As I said in my previous review, there's not a lot of competition, but this is best yiros in Brisbane. (If you can prove me wrong, please do!!) They have actual lamb, chicken and pork, not that god awful mince stuff. We're not talking something you choke down when too drunk to make better decisions, this is worth travelling for. The chips are perfect. They scoop tzatziki with a spoon, not squirt it out of a bottle (get some on the side for your chips!) I'm almost salivating thinking about the lamb and am considering stoppin in on my way to a BBQ because... I don't need a reason.

I popped in recently in search of some quirky ingredients for a recipe I've wanted to try and walked out with way more than what I needed. They stock beautiful oils, pastas, meats, cheeses, pate, caviar and foreign food items that you could never find in a regular grocery store. I also have friends who have taken classes in their cooking school and have raved about it! They hold specialty classes with industry professionals in things like chocolate making, cheese making and baking as well as cuisine specific classes in making the most out of your BBQ and cooking Thai cuisine at home. I'm surprised that more people don't know about Black Pearl, especially considering Brisbane has an up and coming food culture. If I want quality cuts of meat, Billy's is where I make a beeline for. Last week was no exception when I wanted to buy a few of the Italian Sausages that I'd discovered were what Merriweather Cafe use in their breakfast baguette. Unfortunately, they were sold out when I arrived but that didn't stop me leaving with bacon, Canadian Maple pork sausages and a leg of pork to slow roast. There's plenty of condiments to consider as well and you'll rarely leave empty handed. The lads behind the counter are friendly, helpful and, using a fan dangled pulley-system contraption, will even open the door for you as you leave. And yes, it is slightly more pricey than what you might buy in the supermarket but I feel it is worth it for the higher quality of produce. It isn't often I crave meats of any kind but if I do, I want it to be good.

They know where the meat came from (which is important to environmentalists and animal lovers like me) and they can take you through the different cuts and best cooking methods for each. Like all awesome butchers they also have dog bones for sale, and are not above slipping a little extra in the package for a particularly personable puppy. You will pay a little more than at the supermarket, but the taste difference is astronomical and well worth the expense.

At a quick glance driving by, it looks like they could do a range of things like plants, hardware, some sort of old fashioned wares. But no, I eventually made the effort to stop by and they actually sell New Zealand themed foods and produce. The store is lovely, really different exterior. It looks a bit like something from the outback. To give you an idea, they sell a range of biscuits, drinks, jams, sauces plus some All Blacks merchandise and New Zealand brand grocery items.

It's not a huge place but is packed mostly with tins of all sorts of things you won't see in Coles. I bought some Natural Yoghurt Drink to try, a huge bag of round Afghani flat bread, some mango pickles and a jar of hot chilli peppers. Love the bread. For only $3-something you get 3 big rounds. I think it would be great eaten warm and brushed with olive oil, garlic and lemon juice or eaten with winter meals like stew and soup. As for the yoghurt drink, it's interesting... First of all, the bottle should come with a slightly more explicit warning than "Shake gently before opening". Not knowing it was carbonated, I shook vigorously before opening it in my boyfriend's Alpha Romeo. Yoghurt is not a good scent to have in one's car. Once you get over the strangeness of carbonated yoghurt, this drink is actually quite good. There are other things I'd like to try in this store also, but I will definitely keep coming back for the bread and yoghurt drink.

It has a bit of a warehouse feel, and some clearance sales lying around, but also a fairly respectable selection, including things that aren't all that easy to find; some nice vegetarian specialty items and a decent international section. They have ample fresh fruits and vegetables and a lot of dried beans and grains, so we're not talking unhealthy food either. The location is reasonably convenient, near the hospital with ample bus access and a train station on the other side of the hospital. Some of the sale items will understandably be a tad sketch, buy you can certainly find some deals here.

I've gotta say, I was pretty impressed with the range and presentation of fruit and veg. Tucked just inside a Spar-owned shopping centre, Mother of All Fruits occupies a huge floor space. Most of this is taken up by rows of fresh produce, but there's also a section for packaged and frozen goods. The range of fruit and veg is great and their herbs come in huge bunches for around $2.95 each. There are also lots of "bucket" specials to be had where you get a reduced price for buying a large amount. For $30, I filled a green bag and walked out with a tray of 20 bowen mangoes. Pretty good value, especially the $10 tray of mangoes. Whilst extremely well organised and well presented, the only thing I don't like about this produce store is that it feels a little too much like a supermarket. I remain faithful to the Gabba Fruit Market, which has a more local feel to it and has a less hectic carpark.
