I don't know where to start. If I could give a minus one star I would. We picked up our car at the Portland Maine airport Avis location. We were told that the rental agreement and all paperwork is emailed to us. I did not get an email so I called the next day. However, you can't get through to the local Avis location. So you speak to someone who is God knows where. And they don't really care. What's up with you or what your issue is. I spoke to Miss Williams. She told me it would take 3 to 5 days to request the paperwork. I spoke to her supervisor. He said that the policy on whether you get a paper copy varies from location to location. I asked to speak to his supervisor. He said he would have someone call me today. Of course I did not hear from anyone. I reached out via email and got a customer service person who responded to my email and now Shawanda says it'll take 5 to 7 days to get my rental agreement. I can get something from Amazon delivered to my home in two hours. But no one can scan a piece of paper and send it via email in under seven days? I just don't believe this. If it's true it's crazy and a terrible business model. however I just can't believe that no one can call the local Avis location and ask them to upload a copy of my rental agreement. There is a local phone number but it rings at a National location. And when I asked for them to transfer me to the local office, they say they can't. it sounds like they should've given me a paper copy of, but alas, I believed the person who is assisting us. I've also tried to reach out to the National Avis email and when I typed in all the information and click send it said something went wrong. try again later. I strongly urge you not to rent a car through Avis. You're paying top dollar for service that is subpar. read more

Rented Avis car from Boston-Logan airport with vibration that shook steering wheel, floor and dash above 60 MPH when driving to Portland, Maine. This was not evident in Boston as speeds were below 55 MPH. Called customer service near Portland for exchange. Phone contact unable to verify my location by giving them rest area name or I-95 mile marker/exit location. Phone contact stated all was needed for exchange at Portland (PWM) was text sent to me. Showing text at PWM exchange counter (17SEP25/1:17PM) insufficient, as attendant (young thin tall man) asked for rental agreement number, so showed e-mail of rental confirmation, yet still attendant unable to find my information even after I provided driver's license and keys to current vehicle. At this point I raise my voice in frustration, when I noticed bearded man behind counter call out to man standing in back of counter. My apology to the young thin tall man for raising my voice. The summoned man (leader/manager? that looks like "Sheldon Cooper" character form "Big Bang Theory" show) came and shouted he was there to protect his employee, and in very condescending way loudly stated he would not engage me. Leader/manager continued to ignore me and loudly state he would not engage when I explained information provided. Leader/manager stated he was not concerned with whatever Avis customer assistant told me on phone. Had to resort to find a piece of paper given at Boston counter showing car location, which had same 4xxxxxxx3 agreement number written on it. This 4xxxxxxx3 number was shown to first attendant in text and e-mail form, yet required a hand written piece of paper be shown to identify rental agreement. read more

