My family and I were involved in an auto collision last year. Aside from my vehicle being deemed a total loss, I was left with a back injury. The care that I received at Awender was great, but it only provided temporary relief. When my attorney finally settled this case, it was for far less than we had anticipated. My attorney assured me that she would negotiate my medical bills to help me pay for the continued care that I needed. Awender declined to adjust their outstanding bills, and would not sign the Lien Release, thus delaying my disbursement. I had no other choice but to pay them their full balance, so that they would release the lien. Due to this experience, I would not recommend them for any accident related treatments. read more

Awender Chiropractic Is amazing, and my go to spot when in town. I called in after finding them on Yelp, and they were able to see me same day. The front desk staff is very friendly and helpful. I came in for Spinal Decompression, and they have the latest technology that takes half the time as most other machines (10 min). Included with spinal Decompression is an adjustment! While waiting, I was able to sit in the relaxing massage chair. Dr. Awender adjusted my neck and back, and even adjusted my ankle, which I had sprained not too long ago. My ankle felt much better. Aside from the adjustments, I must comment on Dr Awender's doctor patient care. He is absolutely amazing and has such a great attitude and demeanor that puts patients at ease. It is obvious that he truly cares about his patients and helping people. I also came back for spot work massage, which loosened me right up. I've been going to Awender Chiropractic for two weeks, and so far I am very pleased by their service and the treatment I am receiving. Services: I was in a car accident where I was rear-ended at over 90mph. I am coming here for adjustments and massages. Dr. Joe and Dr. Veronica provide me pleasant adjustments. At each visit they do kind check-ins to see how I'm feeling and make sure I feel listened to. They are also very knowledgeable and teach me about my body. I am receiving massages from Tony and La Mar. Both are very professional and check in frequently before applying more or less pressure. It's only been a couple of weeks but my body is feeling better than when I first came in. Scheduling: The front desk receptionists are very kind - in person and over-the-phone. They make scheduling painless as they are flexible and able to work around tough schedules. Ambiance: They are operating during the pandemic and they follow proper precautions to keep everyone safe. They require masks in office, have plexi glass dividers, and sanitize their pens using UV light. They always play tasteful music with Hawaiian and Latin influence. The place is decorated with many plants and photos of their staff. I can tell they operate like a family. I will write an update when I finish my treatment. This review is for chiropractic care services, the treatment I received while recovering from foot and ankle injuries, and the custom-order shoe insoles over the past couple years. I highly recommend the practice, and their staff is excellent. 1. For chiropractic care, I was taken care of by Dr. Joe and Dr. Dan. Both are very knowledgeable and professional, as well as personal and caring. I had so many points of imbalance in my body over many years of wear and tear from the physical demands of extreme travel and past injuries. Over time, my spine and other problem areas came into alignment and I'm SO glad I went to Awender Chiro - I trust them immensely. 2. For my foot and ankle injuries, I went to Awender Chiro day after injuries - and they were extremely helpful in advising whether it was necessary or not to go to the hospital. They saved me a ton of money (unnecessary co-pays with primary care practitioner that wouldn't have told me anything new) as well as gave me valuable feedback for recovery. With Dr. Joe and Dr. Dan's help in the healing process, my injuries that could have been much worse - healed faster and in proper form because they paid close attention and monitored my progress so well. 3. I have collapsed arches (flat feet) that started to really hurt with longer stretches of high-impact exercise. When I told the doctors at Awender Chiro, they had my feet mapped on their machine and ordered custom orthopedic inserts that are shaped specifically to balance out my arch support. I love the inserts so much and it has made such a difference not only on my feet, but my back as well - and I don't want to wear any of my shoes without the inserts! Lastly, this makes a big difference as well - their entire staff (not just the doctors) are professional, competent, very helpful with any request. The environment is always positive and supportive, and it's a great family of people that I actually look forward to seeing whenever I go in for an office visit. Do not go to this place. I had a car accident and was given info to this place when I moved to the peninsula. More than a week before I went in I called and gave them all the information that they would need to be ready for my appointment: my lawyer's info, my previous chiro's info, date of the accident and my information. When I arrived they said they didn't have *any* of the information I had given them and had not communicated with either my previous chiro or my lawyer. Nothing. They didn't even have it in a file anywhere. (And remember I'd been getting treated for a year, so we have films and records and MRIs, etc). I asked them why they didn't have it and they said I never gave it to them which I found odd because this was the sole referral in this area and I know I did and I made notes about giving them this information and calling my former chiro to let them know they'd be reaching out. Basically either they lied to me or the original staff person didn't write it down. (There's a review on here of someone who says their staff is super unprofessional, and that is completely true - it's exhausting to deal with them) So I went ahead and saw the dr. The