The ladies I've encountered at House Mountain have all proven to have endless amounts of patience with my lack of knowledge and never seem bothered by my level of naivety, which is the only reason I'm finally comfortable shopping anywhere in-person. Granted, the assortment in the shop is less than a large, bigger box store. However, I've been really impressed by the volume and quality of their hand-dyed varieties, not to mention that they even carry at least one (maybe more) skein dyed uniquely for this store. You can always ask them if they have any sales running. Sometimes there's a special or two, but remember, quality products cost a bit more and it's important to support small business whenever we can. Regardless, you'll no doubt find at least a few supplies here to be "a cut above the rest." Perhaps their needle collection or their many fingering weights will catch your eye. Somehow they can even tell you about the local dyers; I have found that rather impressive. I wish I lived closer, as I would truly love to take part in their retreats and classes. They have a monthly newsletter with event details, including several summer camps for the kiddos. Ask about their classes the next time you stop by. The ladies I've seen in and around the store have all been delightful. It seems to be a town of fiber lovers!

After being awarded the Yelp Triad Squad Yelper of the Year 2024 Award at the Yelpies Award Ceremony last year, an event that honored the highest-performing Yelp Elites, celebrating their contributions and accomplishments throughout the year, I decided that this year, as an All-Star Yelp Elite, I not only wanted to be the first to discover new restaurants, businesses, and entertainment venues, and bring them to the attention of the public, but also to uncover those found in hidden paths that for one reason or another have not reached the public in its totality. And the Knittin' Coop, in Salem, Virginia, is a perfect example. I discovered this, one-of-a-kind, women-owned business one day after having had breakfast at the Bean Bliss Coffee Bar on S College Ave, in Salem, Virginia. It was the shop next door, and I couldn't help but to go in and visit after seeing their colorful and lively Holiday Season decorations on the windows of their shop. Inside, I found a cozy shop for yarn and fiber arts, plus classes and event led by the friendly owner, who greeted and welcomed me with open arms. Besides having a special talent for selecting a wide collection of beautiful merchandise, she is a survivor entrepreneur of the covid era which began shortly after she started her business. This hardship led her to create one of the most beautiful and practical websites that I have ever seen. Not only creating a place for customers to purchase her merchandise contactless, but establishing a strong relationship with her customers this way, so now they can visit her shop to gather for one of her workshops, borrow a book from her lending library, feel the products before purchasing them, or simply spend some time chatting with the owner who has a wonderful personality. Beside the great variety of very unique and quality, colorful yarn, of which I had never seen before in larger, corporate shops, she also carries items such as books, accessories, sweaters, scarfs, just to name a few. I invite you to view my photographs accompanying this review to get a better sense of the place and the variety and quality of the products sold there. The place is also decorated with artworks with meaningful and some funny quotes. There is also a good size room on the side where people can gather to attend one of the owners workshop, or simple to relax and knit. I went into Magpie Knits got the first time yesterday to look for some yarn because I just started…read moregetting into crocheting. They have so many colors and types of yarn that seem like really good quality. The range I personally saw was anywhere from $9-$34, but I didn't walk around there checking every price. I did end up getting a $9 cranberry color yarn that is super soft and they put it into a ball for me (I forgot what that's called....remember, beginner here haha). Overall, I definitely would go back again! Maybe not all the time as I'm starting out, but, if I do get better, then for sure. I also asked about classes and they said if more are interested in crochet classes they will add some, or I could do a private lesson. I also feel the need to say something about that one star review below that would cause any hesitation from going there. While I was not greeted after coming in (something that doesn't bother me personally), except by an adorable doggy, there are people in there that you can go up to and ask for help if you needed to. I will say this, I definitely wandered around staring at yarn for a few minutes waiting to see if someone would ask if I needed help and eventually someone did after making eye contact. So, in my opinion, you definitely have to just find someone and ask for help. Everyone was really nice though.

Its a fantastic way to be seen, to have your product or vision shared with the community at large and maybe see a profit. While there I found several pieces of art I wanted, and a few I purchased due to being on a traveling budget. I got a lovely necklace and a piece of hanging art speaking of love.
