This is now the second Avis location we've visited in two days. Do not rent from Avis , the experience has been absolutely horrific. We made our reservation over three weeks ago, and when we arrived at the first location (Warren Street, Downtown NYC), we were told there were no cars available. Instead, they tried to give two women a pickup truck -- in New York City. I don't drive pickup trucks. On top of that, the staff at that location were among the rudest and anti women, men I've ever encountered. We were then sent to another location on 54th Street Uptown, the next day, where we waited for nearly two hours, and some people had already been waiting three hours or more. Ultimately, we lost our vacation and travel plans due to your company's complete lack of organization and professionalism. Avis, I expect to be reimbursed not only for the transportation costs I incurred while attempting to retrieve a vehicle but also for the financial and emotional cost of a ruined vacation. read more

Just had the best experience with Rasheeda! This is my normal location, but my family and I have gone to JFK last time. We wanted to book closer to get on the road sooner. They closed early, says online they close at 3pm and I was outside at 2:58pm looking at a lights off/gate down. Also I knew I was running late and talked to a representative who claimed they would be open past 3pm to accommodate us. When I called customer service to help, the only solution they gave was picking a car up at Newark Airport and paying an addition $107. I have often experienced unprovoked rude and slow customer service at this location. It takes them a long time to bring the car: sometimes I have had to wait a half hour or longer even when there was no one ahead of me. This is an overdue review. I've rented from this location multiple times over the past few years and each time the car was clean and ready to go, on return there have been no issues. Location is ideal for getting in and out of the city since it's right by the west side highway. Additionally everyone is very nice and professional. During my most recent encounter I accidentally left my wallet in the glove compartment and didn't notice until they were already closed. I called first thing in the morning and they said the car has already left to another location and has been rented out. Eventually they were able to track down the car and find my wallet that day. I came in a few hours later and was able to pick up my wallet with all of it's contents. I really appreciate them for being able to get it back for me. This is an A+ location and staff. read more

This review is long over due. I've actually used this location several times. Each time it has been easy and stressless. Especially this passed weekend given it was Thanksgiving. When I arrived, the Avis team had me wait outside the door. This actually made me happy because they were taking their Covid protocols seriously. It wasn't more than 5 mins and Nathan at the desk helped me out. I made a reservation online or so I thought... Nathan helped me adjusted my appointment and I was on the road in no time. Nathan was professional, witty, and extremely helpful as was the rest of the team. Considering it could of gone either way given I didn't book it right in the first place AND a holiday weekend. SAVE YOUR TIME! We waited 3 hours in the standing room only little but. I don't understand why it takes 30+ minutes per person to be processed. There's two computers they could at least cut the time in half if there's some genuine reason for this crazy wait time. The lady behind the counter is a little slow at typing, but she's really nice and works to get you what you need. I'm disgusted with this place. If I could give it a dam zero I would. And I made the mistake of not reading previous reviews because I was in a rush. That will never happen again! I will never rent from this company or location again. When I rented the vehicle they didn't let me look it over for any scratches or dents. The employee tells me not to worry about minor scratches or dents. He fills out the vehicle slip and turns it in for me. When I bring the vehicle back the same day another employee (Julio) walks straight to the hood of the car and points out a dent on the hood. He doesn't even walk around the rest of the car. I wasn't even out of the driver's seat yet when another employee (Aesha) walks up to the window and says I need your paperwork there is a dent on the hood. I told her there was not a dent and the car was only driven for a few hours. They showed me the hood and I was in shock! It was a ding that was less than an inch. You can't even see it. I told her the employee who gave me the slip to sign in the morning said not to worry about minor scratches or dings. Aesha shows me the slip and none of employee's information was on there and he checked off no dents or scratches. (See attached picture) I ask Aesha who was the employee who worked in the morning and she said she did not know. Really?? She can't look at the schedule? Ridiculous! Lies!!! So while giving her the rest of my paperwork I told her that I will be calling Avis cooperate office to let them know how rude and unprofessional they are. She then tells me that since I bought the 12 dollar insurance from them that I'm not liable for the damage. I told really? So you and the other employee (Julio) disrespected me and now I'm supposed to forget about it because it's covered. Not gonna happen. These people are scammers!! If you read other reviews they try to charge customer's insurance companies for minor crap. They thought they were going to do that to me that's why they treated me like crap before they got my paperwork. As soon as she saw that I bought the insurance she changed her tone. I don't think so!!!! Then I noticed on my receipt that their was an additional $100.00 charge. I ask Aesha what the charge was and she said that's a deposit that's placed on your card when you rent it. I said, "Are you serious?" When I rented the car that morning no one told me that. I explained to her that I understood about a deposit being held but it would of been nice if someone told me. Living in the city I don't keep a car, I rely on car rental companies and taxi companies such as Avis, Hertz, Uber, Zipcar and the classic Yellow Cabs. Usually before I rent I check out the competitive prices nearby. This location usually has lower prices and availability as opposed to the other companies in the area, sometimes renting a car from this location is less expensive than a Zipcar for a few hours. The staff is not particularly friendly but they got the job done. I've never had any problems renting from this location and it remains my neighborhood goto place for a last minute reservation at a good price. read more