assistant doctor blamed me for not having the information she needed to do her exam an d mentioned that repeatedly. I told her that I had given the staff the info and she repeated that I must not have because they didn't have it. Seriously? So the doc came in and did an exam and told me that he wasn't sure if she should treat me because it had "been too long" since accident and I "should be healed by now." Yeah buddy, I think I should be healed too, that's why I'm coming to you. He asked for my records and I told him what happened and he said he'd get the records and let me know how to proceed. He told me it might not be "worth it" to treat me because the case might be out of money. This should have been a huge red flag!!! Mind you he hadn't looked at the films, or seen my history. He just assumed, whatever he assumed. Upon leaving I gave them all the information again - this time in writing. I let them know if they need any help getting records to please reach out to me and I'd help with communication, etc. They told me that they would reach out right away and let me know by the end of that next week. They told me they would call me when they got my records. I gave them my cell phone no and my email address to make sure they could reach me. I called them a few times over the next 3 WEEKS. I got no response. Finally Awendar calls me and I ask what's going on and why it took so long. He said he doesn't, "chase people. I called your lawyer and he never called me back." He called once. And I asked him that he hadn't called me though, because I always get responses from the lawyer and told him that I'd help them if the needed anything. And his response, "Well maybe you need a different provider who can meet your communication needs." He also told me that he didn't want to run up a big chiro bill that I couldn't pay. Yes, I definitely do need a different chiro. But if one phone call to his client is more than he can do, then how could he possibly do PI (personal injury) cases? Or even deal with clients at all? More than that though, he assumed that I couldn't or wouldn't pay out of pocket for chiropractic care. He didn't ask me what I wanted or even tell me his rates, or have any kind of communication about care, duration, price, anything. He literally made up a story that I couldn't afford it and so refused care on my behalf without my consent without seeing any records. That is absolutely not ok. Basically, this place has terrible communication and the doctor feels entitled to do nothing and no follow up and make decisions for you without your consent. Do not go to this place. Also they have signs for weight loss products on every wall and in every room and their refusal to do anything came after I made it clear that I did not want to be pitched weight loss. Other warnings: this place also tries to make you sign statements that say that they will not discount their services in a PI case for negotiating with insurance and they expect their full (inflated) fees (I found the fees in the paperwork). And they try to make you sign over your rights with your med pay and have their case take precedence over anything your lawyer says or any other providers. I am so happy I went to see Dr. Awender. My husband and I have been ttc for two years and I had heard that chiropractic could help. I contacted a couple other offices and they seemed like they just wanted to take my money because they wanted to treat myself and my husband. I went to Dr Awender and they had the $69 new patient evaluation special so I got that for myself and asked if my husband should do it too, he said no let's check you out first. After my X-ray it turned out I have scoliosis in my lower back and the one vertebrae that was hurting was pinching the nerves that lead to my reproductive system! I immediately started treatment and I was pregnant in 1 month!! Now I am not saying this will happen to you, everyone is different, but I wanted to share my story for all the women who are struggling to get pregnant and no one ever mentions chiropractic and all the benefits of healing your back. I've been a patient at Doctor Awender's office now for about 2 years now and I can honestly say they have changed my life. I've been meaning to review this place for the past year simply because it has been the greatest experience in my life....and yes...chiropractic care does work better than modern meds at times. A year ago, I was at the Peninsula Festival in San Mateo and was walking around checking out cool stuff. All of a sudden, this lady comes up to me and asks me if I had back problems or have trouble sleeping at night. I was like...yeah...how you know? She simply stated I had bad posture and told me the normal things people do when they have bad posture....folding their arms when they listen attentively...which I was doing. She quickly set me up on this "free" evaluation at Dr. Joe's office. Now, me being me, I was very skeptical....I never liked doctors...I always think they are there to just milk you for you visits and give you second-rated drugs to keep you coming back for more visits. But looking at the coupon...I was like...oh...X-ray and evaluation for less than $20...why the hell not. I went there for an evaluation and got my X-ray on my spinal cord and I was like....what in the world is wrong with my spine...it was twisted and crooked in ways that made me realize that I am screwed....basically I had a spine of a 50 year old. Dr. Joe insisted he can fix me and through a series of chiropractic care and conditioning...I'll be back to normal. I went ahead and try my luck with Dr. Joe...simply because you can just tell by his tone of his voice and how he answer every little question I had for him...as I described all the symptoms I've been having (waking up with both my arms numb, back going out twice in 5 years, getting tired if I stand up too long, and slouching). He said he can adjust my spine and get rid of those symptoms......ok....we'll see! I went in for an injury, and Dr. Awender did a great job at repairing that injury with getting adjusted. However, after my x rays he offered to adjust other parts of my spine. Trusting him, I agreed to this but these new adjustments created new problems for me. I went in again and explained this to him, but he insisted on trying the adjustment a different way. Reluctantly and gullibly, I went ahead and let him adjust me again. Letting him adjust me those 2 times in the place where I didn't have any problems in the first place was the worst mistake I made. It has now been several several months, and I am still having a big problem with the area he adjusted. I wake up every morning and go to bed at night uncomfortable, and depressed. I am just beside myself. I thought by now the problem would be gone but it is definitely now a chronic issue. read more

