I was reaaaaally nervous to rent from here, after seeing how poor the reviews are. I went with Dollar Car because it is honestly the cheapest option in Manhattan, and considering that I am also under 25, I knew I'd already be paying a lot. I surprisingly had an incredible experience. The staff was SUPER friendly. The car was in perfect condition (still had that "new car smell" and 3/4 tank of gas). And the pickup / return experience went smoothly. We even got there a little early and had the car on the road 30 minutes before the scheduled pickup. I will say that their website is NOT reflective of the final price. I did call ahead of time to find out what the additional fees would be for being an underage driver, taxes, etc. so I knew what I was expecting going into it. I would recommend doing this to avoid unexpected charges. read more

Service I wanted to share my experience yesterday at Dollar. We waited for a car for 45 mins because the computers downstairs were not working. The employee was not apologetic and we had the impression he was slowing down the process. We moved to the hertz office upstairs ... 20 minutes later still no car, no apologies and he was filling a form manually for 10 mins. Never had such a bad experience. I had an insurance and an umbrella I rent cars all the time and he gave me a lesson on insurance, I let him talk but considering then he took 45 mins to figure out the computer / car situation, he should have spared us the lecture retrospectively. His colleagues had no issue with computer and were nice. There was barely anyone in the store. The attitude, lack of apology was unusual. He threw the keys at us literally did not show us the car told us that was the one left. Terrible experience. Really not happy about it. No the service we are used to. If he is so bored he should be doing something not involving customer. read more

They overbooked and never bothered to call to say they didn't have any cars. I'm giving a very unusual four star review to our car rental office. My experience was completely painless and I go so far as to say relatively positive. I picked up my car, in and out in 15 minutes. Rented a one way car on short notice the night before online through Orbitz. I then read some yelp reviews and got nervous that they wouldn't have my car there. I called in the morning and spoke with someone at the corporate office to confirm that I would have a car ready for me. I believe she called the local place directly and was able to confirm it would be there. I also made a minor change in the time of pickup. When I arrived at the garage, I didn't have any problems. The car was ready as expected and there were no issues in picking it up in a timely manner. The only minor issue I had was that the office is small so there is no privacy. One employee was helping me and was friendly and cordial, however the other employee was on the phone with someone whom he was arguing with, so I got to hear an earful of that argument. Not the end of the world, but it would have been better if he could have had that phone call in private. read more

I rented an SUV at the Dallas/Fort Worth airport. when my husband came to pick up the car at the counter. the staff didn't explain what kind of good that the customer they gave all were obligated to follow because they wanted to be safe for my trip. then they charged all the amount in the bill. I rent for 1 day only 32.99 x17 = 573.49. Everyone know that they charge me up to over $2,500. I really don't believe they are blatantly scamming. Was there somebody in front of me when I arrived at 7:15 AM for a 7 AM pick up? Yes. Was it the end of the world? No. Was the car they initially assigned the one I reserved? No. They didn't have it. Be prepared to wait at least 30 minutes regardless on how many people are here. You wait will be longer if there's more people. I would add 10 extra minutes for each person that's in front of you. So at least plan to arrive an hour early then when you want to hit the road (cause it takes 30 min to check in and another 30F for then to fetch the car). For some reason once you check in there is a long lag for someone to get the car. I've rented at budget and Avis in the city and this was definitely the worst. I would avoid at all cost and recommend Avis if you are short on time. read more