I think this location of Avis Rent A Car has moved since it's original information was first posted on Yelp. I think this is now the 515 West 43rd Street location (between 10th & 11th Avenues). I had what was probably my first "perfect" car rental experience in NYC at this location last week! Service was super fast and friendly (I know - you are reading this and thinking "fast AND friendly service at a car rental place in NYC? Impossible!!!" But I can assure you, it's true!) - the agent was very knowledgeable and pleasant. I was in and out of there within 5 minutes. Returning the car was even easier. I just pulled in and there was an agent waiting for me with a handheld device where she recorded all the car stats and printed out a receipt for me in seconds flat! No going back to the counter and waiting on a long line to complete my transaction and get a receipt. Amazing! I only wish I had known about this location sooner! I'll be back for sure - and not just because I get a corporate discount through my employer ;-) read more

We rented a car from this Avis and the employee overlooking the car walked around the car quickly and said it was good to go. I also began to walk around the car and I was pointing out some minor dents and scratches, he stopped me and said we didn't have to worry about those bc they were minor. I said ok bc I've been told that before. Well, unbeknownst to me he put "no damage" on the pink slip and he didn't put his name on it. Most car rental places write minor dents and scratches on the slip, in fact, there was a section he could have circled on the slip for that but he didn't (see photo). We returned same day and 2 Avis employees stepped out (Aesha & Julio). We didn't even exit the car yet and Julio walked straight to the hood and pointed out a minor dent (see photos) to Aesha. Neither one bothered to look over the rest of the car which I found suspicious. I asked Aesha for her name and for the other employee's name, she hesitated and asked me why I needed to know. Luckily we paid for the insurance but I feel like they're scamming people on false insurance claims if they don't pay for the extra insurance. I read Yelp reviews for that Avis and sure enough...scam artists. I should have read the reviews sooner but here's my experience as well to show authenticity. If I can give them zero stars I would. Be cautious with this location and take pictures of your rental in case they try to bill you for bogus charges. I returned my vehicle and informed the 2 attendants that I couldn't put gas in the car as the gas lid was not opening, they verified and they couldn't open it either. I now received a bill and phone call that stated I returned the car without the gas lid and they even submitted pictures for the claim. The audacity for them to lie and submit pictures showing the lid was missing when I returned the car with the lid on, is unbelievable, (especially considering I am a corporate client). read more

We had a bad experience with our reservation. Leaving in a party of five individuals with lots of luggage we reserved a full size SUV and called twice to confirm weeks in advance. We were going on a long road trip. Having checked out of hotels we were on the street with no choice but to take what they offered us; a small SUV. Employee was indifferent and aggressive when I complained. She explained that was normal to expect such a thing and that we had to check availability directly with the local office. This meant that it was meaningless to call the 800 number, have a reservation of a specific class or expect Avis to provide whatever car class you paid for. They will provide you something, but not necessarily what you reserved; based on availability. Go figure. Quite certainly the last time I fall for this. read more