Even their volume-purchase pack is too expensive now--before you even factor in the fact that they get your money upfront. Much better to just have someone come do in-home massage, which is more convenient and which cuts out the Awender middle-man! I took our 3 year old pit bull Nala here recently for a few alignments and must say this place/ Dr. Joe is amazing! Nala had fallen into our back yard pool a couple weeks ago and pulled her self out on her own. When she pulled herself over the side of the pool she seemed to have twisted her back a bit. She was fine that evening but woke up two days later unable to stand or walk. She was shaking uncontrollably and very unsteady. We took her to an emergency vet where they said she has a permanent condition which they assumed was her spine or other Neurological issues. I let the vet know that she had fallen in our pool and that maybe she was sore or threw out her back the vet said there was no way that was why she couldn't walk. They were certain these issues would be permanent and that after a $4000 MRI and medication that Nala May improve but would likely have issues with seizures, bladder leaks, difficulties walking, standing, eating etc. They said she may only get worse and not improve our entire family was in fear of losing our sweet pup. We kept Nala in the cage for 3 days to keep her from falling down. I heard of Dogs going to the Chiropractor but had no idea if this would help with Nala's condition. After staying in the cage for three days Nala was able to walk again but you can noticeably see a difference in her posture. I took her to Dr. Joe, where he knew as soon as he saw her that her back needed to be aligned. He was very sweet and friendly with Nala regardless of her breed. After 3 visits Nala is back to her usual self. Happy and running all over the place. read more

*** Update Nov 2016 I've reached my goal of losing 45 lbs (in 5 months), and I feel empowered and exited about the program and my success. *** I'm so glad I have come across the Ideal Protein diet, and grateful to yelp reviewers for that! I was on the diet first for 3 months at a different office, before I transferred to Awender Chiropractics, and lost 30 lbs. I'm now in the second stage of the diet. I've lost about 10 lbs since I started a month ago, and I'm close to the finishing line!! I've been more than happy with the support I get from the AC's coach Irene! She is friendly, knowledgeable, and supportive! So what brought me to try IP is that I've been successful in the past by losing weight on Weight Watchers, but it took almost two years to lose 30 lbs. And with stresses of daily life, I've gained all that weight back. I could not bring myself to do the counting again, and felt like I needed a structured and well thought through program, which I can follow, that does not involve appetite suppressants, and provides adequate support. Ideal Protein has been all that. The program is well organized and based on research. It puts emphasis on eating high quality proteins, lots of veggies, drinking lots of water, and drastically reducing carbs. You'd have to eat some of the IP foods, and some of your own (mostly veggies and proteins). Originally, I felt not so sure about the foods from the powder (you'd need to dilute them with water for a meal, shake or a soup), but they are delicious and very filling. The IP foods containing easily digestible protein allow you to not feel hungry at all, which is a unique quality of this program, and, imo, one of the reasons for its success. I'm a vegetarian, and the counselors told me I would be losing a bit slower than meat eaters, but I found myself steadily losing 2-3 pounds a week. The program is doable although it does require determination and consistent effort. The main things that helped me were sticking with the protocol (you need to be strict), eating frequently, watching the Ideal Protein video clips for support, and checking in with my coach. I'm happy about this program! It was a big investment but it was all worth it for the results so great, and for the sense of empowerment it gave. As a side note, the diet successfully healed me of inflammations, and stomach issues, I had experienced while on my standard food regimen. read more

Dr. Joe Awender is among the best Chiropractors in the area! He is a very caring Doctor who adjusts with his hands and doesn't solely rely on machines like other Doctors. He comes from a family of about 15+ Chiropractors (father, brothers, etc). Consider yourself lucky if you can be adjusted by him. I am not easy to adjust and very picky when it comes to Chiropractors. My husband and I saw several Chiropractors before getting a recommendation to Dr. Joe. Dr. Joe is the BEST! I came to him once about 4 years ago when my back went out on me. I was in so much pain and was referred to him from a previous church Pastor. When I came in his staff was so so nice, respectful, and helpful and walked and talked me through what would take place, like an evaluation, adjustments, finances, etc. When I met Dr. Joe I was blown away by how nice and understanding he was and always making sure I was ok and comfortable. I stopped coming for awhile, however found myself back after my back started acting up again Recently and well still the same great Dr. And staff I know!!
