I've seen a lot of reviews about Clint's comics and I'm glad I have never been there to buy any comics but there is one comic book shop that I have been to and i goes there every day it's crossroads comics and art if you're looking for a great comic book shop with great customer service and if you're looking for any comics from hi thanks the '70s '80s '90s to current I recommend you to go there the owner and her husband are great with customers and they treat them greatly. read more

I've been wanting to come to this store for several years now, and I wish I had read the reviews before I came. But honestly, I wouldn't have believed the reviews if I didn't experience it myself. I've been going to comic shops since the mid-eighties as a child, and I've never been to a comic shop where you're not allowed to come into the store. Especially at Christmas time. This is money-making time... But nope, locked up like a dog in heat during mid day posted business hours. Plus, the rules plastered all over the door to enter. If you're going to have so many rules, at least let people in the door. The owner is going have a heart attack once the street car line is done, and people want to enter her store and support small local businesses. This store is no Mile High Comics, they're going have to relying on more than just online business and comic book pulls of a handful of people to sell enough to stay afloat in this day an age. Have lived in the neighborhood for 10 years, so Clint's used to be my main comic shop...after the lady took over following Jim's death I've only "been" once. And by "been" there, I mean I stood outside the front door and passed money to a lady in a hazmat suit and got handed a comic book through a cracked door. Browsing comics is half the fun. I want to look at the edges and corners to pick out my own book. If you're that scared of Covid and potential riff raff in the area, close the store and hire someone to build an online shop. This is not the comic book store experience you're looking for. I feel bad for people going there for the first time and running into that cold welcome. My caucasian husband took our daughters here. The store personnel fawned over them, gave them free merch, talked to them for a half hour and my husband and daughters bought stuff. Hubby comes home and says I should visit because after all, I'm the comic book collector in the family. I went the next day with my daughters. I'm not caucasian, I'm very brown. The older lady behind the counter not only asked me to check my purse but then proceeded to follow me suspiciously around the store. I've been around the block a few times to know racism when I see it. So uncomfortable. But I didn't want my daughters to feel uncomfortable so I just told them I'd wait in the car for them because I was finished shopping. They said, "oh no mom. We see what's going on and we can't support a store that would treat people that way." I'm so proud of my daughters. And I'll never go back there again. read more

If I could rate lower than 1 I would. Their hours say 11 to 6 but apparently only by appointment, no browsing or even entering the store unless it's Wednesday 10 to 1. If I'm being honest, I know nothing about comic books and the store you can purchase them in. However, my fiancé does and he loves Clint's. We went to a few comic book stores that were closer to our house, but he insisted that Clint's was the best. So we came and from what I saw, he was right! This place is HUGE.. so many comics to be read. Not to mention the staff was the most friendly and knowledgeable out of all the stores we have visited. They made me want to read some comics, and that's not a desire I have ever had. They worked with my fiancé to find what he was wanting and in his price point, and overall we had a really good experience. As we were leaving, one of the workers offered us brownie bites that she made, and if that's not the best customer service then I don't know what is. read more

A woman begrudgingly opened the locked door (during business hours mind you) and repeatedly asked me what I wanted specifically with her store. I was floored...I said that I'd like to browse as I hadn't been in the store in over thirty years and she then points to a sign taped to the outer window that states that "browsing" is on Wednesday from 10am to 1pm. I drove from the burbs into downtown just to see the store - excited to potentially get into comics for the first time since I was a kid. I will never return. read more

49 years young, that's a big number for anybody. Buy, sell, appraisals, comics new and old, graphics, anime lot's of collectibles and the stash is always getting refreshed. Repping some big names in Star Wars, Spiderman, Superman, Batgirl, Avengers from early years to modern and tons of niche names too. Never walk out empty handed and a great idea for unique gifts. If I'm looking for something exact I do tend to have more luck on line but nothing beats instant gratification. They are cheaper than Amazon in the comic storage department (ie sleeves, boxs) and break even on some of their goods due to no shipping cost if gone the on-line purchase route. The building it self feels like a collectible, built maybe early 1900's. Nice, clean well lit space with lots well labeled boxes to sift or shelves to peruse. Right off Main street between midtown and downtown which translates into slightly better, free, non parallel parking. read more

