While it may be cheaper than renting at LAX, the customer service is poor, with little warmth and repeated attempts to add unnecessary charges. At drop-off, I was told the car was dirty and would require a $125 cleaning fee. When I pushed back, the fee was suddenly reduced to $50. After I took photos and pointed out that the car was not excessively dirty, the charge was dropped entirely. The experience made it clear they were trying to squeeze out as much money as possible. I've been to this location twice this summer. The first time, the woman at the counter was lovely and the process was friendly and efficient. However, last weekend I was very disappointed in the customer service. As soon as I got there, the man at the counter told me to wait outside. He proceeded to make me wait outside in the hot sun for at least an hour (even though there was plenty of room inside to wait comfortably with the other customers). After waiting a long time, they didn't end up having the car I requested so I canceled my booking. There were several customers that day and I understand they were probably short staffed. I just hope they work on offering a more welcoming experience. read more

These guys are crooks . They're trying to charge me for smoke damages to the car saying that it smelled like smoke and there's ashes. Funny thing is I don't smoke and neither does my wife or my two kids that was with us going to Disneyland. To me this is very disturbing the fact that they would actually make up something and send pictures of no ashes is very disturbing. Please do not rent from here. They're trying to charge me $450 that they just took off my card, I had to call them and then they gave me a letter afterwards telling me why they took $450. Now I'm disputing it. FYI, a lot of these reviews seem to be for the wrong location. This listing (and my review) is for the Avis in Culver City, NOT the one at the airport. What I can say about this facility: it offered what I needed. I paid to rent a car, and they gave me a car. Wait time was minimal. I stopped by and there was no line, and my car was waiting outside for me. I was satisfied with the model of the car. I believe it even had a backup camera in it - the type of conveniences you can expect from a rental place. Car could've been better cleaned. Check the photos - it was a bit grimy. When I entered the car, it had a weird smell. I thought it was the smell of cleaning chemicals. Nope. Two days later, I found the source - in the storage thing between the front two seats, I pulled out a canister of weed! I am not anti-weed, but I also don't smoke it, and I hate the smell. The fact that the car rental people left weed from the previous owner in the car is not ideal - what if I had driven somewhere where it was illegal?? I ended up giving the weed back to the dealership in case the previous renter wanted it back. To add on to the lack of proper care on the car, I received a tire pressure warning only a day after I'd picked up the car. This concerned me because I was about to head on a long trip. I had to take time out of my day to drive back to the Avis place and the guy working there was basically like "well, go fill it up then". To his credit, when I protested saying it should've been taken care of before, he closed up the shop to lead me to a place to fill up the tire. The first couple of places we stopped, the air machines were broken. He eventually led me to an automotive repair facility - a place I would've been intimidated to go on my own with a rental car, for fear they would've tried to charge me for adjustments to a car that was not my own. Luckily, the people working at the automotive place were incredibly nice and offered to check all of the tires for free. Not only was the one tire under-filled (I believe ~30 psi when it should be 36), but the other three tires were over-filled (~40 psi.) It made me worry about how well-maintained the rest of the car was. I received no compensation for having to take an hour out of my day to correct this issue with the car that should have been resolved prior to my picking it up. That having been said, the rest of my rental went well. I had no other issues with maintenance. I returned the car, and incurred no further charges. Overall, I got what I needed out of my rental, albeit with a few hiccups. I would rent from this facility again if it offered the best price; otherwise, I would go with the nearby Hertz dealership. read more

Would prefer to give them a zero. The lady behind the counter is straight out rude and has no customer service what so ever, I believe her name is LaLa. They have a habit of calling people either the day of or the day before to tell you that they cant accommodate your reservation because they were over booked even though your reservation was booked 6 months in advance. The first time they did this to me, I still showed up and they told me that the 8 compact cars sitting in their lot needed maintenance. Second time they did this to me, the lady told me that "it wasn't her f'n problem and to call corporate". I believe since they are independent they look for reservations that have a cheap rate and cancel them out so they can accommodate someone else with a higher rate. Will be contacting corporate to make sure this location is audited. Hopefully they get shut down. read more

