I had a wonderful experience at this Avis location. Miguel was warm, friendly, and helped me find a very clean and comfortable car. While I was waiting, I noticed he was overwhelmingly busy because he was working all by himself. Avis - Car Rental Near Me - San Diego, California

Don't rent a car from here. I rented from this abominable location because I am a loyal Avis customer, an Avis Preferred Plus member, and this was the closest Avis to where I live. First, know that this is a small kiosk in a hotel (Embassy Suites) staffed with one service representative. I waited in line for over 15 minutes before this one fella could get to me. He was a friendly guy with the ability to deliver even the worst news with a smile. Despite my reservation for a car, Mr. Friendly informed me there were no cars available. Then, with a straight face and a poised smile, Mr. Friendly suggested I wait for 2 hours until he closes up so that he could drive me to the airport to pick up my car there. Nice of him (I guess) but that just wasn't going to work for me. Channeling my inner-Trump, I insisted that I get an Uber and that Avis pays for it. After a lengthy phone call, Mr. Friendly told me it was all set, and that the airport location would cover my Uber. I took my Uber to the airport and, although they had a car available, the manager there had heard nothing of this promise of an Uber reimbursement and indicated to me that Mr. Friendly at the La Jolla Village Drive location did not have the authority to tell me the airport location would cover my Uber because they're owned by different entities. I obviously wasn't having any of this. Perhaps sensing that I was about to go nuclear, the airport location eventually acquiesced and reimbursed me. All said and done, this ordeal wasted an hour and a half of my day. When I went to drop off the car mid-day during business hours, no one was at the location -- just a sign indicating to call a phone number. I called the number and it rang for what seemed like forever before going to voicemail. Meanwhile I had no idea where to drop the car off since when I initially came to this location to pick my car up, they didn't have any. After asking multiple hotel personnel, I found someone who knew where the Avis cars were parked, in a hidden back lot. Of course, when I got the invoice in email later that day, my $384 rental somehow turned into a $642 rental. More of my time was wasted on-hold with the Avis corporate customer care center trying to explain how badly Mr. Friendly screwed me by not recognizing that I had purchased a fuel plan on my original reservation, not carrying over my corporate discount code, adding a 11.11% concession recovery fee, and adding another $45 customer facility charge. Avis corporate eventually sorted it out and refunded me the bogus additional charges after another 40 minutes of my time was wasted. Put simply, I am an unhappy, frustrated customer who generally likes Avis, but will not rent a car from this particular location again. read more

Where do I even begin.. I made a reservation on Saturday to pick up a car on Sunday. My go to car rental is enterprise but this place is open on Sundays and that was very convenient for me. I made a reservation for 10am and came here a little later than expected, so at 11am. When I got here, there was no one at the desk. The kiosk is located inside the hotel lobby. However there was a phone number provided and it said away from the desk but call if needed. So I called and no one answered. I waited for about half an hour and then finally the lady came. She saw me and did not say hi or hello and did not acknowledge that I was waiting here for so long. She simply asked my name and handed me the keys. There was another customer waiting behind me to drop off. Most rental places walk you to your car and then inform you of any dents or scratches. But nothing here. I requested a small economic car but she offered me a Larger car cause that was all they had. I did not mind since I was already late. The license plate was dented so I had to go back inside and talk to her about that. On my way back I was she was trying to leave the desk again, but thank God I caught her on time. I will know more about this place and their service when I return the car tomorrow. But overall, very unsatisfactory. Would not recommend ever! Only thing is convenience. But if possible go somewhere else! Returned my car on Tuesday. Same thing. No one is at the desk! Worst place ever! And then when asked for a receipt she told me the printer is not working. Avis - Inside the embassy suites hotel - Car Rental Near Me - San Diego, California

