The newer staff (manager Marla, and possible assistant manager Calvin, bartender Tyler & Aaron, front desk Paul & Mark, & housekeepers Margie and family, plus cook Aj) are very sweet and friendly people. Always nice smiles and warm welcomes that makes you feel right at home! I myself no longer drink alcohol but do remember many many many good memories in this building and will never forget the friendships I have made along the way. It's a 3 in 1 business, it is a motel/cafē/bar all in one. It's the perfect hide out/getaway that will leave you with an amazing experience in my opinion. Hunters come and book rooms weeks in advance every year starting from Oct 1st to Dec 1st. That is their busiest time of year bar none. But they are very loyal and return every year, over the years I've built friendships & memories with alot of them also. I miss that alot :( but my journey at this business has unfortunately ended do to lack of sobriety. I miss it everyday and wish things turned out differently and that is the honest truth. Go and support these people and you will not regret it I promise. You will have memories for years to come! I usually look for good breakfast places when I stop overnight in my travels, and Valley City didn't have any listed for just breakfast. We shared a caramel roll and some coffee to start. Now, the coffee isn't anything to write home about, standard cafe fare. But the caramel roll was a magnificent example of decedent small town goodness, and at $2.15/ea, we took some home for the next day. The breakfast platters were solid. Over easy was over easy. Hashbrowns crispy. Toast, toasted and buttery. The omelettes are well done as well, fluffy eggs surrounding a generous portion of fresh prepped goodness. All told for two of us and to-go rolls, we spent about $20. The Hunter Cafe and Bakery is a nice little gem well worth the 35 minute drive from Fargo. The service is kind and personable. People's tickets are marked by names (not ours, because we were visitors). The whole place feels like a beating heart of a community. I was greeted friendly, immediately and asked if I would be dining. I replied, "No. Just an espresso. In fact I would like a Traditional Italian Macchiato (TIM)." (I lived in Italy for 5 months) The attendant asked if I would like a 16 or 20oz, at which point I explained to her what a TIM was. She assured me that would be no problem to guesstimake. 2 minutes later I was served the BEST TIM I've had since living in Italy in 1993! The espresso, the temperature, amounts of foam & steamed milk were all perfect! Later I called 517 to express to the (Owner I think) how amazing the Macchiato was, but instead unwittingly spoke to the barista that MADE my TIM. Needless to say, she got choked up & thanked me profusely. I told her, "Don't ever forget how to make that! You've nailed it!" So, thank you to unknown barista girl. If you knew how to make it...good on you! If it was the result of an "educated guess" (I assume) it was a stroke of divinely inspired genius! I used to walk to this building over 50 years ago to get chocolate covered frozen bananas. . I was VERY impressed with the friendly greeting, great menu and a coffee shop besides. TRF NEEDED this place! Food was great and fresh bakery goods were coming out of the oven. PLEASE try them and support them. Would be great to see this place thrive there and be available for many years.