Reservations made and prepaid in France, when we went to pick up the car; the employee was extremely rude, didn't have a car, and acted like he didn't care at all, didn't help us at all, told us to call Customer Service; didn't offer to check other branches to see if they had an available car; didn't offer to transfer the reservation to LAX where they did have cars available, but also did not accept the reservation that was made and prepaid in France; didn't offer to refund as they didn't have cars availble; what amazes me the most is to see how can any company in this planet hire such a rude individual, a guy with no apparent any idea of how to work or treat humans. He wanted to force us to take a much higher rental; of course we didn't as we were going to travel long ways to the national parks, and with a gas guzzler, it would be insane, with today gas prices. This company and its employees at this location are the worst I've ever had the displeasure of dealing with! First, it took over an hour in line to get our rental car even though we had a confirmed reservation. Next, while waiting in line, employees were sitting around chatting while literally over a hundred people were waiting! Then, they give us a beat up Mazda 3 with bumper damage and dents all over it. The very next day we discover a giant bubble in the tire! We call at 7:30 pm for roadside assistance, at this time 12:06 am they still have not arrived! Poor customer service! Poor roadside assistance! If I could give them a negative star rating I would! Don't rent from this location or this company! Run to Enterprise or any of the other brands! I don't know how they are still in business. Beware! Update, after calling Carmesha the "customer service rep" at 12:37 am because my replacement car never arrived, she put me on hold and never came back! Way to go Avis! Ahhh, the saga continues! So at 2:00 am I get a call from Avis explaining what happened and why they are so incompetent. I arrange with Carmesha to have a new car delivered at 8:30 this morning so I could get a few hours of sleep before I started my day. Don't be mislead by Avis and their rates. I just cancel a reservation for Boston Logan Airport and got hit with a $50.00 cancelation fee. The cancelation was two days prior to pickup which was not a penalty . The agent on the phone said the fee was spelled out in the contract agreement. Question , have you ever read any of these contracts? Most people haven't and Avis knows this . In turn they can stick you with a $50.00 cancelation fee. Never again will I rent from Avis. I rented a car from Dwight on Sunday, April 18th The rental was for 3 weeks due to return the vehicle on Sunday, May 9th by 12 pm. The pickup time was scheduled for 11 am. When I arrived there was a line with about 4 people in line. The couple ahead of me had been there since 9:30. Dwight came out and said he was doing the best he could and he would be with us as soon as possible. We've waited over an hour to get our vehicle! When we attempted to return the car on May 9th at 11 am the facility was closed. No drop box. The sign on the door said they were closed on Sunday. They were open on Sunday 3 weeks before! I called the Avis number on the contract and they said, "that location is closed on Sunday's", I advised that I had a rental agreement that clearly stated I was to return the vehicle to this location on Sunday, May 9th by noon! I had a flight to make. Avis advised that I could return the vehicle to the airport location. I was charged a $50 one way fee. The desk associate advised me to contact Avis for a refund (I have received a refund). I called Dwight on Monday. He said, and I quote, "I'm closed on Sunday's now, could someone else bring the car back?" I told him about the fee and let him know the car was at the airport , he said Avis would refund my Money. No apology, no explanation. I suggested that he might have contacted customers who had an open rental to let them know to return the car to a different location, as he was NOW closing on Sunday's. Completely unacceptable from start to finish. I will rent from Avis again, but I will not rent from Dwight's location and I will advise my friends & family to avoid this location. read more

Don't rent from here.! Independently owned and operated. I reserved with Avis online because it's my company preferred vendor. My gut instinct told me this place was shady: Showed up to the wife pretty much yelling at the poor guy returning his car with less gas then it came with. They made him leave to put gas, meanwhile they have no other cars to offer me so I'm left waiting for him to come back. Thy offered a camero but at more money-no thanks. Guy comes back and gets yelled at again for it not being totally full. Now I have to wait for the husband to wash the car and check it back in. Got into a car accident and needed to rent a car. I was really hesitant because of the reviews but really was trying to go for something that was cheap and affordable (in case I needed to actually pay for the rental). I called them to get some information, someone answered the phone (Dwight, I believe) and he mentioned that it was busy and he was at the shop by himself and to call an 800 number that he provided. No qualms about that, called the 800 number and got answers to my questions. Got my rental later that day and Dwight was amazing! This is a small shop, but let's be honest, it's in Culver City, it's not near a major airport so you can't expect too much. Dwight was attentive to the customer before me and to me. I felt like he treated us like family. He was honest, had a sense of humor, and shared his experiences with car accidents as well. Everything went smooth and I got a complimentary upgrade. I'd give this place 5 stars, but I'll wait till I return the rental and see how my experience is then. read more

This is my go-to rental car company. I rent every 3 - 4 months because my parents live in Vegas, and I like the drive, but don't want the miles on my car, and need something a little bigger for my whole family (doggies included). I have been coming to this location for car rentals for more than 2+-years. Its convenient to me--at first it was just across the street from my apartment, and then when I got married and moved 2-miles away--its been in perfect jogging distance. I come here because the managers/owners know me, and are very kind and accommodating...especially Lala. Love her. Since day-one, I've been treated with a ton of respect, my reservations have held up, and I've even been upgraded a time or two. Avis is not cheap, but I like the quality of vehicles, the convenience, and "a-place-where-people-know-my-name." Lala has always accommodated my "running behind schedule," or "can't bring the car back until tomorrow," and she has been SO COOL. I think its hard for a car-rental agency to get good reviews. Its a tough business. I just think people want to see the worst in car rental agencies. People are in a rush....they want to get on their wave, and the slightest inconvenience will end up in a negative review. AND people are cheap--they want to rent a Mercedes for the cost of a Kia. :) I'm a loyal customer. :) read more

