With time to spare and in search to bring my summer wardrobe to life I stopped by this 42nd Street/ Eighth Avenue, Port Authority subway station mezzanine level before you exit the MTA subway turnstile. This location is the annex to the Jackson Heights, Queens location which is smaller tighter space and no fitting rooms. There is a large dressing room mirror and the sales associate/ cashier stated you can wear the clothing over your body or wrap around your body for size approximation. I choose one simple black and white skirt $10.00 which unbeknownst to me it contains a small stain. The stain is visible when one closely exams it. I doubt the longevity usage wear of this skirt. Jewelry zinc and silver are a good selection, and clothing appeared ethnic inspired but not stored properly. read more

Jewelry is my business, I've worked in the industry for many years and I still love their zinc jewelry. Excellent quality I still have pieces from a year or two ago (purchased from other locations). I love that some of the zinc necklaces are some of the same silhouettes you will find in your gold and silver plate as well as some really unique silhouettes. It's easy to shop this store, it's not huge but the layout utilizes all the space. The guy at the counter let's you do your thing. He sits and chills on the computer. I mention this because usually with smaller stores they are on you and watching like hawks at every thing you look at and touch. The product is a mix of ethnic jewelry, accessories and clothing with some trend costume jewelry you can find along broadway. You can find printed pashminas as well as basic A-line and sheath dresses with cool patterns. Store is merchandised well, you can see every thing hanging clearly. Necklaces aren't tangled on the pegs, neither are the hangers on the racks ( a huge pet peeve of mine ). I purchased two pairs of very comfortable, handmade in Turkey shoes along with a zinc necklace. Very happy!!!! read more

I've been to this store a few times - including yesterday - and they have a nice selection of very colorful clothes & accessories, plus the prices are quite reasonable. The people working there are variable in terms of friendliness, but meanwhile the selection and prices are much better than at most places. read more

Backwoods Accessories, located in the 74th St Subway Station, Jackson Heights, Queens NY. This is the best accessories store that I have been to in all of NYC. Born & raised to shop, in NYC, I have a lot of experience knowing where to get good accessories, at the right price, and excellent quality. The gentleman that works their, doing the week, is so helpful and courteous! Even though the store is small, the shopping experience is tremendous! The jewelry is exceptional. The way the light hits the jewelry, it makes me want to buy everything that glitters. I purchased 3 lovely/trendy sweaters that are gorgeous. My co-workers asked where I got the black long shiny cardigan. They want to go to Backwoods ASAP. I can't wait to take the train just from Brooklyn to Jackson Heights, so I can shop there again. It's fun-either bring a friend and make an afternoon out of it, or shop alone, and experience whatever Backwoods has to offer. Finally! A store with beautiful, ethnic inspired clothing and jewelry that is affordable and close to where I work. Backwoods in located in the Port Authority subway station on the lower level, through the turnstiles, just above the uptown A,C and E trains (downstairs from the Bolton's). I decided to walk in because I saw a large wall of earrings as I was passing by. Those items weren't my style - lots of blingy bridesmaid type stuff. But when I ventured further toward the back of this small store - JACKPOT! Beautiful jewelry from Turkey - DIFFERENT beautiful jewelry (i.e. not what you'll find at H&M or Forever 21) between 5 and 10 bucks per pair. There was also a vast selection of very pretty Indian style dresses and tunics and unusual zinc statement necklaces hanging on the wall for twenty bucks, but I think that's a bit much for them. However, you probably won't see everyone else wearing them, and for that alone I guess it's worth it. The salesman was very nice and put up with my indecision about a dress vs. a shirt. The dresses seem made for smaller women (I'm a size 12 and the XL dress I chose was a little snug on the top but still fit). Stick with the tops if you're on the larger side and give yourself enough room for shrinking if it's cotton. I'll return to Backwoods for sure because I haven't seen any accessories places around that have such lovely things for non-crazy prices. read more

Backwoods has been a go-to of mine for years, particularly for jewelry. I've gotten some fabulous chunky silver pieces which always get compliments. It's also great for scarves. There's always a cute little pick-me-up waiting for you there for just a few dollars, whether it's sunglasses, gloves, earrings or whatever. They seem to always have something of the moment. I've been a customer when Backwoods was in a little tent in Columbus Circle before the Time Warner building was built. Then I followed them to 57th street between 8th and 9th avenues. I love their jewelry, scarves, summer clothes (dresses, tops, and skirts) and their sweaters for winter. I have been looking for the name of this place for the past year! I seriously love Backwoods. A friend told me about Backwoods about 3 years ago and I finally went with her then to see what she was raving about. I see why. First of all, when you walk in, you get an unsurpassed ambiance of care and coziness. I know it sounds silly--I mean, it is only a boutique after all, but there is something so warming about the store. The staff is amazing, friendly, and really care about you. I originally went to purchase some long skirts (something I barely find and have to order over the internet usually) but left with scarves, gloves, and some jewelry. I really love how they have such beautiful, unique pieces that you can't find in main-stream retail stores. Their prices are really unbeatable for a Manhattan boutique.