WORST car rental experience ever! If I could give zero stars, I would! We waited 2 hours to get the car, got bad "advice" aka lied to, broken promises and the worst customer care you can imagine. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We waited two hours to get the car we had already registered for online. The store was chaos! The guy at the store told us not to get the toll-package, as we "only are going upstate and will encounter 2 tolls" - they keep charging me for tolls, even 3 months after the trip! The worst part is, that they said my personal card (that I had registered with them online) couldn't be read at the store due to some system issue. Put in the spot, I had no other option other than using my company credit card for the deposit - they promised me and reassured me at the store, that they would not actually post any charges on the company card, and that all the charges would go on my personal card, that was already in their system..... that was 100% a lie! All the charges has been made on my company card, and I have had to explain this to my boss - 4 separate charges during the past 3 months! I have called them to ask them to stop using my company card, and register my personal credit card for the charges - and they got aggressive with me and refused to help me! Such bullsh*t! The whole ordeal was insanity...we booked the car till 11:30pm with Priceline. But Dollar apparently closes at 10pm. When we arrived to drop off the car at 10:59pm we were greeted by the rudest individual from a parking garage company that Dollar Car uses to store thier vehicles. He was incredibly rude and confrontational. We had to force him to accept the car. After a 30 minute phone call with Priceline to assist they finally were able to get a hold of someone from Dollar Car and Dollar told him that they would accept the car..."supposedly ". We were then charged an extra day fee and on top of all of that, the EZ Pass we paid for was not in the car so we had to pay tolls on top of the money we already paid for the nonexistent EZ Pass. Overall a horrible experience from Priceline and Dollar. Priceline should not be allowing car rentals till 11:30 if Dollar closes at 10pm. This staff at this place will lie to you about how much you are being charged. I was quoted for an upgrade. When they billed me after the return, they had charged me more than what I was told! This is transparent scamming in broad daylight. Adding to the above, the staff at this place was incredibly rude. The garage staff yelled swear words at me at the top of his lungs when I asked him where to park the returned car. You will get better customer service from an East Harlem crack dealer. Car pickup was set for 10am, it's currently 12pm and we still haven't gotten our car. There was an hour wait just to get into the office and then supposedly it was another hour to get the car.. we're still waiting. Horrible service, just plain inefficient and understaffed. We lost a museum reservation we had at 1 pm at our destination and don't know if we will be able to make it to our second one. Don't rent a car here if you expect to get out of the city on time or at least plan ahead for the minimum 3 hours wait to get your vehicle. In January I rented a car for a trip to Florida. Well as everyone knows travel plans have changed due to COVID-19 . I contacted Dollar Car rental and I was instructed to cancel my reservation through the email portal on the company website to not be charged a cancellation fee. I waited the ten days for a confirmation email and received nothing. So I called back and found out my reservation was not cancelled. It took 3X's to get through to reservations and about one and a half hours until I got an agent to cancel the reservation. I got my credit about a week later with a fifty dollar cancellation fee deducted! I called back four times was on hold for forty five minutes and consistently disconnected! I finally emailed customer service and they said too bad. Also don't email us back because we are not going to answer you. No wonder the parent company Hertz is in chapter eleven. read more

