About time for a re-review.... Oh Averill Farm... How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. - The farm is family run and truly feels like it. The folks who work there are SO nice and helpful and friendly and kind. There are kiddos and farm pups running around, kind signs offering water for those who need it (in stark contrast to a certain corporate orchard we despise, which does not provide drinking water to patrons and does not allow patrons to bring water in, even for dogs). Averill is the kind of simply humane, thoughtful place that brings joy to my heart. - The farm is beautiful. So beautiful. On a coolish autumn morning, it's uncrowded and you can gaze out into the distance to see tractors mowing in distant fields, outlined against a periwinkle sky, rows and rows of neat trees, all impeccably well kept. Adjacent to the farm market, there's a big, wide field with a generous number of picnic tables placed all around, far enough from one another that you can pretend like you have the field all to yourself. - Farm produce and products are pure goodness. Apples and pears are magnificent, of course: juicy, healthy, not doused with pesticides. Cider donuts are freshly fried, well blotted, and not overly sweet. An apple crumb pie, redolent with butter and still warm at purchase, was world class, not overly sweet. Pear and apple cider are the embodiment of clean, adulterated fruit flavor. It's food I feel good about feeding to my kiddos. - The bathroom is a port-a-potty situation, but the one I used was pretty clean. There are four behind the farm store. - Pricing is fair. - Fellow patrons are civilized and respectful, which makes me so happy. Policies are generous, rules are reasonable -- and as a result, patrons don't feel like they have to claw back something from the business to even out the playing field. At some large, commercial places, you see some patrons pull apple after apple off of trees, take one bite, and then throw them down into the grass to rot (so they feel like their insanely high cost of entry is justified, I speculate). Averill owners and Averill patrons are respectful of one another, making for a truly pleasant visit. If you enjoy a bucolic, relaxing and beautiful apple picking (without the gaudy carnivalesque elements offered by some larger establishments), Averill Farm is an absolute must. read more

Another apple farm my family took me to during my visit and was nice. It was late in the season so not as colorful, but it was really cool to be surrounded by apple trees and check out their store in the middle of it. They had seating outside the building if you just wanted to sit to enjoy view or food, and also on the other side plenty of pumpkins they were selling. Inside had all kinds of goodies they offered, including delicious apples and donuts. They were fresh and had my family loving them. I liked their cider too tasted great. They had soaps I thought smelled nice too pretty cool they made their own and the scent wasn't overpowering. The guy that worked there was very nice and had fun chat with. This was a really nice place to visit for sure and cool place to stop by. read more

Have faith when signs and your GPS send you up the gravel road: you will ultimately emerge into the glow of Averill Farms' cider donuts. This is a small farmstand that has pick-your-own orchards. Fruit in the shop is sold by the bag, so if you're a single person not intending a pie-making binge, get some friends committed to splitting the haul with you. They have quinces! Averill Farm is a fruit orchard and farm market that opened in Washington, Connecticut in 1746. It was founded by the Averill Family after they purchased the land from the Native American Chief Waramaug. It is still owned and operated by the Averill Family: ninth generation Sam & Susan Averill and their tenth generation son Tyson and his wife Jennifer. For several years, the farm was a dairy farm. Today it is mainly known for its 20 acres of fruit orchards. They are open seasonally from August through December. The pick of the crop is their apples, pears, pumpkins, gourds, Indian corn and flowers. In addition to fresh fruit and veggies, Averill Farm also makes fruit pies, honey, jams & jellies, syrups, sweet apple cider, apple cider donuts, hard cider and apple wine. During December, they also sell Christmas trees. My wife and I visited Averill Farm for the first time in October 2019. It's the kind of place that families make annual Autumn pilgrimages to. Their farm store is filled with all sorts of items that you would expect to find at New England farm store in the Autumn. What I had my sights set on was their cider, both sweet cider and hard cider. During the Autumn weekends, Averill Farm is also home to 'Pizza to the People': a local mobile wood-fired pizza oven that happens to be vegetarian and organic. After scanning the menu, my wife and I decided to order the Margherita (white pie with fresh local tomatoes and basil) and the Averill's Pizza (cheddar, apples and walnuts). The Margherita pie was delicious with very fresh tasting tomatoes (although I would technically call this a 'native tomato pie' instead of a 'Margherita'). The real winner was the Averill's Pizza: a perfect combo of local apples with cheddar and walnuts. My wife and I enjoyed our visit to Averill Farm and we look forward to returning. Very convenient drive from where I live. It's 15 minutes away opposed to the half hour it would take to the usual orchard. Similarly priced to other orchards. GPS brought me to the wrong spot, luckily there was signs to direct us. Lots of choices, everything marked clearly. The beautiful weather made it for a nice day out with the family. Went apple picking last weekend at Averill Farm. The main reason why we chose to go to Averill Farm was because we wanted to avoid the crowds at Lyman's Orchards. It was the right call, wasn't crowded at all, we really enjoyed our time there. Apple cider was very good, but unlike everyone else out there, cider donuts just don't do it for me (that's not a knock on Averill Farm, I just don't like cider donuts anywhere). Great experience at Averill Farm, would recommend it to anyone looking for a place to go apple picking that isn't crawling with people. read more

