First, walking into the office the receptionist was very friendly and helpful with filling out the additional paperwork they need that is not on their website. After completing that I waited a few minutes then Dr. Johnson took me back to an exam room where she asked me some additional questions about my initial accident and the issues I have had since then along with any information from my ortho that would be beneficial for treatment. From there she brought me out into the therapy room and did a few test for range of motion, did a nice shoulder massage, some exercises, then ice before concluding our appointment. She also gave me a print out of the exercises for me to do at home until my next appointment. Walking into my first PT appointment i was a little nervous seeing everyone out doing their treatments together since i tend to be a little on the shy side and have social anxiety however, Dr. Johnson kept talking to me and all the other PT's are talking with each other so it is easy to join in the conversation especially with the other patients whom were all friendly as well. This will be my home twice a week for the next 3 to 6 weeks depending if I need surgery or not then maybe a little while longer. I highly recommend not only Dr. Johnson but the other PT's at the Fairfax location as well. I did not see one with a bad attitude or seem like they are just there to collect a paycheck. SCHEDULE ASAP!

Here's why: - Variety of exercises: I admit that I'm not always the best patient. Part of the reason why I go to PT is the accountability aspect. I know I'm going to have to tell them if I've been keeping up with my exercises. I mean, they can tell anyways. Points for honesty? *nervous laugh* However, I liked that Jason mixed up the exercises often so I wouldn't get bored. I think a lot of patients are given the same exercises and think, "Why do I pay you when I can just do these at home?" and just stop going to PT. While it is important to establish a baseline to see how you are progressing, it's also important (to me) for therapists to continuously challenge me. He also made sure that I was able to do more dynamic exercises vs just controlled exercises before giving me the green light to play soccer again. Due to work conflicts or scheduling, I'd sometimes have to come in two days in a row. Jason was always mindful of this and would work on one area the first day and a different body part the following day. Also re: not being the best patient - he's realistic about your home program and how often you'll actually do the exercises. - One-on-one time and knowledge: Although this might differ from each location, I felt that I was able to have enough face time with Jason to explain what was going on and how I progressed (or didn't progress) since my last visit. I hate being rushed or feeling like I need to bring in a list of my questions just so I remember during my two minute interaction with a doctor. Jason always had the time to answer questions and talk about a strategy for the upcoming weekend, which is when I would have my soccer games. His explanations were clear and easy enough to understand, but never in a condescending way. And believe me, I always had questions. He never seemed annoyed. - Overall personality and interpersonal skills: We actually had a discussion about how doctors don't take classes on interpersonal skills and handling different types of patients. I was going to PT 1-2x/week a few months so I'd rather not see a monotone robot on a weekly basis. He's personable, super easy to work with, and is a pretty funny guy, too. He always had great awareness about when to push me and when to back off. My only complaint is that he did not consult me before switching to a new location. Just kidding (but I'm still sad about it). But ending on a good note: I did overhear this older, Asian lady saying he has "magic hands". And trust me, being Asian, I can say this as a fact - there was no sexual innuendo in the comment. Also, older, Asian ladies have high standards and expectations, and have no problem saying what they think. So, let "magic hands" fix your broken body!

