Cute decor. Friendly-ish staff. About 12 types of fresh bagels.to choose from. I chose garlic, he chose cinnamon. Both really tasty With equally tasty toppings. Cool seating at the counter or in a quiet nook. Mine was almost a little burnt, only reservation of a fifth star. A few more veggie toppings to chose from would really make this place stand out. Stopped in for lunch the other day, for the 3rd and most likely final time since the new owner took over. I ordered the Turkey Wrap and was so disappointed by the lack of meat and ingredients. I was shocked at the small amount of turkey that I had to ask for extra and they charged me $1.75 for another two thin slices. This use to be my favorite sandwich, they use to take a large handful of fresh tomatoes, cucumbers and sprouts and pack the wrap full of turkey and veggies, I could hardly eat the whole thing. But, now they really cut back and the sandwich was a disappointment. On a side note, why on earth did they stop serving the Veggie Cream cheese, that was the best cream cheese I've ever had! read more

Bagel was decent. Not many options for vegetarians. The employees seemed so annoyed that we were there. No smiles at all. Then as we were eating they started packing up the place. I'm a Northwestern student and this is easily my favorite place to go to study any day of the week. It's especially awesome that it's open on Sunday because a lot of Evanston coffee shops are closed on Sunday. My father has a buisness right across the street from Bagel Art and so I dropped in for the first time. The place inside doesn't look fancy and all but the food is delicious! The food is not the cheapest but it is so worth it. My sister and I loved the service and will definitly come back there again. I came by today around 3:15 (15 minutes after closing) and upon realizing they were closed got hella dramatic while goofily making eye contact with the folks inside. Really disappointing decisions made by the new management make this once unique place regrettably forgettable. The old Bagel Art reverberated with unique charm in both its menu and its staff, making it not only a source of great bagels but also a welcome part of Evanston's character. Now, the menu has been radically reduced and homogenized to the point where it is less memorable than Panera's. While the bagels themselves seem to be just as good, the portions on the bagel sandwiches are miserly. And the interior is merely a shell that used to ooze character and charm. I, like many of the other reviewers really wanted to like this place because it's local, cool, lots of organic, ect. The first time I ever went to the Bagel Art the sun was shining and the food and service was great. They would be much happier with me if I wrote my review then because it would've been a 3 or 4 star writeup. Little did I know the owner wasn't in the first time I went to the Bagel Art. When I came in for a second time and placed an order I remember the owner ruining the mood of my relaxing lunch by constantly griping at the employees while I was trying to eat. After leaving I didn't think too much of it, maybe she was having a bad day or the worker was really bad. NOPE, I just got back from going a third time and the owner was in and very irritable, and once again hearing it ruined a nice lunch break. I feel bad for the poor employees who have to get yelled at in front of customers. Dear owner, If you're going to be annoyed about a cookie being made too big or a batch of cucumbers peeled and cut to the wrong diameter then please write a memo to the staff because It doesn't do the your business any good to say "who cut these cucumbers?" in the middle of lunch hour. Now if it were only once I would let it go but its been every time i've come while the owner is working. You would think a hippy would be able to chill out. read more

While the bagels from this place are delicious, I have to agree with a previous reviewer that the managers at this store are absolute jerks. I walked in on this beautiful, sunny morning to pick up bagels for some out of town visitors. I left in a bad mood after listenening to the manager ("Eric") yell at his probably high school age female employee that "if she doesn't like being told what to do she could go home" and harrassing every single thing she did (which, in my opinion, she was doing just fine with). Not only is it mean, it's flat out unprofessional to verbally attack your employees right in front of the paying customers. Too bad, Bagel Art. I live just a block from your store and would come in every weekend for a delicious bagel. I would have even given you a 4 star rating. However, the way you treat your employees is unacceptable and I will not be returning again. read more

My overall impression of Bagel Art is a sloppily-run business. The new location is brightly painted and the seating is nice, but that's as good as it got. I ordered the veggie bagel sandwich and my wife had the beans and rice wrap. The bagel had a strong metallic burnt taste and the vegetables were flavorless. The tomato was light pink and mealy, which is inexcusable in the middle of summer. The wrap was neither good nor bad; the flavors were bland and there was no variation in texture, becoming a porridge of beans and rice. The price was about $10.50 for the two. Worst, however, was that the owner warmly greeted all of her regulars but pointedly ignored us and some other people she didn't seem to know. Service was slower than expected from other bagel places, and she forgot our drink and had to be reminded later. The wall menus were hung behind air ducts and aren't visible except from a small area of the restaurant by the door, and included a horrendous amount of misspellings. The typos were so frequent that we believe they might be a misguided attempt at "atmosphere." We won't be returning. read more