What makes me most angry about writing this is that I have to take time out of my day to write a review. I always strive to promote local business and have shopped at Clint's on and off for the 5 years I've lived here but today will be the last time ever. The poor attitude, rude behavior, and condensing approach reached a peak today and there's no coming back from it. My girlfriend and I basically felt harassed and unwelcome during the entire visit. I'll walk you through the 3 minutes I was in the shop until I left. The front door was locked due to it being broken and had to walk around back. (No big deal) We walk in and we're asked to bring our drinks to the front (understandable) by the gentleman who was polite until we approached the front counter and we're spoken to like children about how "liquid and paper don't mix" by the crotchety old lady. Lady I'm in my 30s, just tell me where to put my coffee and let me go about my business. As my girlfriend and I are browsing the selection of comics, the old lady starts following us around and tells my girlfriend to put her phone away because they don't allow photos. Ok, well texting and photos are two different things. I'd also like to mention that this is my girlfriend's first comic shop experience and you ruined it for her. After that, the old lady appears again to ask if we're finding everything ok. I asked her if there were any other issues for a specific comic and was rudely told that "if it's not on the shelf, why would we have more". I told her thanks and expected her to move along but she stayed around and decided Harass my girlfriend about her purse and told her to leave it at the counter. We told her no and expressed her unwelcoming tone, grabbed our coffee and left. The entire time we were made to feel like thieves and assholes when we were nothing but polite. They also ruined the only comic book experience my girlfriend has ever had. Hey old lady! Chill out! Quite treating your customers like garbage. Also, now would be a perfect time to open a shop in KC and put these dinosaurs out of business. Their local and independent selection is pure garbage. 0/10 - would never recommend unless the old lady quits or is fired. read more

The owners are like the people who always wanted to show you their new gaming console but never let you play it. You will be treated like you're trying to steal from the get-go and you'll not even be allowed to browse the inside of comics without being asked to leave. Some older lady came out of the shop while I was waiting for someone who was at the Piano Store for training, and she stared at me like I was doing something wrong and then had the audacity to stop in front of me in her car and take a photo with the flash on of me. Today was my last day at Clint's. I've shopped here for comics--not a weekly customer, mind you, but probably once a month--for the last 10-12 years. The former owner, Jim, was from Independence, and we would talk often about various things. He had rules and was often curt to kids who broke those rules ("this is not a library!"), but he was pleasant to everyone who abided. The woman who's taken over? Not so much. Whenever I would bring my daughters in, she followed us around the store, incessantly reminding us of where the kids section is (as if we can't read). So about six months ago, after a pattern of this kind of behavior, we left after being in the store for about three minutes, and I never brought them back. There are better, friendlier stores where I can take my girls, and they don't deserve to be treated that way. Me, I don't have thin skin. I continued to go there alone and would often just grin and bear the weird behavior. Her front door she'd keep locked when it was windy and, man, she'd get really icy if you made her get up and unlock it for you (I wasn't the only one who approached that way) and then treated you like a moron for not having seen her chicken-scratched sign or that there was a rear entrance. So, okay, I used the rear entrance like all the regulars for the next several months. No big deal. I kept coming, though without my daughters. Sometimes she'd be pleasant, sometimes she'd follow me around. She never seemed to remember me until I checked out (and she had my credit card in hand!), and then it was all pleasantries. "Oh, you're on the email list, aren't you? I recognize your name." Today, I walked in with my mask on, politely asked about a comic that she reported came in next week, and proceeded to browse with her permission. I didn't have gloves, which seemed to bother her, so she gave me a pair. Again, this seemed like an invitation to shop, right? (Am I on the email list? she asked. Yes, I am. And I've been shopping here FOR 12 YEARS. What being on the list has to do with being in her store? I'm not sure!) After following me around, she went back to help someone else. I kept my (gloved) hands to myself, and before I even had the chance to get to the end of the first aisle (I was about to pick up and buy the first three Star Wars issues by Charles Soule and was set to purchase the most recent issue of The Low Low Woods by Carmen Machado as well) the lady approached me again and asked AGAIN if I needed any help in a tone that suggested she really didn't want to help me. When I said "No," she told me she was going to have to ask me to leave. That's right; she kicked me out of the store for shopping. I feel for the lady, who I think is a relative of Jim's (who died in an altercation following a robbery). But I am never going back to that shop. A to Z Comics in Blue Springs can have my money now. They treat their customers like they should be treated. If you live on the Kansas side, Pop Culture Comix is also really good. read more

