BJ's I had heard great things, so went by for lunch. Tried the large cheeseburger on a po-boy like bun. Place is uncomfortably hot & crowded inside, service slow (they were very busy at lunch-time), burger quality so-so. I believe this has same owner as the venerable "Old Tyme Grocery" near the U L main campus. Old Tyme is a legendary sandwich place with a massive following across Acadiana. Old Tyme has had quality consistency problems in recent years, too, but seems to have stabilized lately. As BJ's is in my traffic pattern,I'll try to pre-order some po-boys to-go for next time. It really pains me to submit this review as we have been going to B J's for years and have generally always enjoyed the food. However yesterday (August 27th), we were really disappointed. My wife ordered a 1/2 shrimp poboy and I ordered just a simple 1/2 hamburger poboy with cheese. The problem was the hamburger was cold, not even warm, the shredded cheese they used didn't even melt and in fact was cold. Very disappointing. read more

Great homemade plate lunch. Pork roast rice and gravy with corn and green beans. Everything was seasoned really good but I had to put me some Tabasco. I got a meat ball poboy for at home later and it was ok. I wish they had pastrami and corned beef. But overall a great place for lunch read more

I knew going in this place was going to be good. It's owned and run by the same family that owns Old Tyme Grocery (one of Lafayette's most popular poboy shops) and they obviously are doing something right. This place does plate lunches daily so instead of my usual poboy I ordered one of those. Great choice! My smothered chicken over rice and gravy was tasty and moist. I had corn and cabbage as my sides and they even brought out a brownie. This was a lot of food for what we paid! I was stuffed! We also ordered the baked catfish with seafood topping and that was excellent as well. The chef came to our table and explained that was a dish he had come up with at the last minute to add to today's menu. Good idea, chef! The shop is charming and service is very friendly-you feel like you're eating in your friends kitchen. I love all the Saints, Tigers and Ragin Cajun newspaper clippings and t-shirts adorning the walls here. I will be back here for certain! Give it a try! read more

This place looks like an old establishment, and not really sure how long its been here. I was around the Broussard area, and wanted a poboy during lent, and this was the place my friend suggested. Siri suggested this place for our lunch and am I glad she did. Excellent roast beef or shrimp poboys with lots of condiments and veggies. Great sides. The place was fast and efficient. Simple and traditional yet delicious! The Po-Boy is such a simple concept - French Bread, Lettuce, Tomato, Mayo, some Hot Sauce possibly, and the fried seafood (or Roast Beef) item of your choice. Being this simple, it is strange to me how often it is not well executed. In this case, simplicity was mastered! First off, do not do what I did and come here without cash. They do not accept credit cards! That walk to the gas station was not only embarrassing, but a less than comfortable walk considering the heat and my grumbling stomach. First off, these Po-Boy's are huge! A "whole" is definitely two meals for me. Value is not bad either 8.95 for the "whole" is not a bad deal consider it's size. I decided to go with the Catfish Po-Boy and I'm very happy I did! There is a lot of catfish on this bad boy - probably 3-4 good size pieces. The fish has a great Cajun spiced batter and didn't have that typical "muddy" taste. I could tell that it was fresh for that reason. The toppings are what you would expect - shredded lettuce and sliced tomato. They also add Mayo and a little hot sauce (it wasn't very spicy, so I may get more hot sauce on my next trip). The French Bread deserves it's own paragraph. I hate to repeat myself, but simple is the best way to describe it. This French Bread is not of the crunchy variety at all. Also, I am not sure if they cut out some of the middle or if it is just made that way, but the bread is thinner than I am used to - a good thing in my opinion. It really highlights what is inside of the Po-Boy. Expect a little chewyness, but not so much to take away from the Po-Boy itself. Next time I am back to the Lafayette area for business, I will be back to try another one of BJ's delicious Po-Boys! read more

A very good lunch spot. I've haven't been to the local favorite, Old Tyme Grocery so I can't compare the two. I got a "Old Tyme Special" Poboy which was good, nothing to get ecstatic over. Was brought here by my coworkers for lunch. I should have known they brought me to another place for a gut buster of a lunch. My mind told me to get the salad, my stomach won and I got the seafood platter. 2 very generous portions of catfish, a few oysters and a couple of shrimp. This piled onto a bed of fresh fries plus a side and a cookie. The catfish had a thin layer of batter, to where it pulled off easily. Still tasted great with the standard tartar sauce and ketchup. The oysters were nice and chewy, can't say they were the most amazing but definitely in line with other fried oysters I've had in the area. Shrimp was crisp and not overly battered. Can't think of much more to say about it. For my side was the broccoli and cheese, which was the first I've ever had them mashed together. It was tasty and a large amount of it. I went cheap on my drink with just water, but it's mint water which is a nice twist from your regular freebie drink. Value: For $12, which is on the high side of my lunch budget, it was very good, especially considering it's seafood. What I should have done was taken half of the meal home for dinner, but after I had the first bite of that catfish I couldn't stop till the plate was empty. read more

Went here to pick up lunch for me and some coworkers. One of my coworkers who was paying gave me his card and some cash, just in case. When I got there I found out they didn't accept cards. Turned out that my coworker didn't give me enough money. I was a few bucks short. I went back to my car to figure out what to do. I didn't want to use someone else's ATM and get extra charges and my bank was too far out of the way. Came back in to tell them to take my sandwich off the order. The manager was standing right there listening and told the cashier to ring it up some kind of way so that I could get everything with the cash I had. Great local diner! We were visiting for the zoo and Tabasco museum and decided to stop in for lunch with 4 adults and 3 kids right in the heat of the lunchtime rush.
