The hidden gem of West Virginia!…read more If you are anywhere near or close to Spruce Knob you must come here. It's a short little hike off the road on the wet or dry side. 5 minutes. It's an amazing cave that Gandy Creek runs through. The cave itself is about 3000 feet long. It's in Osceola, but use the address I provided to find it. It's past Spruce Knob lake at the bottom of the hill. Make a left and drive until you get to a 90 degree turn. There is small parking lot on your right. There are two gates, one in front of the parking lot that is wood with a trail through a field that leads you right to the cave and one up the road about a 100 yards or so where the metal gate with the dirt road is, that will take you right to the wet entrance as well. The dry side is before you get to the 90 degree turn on your right. There are two gates. It will be the first one where you can see the tail. There are two dry exits and one wet on that side. This is a captivating cave system inside. It's pretty straight forward though, you just follow the flow of the water. The best time to go is when the water is low and during the summer months. There aren't many parts that are above your knees(I'm 6'1"), but you navigate through most of the cave walking on dirt. FYI: the waters depth can fluctuate depending on the season and rain. If it's flowing good then expect the water to be to your waist in certain areas depending on your height. Try to avoid going after heavy rains. It will take you approximately 30-40 mins to get through this cave. It's an excellent adventure! Make sure to bring a headlamp or two and extra batteries if yours is not the rechargeable kind. I do not…read morerecommend if you don't have AWD or have an aversion to narrow spaces and heights, one side of the road is a high drop off. I also recommend taking a map of the preservation and trails with you, as the signs posted can be confusing. That being said once you arrive and find your way to the trail you have selected, the trails are very well maintained and marked, the scenery is spectacular. I did notice signs posted that hunting is allowed Oct -Mar and hikers should wear bright clothing during this time, I think I would just prefer to avoid the area during this time. The area was also a WWII training ground, signs are posted for visitors not to touch any ordnance they may find.

The wilderness features many different trails and lots of primitive camping. Access is from forest road 75, a gravel and dirt road that is mostly inaccessible in winter. The trails are well marked but not blaised, which can be a problem if you intend to night hike. Water is plentiful but has high levels of iron. Some of the trails are very boggy, especially the Dobbins grade trail. You are warned,! This area is so popular that on weekends it can be very crowded. Parking is limited so go early.

Please don't bring your own wood because it may have pests that could be passed to the tree populations there. Bring lots of water because there is none up on the mountain. There is a little market at the bottom of the mountain in Dry Fork that carries a variety of goods you might need. There are beautiful spots to hike down to enjoy the river, Res Creek. Viewing the sunrise across the road from the campground affords beautiful views, and a great spot on the rocks. I highly recommend it. In the evening, drive down to Bear Rocks preserve and park. Hike up to the rocks and enjoy the view. The campground has a couple of vault toilets that were kept pretty clean. The sites don't offer a whole lot of privacy, but they are surrounded by grass and trees. there are plenty of opportunities for hiking and wildlife feeling. At night you can hear the nighthawks and down at bear rocks at dusk you will see plenty of them doing their courtship dive. The creek is a hike from the campground. These are not along the creek at all.

Each has a fire ring and picnic table and what not. The foliage is nice but there is not a lot of thick tree cover in this alpine area which of course makes Dolly Sods unique so just don't expect large forest shade or pines. The vault toilets are clean and tidy. It will take you less than 1 minute to drive through the whole loop and pick your campsite. It's that small. You could walk to nearby trailheads but it might be easier to just hop in the car and park before your hike. Ample parking is available near the trails.

It showed that we would have a landline service at our cabin however, it did not work I reported it to the front desk and they told me that it was unknown problem throughout the resort that they were unable to get fixed. we stayed in the ERICA cabin and it was super clean very comfortable although the couch needed a great deal of updating the cabin was very cool with the AC running. The bed was super comfortable when it was very hot. The cabin was in a very secluded shaded area along the river. We did get amazing service at the resort restaurant by Autumn. She was our waitress every time we dine there and she provided amazing service and deserves a promotion. She is an exceptional waitress and make sure her customers are happy and meets the needs of their dining experience. The front desk seem to be unsure about any of our concerns regarding the phone not working the TV literally being 14 inches to corner and diameter in the bedroom. If you are like my husband and I we have to have the TV on to fall asleep at night and this caused a great deal of issues. The TV was so tiny. I am a germaphobic. to the point that I do not shower, barefoot or sleep on the sheets or blanket provided by the resort, hotel, motel and breakfast, etc. at this resort I felt completely comfortable walking around barefoot taking a shower barefoot and I even slept in the sheets that we're already on the bed even though we brought our own to put on the bed just in case the only changes we made is we took the beautiful quilt off the bed and use our blanket that we brought from home and that's only because from experience the quilts don't always get laundered every time the place is cleaned. Not to say that this does not happen at this resort but in past experiences, this has happened at other resorts hotels/motels so we just play on the safe side if you are a germaphobe you will feel quite at home there is no dishwasher in the ERICA cabin and there is no Wi-Fi at the ERICA cabin. I did utilize the washer and dryer to wash a blanket and it worked perfectly. They provided laundry detergent, fabric softener, and they had little bottles of shampoo and conditioner for use when showering One thing I do want to mention is that if you rent the ERICA cabin, you do have to carry all your belongings across a fairly long bridge to get to your cabin. The cabin is not accessible to motor vehicles. as far as the restaurant is concerned, we did not have a single bad meal. Everything was excellent but it was $20-$30 a plate depending on what you ordered and if you ordered a soda, it was almost 3 dollars Per person they did have a nice gift shop where you could buy shirts and different souvenirs and of course, if you are a fly fisherman, this is a fly fisherman's Paradise. We did not go there to fish. It was nice and relaxing to just stand there and watch the trout swim in the water overall I do recommend this place and I would go back again. It was a wonderful getaway for the weekend just to forget about everything that is going on in your present life and stress that you deal with daily. I completely forgot about all that while we were there what a wonderful experience!!

Our guides were fantastic. The group we were with was great also. Had good conversation, great interactions, their customer service was spot on, and just overall this was an experience I plan to redo in the future and will recommend to anyone interested. I will say that 15mins at the top isn't long so if you're wanting to go all the way up the rocks and spend some time sitting then you may want to hike instead. BUT - we took full advantage of the 15mins and our guides had no issues with us using every second to get our fill of the scenery.

We spent about 15 minutes at the top, which is not near enough if you want to explore the entire rock formation. They have the nicest bathrooms I've ever seen at a camp site. They are a little expensive (10/night/person + $10/13 logs of fire wood). I've never camped in that region before though, so that may be standard for the area.
