced. Quoted 25 minutes and waited an hour and 10 minutes. We were told 3 times we were the "next table". A table becomes available so we settled up at the bar and left our bar seats anticipating being sat as we were "next" and they sat 4 OTHER PEOPLE! Crappy service! The waitress wouldn't leave us alone. It was 4 of us that went there for dinner and she would stop by our table every 5 minutes trying to get our order. It seemed as if she was in a rush to get our order, feed us and get us out. Terrible service! She must have come up to our table at least 30 times (NOT KIDDING). The food bland/dull, MINE WAS! I had a salmon dinner. Should have had pasta instead or pizza. My friends' dinners looked good but all 3 of their orders were Pasta and I wasn't in the mood for a carb overdose. I will give this place a try one more time and order their pasta and also will make sure not to sit in the irritating waitress' section. Amazing! We were seated as soon as we walked in and our waitress immediately served us with bread. When she brought it out I figured it would be a little stale but boy was I wrong. It was so soft and fresh. I ordered the chicken parmesan and I was really impressed. The chicken cutlet was so juicy and hit the spot. Especially with the freshly grated cheese. There is no question that Avanti is one of the better restaurants that Oshawa has to offer, and is one of the few places that can bring you downtown in the evening. We went here on a Tuesday evening, which of course was very quiet. Service was quick and attentive, if not particularly skilled. I ordered a Florentine pizza, which had smoked salmon, capers and red onions. It was a little odd that the salmon was cooked, and there was a puddle of oil on the plate, but it really was a very good pizza. The crust was thin, crispy, tasty and freshly made, and there was just the right amount of toppings, which were nicely arranged. My partner had the meat cannelloni, and unfortunately he was kind of disappointed. The meat was overcooked and mushy, with almost no seasoning, and the sauce was bland with an overpowering tomato taste. Also, there is no way anyone can tell me they serve a 6 oz. pour of their wine. It was 4 oz., no doubt, although when I mentioned it to the server, she went to check with the bartender, who said they were 20 oz. glasses, so that's why they looked so small. Uh huh. You know, it sounds like I didn't enjoy my dinner, but really I did. The prices were reasonable, it was a very comfortable location, and the pizza was great. Do I hope they will try a little harder? First visit here on October 20, 2019 - won't be the last! Ate here for daughters birthday as a party of 6. I made telephone reservations the day before and we were seated promptly upon arrival. I really liked this place. Italian food is my fave and I can be a bit of a harsh critic when it comes to my favourite food. Two things I did not like: -the atmosphere. There was no Italian music, and the decor was outdated. You are going for the food, but I like some Italian music with my Italian meal. -The caprese salad was a fake. There were no fresh basil leaves, there was some other kind of lettuce, and the cheese were little balls. I like when I get big slices. For a good real Italian caprese salad (Like you would get in Rome...go to their sister restaurant with the same owners Prego's.) Other than that - service was great! They were good. My boyfriend got a penne pasta with sausage and peppers that was really good. And I got the lasagna, which in my opinion was nothing special. Big piece and very filling. The owners of this restaurant are also affiliated with 2 other local establishments and unfortunately I had to deal with the management of their other location. Worst experience ever. I write this review because if this is how the owners want their managers to deal with clients, everyone needs to know. I got very sick from raw food I was served. And just as terrible as this experience was, after recovering and contacting a manager Mike Green, I was told that, "these things happen". I don't understand how a manager could speak such words to a customer. After getting sick, they were not willing to compensate me for my ruined clothing, dry-cleaning of my winter coat or anything close to that. His solution was to offer me a gift card for drinks. Terrible business sense & service. Thankfully in the end I got my money back for the dinner but this whole experience was dreadful. I enjoy supporting local businesses & my community but I will never ever step foot in Hops, this restaurant or Amici ever again. I always loving eating at Avanti. It's one of my favourite Italian restaurants to dine at. I've had almost everything on the pasta section and a couple of the pizzas. I have sincerely enjoyed every single dish I've had. Last night I had the agnolotti di gamberi and although the shrimp taste was a little strong for me the cream sauce it comes in was so delicious and more than enough to smother the agnolotti in. My friend had the tortellini di bosca and although I'm not generally a mushroom fan, I preferred her dish to mine. I even really enjoyed the woodland mushrooms on their own! I can't wait to go back and have that dish! The prices are reasonable the house wine, both the red and white, are delicious and the free bread with the olive oil and balsamic dips is always fresh and tasty. Service was horrible..waitress didn't bother to come and ask how the table of 8 was doing for drinks...only asked immediately after receiving our meals if we were good and that was it. The kids were fine with their pizza but certainly not something to recommend...the fungi pizza tasted a lot like nothing ( my husband says it was lemon flavoured where I believe it really had no taste at all..maybe milky?). Besides the poor service and very disappointing meals it was freezing! 