In addition, the customer service representatives are warm and friendly in a way that is uncharacteristic of typical New Yorkers. Allow me to cut to the chase. Don't do it. I was a loyal customer for years before purchasing my own vehicle. Their customer care has declined drastically & miserably.  On October 1, 2015 I had made what I thought was a solid car rental reservation as I had done so many times before in past years with Dollar. Dollar car rental had other plans. I should have taken the first clues upon discovering that their popular east side location that I used to frequent is now defunct & the address they included for their location on West 52nd street in the confirmation email wasn't a complete address (failed to state the building number and the GPS location pin link pinpointed an inaccurate location). Awesome.  Took a $25 cab ride to the implied location (implied: 52nd street btwn 10th & 9th Aves) only to have to google while sitting in the back of the cab the true address (actual: 263 W. 52nd street btwn Broadway & 8th Ave). All this takes place on a busy, rainy Friday evening  Finally after successfully finding the location from the backseat of a cab, after waiting about 15-20 minutes for a them to service their lone customer & then to acknowledge my presence, I was unapologetically informed they they do not accept debit cards. At no point during the online rental reservation process was this stated. Not during the reservation process & not in the confirmation email. This was a brand new policy that was either less than or about a month old at them time of my attempted rental.  I was to drive to North Carolina to attend my grandmother's 90th birthday celebration. Thanks to Dollar & it's failure to properly advise of it's rental policies & my not being aware that they were not the same reliable Dollar that was once my "go to" rental company. *I am writing this review just shy of five months after my awful & final experience with Dollar in an attempt to demonstrate that my review is not fueled by anger or extreme disappointment. I feel compelled to update my original review, as I wrote it more than four years ago! In short, this is THE only car rental location I go to in Manhattan, because I have found their service to be positive and consistent. Maybe it's because I know what's needed by them (such as a credit card, driver's license and what types of holds or fees may be applied to my card), and I know what I want when I rent a car (such as getting liability coverage, but not using the EZ Pass function). Honestly, if you read the fine print, there should be few, if any, surprises when renting a vehicle. I've never found a single suspicious charge or any inaccuracy on my bill or credit card statement, as some others reviewers have posted. (Still, always good to check, though!) Each vehicle I have rented (I always rent economy size) has been clean and full of gas; they used to have a clause in which of have to fill the gas tank to what it previously was; one of the very first times I rented a car from them, the tank was at 1/8 full! Fun finding a gas station right away. (Haaa.) Now, cars come full and they must be returned with a full tank, or get charged a fee for Dollar to refill it. Easy enough! I love that thy are opened seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.; I almost always rent on weekends, and there are some other car rental spots in and around my neighborhood (Washington Heights, Inwood, and Kingsbridge), but they are never opened on Sundays! I find that to be horribly inconvenient. I've found the staff to be friendly and competent. I almost always get Santos, just by coincidence, and I think he is wonderful! It's like clockwork with him, and I am check in and in the system in less than five minutes. Also, Dollar does have some strict rules on late car returns; I rented one very recently for 24 hours; I checked out at 1:22 p.m. one day and returned it at 1:31 p.m. the next day. (Damn those 9 minutes!) However, the woman that checked my car out fudge the return time a little for me, saving me from the late fee. I appreciated it. ;-) But! Be cognizant. If you go in knowing what you want, what to expect, and you read the fine print, you should be good as gold. If I hated this place, I wouldn't be a loyal customer for almost five years. Usually a big fan of Dollar, but this time had mixed feelings. I had reserved my rental months ago, but when I had went to pick it up they had given it away. I had to pay extra to upgrade so just get a rental. I didn't have a choice so paid for it. Selling tactic on the additional insurance was good, didn't realize I had agreed to it until I was walking out. Staff could've been nicer but I wasn't expecting much. Lastly, I forgot to fill up the tank before dropping off and it ended up costing me almost as much as the rental itself. This was my fault, but I can't believe how much the company charges for gas. It pains me to give this place even one star. I wish there were a zero stars option for this. I made my reservation weeks in advance, only to show up and be told there were "no cars available" and they weren't sure when they would arrive. I was told to wait for them to call me. When they called, 2 1/2 hours later, they told me to hurry back. I did, only to find out that they only had received one Honda Civic, and I had reserved a full-size car (which I had made a point to discuss with the agent when I first arrived). I was going upstate with a lot of stuff and needed the room. They told me I could come back in the morning, that there would be more cars, but I was already paying for a vacation home and had to leave that day. I was again told to wait; called back two hours later and was finally given a mid-sized SUV, over FOUR hours after my original reservation. This ruined my weekend as I had paid for my vacation home the whole time and would have been upstate enjoying it. So, we had to leave the next morning. BUT! Turns out, the SUV had a mechanical defect that caused the A/C and heat to BLAST on and off into the drivers face at random, would not turn off, and was extremely uncomfortable and distracting. So I call the Dollar, since they had assured me that there would be cars in the next morning. Nope. No cars, none at all at any NYC location. So really, the guy lied to me and I would have waited an entire day not to have a car the next morning. We had to drive to Newark airport to change out the car. By this time, the weekend was really, totally ruined. The worst part was that no one cared at all. Dollar staff at this location gave me 10% my next rental (never happening) and a free tank of gas (not worth all my time). NEVER AGAIN. read more

BIGGEST SCAMMER ON THE PLANET ! AVOID AT ALL COST ! reserved our car online to go to Woodbury Commons, picked up the next morning at 10am - the rep was NOT pleasant and tried to sell us easy pass rental for additional $18 and additional unwanted insurance (we refused both). He sent us off with stating that as long as we return the car before 10am we would be fine. returned after 10pm (around 11pm) on the same day - mind you this is a 24 hour garage = someone should be there to close out the bill / receive the car. there was a giant line. guess everyone was returning the car on the same night. took about 25 min of wait till our turn. the garage guy told us he only had the power to close out part of the bill (who does that?), and told us that either we'd have to pay $40 overnight garage storage to hold the car till the next morning when the "rep" comes in to close out the tab, or we'd have to park it somewhere and we would bring the car back before 10am. We were miffed and did not understand the logic at all- we rented and returned the car at the exact same garage ! but it was almost midnight and we were tired, so we sucked it up and paid the $40. by the time we left the garage there were many people still lining up returning their cars and trying to get themselves out of having to pay this fee. we called in the morning to confirm that the transaction was fully closed out. The direct phone number was NOT published anywhere and we had to call multiple 1800 numbers to reach a real person. that person told us that our tab was already fully closed out THE NIGHT BEFORE. we clearly got scammed with that additional $40. we are just so sick of these scammers we just rather not deal with them ever again than to argue for this money back. we're completely done with these liars and vow to never return. read more

