Streams and Dreams Bed and Breakfast, near Swallow Falls State Park, is nestled a few hundred feet from the Youghiogheny River on a trout stream tributary called Hoye's Run. A few miles form the tourist attractions of Deep Creek, my 16 year old daughter and I came to visit the old growth forests along the river instead, and chose this lodging for its beauty and peacefulness along the waterway. We had very recently visited Pennsylvania's Clarion River and Cook Forest old growth forest and wanted to compare the two preserved woodlands. Streams and Dreams was as advertised. Owner Don and Karen Hershfeld have settled in a little piece of paradise and are kind and attentive hosts. Understanding our desire to learn about the ecology of the area, Don, a retired limnologist, taught us much about the particular attributes of the Streams and Dreams stream that make it exceptionally high quality and took us on a ramble to see the river as well. Karen, knowing we were vegetarian, went out of her way to provide us with the yogurt, fruit and cereal we usually eat in the morning. This same sense of hospitality was also manifested in the abundantly stocked kitchen commons. I have visited many bed and breakfasts, but hers was the most generously stocked, with teas, coffee, and instant hot chocolate and apple cider mixes. As for the accommodations, the room was immaculate. Since we were visiting mid-week on a Tuesday, we were offered a larger room with private bath at no extra charge. This room had a sleeper sofa so that my daughter and I could have our own beds. It also had windows overlooking the babbling stream. After a restful night's sleep, Don provided us a hand-drawn map of some trails "less taken" that would offer us other glimpses of the forest we had come to see. Then as a special treat, he offered to show my daughter and me how he teaches fly casting. It was a great lesson! A real treat for my daughter and for me. Then we were off to the forest, and we did take Don's advise and had one of the loveliest walks you could hope for. We saw warblers and cedar waxwings along the water and waterfalls and in the sunny blow down areas from last autumn's super storm Sandy, woodland butterflies and wildflowers. This October, we hope to make a return visit to Streams and Dreams about Columbus Day weekend. Don says that it is usually at this time that Hoye's run is alive with the activity of brook trout spawning. His advise is to be sure to bring a camera because the leaves will be turning then, and the colors of creek will become especially beautiful. Something to look forward to indeed! read more

This a nice bed and breakfast place, but we stayed at the cottage, since we came with children and needed room to room to run around. The cottage was comfortable and simple. The kitchen was well organized. Don was very kind giving us a tour of his beautiful estate/land. He also entertained the kids for three days with nature exploring, trout feeding, boating, kayaking, bird watching, etc Kids fell in love with trout Molly and did not want to leave! He is very good with children! They walked mesmerized listening to his stories and explanations of things around. Yes, my husband and son did get a very detailed lesson on fly fishing and he enjoyed it very much! If you need a lesson on fly fishing, Don is your guy! We stayed in July and were surprised with no humidity and pleasant crispy air in the mornings. The river is a short walking distance and we enjoyed splashing and swimming there, too. There are plenty of parks and lakes around to visit. Don gives a very good advice on anything you are planning to visit or see. read more

Don is seriously a fly fishing guru and a unbelievably good teacher. He is precise in his explanations of biology and the physics of the sport (if you're interested) and he is patient and full of metaphors. If you want to learn how to fly fish like a professional, then go see Don. He charges far too little for what you get in return. We also stayed in the cottage by the brook and found it to be simple and affordable. Especially liked the cool air (even in the summer) and listening to the night sounds. The grounds are large, with lots to explore and do. We didn't spend any time in the Deep Creek area, but it seems like there are plenty of outdoor activities (whitewater kayaking, recreation boating on the lake, swimming, hiking, etc). This place is close to all the action, but still quiet and serene. Don is a great host and is happy to give you advice on what to do in the area and where to eat (we found the eating options to be pretty decent). If you want to learn to fly fish or stay in the area, I highly recommend it. read more

Very peaceful place, considering the Deep Creek Lake is full of power boats and jetskis. nature at its best! butterflies, hummingbirds, flowers, and water streams. Lots of birds, so bring your binoculars! The Cottage is next to the Youghegheny river. Its knee deep, some place waist deep, so it was perfect for the children. We stayed here twice in summer and both times had the river all to ourselves! Btw, the water rises a few times a week 1-2 Feet due to scheduled water releases, so it becomes perfect time for tubing and kayaking. Folks bring their water gear and go down the river during the water releases. The cottage was comfortable for a small family and can fit a big family or even a group. The place is on 15 acre property, where you can just sit and relax or enjoy a nature walk. There is a microbrewery restaurant 7 min drive, if you dont feel like cooking. The owners are super pleasant! Don will give you info on anything else you want to do in the area. read more

My fiancé and I stayed at Streams & Dreams b&b the first weekend of the year and had an AMAZING time! We had the largest of three rooms that was very cozy with our own bathroom and a faux fireplace. Don was an excellent host! He was great at giving us tips on what to do and see during our stay ( he showed us maps of gorgeous, free hiking trails and offered to take us ice fishing! ) not to mention he makes a mean omelet! The b&b is very calming and comfortable. We felt so relaxed and at home during our stay. There is plenty to do on the property with the beautiful stream, gazebo and bridge running through the back yard. And it is located only moments from Wisp. Don and Karen showed great hospitality and it was a pleasure meeting them. We had an amazing time and will certainly return to see the streams & dreams in the spring time! read more

This was really nice place to stay, very peaceful. The rooms are very nicely appointed and the hosts are very welcoming, we loved the outdoor cats! The breakfast was great - we are vegetarians and they were accomodating. They even taught us the art of making pancakes. Overall very impressed by the beauty of the place. It was winter when we went and there was no shortage of activities. We will definitely go back in the spring or summer. Highly recommended! read more
