I've been coming to Nick at Athens Chiropractic for over 20 years. Pains me to say that. Ha. Ha. Seriously, he runs a beat-of-class operation. They have a full staff to take care of all the scheduling, billing and insurance needs. In addition, he runs a group of therapists for specialty work. They have on-site massage by apt with a CPM too. When you arrive Denise greets you with a smile and your first name. She's great. Then, when you're assigned a treatment room, they have a trainee come loosen up your back and shoulders with a 5 min massage. Then Nick comes in. By then I'm relaxed and the adjustments go easy. They have a great process: first I get a massage to loosen up my muscles, then Dr. Rivera gives me an adjustment, then I get another massage and ice if needed. Jiu-Jitsu practitioners, Dr. Mario will keep you training at a high level! I have been a patient of Dr. Marios for several years. I get a common neck strain that he has always taken care of. He has helped me keep training Jiu-Jitsu and, if you are a mixed martial art practitioner, he is who you want to go to. Outside of Dr. Mario's mad skills, I can't say enough positive things about this place. I have always felt welcomed here and taken care of. They are not a quick pop it and crack it, send you on your way. They take time to diagnose your injury and provide the proper treatment (massage, adjustment, exercises) to get you back on the mat. Dr Mario is the doctor for you! I found this place because I was struggling with lower back pain it was in network for my insurance. I have been going here for 5 weeks now. I come in, talk to my chiropractor (Dr. Mario) about whatever has been bugging me and then he has a massage therapist massage me, then I get adjusted and then I get iced and massaged again. The whole experience is an hour long; my former chiropractor was 5 minutes! This is super thorough. I really recommend Jacob--I think it's his name for accupressure massage (I was told he is in on Friday's and Saturday's). Before I started coming here, I had done physical therapy with little to no improvement in my back pain. However after coming here, I have substantially improved. Dr. Mario also sent me some exercises to do as YouTube videos such that I can ensure that I am doing them properly. Overall, a great place. I truly enjoy coming here! read more

Longer Review - I've been coming here for a few years, when I first came in I was suffering from computer neck due to the adjustment into a more sedentary life. I used to not care for chiropractors as I felt like I was always being rushed in and out within five minutes. With Dr. Mario and his team, I feel like they give me all the attention in the world they need. Over the past couple years, I've worked closely with Dr. Mario on my posture and various body aches to feel comfortable saying that I am of a much better body than when I started seeing him. Terrible. I went to see Dr. Athens for a frozen shoulder. He did a few things like massage and a few adjustments. He also told me that I needed Xrays. Did not inform me of the costs. I checked out with a bill of over$1000. He also pushes all these supplements from Metagenics without even asking me. I'm sure he gets a hefty commission for selling these products. I did not notice any pain relief whatsoever!!! What a SCAM! read more

Nick Athens is awesome! I just had my second adjustment with Nick Athens and extremely pleased to say, "I am a believer" and extremely happy with the treatment. Little background, I was very skeptical about chiropractic after suffering two very bad adjustments several years ago from a doctor in Burlingame, which was my first and only experience until now. After having painful sciatic/hip issues on and off for a few years and recent shoulder pain where I couldn't lift my arm, I finally listened to my son, brother and good friend whom have all been going to Nick Athens for years and been pain free and extremely happy and acquiesced to go see him. Reluctantly, but with much support and encouragement from my son I saw Nick Athens. He was very understanding of me being very nervous and took things slowly with treatment. The treatment was multifaceted and took about 2 1/2 hours. I felt much better when I left. Today was the second treatment and happy to say I feel very good. The treatment isn't painful and I feel my mobility and movements are very fluid. My shoulder range of motion is double what it was after I left today and I can tell I am on the road to recovery. My hip/sciatic feels great and pain free. Nick is patient, funny, informative, and offers reassurance for nervous customers! Dr Nick Athens is without a doubt the best in his field.. I've returned after being away for 16 years..