Hidden fees and upcharged insurance policies. There isn't really another option but this was my experience unfortunately.

By far the worst experience I've had in renting a car. I am a business member through Avis and was constantly receiving notifications and emails about a free upgrade to my reservation. When I called the Joplin location at least a month prior to my trip to inquire about the upgrade I was told they don't do that. I politely explained that I had received countless emails and notifications about the upgrade and again was met with, "yeah, we don't do that." A couple of days before my rental pick up date, I popped in at the Joplin Airport location to look at the rental to see how much room I was going to have in the vehicle since there were 6 of us traveling. Cheryl, the manager, informed me that the Joplin Airport was closing this week due to construction and hinted at the fact that they would have to stay late for my rental pick up on Friday at 6 PM. I told her I could probably work it in my schedule to come pick up the rental car early on Friday if it helped them out. She said she would appreciate that. I did ask again about an upgrade because of the emails o had received and then she said she could get me in a Ford Expedition for an extra $50/day. I declined. Fast forward to Friday, July 30, 2021. I pick up my rental around 3:30 PM. I again, ask about upgrade and the lady working told me even if they could they had no bigger vehicles than what I was renting because the Springfield Avis came and picked up 2 bigger SUV's earlier that day. I get to the car, I have my kids with me and I was in disbelief how gross the car was. I pull the vehicle up and get out and inform the girl working that the car wasn't clean. She said if I would like to wait, they would clean it for me. I didn't think it was bad enough to be cleaned and I was on a time crunch considering I moved things around in my schedule to convenience them so they could leave early. I just figured my car would be clean. When I got home to load up my luggage that's when I saw how bad it really was. This car had no been cleaned at all. Previous renters had left things in the vehicle with their personal information that was now in my possession. My husband had to clean the inside of the car before we could ever load our luggage to leave town. I contacted them the next day to let them know how disappointed I was and asked what they would do to remedy the situation. I was then told there was nothing they could do and to contact Cheryl, the manager, on Monday. Mind you, I'm on vacation with my family, so this whole fiasco is taking away from my time with them. I called Tuesday. Cheryl acted as if I was over reacting and said she was sorry and that they could've swapped the vehicle out for a different one. I explained to her that the lady on Friday told me they had no other vehicles, so that wouldn't have been possible. I asked if I could make a formal complaint with their parent company out of Springfield which is Bobs Rentals and said they don't have that information to give out. I've contacted that office in Springfield, waiting to hear back. I also emailed Cheryl pictures of what the rental looked like when I received it. We found dog food, dog treats, leftover food stuck between seats and liquids that had been dried up all over the seats. It's by far the worst rental experience I've ever had and I will never rent from Avis again. By far the worst customer service. Just beware! Oh and through all this documentation, they gave me 2 $25 vouchers that I'll never use because I won't do business with them again. read more

This was a horrible experience from the moment we encountered Cheryl at the airport location. I was helping my mother rent a vehicle, as my father passed away and we had things we needed to get done. We reserved a midsize vehicle on the phone with Avis but when we arrived, Cheryl kept trying to insist on us renting a 2 door, pea green Dodge Charger. She even got up from her desk and wanted me to come outside and look at the vehicle. She was pushing that car on us so much it made me feel very uncomfortable. We then went on to try to proceed with securing the car that we thought we had booked on the phone. For some reason, Cheryl said she could not "verify" my drivers license and after trying to get through that process, we gave her my 74 year old mother's license. Oddly enough, Cheryl supposedly could not "verify" my mother's information, either. We had to leave and drive back to our house and pick up more forms of ID. We said it would take an hour to get that and be back, and she PROMISED she was keeping our car we had reserved. Big surprise, we got back to Avis and Cheryl had rented out our car in the 50 minutes we were gone. We were left with a standard size 4 door vehicle, one that my poor mom strained to get in and out of. Mom had open heart surgery this year and this added stress was a lot on her, physically and mentally. When we returned the vehicle, we did not have the mileage. Cheryl said she needed the mileage, and I told her she could certainly go retrieve the mileage, as she had hopped out from behind her desk briskly and uninvited, to try to push the 2 door sports car on my Mom. When I told her she could certainly get that for us, she said she would not give us a receipt without it. There was nothing about this woman that I trusted so we were not leaving without a receipt. She was condescending and lied to my mom about holding the car that she had reserved. Cheryl was unable (and unwilling) to explain to us why our major credit cards and drivers licenses were not sufficient to rent the car from Avis. We have rented dozens of cars throughout the years and we will NEVER use this company again. I cannot imagine why a company would have an employee with the attitude that Cheryl had. All we can conclude is Joplin is a very small town, but it is a town filled with lovely and helpful people. Cheryl is certainly the exception. Do not rent from this location. Hertz is also at the airport, check them out first. read more

The employee came in and was immediately snooty. Before I even approached the desk, she told me that she needed time and then I was told that due to a soft credit check, they couldn't rent to me nor refund me the $210. read more

Their website stated that you can split the payment, it does not state at time of return like we were told at the time of picking up the rental. So I had to go and help out my family with a rental. OK that is fine. We process the rental an I was told by employee 85200 that at the time of return we can change the payment and my family could use his card to pay for the rental. Well when we went to drop off the rental, the Employee behind the counter "Lauren, the Manager of the largest Avis in this area" told me that we could not do that, he knows "all the policies and that is not allowed". I do not understand why it matters who pays for the rental, as long as they have valid proof it is their card??? It does not. This is the first time we have used Avis and will be the last. Ok so I needed a car in Joplin on the weekend. That left me few choices basically it was the airport car rentals or nothing. I chose avis and was meet with very good service. Rollie, was very nice and helpful, even chased after me to make sure my discount was right. So, I thought I was in for a tough choice next time I rented a car on Joplin. I normally use enterprise. But I returned the car 1 hour and 1 minute later than I had rented it so they charged me for a whole day. Now this may be the norm at your rental place but I have never been charged an extra day at enterprise. Just saying....dont rent from Avis. Enterprise on Ridge Line Rd....way better service. read more

Car reeked of cigarette smoke. Customer Service is awful. Accidently left item in back seat of car, and while I fully understand the company is not liable for lost items, it is not as though items are untraceable. Their service agents were not helpful and had a very dismissive attitude, as did higher management. Will not be using AVIS in the future, and would not recommend their service to anyone. read more