This was my first time using Avis and I will never use it again. Horrible experience. I was nickeled and dimed by the minute, and very wrongly. This location where I returned my rental is especially terrible. The location: 1 star It was only 5 min drive from my hotel so convenient location to return my rental. However, it is located inside Embassy Suites and there are NO SIGNS that it is a kiosk inside the hotel. There are also no signage for Avis car return at all. The service: 0 stars I arrive at 8:30 and nobody is at this kiosk. I wait for 15-20 minutes and a lady shows up. She takes her sweet time to check my return rental and it took a full 30+ minutes to return my car. She never explained additional charges I had (not) incurred and told me to check my receipt myself. The issue: I picked up my car at 8am at Little Italy location and returned it the next day at this La Jolla location around 8:30am. Yes, I was late to returning my car but most places have a grace period and they waive it. But fine, I'm willing to pay for it but I was charged for a full hour. My original one day reservation was $50 and the extra hour cost $38. Not only this, the lady who worked at this La Jolla location (inside Embassy Suites) where I returned my car did not explain that I had charges, only to insert my card. I asked her "are there any extra charges?" And she said "I don't know, I just printed your receipt and now you have it. Look at it." All other car rental places explain the additional charges!!! On being late, I thought it was unfair to be charged for a full hour. Since the lady on location was not helpful, I called the corporate help line. They pulled up my reservation and said "you picked up your car at 7:58am and returned it at 9:00am." And I said " I arrived around 8:30am (approximation) but the lady was not at the desk for 15-20 minutes and then she went outside to check the mileage on my car for 15 minutes. Why am I charged for her absence? She came back to sit down at 9am to print my receipt but I technically returned my car earlier." Then the customer rep lady said there is a 29 minute grace period but since I returned the car at 8:30am, it is still 3 minutes too late because I picked up my car at 7:58am. So now I get a full hour charged for 3 minutes. If you want to be specific about it, there's no way I picked up the car at the first facility at 7:58am because the place opens at 8. If you want to be fair, I didn't make the actual transaction at the counter until 8:30am. So the real comparison should be 8:30 to 8:30am! Then the lady on the phone said "the best I can offer you is a 15% refund." So now I'm charged $32 instead of $38. Big whoop, and it's the principle of it. Recording the time when I WALKED INTO FACILITY as my pickup time vs. when the attendant finished paperwork is not apples to apples! Either count when both attendants finished paperwork or when I walked into both facilities but you cannot have it both ways. What a con artist company with ZERO leeway so they can nickel and dime their customers. Never again. read more

Conveniently near my hotel, I rented a car from this location because I didn't want to pick one up at the airport. As the Avis worker handed me the keys, he said, "BTW, the car is G3." Me: "What's that? The model?" Avis Worker: "No, we measure the fuel in our cars in one-eighth increments. G8 is a full tank, and G4 is half full. Your car is G3. Just return the car at G3." Me: "Okay." [I never rented a car that wasn't full before...but whatever] When I returned the car at the San Diego Airport, the check-in guy asked me if I filled up the car. I told him about G3 and he said, "What is that?" Me: "You know, G3?" Employee: "I have no idea what you're talking about." Me: "I was told to bring the car back three-eighths full." Employee: "I don't have that kind of information on my handheld. You need to talk to someone in the office." The employee contacted the office and in a few minutes, an office worker appeared. Office Worker: "How can I help you?" Me: "The guy I rented the car from said I could return it G3." Office Worker: "Huh?" Me: "When I rented the car, it was only three-eighths full." Office Worker: [looks at paper in his hand] "It doesn't say anything about that in your file." At that point, the office worker said he needed to check the car's odometer. He walked over to the car, which was being washed. When the office worker was near the car, the employees washing the car started throwing wet sponges at him. He ran away like a scared rabbit. Me: [thinking: this is not happening to me] After the brief, one-sided skirmish, the office worker checked the mileage and returned. He wrote something on the paper he was holding and said... Office Worker: "Okay, I'll waive the gas charge." Me: "Thank you." read more

Its mostly a pleasure dealing with this Avis location. The customer service of most of the folks are very good. It can get a little troubling with customer service when it is very busy. The person at the desk has to manage the car cleaning as well looks like. Multiple times had to wait 20+ mins as no one was at the desk. Had a bad experience once when there was a trainee guy at the desk . He din know much and he was asking the lady at the desk for guidance. In the end the guy din mention important details of the reservation and had to face issues in billing due to that. Overall a pleasant experience dealing with this location. read more

