Two parts to the review: 1) My time with Dr Patel and the PA - 2) Waiting in the office I met with Dr Patel to follow up on the recommendation of an emergency room doctor to see a cardiologist. Dr Patel listened well to my experience and asked questions to best identify and direct me to the next steps. He came across as caring and very knowledgeable, as he should be. At a follow up appointment, the PA provided my wife and I the results of a test, and like Dr Patel, expressed care. The wait. During the three times I visited the office, the office was abuzz by the health care staff working, while the waiting area, although full, was very still. My total time of waiting until being seen was about 1 hour and a quarter with a total time in the office of over an hour. Because of Dr Patel and the PA, I thought the wait was worth it. Plan accordingly. Currently, the office does not have punch cards for office visits so that you pay a co-pay each of the first four visits, and on the fifth visit, no co-pay is needed.

On EVERY occasion, I had to call back to ask after his instructions. His staff never sent my prescriptions to my pharmacy, nor were my procedures followed up. Additionally, the doctor performed a stress test. I had to call on several occasions to get the results of the stress test. I gave his staff permission to submit the results to my other doctors. My requests received courteous replies and assents but never any action. I ended up firing this doctor because of the ineptitude of his staff.

He told me that the results of the echocardiogram he ordered were normal and that I had nothing to worry about. A couple of years later, I found myself in the FH ER and was diagnosed with severe congestive heart failure. I was given a defibrillator vest and allowed to go home. He performed a cardiac catheterization the next week. Afterward, he told me that I needed a heart transplant and began the paperwork to get me on the waiting list. It turned out that an acquaintance happened to have had the same cardiologist. When he couldn't tell her what was wrong with her heart, she went to Mid-Florida Cardiology Specialists (now Orlando Health Heart Institute Cardiology Group) for a second opinion. They put her on a wearable heart monitor until she had an episode and a short time later, she had an ablation done, which saved her heart from any further damage. I couldn't call Mid-Florida fast enough. I was seen quickly, and my new cardiologist said I was a great candidate for a bi-ventricular pacer with a defibrillator. Although my heart had already sustained permanent damage, I saw almost immediate improvement of symptoms after the surgery and a daily routine of medications. So Mid-Florida helped both of us in the long run.

After tests ruled…read moreout a strictly cardiac problem, Dr. Patel told me my problem was not my heart, but in the next breath, wanted to perform a heart catheterization. Several times I asked him if it was his professional opinion that my heart was not the issue. He assured me each time that he did not believe that I had any cardiac disease, but kept pressuring me to have the heart catheter procedure done, because I was in the hospital already and he had time to do it. I politely declined, a dozen times, saying that the invasiveness of the test concerned me. It did not concern him. He said side effects didn't happen that often. He continued to try to convince me to have it done, saying he would be able to actually see the valves and read the pressures. The pressures were read during the Echo-cardiogram, so I did not see the point of doing the test. No matter. He continued to pressure me to have the test done. He said my chest pain was not consistent with heart issues. (A second opinion from a cardiologist at Cleveland Clinic disagreed with him) He said I did have high blood pressure, but it was "...no big deal..." Finally, I said I would consider doing the Cardiac catheter as an outpatient, when I was feeling better. That did not please him, but he finally left. Afterwards, it was as if I refused a lifeboat in a flood! The hospital took little time in discharging me, no more tests were ordered by any doctor to determine the CAUSE of the symptoms that had brought me there. Dr. Patel acknowledged that I had a problem with high blood pressure, 165/109 as I write this, but he neglected to prescribe any medication to lower it. Because of his lack of interest in the cause of my problems, he did not properly treat my high blood pressure and tachycardia. I made an appointment at Cleveland Clinic two weeks after I was discharged from the hospital. The cardiologist there was SPEECHLESS when he read the record, heard how high pressured Dr. Patel's Cardiac catheter sales pitch was! He was appalled that he did not treat the high blood pressure that he diagnosed! He assured me that he would have made the same choice I did, not to have had the Cardiac Catheter done. He asked if Longwood was a very small town in the Panhandle, far from any big city or quality medical care. The geography was wrong, but the conclusion was correct.
