2022-07-21. It's…read moreSunday afternoon in the quaint town of Albion, MI, and there are only 2 places open in the downtown area on S. Superior Street; Stirling Books and Brew, and Albion Malleable Brewing Co. After stopping by the Stirling Books for a coffee and milkshake, we decided to head to the place we knew would be open, the Public Park! A quick search on the internet led me to Victory Park. I'm not sure why this place is not on Yelp's map, but I added it, hence this review. Victory Park is Albion's largest riverfront park. The property could use some beautification, but it's still in good working order for the most part. The park includes a large pavilion that sits next to the 10,000 sq. ft. wooden playground structure (similar to Fort Fraser). There are vast open picnic spaces with BBQ's for public use. From the playground, I was able to see tennis courts, a baseball diamond, and a band shell that doubles up as a sheltered skating rink in the winter. The Kalamazoo River East Branch is the riverfront for this park, and there are walking paths and trails that are part of the North Country National Scenic Trail. This 4,600 mile long trail includes a variety of hikes, from easy walks to challenging treks. This trail links scenic, natural, historic, and cultural areas over seven states including North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, New York, and Vermont. The trail includes a variety of diverse features, from clear-flowing streams to vast prairies, to sandy beaches. Both a hidden gem and a diamond in the rough, it's worth checking out if you have little ones and are in the area. Merrifield Park is a unique park in the area. The rest (north side) of the park has several shelters, a large elevated playground with towers and slides, and a public access ramp to the river. The grounds were in great condition other than it could use a bit of watering on some of the lawn areas. Lots of parking and open space for running around or organized games that need space. I also noticed a lot of trees that had been carved into wooden sculptures left in place around the shelters. All have been coated with a rust colored treatment to preserve the images. Most feature some type of animal though one has a female image with the word Princess carved at the base. It's a nice park if you have a specific interest in swimming or skating, or just strolling along the river. Review #3101
