If you want to serve hot food hot, be firm about the time. The fruit platter was disappointing. Half was inedibly unripe melon. I suggest you go elsewhere for fruit. There was a platter of very good mixed pastries. The cookie platter had only one kind of unappealing cookie that went mostly uneaten. On the whole, I would certainly use them again, but I would avoid the fruit and the cookies.

Please follow my example, Kosher friends! I want a serious response from the Ordained Rabbis (?) who certify that Meal Mart foods ARE KOSHER! I ONLY eat Kosher foods since birth! So as I live in Brooklyn, far from my mom's kitchen, my cravings of nostalgia for the flavors of old, bring me to this place to satiate my hankerings for good, delicious, Hungarian fair. The hook, for me, is the succulent, steaming potato kugel that you can get all of Thursday and Friday. On occasion, when I drop in during the week, Lipa, the proprietor, will notify me that there happens to be a fresh kugel right out of the oven. No sense or logic can keep me from that perfect kugel. Lipa is a personality in the neighborhood. People come to his shop not only for his great food but for his humor, great smile and warm care for his customers. His catch phrases "Amerrrrrica," where he rolls the r with emphasis, or "it's peachy," in response to the common 'how are you,' are as endearing to all, as the schnitzel is deliciously juicy and the brisket is robustly redolent with flavor. The local children too, know of the man who enthusiastically hands out red lollypops. Service is pleasant and swift, though at times, as it becomes busy, it can look a tad chaotic. The regular Meal Mart staples (not worth the farthing, let alone the hefty prices the company imposes) are well eclipsed by the house-kitchen's own offerings. The salads, kugels (besides for the potato kugel I've already raved about, I recommend the carrot kugel highly,) chicken (grilled 'baby' chicken--the red meat of the bird--and chicken breast, besides the schnitzel and cornflakes encrusted chicken fingers,) liver, galla, soups (especially the chicken soup,) chulent, farfel, and even compote, are all special reminders of a homemade feast from the old world-Europe. He's reasonably priced and only a couple of blocks away from the Maimonides Medical Center, for easy access to those in that area. I rate this place to consistently deserve an +A, for great food, friendly service and warm, if slightly whacky, atmosphere.
