I have seen a little change in the quality of some items. Maybe I just caught a bad day. Parsley n Cheese Pork sausage ring was tasteless, missing not enough cheese or salt, not sure. The mozzarella knots in the oil were too large in size, dry to the bite and salty. I love most of their products, hope it was just a one time issue. Oh boy, I live for Deli shops in the Summer time and Spring time. You must stop at Pastosa Ravioli if you are ever in town. I had some of the best Ravioli and Deli sandwiches in my life. Good ravioli if you can buy it from a local store but good luck trying to get it shipped to you on time especially around the holidays when they just let your order sit and don't respond to call or emails. I tried for 4 weeks before anyone responded and they only did because I complained to my credit card company and they refunded my money and wanted to charge Pastosa a fee for the bank having to refund me. They had the nerve after nothing for 4 weeks to write me and ask me to reverse it with the bank and they would refund me so they would not have to pay the fee. I declined there request! read more

I went into the shop to buy one pound of fresh cod. There was an abundant supply of fresh cod. No, says the shop assistant, you have to buy two pounds. "Can you cut it?" I ask. "No", she says. I'm sorry that this is not customer service. I have been using the shop since 2012, but think that this an unacceptable way of doing business. I'm not a resident of Staten Island, NY, but my sister is. So when we come to visit her, she takes us to all her favorite spots. Her newest obsession is her "Little Italian Market", where she gets most of her food. And today, she took us there. Such a happy day for us all. You walk in and everyone greets you. There is a nice little grocery section with an assortment of things from olive oil, artichokes, canned tomatoes, etc. etc. There is also some fresh produce lingering. Not the biggest selection, but a good selection. We actually ordered our Thanksgiving turkey there. It was ready to pick up when we walked in. But here is what I truly loved. They have a large selection of prepared foods, meats, cold cuts.... you name it. The gentleman helping us was fantastic! We got risotto balls, broccoli rabe, pancetta, and some sausages. The risotto balls and broccoli are out of this world!! The rest is for thanksgiving use (yum). Next to the prepared food section is the cheese and fish section. The way to my heart is not only through food, but specifically cheese. And when you offer me some samples, straight off a butchers knife, you might as well marry me. That is exactly what they do here. They give you samples of cheese, which is oh so tasty! Maybe it is the ambiance, or the people, but I love this place, and trust me when I say, when I am in Staten Island, it will be my staple go to little market. read more

This is a terrible place to go if you have no self control. I went for a damn sandwich, and $90 later I left the store. They don't advertise a list of sandwiches, but were more than happy to make me one. I went with an Italian, which was ham, capicola and soppressata- heavy on the ham. The bread looked like a Portuguese roll, which at first bothered me because they have such beautiful bread here, but it was very soft and light and not a Portuguese roll at all. Overall, a pretty good sandwich. So why 5 stars? On man... the cheese! This place was a gold mine of beautiful looking hard italian cheese. Each wedge was anywhere from $10-16... so people with a lack of self control that get 5 beware, it can add up. I love this place. Out of all the Italian delis/markets on the island and I have been to them all... the quality and the prepared foods is the best here. All the guys behind the counter are very friendly and very accommodating which is a pleasure especially if you've seen the people who work behind the counter at places like Certos for instance. All the prepared foods I have eaten are great and they have healthy selections like kale salad which is delicious. I was surprised this place was so good because I have been to the Eltingville location and the food is awful. I found it it's different owners so that explains that. I recommend them for prepared foods, cold cuts, meat and fish. My only complaint is one of the cashiers who is constantly miserable. Love, love love Pastosa. As a youngster my family only had Pastosa on special occasions and holidays. If I were a parent, we would have Pastosa everyday. Everyday I tell you. Of course, we would have to apply lard to the doorways so that we would get around the house, but that's a small price to pay for such deliciousness. Although I live closer to the Richmond Ave/Rd locations the Forest Avenue store is my favorite. Its the smaller of the three stores, but there is just something about the homemade meat sauce there that is different than the others. Although its very similar in flavor, it seems fresher tasting than the Richmond locations. That's not to say the others aren't as good, its just my personal preference when I need a quick sauce for guests. The meats behind the counter are always top notch and the pastas are made daily to ensure freshness. The antipasti items are also delicious. Reasonably priced too. Before I took up cooking, I relied on Pastosa to impress potential boyfriends and it never failed. (Those potential boyfriends failed, but those are sordid tales for another page.) If you don't know better you'd give 5 stars. If you've been shopping there for decades you can not. The skill level of some of the workers is way below what it once was. The speed and pride and knowledge are just not the same. Not enough training, watching the clock, only working here part time, who can say? Even the attitude of the cashiers is inconsistent. From warm to cold, even rude. Before the expansion, when the old man was around more, these things would have been corrected instantly. The mister and I were so disheartened when we found out Cangiano's was gone. My first trip to Staten Island eight years prior, we stuffed ourselves gleefully on their fresh-baked bread and fresh mozzarella. What could possibly replace that? Luckily, the mister's mom pointed us to Pastosa. Tiny, unassuming, next to a Dunkin' Donuts...could it really be half as good? It was, oh, it was. Their bread is not quite the same, but it beats the hell out of any "Italian" bread you can find at a supermarket. Their fresh mozzarella, on the other hand, was scrumptious. The supermarket stuff, even when marketed as "fresh", is always bouncy and too firm, but this stuff was just right, with whey still leaking out. Their olives were plump and delicious, and the hanging salamis made it hard to choose just one. The sopressata we picked out was spicy and firm and so good that I could have cried knowing I would never find the like back home in California. A warning, though: this place is even tinier than it appears from the outside, what with all the displays, and there was a line every time we stopped in. The holidays were especially nuts, so be prepared to wait your turn (though everyone was well-behaved) for your goodies. read more

This is my go to place on Staten Island for prepared foods, sauce, fresh pasta and raviolis. They also have a very good small fish market. They carry organic produce and dairy and always have s great selection of baked bread and cookies. Always, I go there for 4 or 5 items and leave with more. I just can't resist the food there. FRESH ATTITUDES is more like it. I had a very RUDE experience with MICHAEL today in the store. Typical story....generations of the family build up a business and their PUNK kids think they can PISS on customers. My family will NEVER again shop in their store. Maybe they don't care, but we do. All I can say is you better check the weights of things that are pre-weighed (cause I caught them with items weighing LESS than what they actually are), and make sure they have SELL BY DATES on their items, (they seem to think you don't seem SELL BY DATES on some food items).