( many reasons why ). But where I am in life I just couldn't deny that I was in need of chiropractic care again to have a better quality of life. And as I write this, it's been approximately 11 hrs after my 1st appt ...exam and 2/X-rays .. and adjustments later I'm beyond thrilled with the outcome and feeling 99.9% better.. and I'm sure I'll be 100% after my next adjustment!! I've been coming to this place for more than a year now. Some visits are better than others. My friend referred his chiropractor to me and I enjoyed several of my sessions. My doctor's business has been picking up since I first saw him in November 2016 and I fully understand that he may be coming to my session a bit late. There are few times (3-4 times) I was waiting in the room 20 minutes past my scheduled time and the session was only 15 minutes. People at the back area (Gym) sometimes can be a little be laid back but they still know what they are doing. Just need to have proper communication with them. I mean, overall it's a pretty good place for your session and visit. But sometimes might be a miss due to the busy schedule. End of the day just needs to communicate with the doctor about all the concerns you have and hope the next visit would just get better! read more

This is the in-n-out, rack-em-and-crack-em kind of place. On my few visits to Athens Chiropractic, i was done in 15 minutes almost every time, and I felt like cattle. I'm not saying they are quacks (I'm a big fan of chiropractic care.) They just remind me way too much of a factory assembly line. I've been spoiled by much more attentive, personal service and have since moved on to another Chiropractor. I'm sure they have helped people. If you are looking for orthopedics, don't go here! I have had experience with foot levelers in the past, Howe the combination of the orthodontics and this office was a nightmare! After waiting for my orthotics for over 3 months and being in pain the entire time, I had to go somewhere else to get custom orthotics (in 2 weeks). My foot pain is now much better So.....over 3 months without any foot leveler shoes which work! No refund of any of the $700 charge. Constant pain in my foot. Dr. Athens is changing my life. It is in present progressive form because I am still in the middle of the treatment, but even after one treatment, the change was so big I was just going "oh wow, oh my gawd" in his office. My fitness teacher sent me to Dr. Athens as she noticed my back was really out (I was in pain but didn't realize it was that bad). I was suffering from lower back pain from sneezing too much. I have been suffering from this allergy for over 3 months, and sneezing etc. has taken its toll on my back and other areas of my body. Amazingly, after just one treatment, my lower back pain was gone, just like that. And I could finally touch my toes which I could never do for years! Even my sinuses seem to be getting better, as if the oxygen is finally flowing into where it's supposed to. Dr. Athens is very cool, down to earth and friendly. The office is very well organized and beautifully maintained. It just feels good when you walk into the place, and it's very important that you feel good entering a doctor's office... I have another session tomorrow and will be coming back for maintenance thereafter. I LOVE Dr. Athens. I'm now 24, I've seen him since I was 12!!! -- I'll never forget when I came into what's now their old office with my neck not even being able to move after some rough housing with my big brother. He was very gentle and for someone that young who's never even heard of a chiropractor back then, he was perfect. As the years passed my family and I saw him about once a week to once every other week. -- I got into another accident this time by snow boarding... About 10 years ago, I went to see a chiropractor and I swore that I would never see one again. But Athens is an awesome place to go because they listen to you and fix you literally. I started going when I started having some tingling down my left arm and I knew that I was in trouble. Dr. Patrignani is totally awesome in every way. He takes pride in helping people feel good again and really takes the time to make sure you are back in feeling great again. Now his assistant, Karen, is incredible too. She does excellent deep tissue massage and she knows how to handle you in different situations. For example, when I fell, she didn't do a deep tissue but gently massaged me. It is people like Karen that make a huge difference in this world! Thanks Karen! I have built a nice relationship with this office and it feels like home to me! I've been doing brazilian jiu jitsu for about a year and six months now. During one of my classes I ended up hurting my lower back. I went and saw my other chiropractor, who was my first chiropractor, and he adjusted me. I still was in pain 3 weeks later even after being adjusted. I thought maybe I would