I was hesitant to rent a car from this location due to the reviews but this location was less than miles away from my home. Upon arrival we were told our rental was not available. (We decided to pick up the car on a Sunday afternoon- they had very limited selection). Dwane, the Avis rep, told us he would upgrade us for free and were given an SUV instead. This SUV was literally coming out of the shop, cleaned and was being parked when we had pulled in the parking lot. My hubby and I traveled up to Davenport and Monterrey for the week and it was nice to have an SUV because it was easy to drive, had a great engine, good mileage and we felt it was way safer compared to the cars rented from Enterprise. Plus driving 5 hours from Monterrey to LA through the grapevine was not fun but neither of us got a numb bum And I have a bony butt. Our checkout was a tad long but Dwayne was friendly and professional. He also had a great sense of humor. My husband was to be the only driver for the rental but I was added as an additional driver for free. Before we were given the car, dwane and my hubby inspected the car. Which was funny since the car was almost new and had no marks and such. Overall we liked the rental (it even came with a rear view camera) and the service provided. I was to have surgery on Friday and the car was scheduled to be dropped off Saturday at noon. We anticipated on leaving the hospital at some point on Friday but was I was kept overnight instead. On Saturday morning, my hubby called Avis and explained that we would not be able to return the car at the given time because I was yet to be discharged. The rep told us it was fine and gave us an additional 2 hours. I will definitely rent from this place place again. And did I mention we paid a ridiculously low price for a 6 day rental?? read more

We used this car rental near the LAX airport. We got a shuttle from the airport to the car rental - this was convenient. The wait at the car rental was about 20 minutes - the agent was friendly and the person who delivered our car to the front was friendly. The car was awesome and we are thinking of getting this vehicle for ourselves. The price was affordable and we were able to seat 5 people, five large bags of luggage and we still had some wiggle room. We paid in advance so their were no extra fees and it was quick to drop off when we finished with using the car. read more

Avis has a frequent rental service that allows you to skip signing paperwork every time you rent a car. It's all tied to a Wizard Number that you get assigned. If you lose or forget your wizard number, you can retrieve it with your name and credit card number. However, in my case, I no longer had the credit card that I used when I opened the account. When I called customer service, Eddie from customer service assured me that if I didn't have the credit card number I should probably not rent a car from Avis. Avis has very poor and rude customer service. When I tried to speak with a manager, I just got hung up on. Keep this in mind when your choosing companies that you want to do business with. read more

This place feels like a scam and a front for some shady business operation. There is no service and most importantly... there are NO CARS at this place! I rented a car there last August. One person was in front of me in line. It took 25 minutes before I was helped. I was totally ignored. I was then told they didn't have a car for me, even though i had reserved it months ago and called 2 days earlier to confirm. I had ordered a full-size sedan. The only car they had left (because they don't keep cars at the their car rental place) was a Hyundai Genesis. They wanted me to take a shuttle all the way to LAX to give me a full-size car. I was livid and demanded they give me that car. So they did. It was very nice. I was happy. I was late getting to LAX to pick up my friends as a result of this very slow, inept service. Here's where it gets really crazy... Two hours later they phone me and tell me they have a full-size car. They demand I return the Genesis and get a Sonata or they will bill me triple the rate for the "premium" car. I insist I'm not bringing it back because it's their mistake that my car wasn't there. They said they'd charge me. I caved and swapped out the car. I insisted I get the Sonata for free instead of $25/day for the MASSIVE inconvenience. When i return the car, it takes them 30 minutes to check it in. I was obviously furious since no one else was there and I had to drive quite a ways to get to work. I complained to Avis Corporate and they ridiculously offered me a $25 coupon for a future visit, which i've never used because I told them I would never use Avis again. they gave us a car that was previously smoked in, without asking us if it's OK. we didn't realize there's something wrong with it, until we drove in it for a few miles. we went back to return it, and the lady at the front desk told us she forgot to tell us that it was smoked in, and she didn't want to change it, because she said she had no more cars. of course, there were cars in the parking lot, but she didn't want to budge, because other customers had reservations. this is not OK on so many levels! she had almost convinced us to go to another location to exchange it, when another person came to return a car. and we said we'll take it. she wasn't happy, but couldn't say "no" anymore. she gave us that car. when we returned, we found out that we have an extra charge, because we returned the first car too early or something. that was another hassle we had to take care of. and the people there are just not nice. they're not exactly rude, but dealing with them is anxiety inducing: you never know what their mood is going to be like, if you'll get a car or not, and if you'll get charged for hidden things. it's just terrible. read more
