The "School" horses are the most well cared for School horses I have ever encountered, they are far from over worked most don't work more than 1 lesson per day and they are definitely not your typical cranky lesson horses. I wanted a straight-forward, well-kept, non-commercial farm, and you not only get that with Sugar Ridge, but I have also found a family with these ladies and the horses there. The grounds are gorgeous, with plenty of room to ride and options to suit each skillset. It's been amazing to learn more about these gorgeous animals, and it does a world of good just being around them. You can also tell how well-taken care of the horses are just by how affectionate they are with Carin; she does an absolutely incredible job with them and it shows. She is also an amazing instructor, and I couldn't imagine being taught by anyone else. (Nor would I want to!) She had been horseback riding as a kid and really wanted to relive that experience with me. I on the other hand had never been on a horse before. I didn't want to tell her that I was feeling nervous or that I had some concerns about getting on a horse. But I did tell the lady who owns the farm privately and she helped me get comfortable. She helped select the horses from my wife and I, and although my wife had experienced as a child, the owner stated our older bodies are much different now and she picked a nice gentle horse for my wife and I. She took extra time to show me how to properly sit on the horse, keep my feet in the stirrups and hold onto the reins. In talking with friends they explained at most farms you normally get led by a human being around the circle a couple of times and that's horseback riding. At Spring Tide Farm they took us out and we rode the horses! The owner was a patient woman who was so kind to her animals as well as us humans. She explained she's been doing this for 50 years and the horses are like her children. She explained that her love for horses, not only extends to her horses, but those that she boards. The time seem to fly by, my wife and I had a great experience together. Time for the next thing on our list.

Cory and Jean possess a high level of integrity unmatched in the horse industry. Together, they strive to help strike the right balance of horse, rider and family. From our first visit to the farm, they made us feel welcome and have provided much guidance and education. Jean's background is routed in a life long passion for horses and a strong business background. She is super organized and detail oriented which I especially appreciate as the person responsible for balancing work and family commitments. Jean sets the horse show schedule a year in advance and even provides detailed estimates for budgeting if you want. The transition to Wellington each winter goes smoothly with horses and riders well taken care of. My daughter has truly grown into a better, more confident rider because of Cory. He is a phenomenal trainer, accomplished rider and role model whose strong work ethic is infectious. He is constantly teaching, incorporating his vast industry knowledge with many life lessons. Goal setting and quarterly meetings are just another example of Cory's thoughtful approach to teaching. He never sends a rider into the ring without being overly prepared. Cory works tirelessly to make sure horse and rider are performing at their absolute best. He also provides direction and advice on everything from navigating the show circuit to the buy versus lease decision. It's no surprise that he is a well sought after trainer. The support staff at NBF is awesome as well. There can't be a better group of grooms anywhere. They take great care of the horses and everyone feels lucky to have them part of the team. Newbury Farm is small by design and a wonderful farm to be a part of. The clientele is a great mix of juniors and adults sharing their love of horses. Cory and Jean give such specialized service, which makes it a truly unique and special place.

Cory and Jean are awesome, and are far from snobs and ditzes. Not only are they great riders, they are great teachers, and are always friendly and easy to talk to. The way Cory teaches is superb- he always gives both praise and criticism, but the critique is never harsh and is expressed positively, and he never becomes frustrated, no matter how many times you have messed up or if you are running out of time. My mom has a horse in training there, and rides frequently, but I've only had a few lessons; yet my riding is already improving, and my ambition and willpower has risen to higher levels thanks to Cory and Jean's pep talks. This is a truly unique barn!

They have a great partnership with folks who want to take riding lessons. I was an adult student there and couldn't have been happier! If I had a horse, these are the only people I would trust to board it. Extremely professional, knowledgeable, and just plain awesome folks. I really felt like I had lucked out when I rode there -- other places were less welcoming, uninterested in an adult student and the arena felt like it was a high school clique again. Now their are riders out there who do nothing more than trail ride, or are accomplished enough that lessons are not needed, or they trailer out to their own trainers? Six of one, half dozen of the other?
