This place is a great value! The food and service were very good. We had breakfast twice and dinner once while in town for a concert at Renfro Valley. We will for sure be back when in the area again.

We were in the general area visiting my fella's folks, when we realized we needed some sustenance before hiking. The Fella's restaurant of choice wasn't going to fit the bill for the day. His dad recommended a place by to boat dock at Lake Linville. That didn't initially sound super enticing or promising. But when you are in small towns and more rural areas, vaguer directions might just lead you to the best places! We drove to where Brad remembered a boat launch being. We saw a sign for Back Porch Barbeque and we both got a little excited. The restaurant has a diner-like set up inside and several places for outdoor seating. The only strange thing was the large, empty display cooler right when you walk in. But none of that mattered once we were seated. We were instructed to seat ourselves. The server came by quickly with menus and took our drink orders. They have pepsi products which is just fine by me. They also have Ale 8! She was patient with us when it took us a few minutes to make our decisions. I originally wanted the brisket, but they were out of it. So I settled on the pulled smoked pork BBQ dinner, on a plate. Each dinner meal comes with two sides. I got the fried okra and the fried cornbread as my sides. The okra was FANTASTIC and the cornbread is tasty and there is SO MUCH of it! And y'all...the dinners, with their massive amounts of each of the two included sides, are almost all under $10!! All this with service with a smile! If you are in the area, I highly recommend visiting here for a meal! You won't regret it! But you will leave with an exceptionally full stomach! And good news, they DO accept credit cards. Something we were worried about when we walked in. It looks like the kind of place that might be cash only. But worry not!

The food was not good. The meat was all dried out (chicken more so than pork). The water was undrinkable. The service was fine.

The pulled pork in my Sweet Carolina BBQ sandwich had the look and taste of long, slow cooking. Lots of color on the "bark", with a balanced mix of coarse chopped pieces and thinner shreds. I thought it slightly dry and maybe not as much smoke flavor as I'd like, but that could be the pitmaster's preference. Any dryness was fixed by adding some of the 4 available house-made sauces. I tried all and decided on the spicy barbecue. My meal arrived quickly, no more than 5 minutes at most. The sandwich comes with 1 side. I chose the potato salad, which was very good: mustardy and tangy with the potatoes "al dente." Two sizes were available, regular and large. I thought the regular was sufficient and a good deal at $11.50 with the side. The coleslaw was very small as usual, but, as it was intended to be put into the sandwich for the Sweet Carolina, was sufficient, and good. The menu also has burgers, ribs, wings, and some interesting sounding combination sandwiches. Like Fried Bologna BLT. And brisket. Wish I could have tried that. My only complaint is the menu is very sandwich-oriented. No way to order a plate: a meat and 2 sides, and maybe a slice of cornbread (actually hoe cakes here instead). Larger combo are available, like the Smoky B Sampler with ribs, 2 additional meats, garlic toast, and a side (just 1). Way too much for one person, and with just 1 side, not ideal for sharing either. Many interesting appetizers and small bites, including corn nuggets, fried pickles and green tomatoes, cheese curds with marinara. The inside was clean, a generic modern building. Outside tables were not set up - was it just too hot to sit outdoors? The floor could use some fixing up: it looked like they had scraped off carpeting and left the glue. Strange. Lots of TVs tuned to various sports, the sound turned off. Music playing at a medium level which I enjoyed. Very hard rock. How hard? 9.5 on the Mohs scale. And then all of a sudden it changed to Taylor Swift. That was jarring but ok. I like her too. Clientele at this midday hour seemed to be mostly working men on lunch break. I think I was the only one without blue jeans and a baseball cap. When I got up to pay at the counter my waitress reminded me that my drink (Coke) comes with a free refill in a go cup. I didn't really want more but she encouraged me so I was going to get ice water. I pressed the wrong button on the machine and got lemonade instead. Oh well, that's fine too.

It set the stage perfectly for what was to come. Our host was quick and helpful, immediately bringing us big cups of water, which was a nice touch. I ordered the prime rib sandwich and was impressed by its tenderness, pairing it with crispy onion rings. Nicole and our little one shared the mixed platter, which came with two ribs, two pieces of chicken (choice of dark or light), and pulled pork, plus sides of beans and mac & cheese. Everything was flavorful and satisfying. Even Floyd and Casey got to enjoy some scraps, which they happily devoured. Dessert was a highlight: two cinnamon apple bread pudding cakes with whipped cream. Rich, sweet, and indulgent -- we left feeling full enough to skip dinner and ready for a nap. The only drawback was the grease factor. Toast was overly buttered, and overall the food leaned heavy, so be prepared to grab plenty of napkins. While the flavors were excellent, the richness sometimes felt a bit overwhelming. Sonny's BBQ delivers hearty portions, smoky flavor, and a welcoming atmosphere with attentive service. It's a great stop for comfort food on the road, though a touch less grease would make it perfect.
