I waited too long and had such a small window, but Shell squeezed him into her insanely busy schedule just simply out of the kindness of her heart. When I picked him up he looked incredible, easily one of the best grooms he's ever had in nine years. Then, when I went to pay, she told me she was covering the entire visit. I tried to argue, I was so determined to pay and tip her big, but she wouldn't budge. She just said, 'You have enough going on.' I completely broke down crying right there. I recently called to schedule what would have been my dog's first appointment after reading many positive reviews about this place. A gentleman answered the phone and assisted me with the scheduling process. During the call, however, I could hear a dog crying or barking loudly in the background, and the gentleman yelled at the dog "SHUT UP" while still on the phone with me. That moment didn't sit well with me. As a pet owner, it made me pause and reconsider whether this would be the right environment for my dog. A little disappointing my normal experience with them is typically great, they will try to find times to squeeze you in and their haircuts are normally top notch but just like everything else inflation inflation inflation, this morning they squeezed me in and I've been going there for over two years and they know my dogs and I've always thought they were a bit on the higher end ($$$) for what you can find for grooming, but this time was too much. I dropped them off and like normal it will be a few hours, I come back expecting to pay what I normally pay, and the guy that works there took about 10 mins to explain to me how I've been charged wrong for my dogs for the last two years because they had this lady from the Bay Area tell them that they were not charging enough even though my dogs are small (shih tzu's) they are considered designer pets according to this lady so they up-charged me even more which would have been over$250 for two small dogs and they did not tell me before they groomed my dogs plus there's another fee they charge for using their card system they have ( thankfully I will say he told me before hand so I can save a senseless fee) but they need to let all their clients know if they are going to continue to up-charge or not. Also in this last cut they butchered my dogs chest :/ they charge that much for that...There are other places that will take care of your pets for cheaper regardless if they are designer pets or not and still provide a great service. You just want to make sure before you do anything, find out how they classify your dog or pet because it seems like they are charging more for no reason read more

I walked by this place thinking I'm gonna go in here and write out in front. They have a sign that if your pet goes to the bathroom, they're gonna charge you a fee. I have never been to this place and that is literally the first communication that I get from them that they showed to everybody outside their very front door. I need to tell the manager whoever the owner is that thought that this was a good idea. Are you ready? You literally deal with dogs and quite often you have customers that don't quite train them right. This is a solid central theme to your business. The fact that you won't just get a cleanup kit and clean it up if an accident happens, says mountains to your business. It also says to your foresight in your marketing and how you treat customers. It really really is not that difficult to just have one of your employees clean it up. It takes 30 seconds. It's a very very minimal cost. It also directly improves your relations with your customers to know that you're a little bit flexible and you actually care. Instead, you're being very sterile by putting a sign out front that says this, and that you're unwilling to do it without getting paid for it. How many times does this actually happen? How many customers do you actually have a visit your shop in to pay for service and out of those hundred customers how many of their pets actually go to the bathroom inside of your place? I will bet you you're looking at maybe a maximum of 10%. I would suggest that it's probably closer to 2% if that. So, with all the marketing that you have to do in all the customer retention that you have to do you will actually spend money on a sign and have your employees put it out every day then you just have a cleanup kit and tell your customer so that's no problem accidents happen. I want you to really think about this. It turned me away because it says more than just about going to the bathroom. How much does it actually cost you to just gain one more customer? I will bet you the cost of that far outweigh is just getting a cleanup kit and having your employee employees show customer service. That's food for thought read more

My Aussiedoodle is pretty finicky and dances about the grooming table to avoid staff or the trimmers sometimes. The staff at Backyard Pet Spa handle her personality and behaviors well and patiently and have become careful with her thin, connective skin near her hips. I like to get Luna a dog cookie here as well for a treat for her finishing a bath and a haircut and their Blueberry spa treatment package. They also have a nail trim program where you can bring your pup in every two weeks for a quicker trim as the nails tend to not have grown as long a length in 2 weeks as say, 2 months, and the small follow-up fee is a good deal if you have a dog who, when in need, gets your attention by standing up and sinking their long claws (gently) into your arms! read more

My mom and I use to take our mini white Maltipoos here for years and when I got a dog of my own, this was the only place I trusted to leave my dog at. They take such good care of the dogs and always have done such a great job. Our dog got a deshed treatment as well as the Barkleys spa package and she left smelling amazing and her fur is so soft and fluffy! She got a bandana and a treat to take home as well which she loved. You need to be very specific about how long you want your appointment to be. I was not pleased with how long my large dog was with the groomer. I was told it would be 4 hours, turned out to be closer to 5-1/2 hours. When I showed up, she was still finishing up with my dog. The owner did a pretty good job with the clip, charged me to trim his toenails but said he wouldn't let her and didn't want his feet trimmed either, what dog does?? We had extra charges tacked on, but I paid anyway because I didn't know what my wife and Shell had discussed regarding the cost. Needless to say, a tip was not added on to the $139.00 fee. She failed to earn any future business of mine. That also includes referrals, she lost coming from me when people ask. Shell is very nice and I think she really wants to run a successful grooming business, but what I saw was one grooming table right out in the open, and not enough groomers to dog ratio. She has to walk away from the dog to check dogs in. Communication needs to be upfront loud and clear, and any charges agreed to ahead of time. read more