I will never rent from Avis again. I was told if I brought my car back a day early I could get the extra hundred dollars a day back. I brought it more than 24 hours in advance. I'm not only told I would not be given or credited that amount but I couldn't get the car back. I ask for a manager, this guy Jens told me there was no manager on duty but I could wait 15 minutes for that person . Actually what he was doing (he's right outside and I see him) was smoking a cigarette and never went and asked for a manager so he was dishonest with me as well. He was the rudest person I've ever dealt with at any rental car counter and I travel for a living. If Avis employs people like that, I'm not ever using Avis again. He just walked to the other side of the counter to avoid me and said "I don't have to tell you anything." Then when I call customer service from there to complain, the guy keeps quoting me to read the contract. No care about this guys rudeness. One thing to add, my company has a major contract with Avis. Bottom Line: An intimate Avis experience; no electronic board for Avis Preferred. After my flight into PWM got cancelled and rebooked for about 14 hours later I was so incredibly nervous that Avis was going to give away our rental car. So my husband and I called Avis at the airport to make sure they'd keep our car but they never picked up the phone the three or four times we called. Long story short, we instant messaged Avis over their website and learned that this location would guarantee cars for up to 24 hours from the reservation time. Phew, I was so thankful when we finally got to the Avis counter and they had a car for us. About that counter, yes, Avis has one. I rent from Avis monthly-ish and I can't recall the last time I actually had to get in line at the counter to get keys. Typically my name and spot number is on the electronic board and I go right to the car. Normally I have no problems here. Today I was met with Quinn at the counter who does not know company policy. I have rented over 100 cars here and am well aware of the policy that states to use a debit card you must have proof of return travel. I have proof of return travel. I showed Quinn the rental policy from Avis website for the location of Portland. He still denied me the rental. I asked him to show me the policy where it states I cannot rent the car. He said he didn't have it and was not able to. I asked to speak to a supervisor and was denied. This caused me a massive inconvenience and find it unnaceptable. Worst Avis experience to date. I was given a car that had filthy seats and the check tire pressure sensor light on. I noticed the light on as I was pulling out of the airport so they must've noticed it too.. they just chose to ignore it. I had to take the time out of my day the following day, a Sunday, to find a tire place to have the tires checked and air filled. The First night in the hotel I had an exorbitant charge from them.. called the general number and they said it was a standard $250 additional charge that would drop on return. On return, they had yet another creative wrong total which the garage attendant said was because I was pre charged for gas despite my saying I would bring it back full. He noted the full tank and sent me back to the desk. Young kid was struggling to fix and said there was no manager on site when I asked because he clearly needed help. In the mean time, another customer arrived who dropped off and was back at the desk for an exorbitant charge. He was next to me so I told him I too was dealing with wrong charges. The employee helping him SHUSHED me and waived his hands in my direction meaning for me to shut up. Told again no manager available. I've never had a bad Avis experience and this was outrageous. I have a handicap and when I was returning the vehicle to the lot, one the Avis Agent was very unkind to me. The signage was not very clear as to where to leave the vehicle. I pulled the vehicle to the closet vehicle in front of me. The Avis Agent started to yell at me that I can't leave the vehicle at that spot while I removing my bags to catch my flight. His tone and attitude seeing my handicap was extremely distasteful and unacceptable! Found wanting, disappointed, bewildered and dissatisfied. Feelings that one would not expect to feel after an occurrence with a company such as Avis, right? I mean, just take a look at what they say they're all about in their "Missions and Values" section of their beautiful website. Flashy corporate words like "Integrity", "Loyalty" and "Respect". Apparently, they're just that...words...placed there to make the shareholders feel great about their investments as they head down page for more important words like "growth and profitability". After an amazing long weekend of visiting family in the beautiful sticks of Maine, my family of six packed up our rented minivan bright and early Monday morning to catch a connecting flight in Portland, ME...headed to JFK and eventually home to Utah. We had a long day ahead of us...or so we thought. We had no idea. Post hugs and kisses, we started the basically new Chrysler Pacifica to find that shifting from "park" to "drive" was not an option. Being somewhat mechanically inclined, we Googled everything we could think of to try and some sort of trick to get the electronic transmission to switch gears...to no avail. Beginning to panic, I called Avis's "roadside assistance" and learned that...not only was the nearest Avis location an hour in the wrong direction, in Bangor, but that the tow truck they would send could only carry myself and one additional passenger! What I was to do with the remaining members of my stranded family was my problem. Fortunately for me, the family I was visiting volunteered to follow the tow vehicle up to Bangor with my poor, confused kids. An hour later, with no word from "Roadside Assistance", we determined that catching our connecting flight (of which we originally paid additional for, to save drive time no less) was out of the question and alternative flight options home needed to be considered. Keeping my cool, I was positive that a reputable company such as Avis had to have an entire department dedicated to taking care of unfortunate folks in my situation. A situation in which, through absolutely no fault of my own and entirely due to a default in my provided rental vehicle, found me in need of travel arrangements to get home. Yeah right. A 30 minute phone call with "Customer Service" informed me that no such assistance was provided, nor available...but they'd see what they could do to compensate me via a day off my rental agreement. Frustrated, yet still functional, I took it on myself to procure $1800 worth of one-way airfare out of Boston (the very airport I paid more for, originally, to avoid) that evening to get us home. Fortunately (there's that word again), after a full day of driving, help from family, transferring luggage, car seats, strollers and wagons and a very helpful service agent in Bangor, ME, we were able to make it across three states and catch our very late flight home. Here's my concern: What if I hadn't been so fortunate? What if I'd not had the options that I'm so "fortunate" to have? What if I'd saved for years for this trip, wasn't with family that could help and was stranded...what then? What sort of integrity, loyalty and respect would you have shown for me, when I missed my flight and couldn't afford to get my family home? Shame on you, Avis. You advertise that you're better than this. I'm sure you tell your employees and shareholders that you're better than this. Put some action and effort behind your thoughtfully written mission statement. Congratulations on your record revenue of $2.3 billion dollars last QUARTER though. read more