Midtown is kind of a weird place and Clint's is one place of all places where the weird is kind of normal and those from different backgrounds come together to immerse themselves in the lands of their favorite superheros. Clint's specializes in comics and graphic novels. There are at least four aisles dedicated to new and recent releases plus a couple that allow you to dig through old titles. There are also displays of collectibles and posters for those who are into such things. As a fully grown and almost middle aged gentleman, who has recently began collecting again, I'm glad that Clint's is close, but I will say that sometimes I wish the store would be a little more consistent with its orders. It seems sometimes when I go to get a new issue there are tons to choose from and then the next month they'll be sold out before I can arrive after work. I know some of this comes from being a small and independent business and sometimes not being able to get everything that's ordered, however it can be a little bit of a bother to show up and not be able to get your issue. It's not a super big deal and I enjoy having an independent business in the neighborhood however if you know you're looking for a big release you might call ahead. This is Midtown so parking is pretty much where ever you can find it. I like to park down the block in front of the Thriftway and then walk down the block. I will note that during busier times that spaces might be scarce. Last, but not least, Wednesday is new release day. Feel free to stock up. read more

Just order comics online. I have been getting back into comics after a few years away. This is one of the only shops near me. I have tried 5 different times to come into this shop. Yet every time the door is locked, they still only do online pick ups. I don't like being this guy, but if this is how you want to run a business, making it literally impossible to spend money at your establishment. I visited at the end of March while I was in town from Los Angeles for a conference. I'm not a "regular" anywhere, so am used to being ignored in most comic shops; so the negative reviews on here did not dissuade me from stopping by on my way to the airport to grab some books I had desperately been wanting to read. I smiled to the men behind the counter as I entered with my roller bag in tow and politely asked if I could leave my bags at the front of the store while I browsed; they said "sure" and not much else as they were busy putting together pull list items (from what I could tell while half-listening). A kind older woman was meandering busily around the store engaged in various tasks, and asked me multiple times if she could help me find anything specific - always with a big smile on her face. She greeted multiple other patrons in a similarly positive manner. I spent about an hour in the store, selecting my new releases and then combing through the back issues boxes for some gems I'd been needing. The bargain bin of 99-cent comics also bore some great fruit! When I presented to check out with my bounty, the men behind the counter turned their attention to me without delay. I tried to pay with two different debit cards (they don't accept my AmEx or Discover), but the machine kept denying them. They called the woman to help and were very apologetic the entire time. When I asked a couple of times for the nearest ATM so I could just go grab cash to pay, they refused to tell me and said they were going to make sure they got a card to go through so I didn't have to go out of my way. Eventually, I remembered I had an older Mastercard credit card, so I was able to pay with that. When they found out my banks were out of town - which may have been causing the cards to be declined? - they were very excited to know how I learned about the store and why I was in Kansas City. They turned out to be quite gracious hosts and were very appreciative that I had stopped by. This certainly was not the elitist establishment run by cranky proprietors that I had read about in reviews, so they definitely earned the rare Yelp review from me. 5 stars for variety of selection - including new and old comics, plus collectibles if that is your thing - and friendly staff. Maybe it was my smile and positive attitude that got me further than some of these other reviewers. I will definitely head back when my travels lead me to Kansas City again. read more

Visited this place a while back and overall was not pleased with the experience. My first time in Kansas City ended up being a nearly ruined trip after visiting this place before heading home. Woman behind the counter was unbelievably rude. Followed me and my buddies around the store until eventually flat out saying we weren't welcome. Left, furious, and frustrated we weren't able to purchase the comics we came in for. I don't recommend this place. Could it just have been she was having a bad day? Possibly. If I ever were to return, I would recommend being as polite as humanely possible- but even so I doubt you'll be getting a good customer service. read more

