It remained closed until 2008 where it was restored and now it full of performances from comedy shows, plays and music. On this first time visit I came here to see Bobby Lee's stand up performance. Our seats were in the balcony level way above. At this level it is a little diffcult to see the stage as you have to angle your head down wards to see the stage. Viewable but its very far. The seats are very tiny and it difficult to walk across as every inch is used up in the theatre. Acoustic were great and the overall detail and restoration is amazing to look at. Great theatre venue overall but would recommend not sitting in balcony.

We honestly didn't get much time inside the theater itself; the panel was an hour long, and they ran a tight ship. But, I will say that I loved the feel of the space. It's a smaller, more intimate theater than some of the other performance spaces downtown, and it doesn't seem like they have a "bad seat" in the house, just based on the layout. The acoustics were good so that we were able to hear all the women on the panel, even if they weren't so good at using the microphones. The seats were comfortable, and there was enough leg room for people to scoot by to seats in the middle of the row without having to step, trip or stumble over those who were already seated. All in all, I liked the space a lot, and am now trying to figure out when we can visit for an actual performance (not that I didn't love the panel, but theaters are made for performing arts, and I so want to see a show here!)

A little gem in the Gaslamp area. I never knew it existed…read more A last minute decision to go see a play. Well the play was planned since it was a requirement for a theater class. We were searching for a play and we came across "39 steps", a film directed by Alfred Hitchcock originally written by John Buchan. It was a melodrama about spies but this play was a spoof of the original. We went to the box office and inquired about tickets (this was 15 minutes before the show), I asked for the best least expensive seats in the house. After a few minutes of searching the gentleman behind the counter came up with row J, seats 113 and 114. We went in the theater and noticed the small lobby (cozy with beverage and snacks). We took our seats which was second to the last row and it was in the middle. All I can say is that there aren't any bad seats in the house and I was pleasantly surprised. The place is dated but it does its purpose, to deliver a night out with family and friends. It is a no frills establishment. No kiosks selling programs, souvenirs, or binocular rentals. You go in purchase your wine or coffee and you are set. I am definitely coming back for date night.

I have been going to the Lyceum since Horton Plaza was still around. The last play I saw was Viet Gone, and the first play since COVID was The Great Khan which I got a pleasure to attend. If you enjoy performing arts, come and see it for yourself. I wish I could take some shots during the performance, but it was strictly prohibited. The facility was designed very unique, you get to walk down and even further deeper down to reach the main stage, yet everything else got pretty well maintained except for the construction next door right now, I really don't know what they're going to do with the old Horton Plaza, although it was dearly missed. Parking was easy, some meters are expired after 6 PM, if you don't mind walking a few blocks like me, some expired at 8 PM, then you might have to put in a few bucks, but that's downtown for you, I think everyone else would rather pay valet and enjoy their sit down during the show, am I right?

Take the trolley to skip having to find parking but there is a lot next door or you can walk a couple blocks and there is a lot where the old Horton Plaza mall is where it's $10 as a flat rate! Any who, the theatre is just so beautiful, the seating is comfortable and spacious. I was able to purchase my goodies before the play and there are plenty of food and drink options as well. I saw someone eating a pizza! Can't wait to come back, hoping to see Hadestown, Six, Legally Blonde the Musical !

I would say there were a good 10 people pretty pissed off trying to listen to things while they're listening to kettle chip bags being opened and closed and opened and closed and potato chips being chomped on. As always with the Civic, the getting out of the theater is always terrible to try to get to the parking lot the elevators always packed and then you figure out the people are going up a flight of stairs and getting on to the elevator up above so you have no chance from being in ground level and getting on to them and then you get into the parking structure and finding your car and waiting to get out but just the initial getting out of the theater and having to walk up all the stairs to your parking level then the smell of urine throughout the stairwell is always lovely. I'm a native San Diegan and have been coming to the theater as long as I can remember and they need to have a new theater somewhere away from downtown to have events the downtown experience is terrible the homeless situation is terrible the urine situation is terrible it's time to move the Civic. And also don't allow people to bring food into the theater it's not a movie.

We weren't able to print our tickets early so we went to the counter and that's when it went down hill. The guy that was suppose to be helping us was one of the rudest people I've come across. There was a misunderstanding regarding our tickets and rather than helping and explaining why it may have happened, he chose to stay on the loud speaker belittling us so that everyone could hear. I was so appalled I requested a refund. After walking away I had a few other customers come up to us in shock at how discourteous and unprofessional he was. Which showed me I was right to be displeased. Sadly after this experience I will not be coming back, which saddens me as I'm a huge performing arts fan and had once liked this theater.

The Rep itself is an intimate theater with hardly a bad seat in the place and has an associated snack area with wine/beer and some drinks available. The seasonal fare for us is usually entertaining and enjoyable, leaning I think to lighter comedy most of the time, with the occasional drama thrown in, I guess to let us really see the actors working! But, light comedy that is usually quite fun. The most recent example is "Scapin" adapted from Moliere, which is a delightful romp with great characters, and fast pacing. Give it a try, and you'll be glad that you did, and support our local theater.....