Cars are old at this Avis. I went through 4 rental cars in 10 days First car they gave me a mid sized car that smelled like pot. (I reserved a full size) It was past midnight so I just took a the car and returned it the next day. Second car had a slow leak tire that hd to be filled daily. The rear window had a note about the tire but they still rented it to me. The car also didn't have a full tank. 3rd car just died on me and their road side sucks. I would like to start by stating I love Avis and have been a preferred member for several years. I am disappointed by how a desk agent by the name of Brian treated me. He tried to get me to pay for an upgrade and when I refused he slammed the keys on the counter. He still charged me for the upgrade and when returned and asked him about it a week later he claimed he would ask his manager to make the charge correction but it never happened. I rented a car at Boston Logan airport that was the worst car I have ever rented. I drove up to Portland, ME and by the time I had made that 2-hour drive I was majorly upset that I had got such a piece of junk. It was about 7:00 PM when I arrived in Portland and I decided to go directly to the airport to see what I could do so that I would not spend my full week angry about the rent a wreck. I pulled into the Avis log and went inside to the counter. I explained the situation to the young man behind the counter and he looked up the vehicle I had and immediately stated that he understood and asked me if I wanted to swap it out for a minivan. I took him up on the offer and he had me back and on the road quickly and was so nice and easy to work with. If I could give this location zero stars I would. This AVIS location does not care about customer service. My experience renting from them was not great. After asking if the Small SUV they assigned to me had AWD/4WD the woman checking me out verbally confirmed it was. In actuality she had given me a 2WD vehicle. This vehicle was not capable of driving in winter conditions in Maine. When I called roadside service to help tow the vehicle out of a road it could not get out of they called this location to verify details. The location told the roadside service rep that I did not specify that I needed a AWD/4WD vehicle and that it was up to me to figure out how to get their vehicle back on the main road. I was not able to drive this vehicle for half the time I had it rented. Not one representative offered an apology or discount on the situation. I have the option to rent from AVIS/Budget from the PWM every month for days/weeks at a time but I will do everything I can to not use this branch. read more

Because of a mistake the agent on the phone made--they took my reservation, I was told that they'd take my debit card, but they wouldn't--I ended up driving 2.5 hours to this Avis location only to be turned away. Customer service was awful. Everybody admitted that I had a problem, nobody was willing/able to help. The manager at the stand said there was nothing she could do. The person at the other end of their customer help line told me "there was nothing anybody in the whole company could do. I could transfer you to the CEO right now and he couldn't help you." I finally called back and got a sympathetic customer service guy, and the best he could do was tell me that somebody who had the power to help me would be getting back to me within 24 hours. So my vacation is ruined because of a mistake *they* made. I drove 5 hours for nothing, I don't have the van I was planning on, and I apparently have no recourse. None of the people I talked to had the ability/willingness to help when things went wrong. The single most frustrating customer service experience of my life. If you pick Avis, pray that everything goes exactly as planned because apparently "nobody in the company" can help you if it doesn't. read more

Absolutely the best rental car experience of my entire life. I have lived in Paris and Italy and had to rent cars for months at a time, but in Portland Maine, I discovered a true gem of a human being, a person who understands and doesn't group every complaint together with the last and is willing to find solutions. We had an issue with the fact that we don't have a credit card, but were called for a last minute interview in NYC. We knew that our car wouldn't be the safest or most dependable, so opted to rent. Unfortunately upon arriving to pick up our car at Enterprise, we were told that because we did not have a major credit card that we were 'out of luck'. We started to drive ourselves while I phoned frantically everywhere I could until we spoke with Charleton at Budget/Avis at the Portland Jetport. Not only was he professional, discreet and completely took over the situation with ease and giving us peace of mind that we would be able to make it, he also provided us with the best rate and solutions. I that I had been quoted and we safely got to our interview with confidence and peace of mind. We could never thank Charleton for not only helping us in a way that gave us peace of mind, even on the phone to inquire, he picked up and put us at ease right away by saying, "just come on by, we'll make sure you get there' and honestly, we owe it to him if we get this job. I rent cars weekly from Avis all around the US and the service I receive at the Portland, ME location is by far the best! I flew in late on a Thursday night before a huge snowstorm and Erin was there waiting late for the delayed flights. She was pleasant and offered me a more appropriate car for the huge snow storm that was about to hit. A few months later I was in Portland again for a long weekend, and there was Erin again when I landed late; she remembered me and again was a pleasure to work with. Like i mentioned, this type of service is not always there at the AVIS airport locations, but it is at PWM. Thanks Erin and the rest of the AVIS crew, I'll rent from you anytime! read more
