Awesome food. Never a long wait to be seated. You get a lot for your money. I also like the unconventional toppings for their pizzas

From the moment you step inside, the aroma hits first: a deep, hickory-laced perfume that signals…read morehours of slow devotion rather than shortcuts. This is barbecue that announces itself honestly. No gimmicks, no pretension--just meat treated with respect. We started off with the Texas Sausage Sampler which includes 3 Sausages. Jalapeno Cheddar, Hickory Smoke and Original Old Fashioned. Served with Carolina Gold Sauce, Mustard and Horseradish. The sauce is outstanding. Smoking J's Rib House in Ashland, Kentucky, is the kind of place that reminds you why barbecue isn't just food--it's culture, patience, and pride rendered in smoke and fire. The ribs are the undisputed star. Thick-cut, generously portioned, and lacquered with a bark that balances sweetness, smoke, and spice, they arrive with that elusive perfection every pitmaster chases. The meat pulls cleanly from the bone without collapsing into mush, proof of disciplined temperature control and timing. Each bite delivers layers: smoke up front, pork richness at the core, and a restrained tang from the sauce that enhances rather than smothers. Brisket lovers will find plenty to admire. The slices boast a pronounced smoke ring and a pepper-forward crust, with fat rendered to a buttery softness that melts on the tongue. It's assertive, confident barbecue--unapologetically Southern, yet precise enough to impress even seasoned purists. The sides refuse to play second fiddle. Mac and cheese was amazing, creamy with a baked top that adds texture, while the baked beans carry a subtle smokiness that echoes the pit rather than competing with it. Coleslaw provides a crisp, cooling contrast, cutting through the richness exactly as it should. What truly elevates Smoking J's, though, is its sense of place. This isn't barbecue chasing trends or Instagram aesthetics. It's barbecue rooted in community--food that feels earned, familiar, and deeply satisfying. The atmosphere is unpretentious and welcoming, the kind where regulars are greeted like family and newcomers are quickly converted. Smoking J's Rib House doesn't just serve great barbecue--it reinforces why Ashland deserves a seat at the table in Kentucky's smokehouse conversation. It's a destination for locals, a worthy stop for travelers, and a reminder that when barbecue is done right, it doesn't need to shout. The smoke speaks for itself.

Visiting my family in Ohio, they asked to take us to this BBQ joint for some lunch. I was…read moresurprised how big this place is on the proximity of the size of the town...but it looked to be doing great business on a Thursday afternoon. They got some fried pickles for the table and shared with us...these were pretty good. Hub and I decided to split a three meat plate for 20 dollars...a bargain with all that food...it came with two sides. We picked the Mac and cheese and the baked beans. All the meats were fabulous as were the baked beans and cornbread...the only thing that fell short was the Mac and cheese...but this is just a side and not the star. When we come back I will ask to come back here..I,was pretty impressed!

Giovanni's is an eastern KY institution for pizza. I heard this place makes their own sauce or…read moresomething. Normally I would frown upon doing that in a cherished local pizza establishment like Giovanni's but this place tastes very much like the others. My 7" pizza was more of a rhombus shape. It was very good but hurriedly sliced. On Tuesday night they have very good karaoke starting at 6pm (I think). I'm Carter County's Karaoke King so I'm always fashionably late for those. On Wednesday night they have open mic hosted by awesome local talent Shelby Lore. When I requested the Ramones he obliged. That is very rare in eastern KY for musicians to do Ramones request. Not only did Shelby sing a Ramones song. He sang one of my favorite Ramones songs that is rarely performed anywhere much less Eastern KY. The song was BONZO Goes To Bitburg. I've been there 3 times. Every time Carter County's "Living Jukebox" Louie McNeal was there. I'm certain he knows every song ever created. 2 of the 3 times Shelby hosted it. They have a bar and you can generally watch the Cincinnati Reds there because it's Boyd County. For some reason the Cincinnati Reds have gotten such a huge fan base that they are not taking new fans from Carter County. You are forbidden from watching Reds games in Carter County unless you have DirecTV or Cable. Since I'm Carter County's biggest Reds fan I've tried diligently to purchase their games but I'm forbidden (!?!) from my zip code. The Reds do want Boyd county fans. Just not Carter County. I'm gonna start following minor leagues anyway. Baseball sux now because the pitchers no longer bat. DH is Mickey Mouse baseball. If baseball was serious about increasing offense they should just put the pitcher, catcher and batter on the same team. That would be way more entertaining that watching some morbidly obese washed up had-been cling to relevance as a DH (shudders like Lurch)

They told him to pull around and it would be finished soon and they would bring it out in a few. 20 minutes later he went inside and it still wasn't finished. After 5-10 more minutes they gave him the pizza and he brought it home. They didn't bother to give him the chips or pizza sauce that were supposed to be with it. And everything was cold. I'll never order from there again. You use to be our go to Giovanni's, never again.
