Run down facility, poorly cared for animals and thoroughly unpleasant staff. Just drive a little further north for better barns

We recently completed the OAT "Mediterranean Navigation: Malta, Sicily, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco &…read moreCoastal Spain Small Ship Adventure." It was our third trip with the company, but it was our first cruise ever. As with our previous OAT trips, the tour leaders were excellent! And the touring that we did was quite good. The problem for us was the style of touring. On land based tours, we are used to having much more time (usually 2, sometimes 3 nights) in the place that we are visiting. We love to eat in the local restaurants, people watch in coffee shops and wine bars, wander the streets at leisure, and really get a feel for the locale we are exploring and the people who live there. Although the 80+ passengers aboard ship were divided into four groups and left the dock at 10 minute intervals, we usually ended up at the same destination with one or two of the other groups. So it tended to be a bit crowded. Being on the ship, we were never less that a half mile walk just to get out of the port area. Many days we had to be back on the ship before dinner time because we were leaving for the next destination. Now the ship itself (MV Corinthian) was comfortable and the crew spectacular. They were all friendly and efficient. The food was quite good (but, of course, was not being cooked in local restaurants.) So if you are of the "I only want to unpack once" variety of traveler, this type of tour may be ideal for you. For us, I think we'll stick with OAT's amazing land-based tours.

Let me preface this by saying I had a fabulous trip and my first trip with OAT in October 0f 2025…read more It was a month long trip to Thailand, Cambodia, Loas and Vietnam. The tour guide Mai could not have been better. She took such good care of us the whole time. She made herself available to us 24 hours a day. She is unbelievably knowledgeable about her country, was able to answer all questions in an interesting and sometimes humorous way. This was the reason I decided to take your Japan trip. Maybe my expectations were set too high. The tour guide we had could not have been less interested in the people on the trip. This seems to be a nine to five job for Makiko, and she couldn't wait for the days to be over. We were a small group of 10 people and Makiko managed to lose people on three different occasions. She is in her early 40's and very physically fit. She never took into account that she was dealing with people in their 70's and 80's and so she walked at her top speed, never looked back to see if people were able to keep up with her and consequently lost people. She was also asked to slow down on several occasions but chose not to. One morning we left the hotel and had to turn around and go back because she had forgotten one of us. She never checked to make sure we were all there. This reoccured throughout the trip. Again she just didn't care, it's just a job to here. I wear hearing aids and Makiko was not using the whisper even after I asked her if she would do, I asked her twice . She said she doesn't like to use it. Consequently there were times, when we were outside that I heard nothing. An example is the tea plantation I might as well have not been there. She just didn't care. On top of all of this Makiko was not knowledgeable about her country. At times she was unable to answer questions or answered questions about her country incorrectly. We learned no history from her and on many occasions she was reading information from brochures or her phone. In addition to all of this she was always rushing us through places. One day we stopped for lunch and we were told to be at the bus at a certain time. The place we stopped in had a store. We were all on the bus on time and she was missing. I was very disappointed with this tour guide and this affected my feeling about the whole trip. Another criticism I have was the choice of some of the hotels. Most of the hotels we stayed in had no restaurants that were open for dinner and no bar. Therefore the group was unable to socialize with each other. The last hotel we stayed in,( The Hotel Prezio in Kyoto) was only open for breakfast and the food was so bad many of us went across the street to the Seven Eleven for breakfast. In this hotel we were responsible for taking our own trash out of the room and putting our used towels in a bag outside of the room each day. In addition to this we had to walk 5 blocks to and from the hotel each day to meet our bus. I found this unacceptable especially when you are dealing with people in their 70's and 80's. There were many hotels on main streets that we could have stayed in that were in the same area. I am scheduled to go on your trip to Jordan, Egypt and Alexandria in March but after the experience in Japan I'm now have to think about that decision. I can't believe how very different the two experiences I have had with OAT are. What will I get next? Wendy Oberfeld
