I was hoping to find an activity to do with a friend I hadn't seen in a while and found a Paint &…read moreSip night at Lakes & Legends brewing out on by Your Bearded Artist. It was very easy to book online and I loved that there weren't any extra fees. You pay for your ticket online and that's it - no extra taxes, handling fees, whatever. Just the ticket price. Jeremy got to the brewery before the event started and started setting everything up. When you bought your ticket, you could let him know if you needed extra accommodation, which was a nice touch. Everyone attending got a big ol canvas, a plate of paint, 3 paintbrushes, a cup of water (for the paint, y'all, get your own drinks), a paper towel, and an easel. And a cute yellow apron!! Every station was all set up for us and all we had to do was pick a seat. Love it! I was getting kind of nervous looking at the painting we were going to be loosely recreating until Jeremy gave his schpiel about how we were here to be inspired by the painting, not just recreating it. "You're here to have fun!" And have fun we did. Jeremy is witty, funny, kind, artsy, and so helpful. He shared about his life and cracked jokes throughout the night. He made us all feel really comfortable in creating and enjoying the process. I loved how he did the painting step by step with us and gave us fun ideas for how we could branch off if we were feeling creative, like adding UFOs. One of my favorite parts was the glitter we added at the end. I chose some pink glitter to go on top of the red nebulas in the sky I'd made and my little magpie heart has never been happier. Cleanup was easy as pie and Jeremy offered to take pics of everyone after we were done. I loved it and would love to come back for another class -- Jeremy does it all, paint your dog, chunky knit blanket, lots of different landscapes, you name it! I definitely recommend signing up for any of his classes or hiring him for a private party.

And, you do this in what many might call a class, but Board and Brush owner Jenn Fleury told me to think of as a concert or other live event. (This sounds fun - but, unfortunately, it didn't bode well for me or other guests - I want to give you a helpful tip to navigate some policies at Board and Brush. But, more about that will come later.) Your experience with Board & Brush will begin online - there's a website and people choose the date of a pre-set event. Then, you choose what you want to create. There is a set price for this experience - approximately $73 - so any item can be selected. Some items (look for the icon) cost approximately $5 more. I would have appreciated some lower-cost tiers. I chose a project and set myself into motion with the party for my friend, making reservations online. the instructions said that staff would assist with the techniques and color choices to coordinate with my space. Then, not long after this, I needed to cancel. I called first and also sent an email, hoping to get a quick assist. The Board and Brush response: A future-use code and a note, saying, "No refunds." I wrote back explaining more and asking for a cash refund. The response: A link to the "policies" page, and an explanation that workshops are like concerts - and, just like concerts, they did not do cash refunds. So, I hope someone else can do it better. I have an unwanted "credit" and a business owner not offering true help. With this in mind, I don't want the Board and Brush experience now. Thanks for taking the time to read through!

I've been intrigued by the Paint Nite concept for a while now, and I'm glad I finally was able to…read moreexperience it. The first thing to know is DONT PAY FULL PRICE. These are always on sites like Groupon, and you can probably find coupon codes online for their website as well. The event I attended was at the Big Thrill Factory in Minnetonka, and due to the ambient noise from the rest of the building, I wouldn't highly recommend this venue. But the food looked good, and the wine/beer options were reasonable. There were parts of the instruction that I thought went too fast, and other parts that went way too slow. The beginning was a little stressful for me, in part bc I've never painted on canvas before. I am a pretty crafty person in general, but my skills are more from years of summer camp. Our instructor had music playing, and at times it was distracting and very loud. She also kept encouraging us to drink, which I didn't mind but I think some people will find excessive. Our instructor was cheerful, but there are things I think she should have repeated or emphasized more (like using a lot of water mixed with the paint for the first step, and how to do blending better. I have no idea how to do a lot of shading, or work with light) If the idea of painting appeals to you at all, I think you'd have a good time at a Paint Nite event, no matter what your skill level. I can see why some people go again and again! We were there for almost 2 1/2 hours. I wish she hadn't taken such a long break before the final part of the painting, bc I would have liked to stay longer to add more details during the last step, or allow parts of my canvas to dry before adding more things on top.

Initially, we went online together to pick a date with a painting subject that we liked. I think it would be fun to paint with friends, but even better if I actually want to hang up the art piece on my wall! Paint Nite seems to hold all of their classes in restaurant party rooms. There were about 40 people in the class held at Andiamo in Apple Valley. We had our own server in the back private room for drinks or food. Drinking was encouraged, as that likely loosens up some of the anxious people who want to paint perfectly! People were encouraged to use their creative spirit and paint what they feel in the mood to make. Our instructor was named Lisa and she did a wonderful job. She took her time to go through the steps slowly, offered help as needed and had some music playing while the paint dried. Bring a few friends, have a wild time and go home with a handmade creation!
