We discovered this place by accident based on some suggestions from family and friends in Pennsylvania who frequent Amish and Mennonite markets. We drove about an hour from Cordova to get there but it was beyond worth it. We purchased fresh bread and pastries, tea, canned goods, juices, the most amazing yeast I have ever used for baking, amongst a few other things. We couldn't purchase any of the deli items this time around due to us having had many other stops along the way back, however we are absolutely returning on a regular basis to purchase from here again. The fresh rosemary and garlic bread was absolutely delicious. The lemon fried pie was so good I almost didn't share with my husband. The tea has been so surprisingly great. I used to work at Teavana back when it existed, so I'm familiar with tea and this tea from Backermanns has become my favorite tea to drink now. This time around we purchased the "back porch blend" tea and the "strawberry cream" types and they are both divine especially during these chilly fall evenings. I highly recommend this market. There's so many handmade items, natural items and fresh items (along with frozen meat and deli meats and cheeses!) that it's worth the drive from the Cordova and further areas. What's not to like about this place!? We dropped by on a Saturday morning to check out their mini pies for a wedding next month and I could not stop putting things in my basket! My dad and I went there a couple of weeks ago, and most of the tables inside were marked as 'reserved'. When we asked about this, we were told that a group of 40 people called earlier to reserve the tables. My dad was furious about this, and told them we wouldn't be coming back. Saturday last, I paid $12.00 for a coconut cream pie. What I discovered was that the pie pastry had never been cooked. It appears that the pastry was made, put into the pie pan, and then put into the freezer for later use. It then had a filling of what appeared to be Jello instant pudding, with a tad of coconut flavoring, and a few sprinkles of coconut. This pie was not acceptable to either my daughter or me. This is not the correct way to make a coconut pie. I would be ashamed to have sold such a thing in my store (for $12, no doubt). If Backermann's wishes for me to, I can make a real coconut pie and show them how it's done. This was horrible. I do not have $12.00 to waste and throw away. Yet, this pie is bad enough to go into the trash. ***You may also note that not everything in the stores have a Backermann's name on them. Some things (butter specifically) which are sold at their store are also sold in Kroger and other places; therefore, they are not making these things, but simply order them from another company. WHATEVER you purchase there, DO NOT purchase any of their pies. They are made incorrectly, and the pastry isn't even cooked.. read more

First a comment and then the review. If you want to be "safe" during this pandemic and expect those around you to social distance and wear a mask, this is NOT the place for you. We went on a Saturday and it was packed. Maybe 10 out of 100+ people there wore a mask. None of the workers did. Few of the customers did. So keep that in mind. If you don't mind the closeness, this is a GREAT place for a good lunch and shopping. We got lunch and sat outside on their covered patio. Lunch for 3 was a large grilled cheese sandwich, a reuben with potato salad, and the soup bar. Everything was so delicious. The grilled cheese was large. The reuben wasn't on rye bread, but it was still very tasty. The potato salad was the best. Had to get 2 more to take home. I got the soup bar, and I would return here just for it. 6 different types of homemade soup with cheese and crackers if you want them. That day they had white chicken chili, regular chili, baked potato soup, stuffed pepper soup, vegetable beef, and one other I'm forgetting. The vegetable beef is so, so good! So is the baked potato soup. It's serve yourself, so again, if you're worried about covid19, probably not something you'd choose. After lunch, we looked through the grocery section. Wasn't really looking to buy anything, but saw that they had bulk spices. I'm sure they are re-packaged, but that's cool. Their prices beat Penzey's by a mile, as well as those of any grocery store around. I stocked up and will be back when it's time to replace my other spices. I've bought their breads and cookies before and they taste much better than what you get at the grocery store. It's worth the drive if you're not from around here. read more

My family and I just ate here in the new building Saturday for lunch. I've eaten here and bought groceries many times over the years. The new building is amazing. This was absolutely their busiest day ever with the new building and the festivals going on, but they still managed to feed everybody and sell the groceries to. What a crowd that day! They have enlarged the seating and dining room and there were enough tables to accommodate the crowd. The bread and butter is number one to me here. I also love the cheese and candies. There are canned soup and dry soup. Everything is so much above commercial quality it is not even comparable. The bread will mold in a week as it is supposed to, but will last in the freezer. Makes you wonder what they put into commercial bread to make it last so long. Organic meats, pickled food, and high quality chips and sodas. Or try the house made cookies and cinnamon rolls. Fried pies yum. I especially like the ham and bean soup. Jams,jellies, crackers, and my favorite, peanut brittle!! They serve mostly soup and sandwiches for lunch. The meat and cheese are great quality, but the bread is what really brings me in. I always get a cup of that amazing ice cream at the old store and was disappointed Saturday to find that there was no ice cream. Hopefully that is just part of getting moved in and set up and the ice cream will be there soon. There are buildings for sale and all kinds of other stuff. They have a new playground for the kids and even a miniature farm. They are Christian based. Amish I think. Real good people. Finally got to enjoy the food too My wife and I have been to Bäckermann's before, but only to BUY the food. Recently we were able to go back to EAT the food - and it's pretty good. We were there on a Saturday so we wanted to try the Yoder Burger (only served Friday and Saturday). The 1/3 pound burger is nicely complimented by delicious condiments, including their homemade pickles (conveniently for sale). Oh, but the best part for me was the "Smoked Bacon Cheddar Cheese". As I was eating, I kept trying to find the "bacon". The bacon is "IN" the cheese. We actually bought some of the "Smoked Bacon Cheddar Cheese" to take home. Indeed, the Smoked Bacon is crumbled up and mixed into the Cheddar Cheese. A different twist, and a nice taste. And of course, we couldn't leave without taking home a sample of all their good food offerings. If you haven't been there yet, add it to your next "road trip" - and go hungry, so you can enjoy the good food when you get there. read more