Dr. Chavone and Dr. Gwen are a great team and run the best PT place in NOVA. Highly trained, experienced, knowledgeable and friendly therapists. I've been seeing them post achilles surgery for about 3 weeks. In addition to needing PT to regain full use of my ankle and foot, 8 weeks in a boot left me with an injured kneed from walking funny and significant muscle atrophy. Not only have I been making great progress, but I actually feel myself getting stronger. Both Dr's are great at giving encouragement, motivation and a little helpful push when you need it. They also really listen to their patients and their patients bodies. Finally, Dr. Chavone and Dr. Gwen are always happy to answer any questions in detail- in layman's terms all the way up to an in depth medical discussion. Everything is SUPER CONVENIENT: plenty of parking, unlike trying to get in/out of fair oaks hospital complex; plenty of hours available; and an elevator in back that takes you right to the office. Their office itself is very clean, has everything needed to provide excellent care and very bright, open and welcoming. It looks like a small, very modern gym with up-to-date brand new equipment. My initial therapy is about halfway finished, but I hoping I can continue to do more balance and strength workouts. I really like this crew. OK, in one of their rooms is what looks like some kind of suspension training system. When I asked, they said it was the REDCORD NEURAC system. If you don't play for the Washington Capitol Hockey team, you can't find this anywhere within 50 miles of the DC/NOVA area. it is one of the most innovative and effective (peer reviewed) systems for treating challenging muscle/skeletal pain. I really wanna try it for or Post Laminectomy Syndrome (back pain/leg sciatica). If I do, i'll post a follow-up review. http://www.redcordamerica.com/neuromuscular-activation/neurac-system.php One important thing that I didn't know until Dr. Johnson told me this the other day. Think you can benefit from PT? Just self-refer and call them. The Doctors are able to do an independent assessment, and prescribe up to 30 days of initial therapy as well as recommend you to a local MD who can prescribe further therapy. I cannot recommend more highly!

I was a skeptic as i began my recovery with them after being in a boot and unable to walk on it for two months. Walked in for my first apt in a boot nearly 3 months ago and now i'm out of the boot and getting very close to full mobility in my ankle, ALL BECAUSE of THEM!!! Their knowledge, support, encouragement and true commitment to help me, allowed me to heal better, faster and more completely than would have EVER happened without them. I have heard awful stories about physical therapists that friends have gone to so i didn't have much faith in the process, but i got REALLY lucky when i picked this practice. Rob is my Doctor there, and he, along with Melissa and Kellie, as therapists, have worked together to solve my recovery issues. It is ALL because of them that i will have a full and complete recovery with full mobility. As a 59 year old that has been very active my entire life, a full recovery was critical to me and my quality of life. I trusted them enough to do whatever it took to heal my injury and was consistent in the home assignments I was given. If anyone reading this has a current or old injury and you want to fully recover, THIS is the place to do it. Its a large, well lit, fully equipped facility. Ijust cannot thank and praise them enough!!!

This place was recommended by a PT from another organization where scheduling had become difficult…read more My teenage kid had ACL surgery and was three weeks post-op when we came here. As a travel athlete, the goal of rehab is not only healing but returning to peak performance. The first PT who assessed my kid was not friendly - I would probably say she was a bit condescending, and made us feel bad for allowing knee bending exercises, something both the surgeon and the previous PT had encouraged. She instructed us to stop all bending exercises, including heel slides, until further notice. When she sarcastically asked my kid to lift a straight leg and immediately pointed out the inability to do so, my kid explained that the foot was stuck on the table base. No chance to let her try again, PT moved on to whatever was next on her list of things to do. Despite nothing appearing abnormal in recovery, the PT dismissed our explanations and remained condescending throughout. I simply said we'd email the doctor's protocol to her rather than argue. We later learned from the second PT - not from scheduling, check-in, or even the first PT herself - that the initial PT was leaving in a couple of weeks as she was a traveling PT, and we'd be reassigned to someone else. Given that ACL rehab typically lasts 7-12 months (a timeframe she herself confirmed), it was disappointing that this wasn't disclosed upfront. It reflected a lack of continuity and care for the patient experience. The second PT was much kinder and even seemed surprised by the "no bending" instruction. He gave my kid very basic quad engagement exercises on the table with light stretching. However, he was clearly managing multiple patients at once, leaving my kid waiting between exercises. The appointment also ran to about 80 minutes, despite being told it would last an hour, and only ended because I mentioned we had to get to school. Afterward, I contacted the doctor, who advised us to stop going there immediately since not bending the knee could harm recovery. I would not recommend this place, especially for young athletes.