have to go see a medical doctor until someone at my gym suggested I call Dr. Mario. I made an appt and him and his team went to work as soon as I came into the office. They x-rayed me, which the other place didn't, and they also had a sports therapist there working with me and on me. They told me what was wrong and showed it showed in the x-rays that one hip was higher than the other. Mario knew exactly what he needed to do in order to fix the problem. Within a week I was already feeling better. Dr. Mario and his team are great! He is my go to body mechanic. They provide me with helpful tips on how to prevent this next time. I listen to them and do what they say because I don't like being in pain. I continue to go to Dr. Mario even after being fixed. I feel stronger, healthier, and have more knowledge about my own body. Dr. Nick Athens is by far the best chiropractor ever!! I have been going to him for the past 5 years after he found my broken neck. I broke C1 and C2 in four places in a cheerleading accident and the medic on sight said it was muscle spasms so we thought okay let's go to the chiropractor! Went to doctor Nick, he took x-rays and found it! He is the chiropractor for the 49ers!! Every time I go I feel two inches taller. You can always call them when they open and usually they can squeeze you in which has been very nice! I can't say enough good things about this operation. You are first set up with a PT for massage or loosening up then Dr. Athens for the adjustment & you are back with a PT for stretching, strengthening exercises or a roll out. My first experience was with a lower back issue that was nearly cured with one visit. What immense relief. Just recently my GP diagnosed me with shoulder impingement and gave me a prescription for anti inflammatories. Pain continued, no improvement. Time passed & I got to thinking "maybe Dr. Athens could help" not thinking of him first because it was a shoulder issue (not back). One treatment later & what an improvement. my neck...my back... I came here about 2 years ago when i was having some back issues--the chiropractor always scared me for some reason, but I had heard good things so I came in. I have been coming back ever since. I try to go on a monthly basis, and have Dr. Jerry give me adjustments. However, sometimes I skip a month and I can really feel the difference. They provide a pretty deep tissue massage prior to the adjustment and the appointments usually last about 20-30 minutes total. I have limited experience with chiropractic care however desperation is a great motivator so after 3 months of lower back and glut muscle pain I started asking around about chiropractic care. Two people recommended Nick Athens so I made an appointment to see him. Nick is very experienced (he works on football players), easy going and has a very good staff of massage therapists. At Athens, chiropractic care has 3 elements: massage, home exercise and adjustments. Each adjustment is preceded by a massage. There is also a small gym on site and each time I go I have had one of the massage therapists do stretching work on me as part of the visit. I also have exercises to do at home twice a day. Dr. Athens "prescribes" the exercises based on what he notices/observes during your adjustment. I went 3X a week the first two weeks; It may sound like quite a bit of money . However, it's been worth every cent because I am feeling so much better - and actually did from visit one. If you are a bit hesitant about chiropractic, this office is a good one to try if you want to try something alternative to traditional medicine. Though you may be skeptical, I guarantee you will soon find yourself a convert. read more

I'd seen 2 chiropractors around the Bay Area for chronic pain before seeing Dr. (Jerry) Patrignani at Athens. The first two were the type of doctors who give chiropractic medicine a bad name--mostly because they didn't listen to what my problems were. Now I see Dr. Patrignani pretty regularly about every 3 weeks (which is what my insurance covers) and he keeps my back in tip-top shape. As a mom of a toddler, I'm always running around and carrying my kid and asking my back to perform in ways it shouldn't! After my initial consultation he set me up with some physical therapists in the office to show me some simple exercises to strengthen my back. A double bonus is that with each session you get a bonus 5 to 10 minute warm-up massage, by Karen, who does great Swedish and deep-tissue work. Hurts so good. :o) read more

