Azeri Cuisine: Azerbaijan, Russian and Central Asian food.
    Alexander K.

This is a very small but nice place, and the food is truly home made, of a very high quality. I was born in Central Asia, spent most of my life in Russia, and now I live in the UK, and I am missing the tasty food of my youth and childhood. Here, at the Azeri Cuisine, they manage to do pelmeni exactly as my grandmother used to do them! And their Olivier salad is exactly how it should be. Since I discovered this place, I am having a delicious food every lunch.

It has to be some of the best Indian food I've had outside of India. The little complimentary chai while you wait in line is such a thoughtful touch and really sets the tone. Even though there was a queue, it moved surprisingly quickly. Once inside, the service was warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. As for the food... every dish we ordered was outstanding. Rich flavors, perfectly balanced spices, and you can tell a lot of care goes into every plate. Honestly, I don't think you can go wrong with anything on the menu. If you're in London, don't overthink it. Just get in line, enjoy the chai, order what sounds good, and have a fantastic meal. We'll definitely be back the next time we're in town.

In my opinion, there are 2 main things to know about Dishoom: it's an Indian restaurant that is a chain, with 11 locations worldwide. The food is really good for a chain, bit it doesn't begin to come close to a restaurant that takes care of of its individual customers. Walking in, there's lots of energy. People are having a good time, there's no question. We were seated upstairs where there must have been around 40 tables. All of the staff are walking around in a hurry, cause everything here is in a hurry. The intention is to get you our in less than an hour. They want you in, through, and out. I saw this with multiple tables. Our server Yanko came to our table quite promptly and helped us make selections, both for food and drinks. For the first time in my experience eating in a restaurant, the appetizers arrived minutes before our cocktails. They came so fast that we didn't even think it was our order. And then moments after the drinks arrived, all of the main dishes and sides were placed on the table. With no way to keep anything warm. All of this with 10 minutes of placing the order. I appreciate prompt service, but this takes it to an absurd extreme. Our appetizers included the house Chaat and prawn koliwada. I enjoyed the prawns more but the flavors were facile, not close to what I expect and have enjoyed in excellent Indian restaurants. The main dishes were the Goan monkfish curry and Sali Goan. These were also just OK, absolutely nothing special. The cheese naan was soggy, though the flavor was good. This was an unacceptable texture for a naan. Dessert was Basmati Kheer, flavorful Basmati rice with fruit compote on top. In between and unneeded, was a thin layer of creme brulee. I did enjoy my tea: ginger, lemon and honey and my wife liked her mint tea. I do not know the restaurant scene in Edinburgh, we've been here for 4 days. But this is just not a place I'deven consider returning to. It's really a factory that feeds folks, not a restaurant that cares for its customers. The business model had been optimized to maximize income with lots of throughput. What's been almost completely lost in my opinion, is the heart and soul of the dining experience.

Here's what we ordered and enjoyed most: Thyme kellaj: crisp, filled with delish zaatar, perfect for me Hummus: creamy dream, perfectly balanced Labneh: thick, creamy, dreamy. Chicken Fallouj: huge portion. Perfectly cooked, no dryness and full of flavor. Went very well with the labneh. Falafel: crispy, BIG, but not as big on the flavor as I was expecting. Did like that it came with a tahini sauce and pickled turnips which cut the heaviness. Actually wouldn't get again because the other items filled me right up. The only "miss" of the meal for me. Passion fruit martini is a MUST get for you fruity drink people. Really tasted like passion fruit. The old fashioned is a miss for my husband -- he couldn't explain why but he just wasn't into it. Please note that this restaurant is in a smaller space so you probably would need a reservation on weekends.

The beans (foul) were my favorite. The baba ganoush lacked the smoky flavor that I usually love about it. But everything else was tasty and hit the spot after a day of playing tourist in London. Service was swift and nice. I would certainly come back again.

I admit I made the classic mistake of not realising that less is almost always more. Rather than getting a simple shake - strawberry, peanut butter and banana, Oreo cookie - I plunged into a candy bar filled ice cream disaster that left me feeling ill three sips in. I have since learned my lesson. The sandwiches - burgers, chicken, etc - are sized to the max so bring your appetite. They also do take away so if you want to run with your shake or sandwich (i.e. eat in a closet so no one can see you decimating a day's worth of calories in one go) it's pretty hassle free to do so.

We got nachos to share and I just had a few bites, it was definitely nothing special. For my main, I was feeling a burger, so got the double cajun chicken burger.. I bit into it and the chicken was still a bit pink.. Definitely not a good sign and wasn't flavoursome at all. The Mexican vegetables I got with it, was more like salsa with.. Well I have no idea, but certainly wasn't what I imagined when I ordered vegetables.. If I'm going back, it's probably for a milkshake to take away, let's face it!

It's the best! We decided upon this place after a pool tournament at the nearby hurricane rooms. Having both been knocked out in the first round, it was quite a fortunate circumstance as we wouldn't have discovered this place otherwise! Upon entering the place was well lit and clean. It wasn't in the least bit smoky unlike some Mangal's that absolutely leave you smelling of charcoal. There were only two other tables taken so I thought it might have been a wrong move... Our orders taken, straight away we're brought the complimentary turkish bread and dips that all mangals normally serve. Quite often this bread is cold and chewy, or given with a nasty dip that smells a bit off. Not here. The bread was warm and super yummy, and a good portion of it too! I absolutely stuffed myself on this because the dips, of which I don't know the names, were so good! Remembering that we still had out mains to come, I stopped. But at this point I was around 50% full! Our mains come out and boy are the portions gigantic. Lots of meat, extremely fresh looking and tasting salad and your choice of fries or rice. With a thin pitta as the base. There was oil in the doner chicken, but not as much as you normally find. It was very tasty. The chilli sauce, wasn't that hot, but the flavours were full and a welcome addition to the slightly charred moist chicken. As we were about to ask for the bill, (note: Earlier to this I had heavily complimented the staff on how good the food was) they were exceptionally gracious in offering us some complimentary turkish tea and delights. That was a nice touch and perfect end to a perfect meal. I honestly felt like a guest in somebody's home, as all the staff from the cooks to the waiting staff were super nice and friendly. This is apparently a chain (same owners), with another in Shoreditch which I've visited. But it's nothing close in either food quality or staffing at this branch. So it's fair to say they only share the name (along with many dozens across London) Give this place a visit if you're around King's Cross Station and looking for a quick bite. For just over a tenner, you're sure to leave stuffed and more importantly happy. Now isn't that what life is about.