My fiancé, an avid Pokémon collector, and his friend had the luxury of a day off work today. Seeming that they should have fun, then went to Clint's to inquire about card sleeves etc. To their surprise, they were quickly rushed out of the store by a bitter woman that gave no inquest into why they were being kicked out of the store. She physically put her hands on their shoulders and ushered them out. They did not touch the merch. Nor were doing anything remotely "suspicious". Dumbfounded, they walked away feeling absolutely unwanted. Insulted as they were, they walked away from Clint's for the first and LAST time. Hearing about such a mess from my fiancé, my blood starting to curdle and I felt an immense urge to right a review. Browsing with a buddy of mine and then she came up, at first it was normal customer service then it became weird questions like browsing was not welcome in their space. I have been coming off and on here for about 10 years, but I think that is going to be the last time. Came into KC for a wedding, decided to walk about a mile from the hotel with my two sons to buy each of them a book from Clint's comics. Within four minutes (not exaggerating, I looked at my watch) an older man (whom I can only assume was "Clint") walked up to my oldest boy (who has special needs) and told him he "can't read the comics because then they won't make any money." For the record, my son was leafing through a Simpsons comic to decide which he was going to buy. I quickly turned to say something to this crypt keeper of a gentleman and, like a geriatric Batman, he had disappeared into the rows of overpriced long boxes. Ticked off, I instructed my kids we were leaving and high tailed it out of Clint's "look but don't touch" nerd mausoleum. This is what I don't think Clint, A.K.A "the Mr. Potter of comics," understands: We would have spent at LEAST twenty bucks at his establishment, maybe more (I didn't have time to look around), but thanks to his Mr. Wilson disposition, we bought nothing. If you like overpriced Howard the Duck treasury editions, glass cases full of Wild West toys only 1% of the public think are cool, and grumpy old dudes who yell at you for looking too long at comics... well Clint's Comics might be for you. P.S. It was abnormally hot and stuffy in there too, maybe that's to blame for the negative vibe, or maybe, like the Grinch, Clint's shoes were too tight. Aside from ignoring customers, the jerk who runs this place offers literally no input or help when you ask him if he carries certain comics. Upon entering Clint's Comics for the first (and last) time, I was greeted by the owner angrily yelling at the guy walking in behind me with a small water bottle, "Hey! No outside food or drink! LEARN TO READ!" The place fell uncomfortably quiet after that and it was painfully obvious no one wanted to be there anymore. Now, maybe bringing a drink into a comic shop is a touch boneheaded (though I also did not see any signage saying it was prohibited), but there's no excuse for that kind of belligerence. I am not surprised to find Clint's Comics has a reputation for rudeness and needs a hard lesson in customer courtesy. Their selection was unimpressive and I was soon out the door. This place is what happens when comic book nerds grow old and bitter from never finding the super heroine of their dreams... or whatever issue crawled up the owner's hinder and died to make him openly hostile to honest people giving his mediocre comic shop a chance... I can only speculate. Don't give these guys your money. If you can go ANYWHERE else, go there. read more

Clint's has a very modest store front but probably one of the largest selection of Silver & Bronze age comics I've ever seen tons of Indy modern age comics as well if that's your bag and all the big name titles of course. The shop keep was really quick with a laugh so you can throw out a couple a one liners & you can feel like Richard Pryor. He also told this was the oldest comic book shop in the U.S. (opened in 1967) which I guess makes it the oldest in the world sense we invented the medium (don't quote me on that it could just be my ugly American showing) Another useful tip they only take credit cards for purchases over 10 dollars. read more

