Even the reliable chain Spoons deli cafe closed down at Garden City after about a year. There just didn't seem to be the right market for a gourmet deli in outer southern suburbia. Plenty Continental Deli has proven everyone wrong. I've been going to this deli now for the past two years, admittedly at first in an effort to help a new foodie business, but as their business grew it genuinely became an excellent purveyor of delicious foods. The business owners are both knowledgeable and adventurous with their stock and carry a huge range of olives, cheeses, salamis and ice creams. They're not scared to experiment either. Last year, they started selling gelati in cups but replaced it a few months later with a bakery section. These days, they've extended their bakery section to include Roman baked goods out the front of their shop on weekends. This is also a great place to go if you want to put together a food hamper for a gift. There are some excellent Turkish delights, chocolates, mixed nuts, oils and dressings. Service can be a little slow at times, especially if you get stuck behind a customer wanting different types of meats and antipasto. It's great if you're happy to browse but it can get frustrating if you're in a rush.

Many times I've just gone to Plenty for inspiration and ideas on what to make for dinner. It's hard to walk out of there with only one thing though. Best deli in Brisbane by far and I feel so lucky that it's part of my local shops!

In hindsight I suspect artichoke is only available during certain seasons but it took awhile before I was willing to forgive them. On the occasions I do venture here, I find their range still a bit limited though they do have some cheap bargains out the front- today, they were selling bags of avocados for $3. Their other redeeming feature is that they have a small deli section out the back. This place isn't enough to draw me to the Ville Shopping Village on a regular basis for fresh fruit and deli treats but if I happen to be in the area, I would drop in for the sake of convenience and the occasional bargain.

Don't be fooled by the name Fresh Fruit and Deli, this is just a fruit and vegetable shop with a fridge down the back that holds olives, cheese and a few assorted dips and meats. The quality of their produce has always been high, a good sign for an independent shop. I guess this means they have a large customer base and are able to rotate through their stock quickly, meaning the fresh food is always fresh. As with most fruit and veg shops the prices are a tad higher than you will find at a Coles or Woolworths, but it's worth visiting if you're one of those people like me that enjoys giving the smaller business a helping hand.

It's based in a small, suburban shopping centre in the Coorparoo/Camp Hill area.Inside there's a deli counter and little mini grocery store (stocking high end oils, vinegars etc etc). And a huge trestle table where you can sit and sip coffee or brunch. If you're after more space, just outside you can sit in the cafe's "extension", which is quite spacious, airy and has huge French windows that open out. Unfortunately onto a carpark. I came here to order some gourmet salads for Christmas Day. And although they sounded amazing, creative and probably would have tasted divine - at $23.50/kilo, I had to fan myself with the menu and have a sit down. Before leaving without ordering. I have it on good authority that this is THE place that locals come for brunch on a weekend (but book a table). And the sarnies are apparently to-die-for. As is the expense, I'm sure.

The atmosphere is nice and relaxed and the space makes it an easy option if you're looking to meet up with family or friends. While not extensive the menu is sure to feature at least something that will interest you. My personal pick being the BLAT with its thick bacon, generous smear of avocado and mayo it is a real treat. Their coffee is Merlo and is good without being anything to write home about. All things considered, a Sunday morning coffee and BLAT in their very open and breezy outside seating area is a great way to start winding down the weekend.

I recently stopped in for a Sunday breakfast and my eating partner politely inquired whether we should sit at a table or order at the counter. Her reply "Sit down and then order at the counter" left us feeling a bit non-plussed. That moment of miscommunication aside, we soon secured a menu and perused their interesting selection of breakfast creations. I was tossing up between the 'Italian sausages w/ baby spinach, poached eggs & polenta roll' and the 'Balsamic mushroom bruschetta w/ grilled halloumi + lemon' when I noticed their list of weekend specials. In the end the 'scrambled eggs with smoked salmon, baby spinach and red pepper relish on Turkish toast' won the day. My 'plus one' had the 'Potato cakes + smoked salmon w/ rocket + mountain pepper dressing'. We both treated ourselves to one of their Lavazza lattes as well. The coffee came out very quickly and was innoffensive. The food was pretty rapidly dished out after that. 'Plus one's' meal looked a little on the small side but the potato cakes were deceptively filling, she said. The 'mountain pepper dressing' was apparently like Hollandaise with a little extra kick of some something. My scrambled eggs were moderately portioned with pleasantly browned hunks of smoked salmon and baby spinach interspersed throughout. The red pepper relish was a nice accompaniment, but perhaps could have used a bit more spice. That, or the offer of fresh cracked pepper, would have made a welcome addition. The service was adequate; pretty invisible really (sometimes a good thing). But at your suburban deli kind of joint a bit of personality would be nice.