4 of the 8 of us worn our jackets throughout dinner. Overall it was very disappointing. We would highly recommend you look elsewhere. I will add one more comment as when asked if we were taking the fungi pizza home and my response was "no thanks we did not like it" I was asked why and when I said "there was no flavour" the response was ..."oh"... I would prefer 3.5 stars, but Yelp likes round numbers. My first experience here was very uneventful. So uneventful that I didn't see the appeal or any reason to come back. However my girlfriend really liked it. I've been back four more times, and even brought my mother. As I am writing this, at the sidebar of this page is Shari M.'s entry, whose reviews are atop of my Yelp list. She says the veal, pasta, cosmo, and bruschetta are all top notch, but to me this place's draw about is their oven-baked gourmet pizzas! As a picky eater, my palette tends to go more towards the proteins than the Vitamin C. That's just my fancy way of saying that I like meat and not so much the vegetables. 8-P So I order a meat-topped pizza when I get dragged to Avanti's, and I must say, I'm not really being dragged anymore. I actually crave it from time to time. Yes, men really can change their minds! The atmosphere is visually pleasing, but I always make a point of the music selection in the background. Country music in an authentic Italian restaurant? On at least two occasions, yes. It is likely I will come back to re-review this restaurant in the future, so my 3-star rating should have a north-pointing arrow beside it. I must say, I've tried Avanti a few times throughout the years and each visit has been less impressive. The first time I went, I very much enjoyed my meal and the service and was excited to go back. The next couple times, my excitement diminished. The last time, I decided this restaurant is just not for me. I find the current food bland. I understand the ethos of Italian cooking is to let the beautiful ingredients speak for themselves but I feel like the restaurant relies a little too heavy on the notion. Nothing was seasoned. Even a little fresh garlic would have been welcome but was nowhere to be found. That being said, I can get by the subpar food but the service wasn't very good either. My last experience was when my friend took me there for dinner as a precursor for my bachelorette. It was made clear that we were there to celebrate and it took our waitress fifteen minutes in a dead restaurant to even ask if I wanted a drink. It was basically downhill from there. Maybe I expect too much when I venture to a restaurant but I'm not a huge fan of being ignored for long periods of time. Anyways, Avanti seems to do well, so good for them. If you're looking for the worst customer service known to mankind? Are you looking for a restaurant to make excuses, or even better yet, tell you that they don't believe you? Maybe you're looking for a 'manager' to act super defensive and even blame you for their mistakes? If this is what you want to spend your hard earned money on - then you have found the PERFECT place! The prices for adding things was constantly changing depending on who took the order - when I questioned this (as it varied between $3-11 Per add on - which was always the same add in each time) I was told that I wasn't telling the truth - so I showed previous receipts to prove what I was saying... then they continued being super defensive (when all I wanted was consistency in pricing) and blamed it on staff and said a lot of people were fired but it would be consistent after that. In all fairness - that did actually happen but I ordered today for pickup and the person who answered the phone seemed really distracted - I said I was ordering for pickup and they told me they were full for their reservations for the evening but I could walk-in and take my chances with getting a table?!... or when she was speaking to other people .... and regardless of how concise I was about the order - they still managed to mess it up. When I went to pick up the order, I spoke with same 'manager' as before and explained what happened and that they were so distracted that had I not asked the person to please just give me their undivided attention for a short period of time so that my order could be taken, that I don't know how long the call would've been! The response was again, super defensive and then I was given the 'hostess is new' line... again I just simply brought it to their attention how things went when I called. Got all the way home to find out that my penne con pollo (ordered with extra sauce, mushrooms and sundried tomatoes) didn't have a single piece of chicken in it! Called and spoke with 'Dominic' who claimed that he was the manager (so not really sure what the deal is there because the woman I had spoke with a couple times said she was the manager?) and then told me that there seemed to be an issue every time I went there (except I had only asked to have consistent pricing for my add ons and then this time where the person who answered the phone seemed distracted/preoccupied) - I explained this to him and he told me that even though my penne con POLLO (literally means chicken) didn't have any chicken in it that I should not order from them in the future. I even explained that everything else in the order was great - but somehow them not putting chicken in my meal was 'too much of a hassle' for him to 'deal with'.... oh and then he complained that my order was super difficult when all I did was add extra sauce to each dish and on one penne con pollo to add extra mushrooms and sundries tomatoes... smh. I used to tell everyone about this restaurant and would often make the drive from Pickering to eat there (or pick up) but honestly the food went in the trash after this because I didn't even feel like eating after being treated like this. read more