We have been renting from Avis and this location has been the worst. The Avis Rep at the location are not courteous and they try to rent out the cars which are not cleaned properly or not even cleaned in first place. I was offered a car which had leftovers from the previous rentals. I had to pick a car which had battery problems and in the end had to waste 4 hrs of my time waiting for the roadside assistance. In the end they are not even apologetic of what had happened. Avoid this place if you want to have a trouble free rental experience. read more

I rented a car for one day, but I was charged for two days because I was about 1 hour 30 minutes late. I don't rent car often and I have had car rentals with companies which provide 2 hour grace period before. So I wasn't as worried about going over slightly. When I got the car, the customer service agent didn't mention that the grace period was 30 minutes. It is also not listed in the rental agreement form that I received and I signed when I took the car. On my return, I didn't authorize the charge for 2 days. I simply wanted a bill for the charge and I wanted to talk to Avis about it. Instead, my credit card was charged for 2 days without my authorization or my signature. Avis customer service stated that it was a legitimate charge. I have now complained to my credit card company about this charge. I am sure they have a better customer service than Avis! read more

Who is responsible for safety checks on the car before handing it over to renters? "We Try Harder", to do what get me killed! I rented a car to drive from San Diego to Tucson. After leaving Yuma and the sun had set, I realized I did not have any rear lights on the rental car. Basically I had 2 1/2 hours to drive in pitch black conditions to get through the desert before I arrived in Tucson. I could have been rear ended by any semi truck that passed me that night! When I returned the car, I had to argue to get a partial credit. When I asked corporate why they would not they would not refund my full amount, they said, "because I used the car". What was I supposed to do, abandon it in the desert and walk to Tucson? I rented a car because I did not trust my own car to make the trip, the last thing I expected to do is to pay for someone else's car to potentially get me killed! read more

I always use a company a few times before reviewing. This Avis is one of the poorer ones of the 30 or so I've been to. People who work here are not very courteous, don't try to help resolve any issues, and let the phone ring and ring. They are always out the door before the end of the day. Several reservations for Saturday afternoon (when they close at 3), person is already gone at 2:45. Do yourself a favor, if you book Avis go to the Avis on Torrey Pines in La Jolla a couple miles away. Jospeh goes above and beyond and provides great customer service. read more

Awful place. Had a CONFIRMED RESERVATION made at avis.com, but when I showed up the clerk said they didn't have the car I reserved, and that the only car available was a much bigger size which I would have to pay more for. It was a Sunday afternoon when no other car rental places were open so I was put in a difficult spot. The clerk's only suggestion...call the avis phone number, which connected me to someone in India whose only suggestion was to go to the airport to rent a car there. The clerk at this shop was completely indifferent to the situation. DO NOT rent from this outlet and maybe you should forget about avis alltogether, because reservations made on their website are meaningless and they will make no effort to help solve your problem. read more

One of the worst experiences I have ever had with a company. We arrived at the agency at the Venetian in Las Vegas. Our first complaint was that there was absolutely no one at the counter along with no sign posted when they would be back. So after 30 aggravating minutes, the representative decided to do her job and return to work. She was not very friendly and was very short with us. She did not explain many options that we could add on for the car. After all this, she informed us "we were receiving a free upgrade". When we walked to our car, we walked to a Nissan Versa. This was no upgrade. On top of the lies we were told, the car was not filled with gas. We took the car anyway and headed to San Diego. We woke up the next morning (New Years Day) and had planned to see a few sights before the car needed to be returned at our hotel in La Jolla. We went to the counter to confirm our time of return (which is suppose to be 30 minutes after the rental began in the first place). Well, the rep here tells us she is only open until noon and the car must be back by this time. There was absolutely NO notice of this at all and we were NEVER informed that Avis would be closing early. The rep was pretty rude and definitely showed she did not care much about our situation. After this, she went out to check the car. When she came back, she tried to charge our rental with gas money because the tank was 3/4 full (which was more full than the 1/2 tank we got when we picked up the car). She argued with me for about five minutes and I refused to pay any extra money, especially because we were returning at 9 am instead of the 4 pm we were expecting. Any way, we ended up taking a cab to what we had planned which was $100 total. I called Avis' costumer service number and they showed absolutely no interest in my complaint. I have rented from Hertz before and I know this would NEVER happen. Avoid Avis at all costs. They don't try harder. read more