This place feels like an assembly line, crack-em pop-em kind of place. Barely any personal interest in treating the cause of your pains. They treat the symptoms and when there isn't any improvement, the increase the frequency of visits to still do nothing to treat the root cause of the pain. I am the first to give someone credit where credit is due on yelp. I've been going here on and off for over 20 years. Dr. Athens is a god send magician!! What he did for my neck after 3 weeks of not sleeping and in constant pain was amazing. Turns out it was one of my ribs that was impinged that was causing all types of issues on my left side. He cracked my left side and it was the loudest crack I've heard in my life followed by the worst pain for 10 seconds but after that I was cured!! He's the best in his field and works on the 49ers and many sports figures. I won't even set foot in another Chiropractors office and waste my money because nobody else compares. I moved from the Bay quite a few years ago and it's worth the drive to be adjusted correctly. Not only is Dr. Athens personable you can tell he legitimately enjoys his job. Dr. Athens gave me the quality of healthy living! I was referred to Dr. Athens 15 years ago when I could barely walk and had a tremendous amount of pain from protrusion of a disc in my lower back. Plus I was 12 week pregnant. If I were to follow a traditional medicine I'd ended up with a back surgery. Needless to say I was terrified to loose my baby! Dr. Athens fixed my back after a few visits. He has been taking care of me and my children since they were newborns. It's very important to take care of your back and joins prophylactically as part of wellness to prevent problems later on. I started at Athens a while back because I'm very athletic and need chiropractic care to correct back issues. First off, the adjustments are top notch. No question that you will get a solid, customized adjustment that will instantly make you feel better and keep you that way. I opted for a concentrated set of adjustments in a short window and now I'm back on track. On top of the adjustments, I was pleasantly surprised to get mini massages before my adjustments (while I wait for the doctor). Above and beyond! REALLY NICE! After the adjustments they move me to their physical therapy room (like a small gym) where therapists do some more targeted massage and in my case they've even recommended a few stretches that I've added into my workout routine. Again, REALLY NICE! The not-so-good? At new patient intake I made the mistake of ticking the box indicating that I'm interested in nutrition. This is a separate *upsell* department and their approach is to scan your hand on a mouse-like device where an app (called Zyto) diagnoses how well your organs are functioning. (Yes, from placing your hand on a mouse!) From there they recommended tinctures, magnets and supplements. In my case, the machine determined that my kidneys were struggling, however, I'd just had a complete physical to join a new employer so I knew there was nothing wrong with my kidneys. If herbal tinctures and magnets sound good to you then you might go along with this sort of thing but I'd encourage you to Google "Zyto efficacy" for the scientific analysis of this machine/app. VERY DISAPPOINTING that they can't offer an R.D. to give patients proper nutrition counseling. Honestly, this sort of questionable and costly add-on service is what gives chiropractic a bad name. Plus, this part of the clinic seems so out of place in what is otherwise a very professional, competent clinical environment. I don't like finishing on a negative so I just want to reiterate my complete and utter POSITIVE EXPERIENCE with the chiropractic care at Athens. read more

I went to Athens Chiropractic after reading these great reviews. I like the facility and every other staff member I encountered was extremely friendly, helpful, and kind. That being said... I've been to many chiropractors over the years, and I have several gripes with the way Dr. Jerry conducts business: - He did NOT carefully explain to me what he was going to do during the adjustment. He just went for it. I felt totally unprepared, and didn't even have the opportunity to ask questions. - He flat-out told me that surgery was NOT the right option for my back problem (scoliosis). How does he know that? He's not a spine surgeon, nor is he an expert on scoliosis. To make that kind of judgment call with no supporting evidence, after having GLANCED at a single x-ray of my upper back, is unprofessional. - After my first adjustment, I soon began to experience excruciating back pain - at least 2-3x as bad as what caused me to seek help in the first place. In fact, it was so bad that even Vicodin wasn't controlling the pain. I also felt numbness/tingling in my arm, and it was painful to breath. He did nothing to help this other than suggesting I perform some exercises. He didn't even seem concerned, simply telling me that I most likely "popped a rib out." WTF?! Needless to say, I am scared silly that he did more harm than good during my two visits. I won't be going back. read more