I felt very uncomfortable as if I didn't belong there. From the time I got out of the car until the time I got back into the car. I tried to play it off but it was obvious My family felt the same way. There was only one extremely nice guy there. The cashier was alright. We could not get a signal to transfer money to our account. So we had to use the store phone. They looked as us like we were crazy but gave us the phone. Nobody greeted us as we walked in. The food was good and the drinks but the hospitality was not there. I tried to not be bias thinking but they have the right name Whiteville. Everybody just stared at us. I don't know if they were exhausted and overwhelmed from all of the media and publicity but they said they never short cut with their customers. I saw this on Facebook on my friend's timeline and was excited to go. I was disappointed that I didn't get any homemade ice cream. That was the main reason for this long drive. Well I won't be going back there. The customers were staring and acting bias. This is 2017 and I won't be treated like my black isn't beautiful and worthy to shop. I purchased some items as I took the long trip, but that is definitely my first and last trip. This is the best kept secret in west Tennessee. Owned and operated by Mennonites who know how to bake the old fashioned way. I love all the breads I have tried. I am not positive, but I believe that everything they sell is either Mennonite or Amish made. Lots of jams, jellies, fresh cheeses, and baked goods. They also make to order fresh deli Sandwiches. My families favorite is the monster cookies. Large thick cookies with oatmeal, peanut butter, chocolate chips, and M&M's. These cookies will change your life. Before you start reading, you should know that I like a nice big New York Jewish deli or Whole Foods kind of sandwich; and so I'm really not their demographic. But I didn't know this at the time. I ordered a turkey sandwich with lettuce, tomato, mustard and mayonnaise. Once I went to sit down, I could see that I didn't like how the sandwiches looked, really skimpy, and the meat looked discolored in that highly-processed way; and I hoped for the best. Once it came, I was surprised that mayonnaise was oozing out of it at different parts of the sandwich, like between the bread and turkey, between the turkey and lettuce, etc. I guess people like their mayonnaise! To make matters worse (for me, at least), when I took a bite, it was SWEET mayonnaise, and that is disgusting to me. I don't like my sandwich to be sweet. I had one bite and threw it out. Absolutely perfect! My family and I love this place. We bring all our family and friends when they come visit. We love to purchase alot of bread and freeze what we aren't using right away. They really know what they are doing. They have the best bread we have ever had. My husband and my children and I brought my sister in law and my nephew there Saturday. It was their busiest day ever. We ate sandwiches and soup. I loved my sandwich so much that I went and got a second. They make sandwiches as you order how you want it. They have a large selection of breads, meats, cheeses, condiments, and other toppings. We have always had a wonderful experience. Made a special trip today on our way home from Memphis to Huntsville. We wanted to check out the petting zoo and play area for kids. Very disappointed. the store was very clean but the petting zoo and play area was so overgrown I would never take my grandkids there. We were not greeted upon entering the store. There were several (about 6) young women working behind the counter and all they did was talk amount themselves. The canned items were a bit pricey which would have been okay if some samples were offered. $7 for a pint of salsa is expensive if you cannot find out what it tastes like before you purchase it. I really had high hopes for a nice day trip with the grandkids but after visiting, not a place I will go back. read more

Ate at Bakermann's for lunch again. Had my second Yoder Burger, with cheese, tomato, red delicious onion and lettuce. With catsup, mustard. The burger was juicy and tender. I also has their Loaded Bake Potato Soup. That was so yummy. I've had their chilli many times. It's so good it's unreal delicious. The drive is beautiful. The staff is so friendly and warm. I've never had anything there that isn't mouth watering delicious. I come from Atoka, to visit here. The baked goods are best I've ever had. I leave there feeling like I've been on vacation. Visited this place for the first time today! Loved it! The fall mums outside were gorgeous and selling like hot cakes. We started with the every Saturday market where one of the vendors had fresh homemade tamales that were authentic and amazing. Then we decided to go inside. It was Saturday so of course the place was packed. We ran into the $6,000 peanut butter pie and taste tested her recipe. Let's just say there is a reason for the name. we then decided to sit down and try the sandwiches from the deli, I had a grilled cheese with rosemary garlic bread and broccoli soup. The only complaint I have is more cheese on the sandwich. The bread and soup were great. My husband had the fried bologna sandwich which was very tasty. At the market we bought a ton of spices they carry for an amazing price! It was definitely worth the trip from East Memphis to Whiteville. read more