I'm really disappointed that I have to give this place 2 stars as I really expected so much from this place... Here's the reason why I had to do this: I hate onions, hate. Hate onions. When I placed my order, I requested no onions. The receipt itself said, no onions... I get back to work and there are onions in my sandwich. It's too late for me to go back and change this order as I only have a half hour break and it takes me half an hour to get to and back to work. I spent the next 15 minutes deconstructing this sandwich, picking out all the onions, and trying to wrap it as neatly as possible. Some of the onions are so tiny that i could not get all of them out. I ate half a wrap and almost gagged each time I tasted an onion. The other half of the wrap I ended up giving to my coworker. I know that I sound like a picky jerk but I just can't stand the taste of them, this is always a no-no whenever I go out. read more

I am very disappointed with Bagel Art. I have been going to Bagel Art since they opened and use to love the place. They have changed owners and hence changed some of there products. One thing that I and many other people went into bagel art for is their amazing bagels and amazing selection of cream cheese that I haven't seen at other places before. They now have moved to carrying only 3 cream cheese flavors and they are plain, scallion, and I think its called cinnamon honey. They have just lost two very loyal customers who went into bagel Art probably 2-3 times a week because of this. What they could have done is make smaller batches of the cream cheeses they don't sell a lot of or rotate them daily and have a schedule. I am one very very frustrated bagel lover. read more

I stopped in here for a sandwich and it was OK--but not great--after a couple of bites I threw it out. The bagel was kind of tasteless--I had ordered a ham and cheese on a poppy bagel. FIrst of all there were hardly any bagels to choose from at the beginning of the lunch time. I had it toasted, which should have made it taste a bit fresher, and it didn't really help. It was a poppy bagel which didn't really even have a poppy taste--not enough poppy seeds. It seems like this place skimps on ingredients compared to other places. There really is no good bagel selection to speak of. Also, the bagels they do have are slightly larger than a mini bagel at other places and don't make for great sandwich material. I also noticed below that after a number of other mediocre reviews there was a 5 star review by the guy who was running the cash register today--perhaps he is the owner of manager. That is really not what Yelp is about--he does not have the spirit of a true Yelper!!! With all of the great choices in Evanston, how does this place stay open? I think the reviews about variety, quantity, quality and taste sum it up well. read more

I used to go here regularly, despite the fact that two bagels and coffees comes to around 15 bucks, and the coffee is over-brewed and the bagels are usually a bit burnt. Sadly, they're still the best bagels in Evanston. Today I went back for the first time in a while, only to discover that they've redone their menu completely, leaving only three flavors of cream cheese (if plain even counts as a flavor), and have completely redecorated. Admittedly, the employees seem less perpetually stoned, but the paltry new menu leaves a lot to be desired. Also, the online menu still shows the previous version, which had 8 flavors of cream cheese. Lies. Guess I need to find a new breakfast spot. read more

I don't know when these guys moved into the location of the old cafe Express, but its pretty awkward in there. I have memories of the halfway house people chain smoking in the back room. Those were the days. Anyways, we went in hoping for some breakfast sandwiches and were informed that they were out of eggs and it would have more after 15 minutes. This being the modern age, we didn't have time to wait around for eggs, so I ordered the breakfast sandwich without the eggs. When he rung it up it was about a dollar more than the sandwich would have cost with eggs, which was very confusing. Then someone dropped a bagel on the floor and it was funny. Anyways he gave me a slight discount and I put it in the tip jar anyway, even though it seems weird to run out of an essential ingredient first thing in the morning when you're right across the street from the train tracks. The paint job in the place spruce it up a little bit, but like I said, I still have memories of chain smoking in the back room and drinking 50 cent refills of coffee from Dawn, the owner. read more

i usually just get bagels, not sandwiches, and the bagels are great, as is the cream cheese. i find the staff there to be generally friendly, but if there's more than a few customers it can be maddeningly slow to get a simple order. all in all, a nice neighborhood bagel place, with tasty fresh bagels. read more