A wonderful place to take your grandchildren to pick apples. The orchard is nicely laid out with specific trees grouped together. We were met by a greeter who explained the apple picking process (don't climb the trees :)) ). They operate a farm stand with a selection on products from the area. Reasonable prices although you will find cheaper prices in the supermarket but I prefer the fun of picking your own. And their apples are delicious. read more

I am from the area and have been going to Averill Farm for many, many years now. It is truly a family run farm that has been passed down 10 generations (now in its 11th generation), since 1750. Not once have they sold off part of their acreage to developers or "sold out" to a commercial company, they kept it small, in the family, and it is a well-run, rustic farm complete with charm, authenticity, and quality produce. I love coming here whenever I go home. The apples are some of the best I have ever had, and the same can be said for the cider donuts. Plus, it is very dog and kid friendly! You can also get other locally grown goodies like butternut squash, pumpkins, gourds, and garlic. Averill Farm, don't ever change. read more

Amazing orchard! It's so organized. We bought 3 different types of apples that we picked ourselves from the gorgeous trees. We had delicious apple cider and bought apple cider donuts home with us. Best orchard out of all we've been to in ct. Not too busy, nice and flat for walking with kids and strollers, apples are low to the ground and easy to pick, cider donuts and wood-fired pizza are delicious. views are Beautiful, as is the drive there. This is a great spot to go apple picking. I went on a Saturday in September and despite there being plenty of people milling around, it didn't feel crowded at all. All apples are $2 a pound, with the exception of Macoun's for $2.50. If you're feeling hungry, on weekends they have a brick oven pizza churning out thin crust pies! I didn't try one, but they looked delicious. I did, however, indulge in a few cinnamon sugar donuts. YUM! I've heard that around Christmas time you can also cut down your own tree and buy beautiful, inexpensive wreaths here. read more

This is the best apple picking in the area. It's such a beautiful farm with really amazing trees and friendly staff. The apple cider donuts - oh my! I don't even really like donuts but these donuts are so good. We drive from Brooklyn and make it a full day in CT. This is the real deal CT experience driving past farms that have sheep and donkeys! Apple picking at Averill Farms and a walk in the woods at Bee Brook is the perfect city escape. Worth the drive. Many of the apple orchards closer to the city just don't have the charm of Averill Farms. read more

Unfortunately for my family, the overall beauty of the grounds was overshadowed by the staff members with whom we interacted. We are at the height of apple picking season, and we were shocked two find a mere two porta potties for the crowd that was there that day. I have a little one and he started having a stomach issue as soon as we arrived (I know you parents out there have been through this!)- by the time we arrived in the afternoon the porta potties were a disaster (beyond filthy, very long lines) and we could not both fit inside. The handicap bathroom, which was in a location not easily accessible by a handicap person, was locked. I walked inside the little store area and asked a staff member if we could possibly get access - he looked at me, turned and walked away without saying one word. His reaction was so strange I replayed our interaction several times over in my mind to figure out what I had missed but I didn't come up with anything. I grabbed my husband and we asked a second staff member - believe me, we were very nice about it, in fact I would go so far as to say I begged because my little one was in so much pain at this point. The second staff member smirked and said in a very nasty way that only handicap people could use the facility, there were absolutely no exceptions, and he couldn't just make an exception because we had a kid because then every kid would ask. He then turned on his heel and walked away from us. Regardless of his so called logic and lack of sensitivity, his attitude was uncalled for and unprofessional. We stayed to pick a few apples because we were meeting people and my little one was excited to see them, but the apples were covered with white gook and quite tasteless (I'm not criticizing the apples because of how we were treated, they really weren't tasty). No, I will never, ever go back to Averill Farm. read more
