I love this place and have recommended Back in Balance for sports massage to so many of my running friends. After years of various overuse injuries derailing my running, I finally started getting massages at Back in Balance every 4 weeks, over a year ago. For me, the difference in the way I feel, my training and overall enjoyment of running has improved so much. What I go for isn't light massage with scented candles and new age music, but intense deep sports massage where knots and tight muscles are worked out and yea, sometimes it's rather uncomfortable, but I still find it relaxing and enjoyable. I have been coming to Back in Balance since it opened over 10 years ago. The owner and therapists are excellent and provide top notch service and the treatments are fantastic. Their staff is all well trained and when you get a massage here it really is therapeutic and helps minimize any pain or discomfort you are feeling and for those who do not have specific pain it is just nice to treat yourself to a relaxing massage both mentally and physically. After years of buying gift certificates for my wife, mother and sister to BIB, my wife surprised me with a 45 minute massage. I scheduled it several weeks in advance to coincide the day after some hectic travel for work. Friday, 10AM appointment - showed up 9:40 to give some extra time for paperwork, etc and proceeded to wait. Ended up waiting until 10:30 and was about to drive away (left phone messages) when a staff member came in. She stated the appointment was the day before (again - traveling for work, there's no way this would happen) and that I should have received a follow up phone call for the missed appointment (never did). To them, it was also odd that the person who I spoke with on the phone (female) was different than the actual person to give the massage ("Steve"). I ended up leaving and just got off the phone with the owner (Jennifer). My resolution was to request a refund for the gift certificate as the experience had "put a bad taste in my mouth". I also live 45 minutes away and did not want to travel again - I had already taken a day off of work for this. Jennifer's response was that they could add time to the massage or that I could give the gift certificate to someone else. She stated that they would not provide a refund. Mistakes happen - I get it - but I have the feeling that Jennifer's priority was finding out "who screwed up the schedule" rather than finding the best solution for a customer. While I certainly appreciate the offer to transfer the gift certificate - as a matter of principle I feel that this business is conducting itself unprofessionally and not following its own procedures for client notifications. This includes not contacting a client upon a missed appointment. As a result, I spent 90 minutes roundtrip driving there, taking a personal day from work (plan to go hiking later) and subsequently being made uncomfortable by the owner who seemed more focused on the problem that occurred rather than customer satisfaction. I will be taking my business, including the usual gift certificates that I purchase for my family, to another establishment. I suggest you do the same. read more

In general, poor customer service. The massage therapist I had did not ask me any questions about what I wanted. I had to stop her in the middle and tell her several times what was important to me because we did not discuss beforehand. When I suggested to her at the end that a discussion at the beginning of the massage might be better, she brushed me off. She implied she knew better then I did what was right for me. Also, I paid for a package and since I was unhappy, I wanted my money back for massage treatments not used. Owner was uninterested in my experience and was slow to refund my money. I had to file a complaint with my credit card to get my money back. All in all, I think this place likes to think of themselves as catering to the elite athlete. And since I am not an elite athlete, I got the feeling they would rather I go elsewhere. I was happy to comply. read more

Her treatments always begin with a review of my current physical condition or areas of concern and she usually, sometimes magically, discovers the trigger for my pain. Massage has keep me active and able to navigate when my pain could have kept me down. Her staff is made up of similarly trained practitioners who are always focused on their client's needs and concerns.