I had to rent a car for a work meeting and came to dollar rental. At the counter there was one employee with 8 customers waiting in like not including myself. This location is on midtown manhattan so for one employee to be working there is crazy. I waited in line for over 45 min with no air conditioner since the air was broken. Then when I went to get my car downstairs it took another 15 min to bring it. Horrible!! Frustrating experience. Next time I'll use zip car or über. read more

I would give this no stars if possible but I want people to be aware of something. When you sign the contract for dollar you are also authorizing them to release your credit card information to plate pass LLC ATS processing services,LLC and American traffic solutions Inc... And so on. basically they operate under so many names because they are a scam. These names are different names that will show up in your credit card. This company in conjunction with dollar automatically charges you when you go through tolls even if you "opt out" and decline the use of plate pass service straight up when picking up the vehicle. In the contract it states that even if you decline the so called "optional service " they will charge you. Thus rendering it not an option and should therefore make your contract null and void. There is no way to opt out. Once you go through the toll it automatically actives. How is that optional? The transponder automatically turns on when you go through a toll even if the transponder is off and you opt out. Basically it is not optional to opt out of using this service. In the contract way at the bottom it states even if you opt out of using the service it will still automatically activate when you go through a toll ... So in other words it is in no way optional. Along with charging you the toll they hit you with a bunch of administrative fees. So you think your safe because you respectfully opted out of the over priced plate pass scam. Guess what you didn't because it isn't optional it activates automatically when you go through a toll. BEWARE. It's a scam and the company "plate pass " or all the other names they collect money under will not help in fact they make you even more upset about the situation. Even if the transponder is removed from the car they said they read the license plate and trace it back ... Charging you no matter what. Total scam and makes me sick inside knowing many other unsuspecting customers will have to deal with this stress and robbery. Do not rent from here. It's cheap for a reason because they are giving your credit card information to a third party scam company with out clearly stating it you .. Until surprise !you get a charge on your credit card. I booked a car a couple days in advance. I recieved a confirmation email. The DAY of my pickup which was the morning of my sister's wedding, I go to the location. The "customer service" rep, Mark, is standing outside smoking a cigarette. He barely moves out of the way of the door and says, "you got a reservation?" I reply, "Yup." His response, "It's not happening. We overbooked." I was floored. I was going to be late to my own sister's wedding ceremony. I was HORRIFIED at his attitude. He didn't care. His options were, "go to another company." I sat there there with my friend and desperatly dialed Avis, Budget, Hertz, Hertz Connect, nobody had anything last minute. I asked him how could they do this. In a desperate move I ended up calling Dial 777 and getting a car. The trip each way was 275.00. I got there in time thankfully. The manager at this location is CHRISTINE FORBES She was allegedly not there and trying to pick up cars for later in the day. Don't risk using Dollar, ever. I will never use them again. Furthermore, I have submitted a small claims here in NYC to recover to cost of the car service. My rental would have been about 150.00 I did what I had to do to get to the wedding paying over 500.00. read more

I won't pretend this rental car company doesn't have issues (as they all do!) like long waits for your car on a really busy weekend, etc. But I've never been to a place where every staff member is nicer than the next. This place was packed today. We had to wait longer than I'd wanted (which happens all over the city every summer); but the manager kept us informed and the two other staff members I interacted with were so patient and helpful. They could not have been having a good day with the crowds today, but you'd never have known. That actually saved an otherwise terrible day to rent a car in the city! read more

Tried to use a $50 GC that was given to me by Dollar Rental corporate from a previous screw up. They were unable to apply the coupon, so they kicked the can down the road to when I was to return the car in Baltimore. They were unable to apply it as well, and told me to call corporate 1-800 number. No help there, as they told me that I should have used it when I picked up the car in NYC. Why should a company require a credit check when using a debit card when they can automatically put a hold for a required amount on your bank account. I've never had problems with other companies. So don't bother using any Dollar rental with REAL money unless you want to LOWER your credit score. Also being NYC why just one agent? Don't use this place. Seriously. I came here on a Saturday with a reservation. Came an hour before and still waited in a long line. After 30 minutes and not moving, they announced they had no more cars. This was at 1030AM on a Saturday. After putting my name down on a list, and coming and going, they were unable to give an update or even tell me if more cars were on their way over an hour later. The staff was... Nice, but not helpful. They also stated how this was pretty much a constant occurrence on Saturdays. Avoid like the plague. read more
