I stopped in the first entrance which was not correct; it's on the Locust road entrance. For a small basket, it was $15. Parking was ample and NBC news was even there the day I went. There was a booth and friendly people working there. The field was large. I went the first week it opened and there were plenty of strawberries. The strawberries were so good, almost like candy. It was super fresh; I don't want to buy strawberries from a grocery store anymore! The kids enjoyed picking them and so did I. Definitely worth a visit!

They're located in the back parking lot of the Litchfield Center School, and if the parking lot is full there is street parking on the school side of the street. Consistent vendors include Berry Ledges Apiary, March Farms, Twin Pines Farm, and Wave Hill Breads, but there is a variety of vendors each week. Following them on Facebook or checking the website will provide a list of who is expected each week and what they're offering. It is dog friendly, although it is on asphalt so take care to give little paws a break.

The folks who work there are SO nice and helpful and friendly and kind. There are kiddos and farm pups running around, kind signs offering water for those who need it (in stark contrast to a certain corporate orchard we despise, which does not provide drinking water to patrons and does not allow patrons to bring water in, even for dogs). Averill is the kind of simply humane, thoughtful place that brings joy to my heart. - The farm is beautiful. So beautiful. On a coolish autumn morning, it's uncrowded and you can gaze out into the distance to see tractors mowing in distant fields, outlined against a periwinkle sky, rows and rows of neat trees, all impeccably well kept. Adjacent to the farm market, there's a big, wide field with a generous number of picnic tables placed all around, far enough from one another that you can pretend like you have the field all to yourself. - Farm produce and products are pure goodness. Apples and pears are magnificent, of course: juicy, healthy, not doused with pesticides. Cider donuts are freshly fried, well blotted, and not overly sweet. An apple crumb pie, redolent with butter and still warm at purchase, was world class, not overly sweet. Pear and apple cider are the embodiment of clean, adulterated fruit flavor. It's food I feel good about feeding to my kiddos. - The bathroom is a port-a-potty situation, but the one I used was pretty clean. There are four behind the farm store. - Pricing is fair. - Fellow patrons are civilized and respectful, which makes me so happy. Policies are generous, rules are reasonable -- and as a result, patrons don't feel like they have to claw back something from the business to even out the playing field. At some large, commercial places, you see some patrons pull apple after apple off of trees, take one bite, and then throw them down into the grass to rot (so they feel like their insanely high cost of entry is justified, I speculate). Averill owners and Averill patrons are respectful of one another, making for a truly pleasant visit. If you enjoy a bucolic, relaxing and beautiful apple picking (without the gaudy carnivalesque elements offered by some larger establishments), Averill Farm is an absolute must.

We picked up 2 ears of corn to have for dinner tonight, and let me tell you -they were terrific. Without exaggeration, some of the best corn I have ever tasted. Ten times better than the scrawny and tasteless ears I got from Rosedale Farms just a few days ago. The corn was quite large, and every perfect kernel was plump and bursting with flavor. The Bantam Farmers Market is gem! It's not large -- maybe a dozen or so vendors -- but the…read moreselection of fresh farm foods is quite remarkable. So many great looking red tomatoes with carrots, yummy arugula, lettuce, just-picked corn, hand-made cheeses, a huge variety of peppers -- and add in pretty flowers, cheeses, soaps and even a tarot reading! Most vendors operate under a covered shed which protects against bad weather, and the vibe here is friendly and upbeat. It feels good to be supplementing your groceries with this fresh foods, most of them grown in area farms. There's also a food truck parked here and picnic tables underneath the shed if you're hungry (there is a homemade pizza stand, too). The market operates on Fridays from 3-6 p.m. up to the end of September. We highly recommend stopping by if you're in the neighborhood.