Surprised by the negative comments by some. I have been in here a lot and never had a bad experience with Jim or Paul. Both are very professional and knowledgable. They have even done special orders for me. I enjoy going in and hanging out and taking about anything and everything. Jim has always helped me and made suggestions. I've visited a few times before this, and this time I came in on their customer appreciation day sale... and got run out of the store by the old woman working the counter! I and three friends went to the store as a research trip (we're KCAI illustration students) and were planning to pick up a few comic books to use as reference while we create a comic of our own. My friend took a photo of one of the comics and the old woman approached us to say we can't take photos of the books. That's fine, it's your store, my friend apologized and explained what we were planning... and she flies off the handle about how as artists, we should be ashamed of taking photos, that there are court cases for this type of copyright infringement, we should know the law... (Which, I would like to point out, is that the art cannot be circulated. But you can take a photo for personal use, ie snapping a photo of the cover to note the cover artist, as my friend was doing. She was intending to look for/purchase a comic illustrated by this artist because she didn't like the interior. The covers are, obviously, made available widely by the publisher for the purpose of marketing.) The old woman said if we were just here to take photos, we should leave. We quickly determined that was the best option (as despite my friend's repeated apologies she had barely stopped to breathe as she reprimanded us for this supposed 'crime'). She hounded us all the way to the door, until all four of us left. Additionally, the comics are overpriced (I saw a 2017 standard issue Spider-Man marked up for 20 dollars...) I will NEVER be returning here, and I advise you to do the same. read more

Comic book stores seem to choose their patrons not the other way around. I've had good experiences in the past with a good store where I know other patrons had issues and I recognized there was a disparity in treatment there as well. Clint's is no different. It's clear that regulars are well met with conversation from some of the others reviews and I can appreciate the appeal to that. But, newcomers like myself get screened immediately to verify whether or not it's worth their time based on of a lot of assumptions. After finally moving back to KC and being out of the know for a bit thanks to a deployment, I was really looking forward to finding some new things at a store front on a few miles away. I walked in and was met with a half-hearted grin from the woman behind the counter. As I walked by the look turned into something that looked like concern and afterward I found out she had locked the door behind me (store being two hours away from closing). I walked over to my sister who I was meeting up with and within the span of three minutes we were told several times to not touch the merchandise, to be aware that collectors prefer pristine comics, and to not take pictures. These are all very valid concerns in a comic store, but normally some form of action would have taken place prior to these verbalized concerns. The employee then proceeds to do this same thing to two other customers that were clearly not regulars. We decided to leave versus being harassed. I imagine if I come back I might get a different response/experience if someone else is working. Who knows. Finding out that she locked us in after coming in really doesn't sit well with me, however. If this experience is any indication, some revitalization needs to take place with this store and many others like it. read more

I have driven by Clint's a million times but never stopped in before two weeks ago, now I have gone in twice in a week and am going back this week. I have become addicted to the TV Show Walking Dead which is based on graphic novels. I had to have them. I couldn't wait until Sept 2012 to find out what would happen to Rick and his rag tag group of survivors in the Zombie World. I drove down to Clint's with my niece who immediately ran to the back to the Batman and Superman section. I went to the Walking Dead spin rack. Jim the owner noticed me looking at the hard backs, the soft covers and the compendium. He said buy the Compendium it is the 1st 8 volumes in one book and saves you $15. I said okay let's do that. My niece comes up with a couple books and we make our purchase. We stand around and talk awhile. He has worked her 30+ years and took it over from his Dad who opened the store. He loves his job and is so knowledgeable. I read the Compendium in a day and went back a few days later to buy volumes 9-15. He was out of 11 so he is ordering that one in for me and it should be in soon. The store is great and organized and just a little something different and special in Westport. Go in and get a comic book or two and hang out and listen to Jim talk. read more

When my wife and I moved, we knew we had to move our comic book pull list to a new place. My wife found Clint's and suggested we check it out. From the moment we walked in, we knew this was the place to get our comics. Since then, we have been by several times. I can see where some of the negative reviews have come from, with a gruff older gentleman who is one of the several who run the store, but he grows on you. His passion for the business is what has kept Clint's around. This store has been open for years, and I'm certain it is because people like him have been apart of running this store. The selection of comics, toys, books, and memorabilia is outstanding here. It is a comic utopia that I look forward to visiting as often as I can. read more

Per the negative reviews, I was very cautious and guarded taking my 2 older sons (12 and 8) into Clint's Comics for the first time. I even left my other younger kids at home, just in case the infamously irascible owners were there to scorn them for being too loud or crazy, which they are. I was pleasantly surprised how welcoming the woman behind the counter was, and she even gave us some free comics since it was our first time in the store. Only complaint really (and this is generally for all comic book stores) is that some graphic covers are at eye level in spots, but that's sadly unavoidable these days and not so much the fault of the stores. Refreshingly though, Clint's Comics has a few "Kid Friendly" racks that my 8 year old was happy to peruse. Will definitely return for more comics! read more

