I've shopped with Frank for almost 25 years, between Magic cards and comics. He's super friendly, and his prices are good.

Useful communication. Came to my home to purchase and carry away a hefty collection to it's next life.

Decent selection of comics. Some of the staff is more knowledgeable than others. Hours are okay.

Under The Cover - Great space!

Under The Cover

I go to romance bookstores in cities I visit and Under the Cover is probably the best I've seen!…read moreIt's large and organizes books by tropes. There's just a lot of small details that the owners have taken note of and implemented in the store. It's 2 large stores now (it's gotten bigger) and the decorations and gifts are wonderful. Very Instagrammable. Lots of books and gifts like candles, shirts, bags, knickknacks. Cute signs and decor. Books by local authors are highlighted. Staff is very helpful. Bathroom is clean and cute. There's lots of ladders that remind you that you're not Belle, do not stand on them! A must-visit if you're in KC!

I used to be in the bookstore business. Remember bookstores? Those cavernous spaces with endless…read moreshelves of books of which maybe only 5% actually got purchased? Yeah. Good memories. That's not the case at Under The Cover. This is a legit, almost boutique-ish, book and gift store. It's not a warehouse of books and just 'stuff'. No, their specialty lies with LGBTQ+ literature, awareness, and advocacy and that theme is everywhere in this cozy space. Under The Cover is moving books aplenty and their merch and sundries game is amazing. Throw up a hand if you're an LGBTQ+ supporter. Heck, throw up a hand if you're on the other side of those lifestyles, because Under The Cover will WELCOME you, too. There are plenty of Christian bookstores, so balancing that ledger with inclusivity and love by patronizing an alternative choice & lifestyle business should be on anyone's radar. The service is uber-friendly and they will give suggestions for just about anything. Sign their guest book (so fun!) or just drop your email to receive future discounts, notice of specials, or even in-store author events. Support local is not just a rallying cry for farmers markets or service industries. It's critical to buttress our friends and neighbors who pour their hearts and souls into offering the great city a neverending array of shops & locations by supporting their businesses. The value in a place like Under The Cover is not just in the price tag of the items. No, it's more in the merit of small businesses and their place in the fabric that is Kansas City. Parking is city-style, which can mean you're on your own. Prices are fair and consistent, and you will appreciate what this space has become and how it can add to the Union Hill area. Take the time, and the opportunity, to stop in and feel the love.

Ergh. I'll…read moreparaphrase what a friend of mine (who works in the newspaper biz) had to say about Ink, which summed up my feelings exactly: -"Ink is really a half baked idea...its just trying to position itself as a classier, hipper version of the Pitch but the result is this vanilla product." -"Ya gotta have enough talent to deliver a big proposition like that and their editorial comes up short." I'm no copy editor (though I am a former English major) but the first couple times I gave Ink a try, I was astounded by the amount of simple grammatical errors littered throughout the whole publication. Perhaps their editing has stepped it up a notch but...I wouldn't know. I don't feel the need to pick it up anymore. *edit* Now that I think about it, I know they messed up quotations a friend of mine gave about a fashion show he styled AND Ink staff took credit for the photo he took and submitted for the article. No thanks.

I'm going to leave the politics out of this because we all know that mixing media and criticism can be a dangerous game. So this review is really to bring about attention to the folks who are behind Ink. So far I'm pretty pleased with their offering and even feel like their story generation and content is a departure from local competing media. For me to actually sit and read papers like this takes a focus on content, not spam ads on every other page. I like to actually see local news and community insiders or professionals giving insights on various topics. Ink has done a pretty good job so far in my opinion with bringing some locality to their stories and steering clear of just being a reviews paper. Right now, their headlining stories have been great and their event picks are always fun to glance out, especially the design of the weeklong layout in the center of the paper. Love that.

This bargain store is absolutely a bargain! So many good prices when Christmas shopping I was…read moresurprised. They have a huge variety of just about anything you could think of, I would say it's your one stop shop. I picked up great stocking stuffers and present for all members of the family. I would definitely come back for some essential items as well since they seem to be cheaper here than anywhere else.

I've been to a few locations for Ollie's in Kentucky so I had an idea of what to expect. The store…read morewas pretty clean and easy to navigate around. The bathroom was also pretty clean. They has a large selection of books, housewares, food items (pantry goods and drinks), accessories, home goods like bedding and linens, a small pet section, toiletries, luggage, sporting goods, cleaning supplies, electronics, a little bit of outdoor items and shoes/clothing, and seasonal items. Honestly, little bit of everything. The layout was pretty easy to figure out, bathroom easy to find, and items neatly arranged. They had quite a few employees helping to arrange items in the store and to help us with any questions or concerns. Although selection was a little lacking in some categories, given that it is a bargain outlet/closeout store, it still had some good deals and items priced competitively cheap. If I'm in the area, I will make sure tk visit the spot again, since their inventory changes regularly.
