Beautiful home--Ugly service…read more We were so excited to stay in this historic home, based on past reviews and even added a second night to our original reservation. We checked in after dark and I wasn't given directions to our Galleries room which was in the third story of another building around the corner from the main house. Thankfully, I had seen the layout online before we arrived and we eventually found our room. Macy texted soon after, asking if we found our room and apologized for the "stray dogs in our parking lot".There were three large dogs and one stayed close by, barking as we were unloading and for quite a while afterward. We travel with two small dogs and it didn't feel safe for them or us. I called the City of Vicksburg and they stated that the Corner's owner, Macy, had told them not to pick up the stray dogs when animal control had been called out in the past. She was given a solution that would have helped keep guests comfortable and chose not to proceed. We slept in our clothes because the bed was not clean. There were also dead bugs on the floor, and the rugs had not been vacuumed. Macy asked for pictures to show her housekeeper and apologized for the "ladybugs" (cockroaches). There was a coffeemaker provided--about 2 feet from the toilet. The jetted tub was older and based on the general uncleanliness of the room, we could not bring ourselves to use it. There was no shower. Due to these experiences, we chose to leave the B & B early the next morning and not stay the second night as planned. I texted Macy so she wouldn't have to provide breakfast. The town of Vicksburg was delightful and we enjoyed breakfast and coffee from Bohemia Cafe and Bakery, walked throughout downtown, viewed the Riverfront murals, shopped at a great indoor flea market, and visited the National Military Park. We had some wonderful BBQ from Big Bees and eventually resumed our leisurely journey. Upon arriving home, we found Macy had emailed us a voucher for a free night's stay at their property. Although I appreciate the gesture and admission of fault, we do not plan to stay there again and this is of no use to us. My husband called this week to discuss and Joe (the other owner) answered. Joe swore at my husband, and said we left early because "we just had somewhere to be" and that we should call our credit card company. Wow. The grounds are gorgeous. We believe the home has been well preserved and the river view from our balcony took us back in time. The neighborhood is sketchy. We are leaving this review to inform travelers such as ourselves: who simply wish for good service, clean rooms and hosts who take ownership of any misses. This visit was a miss. All the furniture is period specific and the wall coverings and rugs reflect the same. Many of these old mansions are drafty and damp, this was is not. They have spent the extra $ to ensure you have a comfortable stay. We stayed in the Master suite and it was incredible. Plenty of room and on the first floor makes it so convenient. Macy made us a pot of tea before breakfast on Sunday. Sunday morning breakfast was a very nice meal. Quiche, ham, hash brown casserole, biscuit and fruit. We were needing to leave before breakfast on Monday. Macy got up early on Monday morning and there was a pot of tea for us! Excellent service! I would recommend this venue to everybody.

Stayed here for one evening, and I stayed at the recommendation of someone from another B&B in…read moreVicksburg that was booked. I was slightly late for arrival, but Paul and Carolyn said not to worry. Upon arriving I discovered the B&B is located a ways south of downtown, and the surrounding neighborhood seemed a bit run-down. Also, there were several dogs roaming in the street. After waiting some time for the dogs to disappear, I went into the main building to meet with Paul. Inside the main building looked in keeping with its exterior, with lots of antiquated artifacts scattered about. I forgot the B&B was basically cash-only (a bit strange given we're in 2018, but I ran with it anyways), so I ran to an ATM to withdraw cash to pay for my stay. After receiving keys I headed to the Gardenia Room. Upon entering the room, I developed this sinking feeling--something about the place just felt awful, like someone's broken dreams. Surrounding one actual painting were several small replicas of expressionist paintings in cheap plastic frames, an old tube television sat atop of a chest and below the level of the bed, to the right of the chest was a non-brand name microwave sitting on top of a refrigerator which appeared to be not working and daisy-chained to an outlet. The bed looked clean and comfortable, but draped about and around the headboard was a length of hot pink lace that did not seem to match anything else in the room. There was one small window to the left of the door, and it made me feel somewhat better to kep it open. I tried to sleep, but my cold/sinus infection was exacerbated by the heater. On the low heat setting, the heater fluctuated every few minutes between about 60 and 75 degrees. The trains didn't bother me as much as the heater. The combination of illness and fluctuating temperatures allowed me little sleep. The next morning I awoke, and found a wasp on the headboard. I then went to the bathroom to run the shower and found a dead roach in the tub. Soon after, I for some reason decided to look into the heater, and could see several dead roaches in the vents. I called Paul and told him I was going back to New Orleans because I was to ill to go to the meetings I was in Vicksburg for, and it was then that I discovered there is a no-refund policy within 7 days of a scheduled stay. It seemed like given I was sick and my lodging was for business purposes, and was not aware of the policy, that it would have been reasonable to refund me despite the policy, but that didn't happen. I really wanted to like this place, the person who recommended it said it has improved and to disregard earlier critical Tripadvisor reviews, but by all appearances it has not changed for the better.