Looking at these reviews, I've seen the same issues arise again and again. And there's a good reason for it. Clint's Comics is everything that people negatively stereotype comic culture with, from the condescending customer service to the dank atmosphere. I decided to try them today as there was a comic I couldn't find elsewhere. Halfway through my question I was cut off with "Sold out. All sold out." I must admit it feels good to read the below and confirm what we knew to be true after our visit to Clint's Friday afternoon. Upon walking into the shop, which seemed really cool, and as a collector of Batman comic books something I was really looking forward to, unfortunately we were 'greeted' by an elderly woman who smiled passively and made it a point to single out my girlfriend to throw her water away. My girlfriend is 26 years old. No problem, we thought, we understood the rationale of water around old comics. As we aquatinted ourselves with the store, the woman lurked behind us. Repeating that this is a 'collectors only' store, it was a surprise to us with how insisting this cold woman was to us. The woman followed us around for several more minutes until telling my girlfriend that she couldn't touch any of the comics...here's where we thought we were on a hidden camera television show. So let's just put this in perspective, you have a physical store, with books and comics, and expect no one to even touch ANYTHING? Keep in mind these were comics of new age and not anything to be concerned of decreasing value and in addition, my girlfriends curiosity was gentle and nothing to be met with such harassment. I frankly told the woman that we would like our space please and communicated this in a calm and poised tone. Now, prepare for this, the woman said that 'they had used comics that go for 50 cents a piece'. I cant remember the last time I was treated so rudely. A larger gentleman with a cane met me and began to quiz me on my knowledge of Batman comics and quickly realized I did know what I was talking about and tucked his tail between his legs about as soon as he entered the conversation. Much of the things I saw in the glass cases were familiar merchandise personally owned and it really was a cool store. I am not sure if this is reflective of the owners but in my life I have seen a familiar trend where attitudes reflect leadership. It was almost hilarious with how removed from reality these people were. Love for people will lead to success-not your self indulged ideal for materials like comics. I will never return to Clint's and in the 3 days since this ugly experience I have met others who have had similar experiences. It's a shame that the store won't get off the ground in the way that it could with better people. read more

Clint's is owned by a woman who founded the establishment 52 years ago. Unfortunately it seems some of the culture and xenophobia have not been lost on her. Upon entering my friend (who is African American) was looking at comics when she approached in an extremely aggressive manner to tell him no photos. After he explained he wasn't taking photos but rather waiting for me to arrive she told him to go stand in the front of the store. He refused and politely asked to remain where he was since he was simply looking at comics. From there the situation escalated and ultimately once I arrived we were both asked to leave. read more

i read the reviews on the older lady that works there and she didnt disappoint. wife, infant and i were in town and i wanted to pick up a few books at a local shop. i get it, we showed up 30 minutes before closing time so they werent thrilled but c'mon, you want to sell some books? try not crawling up my butt right from the jump. she asked if i was looking for something and i said the goon #1. she said they sold out, fine. ill just take a look around. she then asked me no less than three times within a minute if she can help find something. i had baby's backpack (diapers, wipes) on which they said we have to leave up front. fine, i kinda get it. when she then said we had to leave our stroller containing our baby up front, are u on drugs?!? we took three steps in and took three steps out. worst experience at a shop ever. horrible! read more

They had great customer service, were able to help me find the comics I was looking for and genuinely appreciate your customers

The owner is rude. He acts put-upon when dealing with customers. He treats you like you're not worthwhile if you only buy a few issues. Don't talk to him about the clearly marked "not for sale" display cases. I said, "you have some neat stuff." He assumed that I did not see the signs and proceeded to treat me like an idiot. I've been there a few times because I thought that I might have caught him on a bad day or two, but now I know that he is usually rude. Also I don't care if people running stores eat behind the counter, but I do expect someone to chew with his mouth closed. The store is sizable. The selection is good. But there are several better options for comic stores all over the city. I'm never going back. read more