I had an exceptional experience with Shell and Tyler at Backyard Pets! I asked if they would let me watch while trimming our doodle's face, and they absolutely went above and beyond. The owners devoted an entire hour guiding me through each grooming step, including the sanitation cut, paw care, nail trimming, and more. It felt like we signed up for a 1-on-1 master class. Beyond that Shell discussed general hygiene care like how to express the anal glands, pluck the ear hair, and what type of trimmers to use. Their graciousness in allowing me to record the process and the credible expertise of both owners left us beyond grateful. Today was our first visit to Backyard Pet Spa & Boutique! I loved it! Our Aussiedoodle has a serious dislike for grooming, every aspect of it but the A-M-A-Z-I-N-G team especially Zoe, was great with our Ellie and we couldn't be more happy. The facility is clean, the boutique is adorable and they did a great job! We had some "excitement", Ellie got overly excited when I came to pick her up and decided to dart out of the front door, Zoe literally dropped everything and helped me get her. She was an absolute angel. My pup gave us a scare but overall if it weren't for the quick action we both took she could have ran into a busy intersection. I took my pure bred Siberian Husky here June 2nd, it took me awhile to write this review because I own my own business and I know what bad reviews do but every time I look at my dog for the last couple of weeks it makes me so angry how they handled the situation. In the 6.5 years of me taking her to the groomers this has NEVER happened. I have a normal groomers I go to in Folsom, but it was last minute I needed to take her somewhere and the reviews looked promising. I was very appreciative they got me in same day. When I dropped her off they were asking me what I wanted done to her, I said I just needed her undercoat blown out that's it. They asked about a trim and my immediate reaction was NO you never cut a husky's fur. Then the lady said the fur on the bottom of her paws, I agreed. The fur around her butt area so it's clean after she goes to the bathroom and I agreed. Then she said around her head and I said NO. Then she asked about the feathering on the back of her legs and I said NO. I was very clear I did not want this done, and I was so hesitant but when the girl doing the service came out I reiterated the same thing and I felt like it was okay to leave. I also felt every little thing she tried to add on more and more and it was never explained to me that these things were extra. When I picked her up it was $128 (this is the most I've ever paid, I know prices are going up everywhere and for everything so I'm thinking okay, then I tipped her on top of that before I saw my dog and that was my mistake). I would have no problem paying $128 if they did an amazing job. However that's not what happened. When I got home I cried because I realized they must have cut her after I specifically said NOT to. I called the next day and spoke to a manager, he said I could bring her in the next morning to talk to the owner and that they would watch the camera for the tool that was used so I thought "wow they're taking this seriously". When I brought her to the owner I showed her pictures of what she ALWAYS looks like after picking her up right after a grooming (see photo attached) and showed her in person what was wrong. She showed me the tool used were trimming shears which she knows herself shouldn't have been used, but the girl who did the grooming was new. She asked what I wanted and I said a full refund, she said she couldn't do that because she still got a service done: the wash, the blowout, etc. so she would only refund me the amount of the trim which was $15 and 10% off the next time. Then she says the girl is new and mistakes happen and it's not like she did it maliciously... well obviously NOT! But you aren't supposed to cut a husky's fur!!! It doesn't grow back the same, and anyone who owns a husky knows that. It will take 4-6months for it to grow back and who knows what it will look like. It's a slap in the face that she only refunded $15... what if I cut someone's hair completely off and they were so upset but because they still got it washed and toned that I only refunded the amount of their haircut?? It's not about the money, it's the principle of the matter. As a business owner, I would have handled it differently and just realized that this is a lesson to be learned for next time and I eat the cost of it because I want every person to feel that I did everything I could to help the situation. Not only that, her fur isn't even soft after I picked her up it's dry and brittle feeling. Usually she is soooo fluffy and soft (see pictures attached). I've been there 3 times. They seem to have everything you could possibly need! Friendly and helpful customer service.

It definitely has gone downhill in the last few months. My dog was left waiting for almost 5 hours and I called to find out why. I was told that he was waiting for his trim would be an additional 45 to hour min because groomer is low on staff and owner is helping. That he had been washed earlier that morning and was waiting for someone to cut him. 2 min after hanging up I received a text saying he was ready. They told my husband when he got to pick him up that he never needed a cut because he's short hair. I was told dropping him off a light trim could be done on feet and legs. So he was waiting over 3 hours for nothing ! Another time I dropped him off and 2 min later got a text that he was ready. I called and they said it was a mistake and that he was still being groomed. After 4 hrs for a non hair cut appointment I called and asked to see if he was done. They said oh he's ready. Been waiting for you to come but never got a text. Clearly disorganized. The nice guy before I haven't seen in some time and he was their main guy. I think they have lost some people and that's why so many issues. I called all day today not getting an answer to able to leave a message for a quick wash. Looking for a new place. My dog used to be done in an hour 20 min tops. 4 to 5 hours for no cut because he doesn't need them is just not OK! If they can get their time management skills back it would be great. After receiving photos of my puppy's pre-cut, I had asked if Shell would pluck her ears last minute; and Shell was exceedingly accommodating to that which I was super ecstatic about.