CHECK YOUR RECEIPT - EXTRA CHARGES My husband and I opted out of the fuel service and returned our car with a tank of full gas to the Avis. When we got home, I was looking at the receipt and saw we were charged for the fuel service. We called Avis and they said we had to return to Avis to get the adjustment done. The woman at the counter told us we MUST provide the person we return the car to with a receipt that we fueled the car. I have rented cars for years from Avis and other car rental companies and have never been told that if we opt out of the fuel service we MUST provide a receipt of filling the gas. Nobody from Avis has ever told us we need to provide a receipt of fueling. We just returned a car to Avis on Thursday and was not asked to provide a gas receipt nor charged for fuel service. We told the woman at the counter that our gas receipt was left in the cup holder in the car and she basically said, "IF it's not in the cup holder then there's nothing we can do about it." We literally just returned the car about half an hour ago, if nobody rented and returned the car, the fuel gauge will still show a full tank. It is sad and disappointing that she did not check the car first and see if the receipt is there. When we returned the car, a person came and checked the gauges on the car for 5 minutes. Since the miles are unlimited, if he is not checking the fuel gauge, what on earth is he checking? As a courtesy, Avis should at least let us know that we have to show the receipt, that way we can have the receipts available. What a sneaky move. Terrible customer service, I will not be using this Avis ever again and do not recommend this Avis. Well it seems like all the car rentals in NYC range from poor, bad and worst so take your pick of rip off rentals. Our car had overheating tires, it shook and rattled down the highway like it was about to breakdown, the etoll pass didn't work and avis took no responsibility for it. The receptionist actually ran out of the office and yelled at the car attendant to stop us from going back to the car to write down the etoll number! Considering I've had some pretty poor experiences at rental car locations in NYC, this is definitely the worst. I have been waiting in line for over an hour. There are only 3 people in front of me. And there have only been 4 people in front of me since I got here. The woman working at the front desk at 11 am on July 21st 2018 (she's not wearing a name tag or I'd write her name) is INCREDIBLY rude. She is the only person here and has been talking down to every single person she has spoken to so far and has done nothing but complain under her breath (except loud enough for everyone to hear) the entire time we have been waiting. She answers the phone every 2 minutes and repeats her complaints to whoever she is talking to at least 3 more times before hanging up. I am just finding out that they also don't have any cars here for anyone despite the fact that we (myself and many others in line) made reservations in advance. They don't have any "working" GPS's available for any cars either so if you needed one- tough luck. I am anticipating another 30 minutes before I make it to the desk and another 45 after that before I get a car. An incredibly disorganized location and a woman who is clearly not fit to run this place on her own "without a manager" (her words). If I hadn't been waiting so long already- I'd cancel this reservation and take my business to another company entirely. Find another rental location. read more

I found the service previously fine, however this last rental was a near disaster and the after-service was atrocious. I got a car which i didn't realise had four wrongly inflated tyres and one of them had a slow puncture. The car was lethal and i got absolute no satisfaction when I complained. I have tried for nearly 3 months to get someone to admit they made a mistake and gave me a dangerous car. I have been confronted by the written equivalent of a speak-your- weight- machine and using the "normal" complaints procedure got me totally ignored. Absolutely went above and beyond in customer service. Originally had a reservation at another Avis location in Midtown and they did not have the car size I reserved available. The rep at the original Avis (who was also very helpful, by the way), called Carly at this location and asked him to hold a car for me. When I arrived, Carly was extremely helpful and got me out the door with the right car quickly. Then, when I returned the car, the gentleman checking me in was friendly and upbeat. There was an issue with my coupon, and Carly again went out of his way to get it sorted out. I rent Avis cars for work almost every week, and have expectations of courtesy, but rarely see this type of dedication to customer service. My renting experience with Avis was horrible. I arrived at the location on time when the agent told me there was no car available. According to her, it is a common occurrence in Manhattan. Though I understand that the demand for car rental is probably higher in the city, I did make the reservation ahead of time and there should be a better way for Avis to plan accordingly so the Company does not waste its customer's time. We then waited an hour for the car to finally show up and the car does not even have a full tank (about 1/8th empty). And only until we were returning the car we realized that the agent who gave us our car marked the tank as full. To make the experience even "better", after I returned the car, I checked my credit card statement and realized that I was charged an upgrade fee. Nothing was ever communicated to me about the upgrade, not by the agent at the location nor via email. So I called the customer service and during the first round of interaction, the agent informed me that because the car was larger and we used their resources, I have to pay for the upgrade and he only offered me 25% back for the upgrade fee. It was an infuriating experience from the start to the end. I cannot believe this is how Avis is conducting its business, by not providing the services that was promised to its customer and by cheating customers with additional charges. read more
